Sleeping fewer than seven hours per night is strongly linked to reduced long-term well-being, even when factors like diet, exercise, income, and access to health care are taken into account Large-scale U.S. data shows sleep loss predicts reduced overall well-being more reliably than many habits people focus on daily, including physical inactivity and poor dietary choices Chronic short sleep keeps your body's natural maintenance systems under greater demand, preventing the nightly repair work your body relies on to stay resilient over time Sleep pressure builds when your cells work harder to produce energy, leading to natural signals that guide your brain toward deeper rest and stronger sleep drive Improving sleep is one of the most practical and controllable ways to support long-term health, because nightly sleep habits respond directly to changes in light exposure, environment, and daily timing

What if preparing for pregnancy started months before you ever saw a positive test? In this episode of Hormone Genius, Theresa and Jamie dive into the often-overlooked world of preconception health and why preparing your body for pregnancy shouldn't begin after conception—it should begin before. We start with the “fifth vital sign”: your menstrual cycle. Your period, cervical mucus, ovulation, and luteal phase can provide valuable clues about your reproductive health. Learn the three simple things to start watching in your cycle and why understanding your body's natural fertility signs can be such a powerful first step. Then we move beyond the cycle and talk about building a healthy foundation for both women and men, including: • Why giving yourself at least three months to prepare can be valuable • The role of whole foods and the Mediterranean-style approach to nutrition • Key nutrients to consider, including folate, iron, iodine, vitamin D, choline, omega-3s, selenium, and zinc • Why thyroid, metabolic health, hormones, and nutrient status deserve attention • Egg and sperm health—and why the months before conception matter • The potential roles of CoQ10, DHEA, and other targeted approaches for certain individuals • Why your partner's health matters just as much as yours • Sleep, exercise, stress, and environmental exposures • Simple ways to reduce unnecessary exposure to plastics, fragrances, and other household chemicals • Why dental and medication reviews belong on your preconception checklist • What to consider if you've recently stopped hormonal birth control Most importantly, we talk about hope without blame. If you've struggled to conceive, “just relax” isn't helpful—and fertility challenges deserve compassion, understanding, and appropriate care. In this episode of Health Matters, host Courtney Allison speaks with Dr. Morgan Busko, a sports medicine physician at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia and a competitive triathlete, about the physical and mental rewards of running. You can switch between apps while studying or working without pausing the ambient sound.About our sounds:Water creates a natural white noise. Infused with the relaxing quality of nature and the sound-masking properties of white noise, listening to running water is an ideal way to turn off all the stressful things life brings, and to de-stress. Some of our most popular sounds include a river, flowing creek, babbling brook, gentle waves on a lake, and a bamboo fountain. Rain also creates a natural white noise. Infused with the relaxing quality of nature and the sound-masking properties of white noise, listening to rain is an ideal way to switch off all the stressful things life brings and to de-stress. Some of our most popular sounds are rain on an umbrella, hailstorms, hard rain, soft rain, gentle rain, wind and rain, rain on a car.White noise helps babies and children to get a better and deeper night's sleep. This is because external sounds are masked by the noise. With white noise in the background, your child will not hear annoying cars driving by or dogs barking in bed. This allows your little one to sleep better. And it also saves you as a parent a lot of hours!Pink noise is more common in nature than you might expect. It can be compared to continuous rainfall or wind. In addition to white noise, pink noise is also increasing in popularity, especially in business environments. Because it can increase productivity, concentration and creativity.Brown noise can be compared to waves of the sea, a river current, strong winds or the sound of thunder during a storm. Like pink noise, brown noise is very similar to white noise. However, the frequencies have been lowered even further and a lot more concentrated. This gives it a rougher/coarse tone than pink noise. It sounds a bit deeper and a bit bass-like. The benefits of brown noise are the same as the other types of noise. It provides relaxation, increased focus and improved deep sleep.DISCLAIMER: Be aware that loud noises can damage your hearing. If you can't carry on a conversation without raising your voice while playing one of our spheres, the sound may be too loud for your ears. Do not place the speakers directly next to a baby's ears. If you have trouble hearing or ringing in your ears, stop listening to the white noise immediately and see an audiologist or your doctor. The sounds provided by ASMR Sleep Recordings are for entertainment purposes only and are not a treatment for sleep disorders or tinnitus. Consult your doctor if you regularly have severe sleeping problems, experience fitful/restless sleep or feel tired during the day.ASMR Sleep Recordings is the white noise and nature sounds podcast to help you sleep, study or soothe a baby. ASMR Sleep Recordings has uploaded more than 400+ episodes in the 4 years that the podcast has been online. You can listen to all episodes of the podcast on your favorite podcast platform. You consciously know what you should do, but your body keeps stopping you. Why? What if your anxiety, procrastination, self-sabotage, and limiting beliefs aren't signs that something is wrong with you—but signals that your nervous system doesn't feel safe? Jessica Ortner, co-founder of The Tapping Solution and co-author of Rewired, is here to explore the science and practice of EFT tapping and how regulating the nervous system may help change the way we respond to stress. Jessica breaks down why we can't always think our way out of anxiety, how tapping combines psychological principles with stimulation of acupressure points, and research examining its effects on cortisol, PTSD, food cravings, and emotional distress. We also explore why self-sabotage may actually be "misguided self-love," the difference between resilience and simply forcing yourself through discomfort, why self-criticism eventually stops working, how parents can help children regulate big emotions, and why our modern information environment may keep our bodies chronically overstimulated. Most importantly, Jessica explains how creating a sense of safety in the body can give us the freedom to make better decisions, face fear, and keep moving forward. Leveling Up: Creating Everything From Nothing with Natalie Jill
Do you crave chocolate almost every single day? There's a real reason for that, and it might be the same reason your magnesium isn't actually working. If we are in midlife and we have ever been told to 'just add magnesium,' this episode is for us. Because here is what almost nobody explains. There is not just one magnesium. There are seven different forms. And every form does a completely different job in our body. Most of us are taking one form. Usually the cheapest one. Usually the one that does almost nothing for the symptoms we are actually trying to fix. Then we wonder why magnesium 'is not working.' Wade Lightheart is back on the show. He is the co-founder of BiOptimizers (the company behind Masszymes), a three-time Canadian national natural bodybuilding champion, and one of the world's leading authorities on natural nutrition and supplementation. Today we walk through every single form of magnesium, what each one does in a midlife woman's body, and why one capsule with all seven became the missing piece in my own routine. This is the foundation underneath every other midlife thing we are already doing. The HRT. The protein. The lifting. The sleep work. None of it lands the way it should without this mineral in place. WE GO DEEP ON: • Why 'just add magnesium' is incomplete advice • Why midlife women are running on a magnesium deficit and do not know it • The 7 forms of magnesium and what each one actually does • Sleep, cramps, anxiety, mood, bones, energy, recovery: which form does what • Why magnesium taurate is one of the most under-discussed forms for women's hearts • How estrogen, cortisol, and stomach acid affect our magnesium in midlife • Why one capsule with all 7 forms (Magnesium Breakthrough) became my switch • What women feel in the first night, the first week, the first three months TIMESTAMPS • 00:00 | Why everyone is saying just add magnesium (and what nobody is explaining) • 08:00 | The 7 forms one by one (sleep, heart, muscle, energy, absorption) • 28:00 | Why one form is not enough. The Magnesium Breakthrough reveal. • 38:00 | Who this is for and how to take it • 48:00 | One thing to do this week. Close. The String Quartet by Virginia Woolf — A Calming Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime Drift off tonight to a dreamlike bedtime story for sleep and insomnia, read slowly and gently to help you fall asleep naturally. Tonight on Books at Bedtime, Martin reads Virginia Woolf's "The String Quartet" — a short, hypnotic piece from her 1921 collection Monday or Tuesday. It begins in a crowded London drawing room, full of overheard fragments — the weather, the traffic, a rent too high, a glove left on the train. The small anxious chatter of a mind that cannot settle. Then four musicians take their seats, the first violin counts one, two, three, and everything changes. The music carries the listener somewhere else entirely. A pear tree on a mountain. Fountains and falling drops. The waters of the Rhône running swift and deep over silver fish and yellow pebbles. Lovers on the grass, silver horns at dawn, a rose leaf falling from an enormous height like a little parachute. It is one of the loveliest things Woolf ever wrote about how it feels when sound takes over from thought — when the fretting mind finally lets go and simply floats. Which makes it, we think, close to perfect for the last thing you hear tonight. There is no need to follow the story. There is no plot to lose. Let the words move over you like the music moves over the people in that room, and let yourself drift. Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) remains one of the most quietly beautiful voices in English literature, and this piece is in the public domain. She points out that most people need seven to eight hours, that no one can train themselves to need less, and that chronic sleep debt shows up at work as poorer decisions, weaker memory, and more mistakes. Her recommendation for anyone serious about performance is to treat good sleep habits as the first step rather than the last. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://drjennybrockis.com/2017/2/20/our-biggest-performance-killer-is-hidden-in-plain-sight/ Quotes to ponder: "We are human, not machines." "You cannot train yourself to do with less sleep." "Sleep is a physiological and psychological necessity." If bedtime in your house feels like a nightly negotiation, or you're the one lying in the dark at 2 a.m. wondering why nothing seems to work, this conversation is for you. Pediatric sleep consultant Allison Ezell spent years stuck between a sleep doctor telling her to sleep train and a TBRI therapist affirming the trauma-informed parenting she knew her son needed, unable to find anyone who could bridge the two. She eventually became the person she needed, and she's bringing that hard-won wisdom to us today. What We Cover in This Episode The two building blocks of sleep science, sleep associations and sleep pressure, and why understanding sleep associations alone resolves most of the sleep struggles Allison sees. The difference between "putting a child to sleep" and "putting a child to bed," and why that distinction matters most for kids who wake in the middle of the night. A practical bedtime routine built around what a body actually needs to fall asleep: sensory input earlier in the evening, a warm bath or shower, real connection, and a small snack. How to build felt safety around bedtime fears through repeated, low-pressure exposure, and a gradual pullback method for weaning off sleep associations without a jarring overnight switch. A consistent, scripted response for middle-of-the-night wake-ups, plus the red flags (frequent waking, restless legs, long sleep onset, excessive daytime sleepiness) that mean it's time to talk to a doctor. You finally crawl into bed after a long day, grab your phone, and start scrolling. It feels like downtime. But is your body actually experiencing it as recovery? In this episode of the Thyroid Answers Podcast, Dr. Eric Balcavage explores how your digital habits, especially in the evening, can influence sleep, nervous system activation, recovery, and thyroid physiology. Your phone isn't just a device. Every email, notification, news story, social media post, health video, and late-night Google search is an input your brain and nervous system have to process. And timing matters. At night, your body should be transitioning away from output and toward rest and repair. But answering work emails, researching symptoms, scrolling social media, consuming upsetting news, or falling down a YouTube rabbit hole can send a very different signal: stay alert, keep processing, keep reacting. In this episode, you'll learn: Why your phone acts as a nervous system input, not just a source of entertainment How evening screen time and digital stimulation can interfere with the transition into sleep Why poor sleep can become a driver of reduced physiological capacity, not just a symptom The connection between sleep disruption, recovery, and thyroid physiology Why blue light is only one part of the screen-time conversation How emotional stimulation, comparison, health anxiety, work stress, and information overload can keep the nervous system activated Why late-night scrolling can feel like rest or control without actually helping your body recover How bedtime procrastination can contribute to a cycle of poor sleep and lower capacity Why you don't need a complete digital detox to improve your evening rhythm Simple ways to create a "digital downshift" before bed How to audit the signals you're sending your body during the last hour of your day The goal isn't to throw away your phone or create a perfect nighttime routine. It's to recognize that your evening rhythm is either helping your body pay back capacity or borrowing from tomorrow. If scrolling keeps you awake longer, leaves you anxious or wired, encourages comparison, increases cravings, or makes the next morning harder, it may not be the recovery tool you think it is. Instead of trying to overhaul everything, start with one boundary. No phone in bed. No work email after a certain time. No health research at night. Charge your phone outside the bedroom. Replace scrolling with reading. Set a wind-down alarm. The specific strategy matters less than the signal you're trying to create: The day is done. The body can recover. Thyroid recovery doesn't require perfection. It requires sending the body better signals more consistently. A closed bedroom door might not seem like a sleep issue, but it could save your child's life. In this episode, Allison shares an important fire safety message that every parent should hear: close your bedroom door before you go to sleep, and close your children's bedroom doors, too. After seeing a Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) video demonstrating what happens to two bedrooms during the same house fire, one with the door open and one with the door closed, Allison was stunned by the difference. The bedroom with the open door reached temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, while the bedroom with the closed door stayed under 100 degrees. In this episode, Allison explains: Why a closed bedroom door can dramatically slow the spread of heat, flames, and toxic smoke Why the amount of time families have to escape a house fire has decreased from roughly 17 minutes decades ago to just about 3 minutes today Why so many home fire deaths happen while people are sleeping How a closed bedroom door can buy firefighters valuable time to reach sleeping children Why parents may want to keep a baby monitor even after transitioning to a closed bedroom door How to introduce a closed-door bedtime routine without creating unnecessary anxiety about house fires for young children How older children can learn about closed doors as part of their family's overall fire escape plan Important reminders for checking and maintaining your home's smoke alarms Allison also shares why her own family changed their nighttime routine after she learned about this research, and why she now sleeps with her bedroom door closed. This is a simple change that takes just seconds but could make an enormous difference in a fire emergency. If you've ever wondered whether your daily habits are quietly protecting your brain, or quietly working against it, this one's for you. Some of the most powerful things you can do for your memory, your focus, and your long-term brain health aren't found in a prescription. They're in your morning coffee, your nightly sleep, and the way you help your body recover every single day.I'm joined by returning guest expert Dr. David Perlmutter, a board-certified neurologist and 6-time New York Times bestselling author, to unpack the real science on the choices that shape cognitive function, metabolism, and longevity. We get into why coffee is so much more than caffeine, how deep sleep literally washes waste out of your brain overnight, why tracking your sleep might be one of the smartest health moves you make, and what the research actually says about infrared saunas, cold plunges, and heart rate variability. It's practical, it's evidence-based, and you can start using it today. What You'll Learn:• Why coffee is far more than caffeine, and the 90-plus bioactive compounds that may help protect your brain• The daily coffee sweet spot, and the "caffeine curfew" that guards your deep sleep• How to choose cleaner coffee: organic, mold-free, water-processed decaf, and why flavored blends are a gamble• Quality over quantity: why "I slept 8 hours" tells you almost nothing about your brain• How deep sleep activates the glymphatic system to wash away waste tied to cognitive decline, and the minimum you should aim for• The everyday habits that quietly sabotage restorative sleep, and why a wearable can help you fix them• What HRV really measures, why higher means more resilient, and simple ways to raise yours• Hot & Cold therapy: What the science says about infrared saunas and cold plunges, and why heat and cold may share the same protective pathways• A crucial caution for breast cancer survivors and anyone at risk for lymphedema before starting heat or cold therapy• The Mouthwash Habit Your Didn't Realize Is Harming You: The surprising connection between your mouth bacteria, mouthwash, blood pressure, and blood sugar• Brain-Boosting Movement: Why exercise acts like medicine, turning your muscles into hormone-producing organs that support your brain...and so much more!About Our Guest Expert:Dr. David Perlmutter is a board-certified neurologist, Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, and 6-time New York Times bestselling author. Recognized as one of the world's leading voices in brain health, he has spent decades translating cutting-edge neuroscience into practical strategies that help people reduce their risk of neurodegenerative disease and support lifelong wellness. Chronic inflammation may be one of the biggest forces accelerating how we age—and the surprising part is that many of the things keeping it switched on are happening every day. Poor sleep, chronic stress, blood sugar spikes, visceral fat, and ultra-processed food can keep your immune system acting like it's under constant threat, potentially contributing to everything from metabolic dysfunction and heart disease to arthritis and cognitive decline. Here's what I unpack in today's episode: The hidden “inflammation switch” scientists are studying and why it may help explain how chronic inflammation drives aging and disease The everyday habits that can keep your immune system stuck in a constant state of alarm The surprising connection between mitochondrial health, visceral fat, blood sugar, and inflammation The most effective ways to help calm chronic inflammation and the simple daily shifts that may have the biggest impact Inflammation isn't the enemy—it's one of your body's most important survival tools. The problem is when the alarm never switches off. By changing the signals you send your immune system every day, you can help restore balance and support healthier aging from the inside out.
