On the Adventures in Filmmaking Podcast we share the stories of Independent Filmmakers. The challenges, successes, failures and why so many of us are compelled to tell our stories with motion pictures.
Jason C. Marshall and Julian Bate-Vergette
In episode 5 Jason and Julian discuss the pros and cons of DSLR and Mobile Filmmaking.
In our fourth episode we were fortunate enough to have local, Ottawa, filmmaker Deidre join us in conversation. It was one of the lighter chats we've had with lots of laughs. The challenges they face as well as their success and failures. Ultimately we aim to answer the biggest question of all; why are we compelled to tell our stories with motion pictures. It all started at Tim Hortons. That's where Julian Bate - Vergette met actor Dimitri Abdul Nour for an impromptu audition for The Silencer. Born in Lebanon, Dimitri moved to Canada in 2006 with his family. In high school, CEGEP and University of Ottawa he was a dyed in the wool theatre kid. But it wasn't enough and he also began to act in local films which led to more films and even commercials. However, it became apparent that his own unique creative voice wasn't being heard so he began to write and direct. Screech was Dimitri's first, solo, attempt at making a short film. Incredibly stylized and rich in theme, Screech was well received by audiences and film festivals. But something was missing. He did what he was supposed to, he made a film, sent it to festivals, it won a festivals...and nothing happened. Dimitri had learned first hand that winning awards doesn't equal fame, or a career in Hollywood or riches. This gave him some pause and while attending a filmmaking seminar during the Digi 60 film festival he spoke with a producer who asked him a number of questions that gave him pause. It was a humbling experience, especially after winning awards and being told by his peers he was a great filmmaker. In addition to being humbled, and leading him back to filmmaking basics, he learned that those around don't often provide constructive criticism. And without true, constructive, criticism it's impossible to grow in your craft. Never one to be stopped by small obstacles, Dimitri simply added all this new information to what he already knew/had learned and continue to grow his knowledge base and his film catalogue. Though that pandemic did slow him down. Dimitri is an extremely talented and resilient filmmaker and his appearance on the Adventures in Filmmaking Podcast shed a great deal of light on his knowledge and experience. Notable subjects included film festivals and the culture surrounding them. Rejection, as both and actor and a content creator. That art is subjective and, despite the message you intended to send, the audience may get something completely different from it. And the philosophy of being a filmmaker. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Dimitri Abdul Nour. It's no exaggeration to say that without Ken Bowman the Adventures in Filmmaking Podcast would not exist. Back in 2004, at the beginning of Co-host Jason C. Marshall's filmmaking journey, Ken came about to produce 'It's Getting Dark'. And produce he did, bringing his knowledge of how to break down a script into a production bible. For those unaware the production bible is a document that breaks down all the elements of a film so that each department has a clear idea of what's needed/whats expected of them in order to turn words on the page into moving pictures on the screen. The discussion about 'It's Getting Dark' did lead to the main reason Ken was invited on the show; Sound! Ken has a depth of experience in sound, working on small indie sets, live music, documentaries and fully funded professional productions. Sound, aside from story, is THE most important element when making a film. The audience will forgive a less that perfect image, but they will not tolerate bad sound. Yes you can ADR poor production sound (which most indie/amateur filmmakers don't do), but the importance of getting good sound on set cannot be understated. In additions to Ken's experience recording sound he also has a great deal of knowledge with post sound, having processed audio for a number of indie productions. ADR is a great option to have, but there's a costs to it. Trying to match your post sound to production sound can be extremely challenging and it takes a great deal of skill with audio processing programs because a sound booth doesn't sound like a bedroom, an open field or the inside of a car. That's not to say that recording production sound is easy. In addition to placing Lavalier Microphones (LAV's) on the actors someone has to operate the boom pole. Anecdotally boom operators don't get the respect they deserve. Examples of this are large productions that don't consider placement of the boom operator while shoot to small amateur set that put people with no experience on the boom mic. And it really is shame, especially at lower levels how little consideration there is for sound recording. Hosted by award winning filmmaker Julian Bate-Vergette and Screenwriting Coach Jason C. Marshall he Adventures in Filmmaking Podcast aims to share the stories of independent filmmakers. The challenges they face as well as their successes and failures. Ultimately we aim to answer the biggest question of all; why are we compelled to tell our stories with motion pictures. In the first episode Julian and Jason discuss their filmmaking background, both individually and after teaming up. Julian spends some time discussing his true* first film; The Silencer. From creating the first version to recutting/remastering it years later. Creating his follow up films Sleep, Catharsis and the Portrait. Catharsis having never been released due to production issues and, ultimately, not being prepared. The hosts also discuss the somewhat frantic pace of creating short films between 2019 and 2020. Julian also discusses making his most personal film, Sand and Stone and it winning the top prize at the Digi60 Film Festival. Filmmaking is also experimenting. Being, generally, unhappy with the finished films it was decided to go back to basics after watching a number of David F. Sandberg (Ponysmasher) shorts. Spirit Bell was born out of those discussions. Spirit Bell was an attempt to make a quick, simple and focused horror short. Ultimately it paid off with the highest number of views on youtube of all the previous films, and an annual spike in views at Halloween! Sadly Covid put many plans on hold, but once the restrictions lifted (for the third time) a new concept horror short was lined up to shoot. The Spirit Bell, a loose sequel to Spirit Bell was shot in November 2021. This time, however, planning was the key. By slowing down and taking more time in preproduction the actual production time was used far more effectively than ever before.
