A Fruitless Faith | Matthew 21:18–22 | The Gospel According to MatthewWhat does a withered fig tree have to do with your faith? More than you might think. In this passage, Jesus curses a fig tree that bears leaves but no fruit — and it withers from the roots. It's a striking, even jarring act. But it isn't arbitrary. It's a living parable aimed at the heart of Israel's religion, and at the heart of ours.In this sermon, Pastor Todd Fletcher examines what fruitless faith looks like, why it is so dangerous, and what the disciples' astonishment — and Jesus' words about prayer and mountains — reveal about genuine, living trust in Christ the King.In this message:What the fig tree reveals about empty religionThe connection between this miracle and the Temple cleansingWhat Jesus means when he speaks of moving mountainsThe relationship between faith and fruit in the life of the believer

The internet didn’t invent sin, but it did put it in your pocket. Porn and online gambling exploded together. Same covetousness. Same liturgy. Gambling is gay economics. Fruitless risk without work. Legalized covetousness and theft, packaged as entertainment. The house always wins. The system is hard‑wired to strip wealth from fools. Our fathers banned gaming houses, disciplined gamblers, and called it theft in public. We legalized it. Lotteries as “voluntary taxation.” Casinos as “jobs.” Sports betting in every game break. Bankruptcies. Broken marriages. Domestic violence. Addiction. Suicide. A slot machine in every pocket. A nation catechized into random luck instead of providence. Chance instead of covenant. Gambling is economic sodomy. It does not build homes. It does not strengthen families. It does not bless nations. It trains men to seek gain without work. Now the question is: How does a nation crawl out of such a deep pit?

Many years ago I was with my dad at the home of family friends. At one point, he reached out for an apple that was in a fruit bowl as the centerpiece for the table where we were sitting. Our friends gasped in horror as he quickly put it to his mouth and bit down hard…only to find it was plastic. I have to give it to the old man, his teeth were in great shape because he bit right through the plastic shell. We all had a good laugh (at least I did), but my dad didn't seem to find it as humorous as the rest of us. I suppose it's pretty disappointing to find an imitation meant only for display when you have your heart set on a tasty apple. This Sunday we'll be returning to our study in the book of Matthew, reading chapter 21:18-32, and we'll be considering that theme of religion for display purposes only.In v18-22, we see Jesus do the only destructive miracle in the entirety of the gospels. Do you think this fruitless tree was just something that irritated Jesus and he lashed out…or do you think there was something else being communicated in this? If this were a living parable being acted out for his disciples – what do you think the message is, given Jesus' actions in the last section, where he condemned the temple? The following account actually gives examples of what the message of the fig tree was. Jesus has yet another conflict with religious leaders – albeit, the chief priest is now involved. This is a first in an escalating opposition to Jesus. The question of authority is posed – “who do you think you are Jesus, emptying out the temple like that?”. There is no answer Jesus can give that won't put him in immediate danger. Jesus pulls a Bugs Bunny (“Duck season, Wabbit season…”) by posing a question that is impossible for them to answer. Who were the religious leaders afraid of when it came to answering the question? What does that tell us about the motive for their spirituality? The parable of the two sons spells it out in a pretty straightforward way. If you were to sum up the lesson of the parable, how would you word it?Looking forward to examining this passage together! Hope to see you Sunday!Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.

https://wels2.blob.core.windows.net/daily-devotions/20260315dev.mp3 Listen to Devotion You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. Ephesians 5:8-11 Light in the Lord If you get up early to go outside and wait for the sunrise, you know what it’s like to sit in darkness. Until the light comes, you can’t see anything because the darkness hides things, obscures things, and makes things impossible to see. But then, just as you think the darkness couldn’t get any deeper, you finally see it. The horizon begins to brighten in the east, and dawn begins to break. The sun begins its ascent into the sky, and its light is now cast all around you. It’s a total transformation! Everything you couldn’t see before is now visible. In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Just as the sun breaks the darkness of the earth when it rises in the east each morning, Jesus has also broken the spiritual darkness that once covered our world and our lives. Oh, what an impact this has on every single day of your life! In the darkness, you can’t see. But in the light, you can! In the darkness, you can’t function. But in the light, you can! Now, you can live as a child of the light. It’s a total transformation! “Fruitless deeds of darkness” aren’t a part of who you are anymore because “You are light in the Lord.” Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Light of the world, and you have made me light by bringing me into the light of your forgiveness, mercy, and love. Bless and keep me always as you give me the strength to now live like who I am by faith in you, my Savior. Amen. Daily Devotions is brought to you by WELS. This week on Consider This, Justin Ebert sits down with Morgan Weece and Ryan Vincent to explore Deuteronomy 18–34 and Mark 11–12. From the promise of a prophet like Moses to Moses' final blessing and death, they unpack the closing chapters of Deuteronomy and their significance. In Mark, they will break down questions that arise from Jesus flipping tables in the temple, the cursing of the fig tree, and sacrificial living. In Mark 11:12–25, Jesus curses a fig tree, drives from the temple and speaks words of warning rather than comfort. These signs expose a serious danger: a faith that looks alive on the outside but bears no fruit. As Jesus confronts fruitless religion and corrupted worship, He calls His people to be rooted in Him, not in religious activity or appearances, and be marked by faith, prayer and forgiveness.
Fruit or Fruitless
Today's episode is a punch in the gut to passive Christianity. Paul M. Neuberger calls out one of the Church's most dangerous phrases—“God wins in the end”—and exposes it for what it's become: a spiritual snooze button. We're not called to be spectators. We're called to be warriors. Comfortable faith? Dead faith. Silent faith? Fruitless faith. The cost of inaction? Souls lost. Churches weakened. Families drifting. Christ isn't looking for secret admirers. He's raising up obedient soldiers.Jesus is still Lord. His victory is certain. But what will YOU do before the clock runs out? When your moment of truth arrives, will you speak up or clock out?Buckle up. This one's raw, real, and rooted in Scripture. "In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." –James 2:17 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?" –Matthew 25:26. "But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk." –Luke 12:45Episode Highlights:01:14 – And somewhere along the way, ‘God wins in the end' stopped being fuel for obedience and became permission for apathy. It becomes the sentence that Christians use to emotionally disengage when culture collapses, when sin spreads, and when obedience feels uncomfortable. Instead of urgency, it produces indifference. Instead of courage, it creates silence. Instead of action, it justifies delay. And let me be clear, that's not faith. That's spiritual laziness disguised as theology. And boy howdy, does Satan ever love it.17:07 – When Christians choose to do nothing, the consequences aren't hypothetical. They're immediate, measurable, and devastating. Inaction doesn't preserve the status quo, it accelerates decay. When believers stay quiet, sin doesn't pause, it advances. Scripture never treats passivity as harmless. In fact, it treats it as dangerous disobedience. God doesn't judge his people only for what they do wrong, but also for what they refuse to do right. One of the most sobering examples comes from Jesus himself.29:40 – It's a command. Jesus didn't gather his disciples after the resurrection to offer encouragement. He issued marching orders. Matthew, chapter 28, verses 19 through 20, records it clearly when it says this, ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.' There is no fine print. There is no exemption clause. There is no version that says unless it makes you uncomfortable.Connect with Paul M. NeubergerWebsite

In this episode of Unwritten, Trevor Barreca sits down with Melissa Sartori, who shares a quiet but powerful story of how God works long before we ever see the fruit. While serving on a small Catholic campus in the Northeast, he was tasked with reaching student athletes — a group that made up nearly a quarter of the entire student body. Many were open, curious, and eager. But one athlete, Caitlyn, always stayed just out of reach: friendly, kind, smiling… yet never willing to go deeper.Despite little visible progress, she never left his prayers. And then, on a cold November night — with plans canceled and Thanksgiving break hours away — everything changed. In This Episode You'll Hear:
It is a tradition now to kick off the new year with a low effort episode so that I can recover from the holidays. So this year, Chris Barker and Jake the Lawyer join Josiah to hang out and talk about craft beer and coffee, the "seizing"/"capture"/"kidnapping"/"abduction" of Maduro, declining literacy, and some sports.Become a Fruitless Patron here: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=11922141Check out Fruitless on YouTubeFind more of Josiah's work: https://linktr.ee/josiahwsuttonFollow Josiah on Twitter @josiahwsuttonReference"Venezuelan Exiles Root for U.S. Military Action. After a year long hiatus, the Fruitless Bookclub is back. This is the seventh installment of that show-within-a-show, featuring Chris Barker and Jake the Lawyer, where we read all those nonfiction books we've been meaning to read. Today's episode is about The Invention of Decolonization: The Algerian War and the Remaking of France by Todd Shepard, a dense, academic look at the confusing constitutional crisis France experienced in the wake of Algerian independence. Join us as we discuss France's strange attempt to deny that Algeria was a colony, the racial implications of that denial, and how Charles de Gaulle used the crisis for his own political aims.Become a Fruitless Patron here: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=11922141Check out Fruitless on YouTubeFind more of Josiah's work: https://linktr.ee/josiahwsuttonFollow Josiah on Twitter @josiahwsuttonMusic & Audio creditsYesterday – bloom.Mao Boy - Indochine ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

There seems to be a growing normalization of things like New Age spirituality, charms and crystals, Tarot card readings, psychics, neo-paganism, and witchcraft. As more young people identify as “nones,” it invites the opportunity for them to seek after such things. Yet the Bible is clear that we should have nothing to do with these fruitless deeds of darkness but rather expose them. We are to be light in the world, sharing the truth of God's Word.
Tap here to send us a message!God saves each of us to live fully productive lives and to bear the fruit of the Spirit. Fruitlessness can creep in when we cling to the flesh, stay in the wrong environment, resist correction, or miss the seasons God has for us. When we learn to navigate these challenges, a life that once seemed barren can burst forth with purpose and divine productivity.10/12/2025 - Sunday AfternoonScriptures:Luke 13:6-9John 12:24Psalm 1:1-3John 15:4-6John 15:2Hebrews 12:11Revelation 22:2I Corinthians 9:7
Christianity isn't about trying harder; it's about staying connected to Jesus. In this sermon, we're reminded that when we remain in Jesus, the Spirit produces fruit through us. Dr. Aaron Cole
Fruitless and heartless complaints, bemoanings of themselves and their condition, is the substance of the profession that some make. If they can object against themselves, and form complaints out of their conditions, they suppose they have done their duty. I have known some who have spent a good part of their time in going up and down from one to another with their objections and complaints. These things are contrary to the life of faith.
I read from fruitless to frustum. Some examples of fruitlets (multiple fruits that grow into one fruit) "are the fig, pineapple, mulberry, osage orange, and jackfruit."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_fruit The word of the episode is "fruity".
