On today's episode, I talk to musician David Bazan. Originally from Phoenix, AZ, David started Pedro the Lion in 1995, and his first full-length album It's Hard to Find a Friend was released three years later on Jade Tree. In 2005, David recorded a more synthesizer-focused album as Headphones, and then a year later, Pedro the Lion broke up. David continued to record music under his own name, releasing albums on labels like Barsuk and Polyvinyl, and then in 2017, Pedro the Lion got back together and began a five-album cycle, with each album focusing on a city that David grew up in. The most recent was last year's Santa Cruz, which came out on Polyvinyl/Big Scary Monsters. 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Headphones' lone album, and to commemorate the occasion, Suicide Squeeze just released a remastered edition at the end of May, and folks, it's just as fantastic as it was back in 2005! Though a rather one-off side-project, David Bazan says his Headphones LP may be his most stressful artistic expression. Though the band Pedro the Lion was his breadwinning endeavor at the time, he admits to losing interest in guitar, album by album. Suddenly, dabbling in synthesizers led to not just a new avenue for songwriting, but a borderline obsession, bringing his gear everywhere from lakeside family vacations to vacant movie theatre parking lots in order to perfect these unconventional sounds, alone. Putting the album to tape was a whole other hill to climb, leading to David staying up several days straight, attempting to finish incomplete songs literal minutes before the rest of his band would hear them for the first time, and then record them. But fast-forward to now, and the lone Headphones album is regarded as a crucial corner of David's discography, one that he's now revisiting with a new deluxe 20th anniversary vinyl edition, available in multiple color variants, from both Suicide Squeeze and Undertow. On this episode, David gives us the how's, where's and why's on the entire Headphones experience, two decades removed. Catch Pedro the Lion opening for Grandaddy this fall, as well as live streams of their 30th anniversary performances. Details, tickets and more are at  pedrothelion.com.

Over the past 30 years he has released dozens of collaborative and solo records as Pedro The Lion, Headphones and David Bazan.  This year he celebrates the 20th anniversary of Headphones with a remastered version of the 2005 release, complete with bonus tracks and additional liner notes by David Dark (out now via Suicide Squeeze Records). Joe asks David to look back into 2005 and share the motivation behind shifting from Pedro The Lion to a minimal synth based project and why he almost got talked out of it.  David shares some details behind the recording and why building a different drum sound for each song proved to be a fruitful endeavor. David tells us how he's working through a “burnout spot”, how his life has recently changed and why rehearsing once a week with Pedro The Lion has reinvigorated his playing. Seattle indie rock band Pedro the Lion gained a cult following in their early days, making Christian-adjacent music that saw lead singer David Bazan's reckoning with his faith and politics. After putting the project on hiatus for more than a decade, Bazan returned to the Pedro name in 2018 with the announcement that he'd be recording a five-album series with each record dedicated to a place he lived. Recently, Pedro the Lion put out the third record in the series, 'Santa Cruz.' Bazan talks with KEXP's Dusty Henry about making the record, learning to “re-parent” himself, and what he's learned about himself through the process of making these albums.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For 1990s and early aughts youth group alumni, Christian rock is often the source of embarrassment or shame - but does it have to be that way? The season finale of Rock That Doesn't Roll explores the idea that maybe, just maybe, the key to getting over angst about Christian rock isn't rejecting it or avoiding it, but coming to peace with the person you were when you fell in love with it. With insight from historian Randall J. Stephens (author, The Devil's Music), hosts Andrew Gill (producer, Sound Opinions) and Leah Payne (author, God Gave Rock & Roll to You) follow the story of David Bazan, a Pentecostal pastor's kid-turned-indie rocker who spent decades running from his CCM past. Along the way, Bazan founded Pedro the Lion, and gained critical acclaim, but his fraught relationship with evangelical Christianity and the world of Contemporary Christian Music haunted him. In the end, Bazan suggests that one way to make peace with a CCM past is to learn to be “the billy of your actual hills.” Thanks for joining us for the first season - it's been an incredible journey. It's the thick of the summer, which means your Transmissions correspondents are spending as much time in cool dark spaces as possible. One record that particularly suits the mood in our summer bunker hideaway is Gia Margaret's Romantic Piano. Though Margaret's 2018 debut, There's Always Glimmer, was the striking work of a singer/songwriter, when medical issues put a strain on her voice, she turned to instrumental music, first with her ambient leaning self-titled 2020 album, and now Romantic Piano, a collection of moving piano compositions, mostly instrumental, that feels at once meditative and comforting. It's the kind of music that carves out more space for the listener—and it turns out, it's the kind of music that did something similar for its creator.  In our talk, we discuss the intuitive roots of Gia's music, working with previous Transmissions guest David Bazan of Pedro the Lion, and much more. For every long-standing theater or music club in Chicago, there's an independent venue in an unexpected place: your neighborhood plant shop, a century-old church, or even someone's living room. Taking on a more do-it-yourself approach allows particular artists to make their mark by having a more direct relationship with longtime fans, while also introducing themselves to new audiences. This week, in the first of a two-part series, host Mai Martinez examines how four particular performers – musicians David Bazan and Andrew Bird, comedian/writer Kenya Elan and DIY producer DC – are paving their own way in this regard. ------------ Sources Used: ChicagoHistory.org Chicago Tribune More information on our sources: David Bazan: Website Andrew Bird: Website Fourth Presbyterian Church: Website Kenya Elan: Instagram

In this very special episode of Holy Ghosting, we got to chat with everyone's favorite rogue CCM songwriter, Derek Webb of Caedmon's Call! If you were an evangelical Christian in the 90's/2000's, you know who we're talkin about. Caedmon's Call was THE band of youth groups and Bible colleges. And as it turns out, Derek is quite literally from a Long Line of Leavers (SEE WHAT WE DID THERE?!) and after a long and successful career in the Christian music industry, he decided to leave Christianity entirely. He's made a lot of music about his faith journey, and has been refreshingly open and honest along the way. p.s. Derek is on tour currently, debuting songs from his soon-to-be released album, The Jesus Hypothesis. Tickets and info at derekwebb.comThat said, we were super excited to sit down and chat with Derek about alllllllllll the things. We talked about his CCM days, his “fall from grace”, deconversion, solo career, and all that fun stuff! (We also heard a little from his adorable pup, Etta.) We got into all the nitty gritty of evangelical Christianity and were floored by his kind and graceful way of speaking about the messiness of faith and doubt and everything in between. And we talked about David Bazan (because if you're talkin about deconstruction, it always comes back to Bazan).Just trust us when we say we had the best conversation with Derek and he made us feel a part of something bigger and it made us feel thankful for YOU (our Ghosties!) and this rad community we're building. Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Writing about the Bedhead career retrospective 1992-1998 for Pitchfork, writer Mark Richardson put it nicely: “Bedhead had no time for or interest in anything extraneous to the music…And this is what it sounded like—serious, intense, smart, beautiful, occasionally frightening...” Today on the show, we are joined by the Kadane Brothers, who founded Bedhead in 1991 in Dallas, Texas. Matt Kadane calls in from his place in New York, where he teaches history, and Bubba Kadane from Texas, where he composes music for film and television.  One of the defining bands of the “slowcore” movement, Bedhead had three guitars but was sparse, melding post-punk to humming Velvets-inspired intensity. Following the end of Bedhead, they formed another pioneering indie rock band, The New Year, and they've dabbled in side projects all along the way, including Overseas, with David Bazan of Pedro the Lion and Will Johnson of Centro-matic, and Bubba's ambient project Sigh of Relief. On this episode of Transmissions, we dig into Bedhead's history and idiosyncratic approach, exploring how they worked “remotely” and by telephone long before remote work was standard, the space carved out by Bedhead's unique sound, their cover of Cher's “Believe,” and much more.  Thanks for checking out Transmissions. The Joe and Smith Podcast: Read the Book of Mormon with us

A Smith and Joe exclusive! Joe takes it upon himself to read this week. It doesn't take long before the guys devolve into adolescent pp jokes. They wonder who took the longest to take out their endowments out of the last few leaders of the church. Smith doesn't like to use the word scripture. Joe makes a promise (that he later breaks) about a ‘yo kids are so perished' joke. This chapter teaches us that there is no other nation that would crucify their god. God reminds Smith about John 3:16. Smith talks about how being raised in the Western US is different from the East. Wanton eyes will probably not come up again (sad face). Joe suggests skipping to an Isaiah chapter because it sounds more interesting, even Seuss-y. The guys take turns doing bad Cosbys too. This chapter denounces priestcraft, while the guys in SLC probably had their grandkids help them sign up for direct deposit. And updated: Joe, or JS, may be ant wizards. The LDS godhead is confusing in the BOM. This chapter is very jingoistic, like maybe the worst one yet, USA! USA! Joe criticizes the church's reaction to news stories about child molestation in the church. Smith polls the audience, but they don't respond. The spirit shows up to weigh in on who is the better reader. Joe didn't know that JS had an actual sword. The spirit tries to spread a rumor about Lucifer having some of his ribs removed. The black-and-white thinking is pretty heavy in this chapter as well. The guys are reminded of some David Bazan lyrics where he's arguing with a god who sounds like the god of this BOM chapter. Joe still says oh my gosh. The US is a choice land above all other lands…barf. Joe gets excited about photos from the James Webb telescope. It sounds like Joe may have a hard copy of the BOM which tickles Smith for some reason. In this chapter, JS tells us to cheer up and choose happiness. It's very ‘of its time' sort of thinking. Will and Defoe. SWK was short, and boil-ridden. Bummer. Smith reminds us that his childhood friends who didn't take the church as seriously at the time are still in the church now. Smith has a teaser for a sort-of unboxing on the next ep.  David Bazan When We Fell   Music Provided by Eric VanAusdal with permission from the artist.
