He was inspired by his mother, who informally guided tourists in Ecuador when he was a child. Santiago realized his natural talent for languages and connecting with people, which led him to become a guide. He believes that the best guides are teachers at heart, eager to share their knowledge and experiences with others. Santiago's first experience as a guide was taking a group to Cotopaxi and Otavalo, and he was hooked from then on. In this conversation, Santiago explains the role of a Destination Management Company (DMC) and how Amazing Ecuador serves as a local partner for travel agents around the world. He emphasizes the importance of respecting the local communities and their ways of life when traveling. Santiago also highlights the value of learning a few words of the local language to enhance the travel experience. He discusses the potential negative impacts of mass tourism and the need to keep it under control to preserve the relationships and natural landscapes in the visited communities. Santiago concludes by expressing his love for the tourism industry and the connections it fosters.KeywordsSantiago Granda, Amazing Ecuador, guiding, adventure tourism, connecting with people, communities, natural talent, languages, teaching, first guiding experience, DMC, local partner, travel agents, respect, local communities, language, mass tourism, negative impacts, connectionsTakeawaysGuiding is about connecting with people and sharing experiences.Being a guide is a natural talent that involves teaching and sharing knowledge. The outdoors and adventure activities can help with personal growth and overcoming challenges.Being present in the moment is important in adventure tourism.Connecting with communities and learning from locals enhances the travel experience.Adventure tourism is about the connection with people, not just the destination. Broken Hill-born country singer-songwriter Raechel Whitchurch spent most of her childhood travelling in her family's country music band, before establishing herself as one of Aussie music's most recognisable country artists. But her path to songwriting was far from guaranteed. In fact, it wasn't until her family saw Kasey Chambers' family group The Dead Ringer Band perform in Broken Hill that country music became a family career. Her Dad thought it would be a great way to make a living, so they all became self-taught musicians. After several local talent quests, the Lee family packed their lives into a caravan and hit the road on two laps of Australia and a six-month stint in Arnhem Land performing in their travelling country family band, The Lees. Raechel, the eldest, was aged only 12, but it's a lifestyle she has taken on as her own into adulthood with her husband Ben and three children on the road as well. And as Raechel tells us on Streets of Your Town, her songs don't flinch from telling the hardships as well as the fun times of life in rural and remote Australia. Hi I'm Pratiksha and welcome to my podcast, Anyone Read This? Anyone Read This? is a podcast where I will connect or reconnect with people in my life over books we've both read. This is kind of a personal journey of mine, to reach out to people in my life and strengthen my relationships, using books as a common ground to do so. Don't worry if you haven't read each book, our conversations will be more focused on broader themes and personal stories, though I will provide a synopsis of each book at the start of the episode to make it easier to follow along. Thanks for listening, and hope you enjoy! :)

I've been examining how we can do a better job connecting with people. First Peter 4:9 exhorts us to offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. How do we show hospitality to one another? Well, there are myriads of ways to do that, but it means you will have to see yourself as the host or hostess rather than the guest. Someone who shows hospitality takes on the responsibility to make others comfortable, to serve their needs, to initiate a welcoming environment, to make the first move. That could be in any situation—at home, at work, at church, while shopping or traveling, etc. Show hospitality to others. Sometimes it simply means taking time to recognize someone and greet them, calling them by name if possible. Sometimes it means interrupting your own plans to help someone out. It could mean inviting people to your home for a meal or taking time to listen to someone's problem. It will require a servant attitude, a willingness to put others first, and truly connect with them. Peter says we are to show hospitality without grumbling. That tells me showing hospitality is not always easy to do. Putting others first requires an attitude that has to come from God's power in us, not from our own selves. It's possible to be hospitable with the wrong spirit—with a grumbling spirit. If you're serious about connecting with others and fulfilling this hospitality challenge, you'll need to pray about it. Pray God will give you both the desire and the power to want to connect with others, to expend the energy, time, and resources that will be required to put others first and die to your own selfish desires. Here's the good news: When you learn to do this, you reap wonderful benefits. You discover dying to yourself brings new life, as Jesus promised. When we get ourselves out of the way and make it a daily practice to put others first, we move into that abundant life Jesus came to give us. It's one of the paradoxes of the Christian life—that if we want to be the greatest, we must be a servant. By God's grace and for his glory, that can become a reality in our lives.
Do you approach your relationships as a host or a guest? The attitude that helps is to think of yourself as the host or hostess rather than the guest. Or, in more biblical terms, as one who serves rather than one who is served. Think about your daily interactions with other people—at work, at home, or church, wherever. Are you a host or a guest? For example, do you initiate the phone call that needs to be made or do you wait for the other person to call? When you're in a group, do you introduce yourself to someone new or wait for them to introduce themselves first? When someone seems puzzled or confused, do you offer to help? Maybe you're thinking you can't be the host or hostess because you're shy or introverted. I want to encourage you to give it a try. It may take you out of your comfort zone temporarily, but once you take that first step to “host” your relationships, you'll see that it really isn't that scary, and before long you will be comfortable doing it. It will surprise you to see the positive reactions you receive, and you'll feel very good about connecting with others in more meaningful ways. One of the reasons we hesitate to take the role of host or hostess in relationships is because we fear what others will think of us. I find when I am more concerned about how I will appear to others than I am about trying to connect with them, it's because I am far too self-focused. I have to stop and remind myself it's not all about me. I can assure you if you reach out to others in an attempt to connect in a better, more loving way, you will rarely make a fool of yourself. And what if you do? Does the world stop revolving? Does God stop loving you? We just have to get over our intense self-absorption. Another obstacle to connecting with others is our pride. How often do you hesitate to initiate a connection with someone new because you feel they should make the first move? If you find yourself thinking, “They should come to me,” it could be the indication of a proud attitude. Or maybe some of us hesitate to connect with others because it just takes too much effort. True, it does take effort and time, but the fruit of that effort is very rewarding. I hope you'll consider your responsibility to be a host or hostess with the people in your life, rather than playing the role of the guest. It makes life so much richer and fulfills our God-given responsibility to do unto others as we would want them to do to us.
I've been challenging you to think of yourself as a host or hostess on your job and elsewhere, in order to connect with people better. To initiate conversations, volunteer help, keep your antenna up for anyone who needs a word of encouragement. This is how we show Christ's love in a world that is starving for kindness and compassion. I remember someone giving a message challenging us to “leave it better than you found it.” Just imagine how much nicer our worlds would be if we all practiced that regularly—leaving everything better than we found it. Let's take that principle and apply it to our relationships. What if our goal was to make certain every relationship we have of any significant length—like fifteen minutes or more—was to leave that person better than we found him or her? To do something for that person would add value to their lives. It might be a word of advice that we take time to share, or a listening ear, or a book we could recommend, or an invitation to lunch. You know, people don't remember so much what we do or how well we do it, but they do remember how we made them feel. Have you ever thought about how you make other people feel? I'm sure you've thought about how other people make you feel. But reverse that and ask yourself, “How do I make other people feel?” Some people make us feel insignificant. Others intimidate us. Some people make us feel like failures. No doubt you can think of people in your life who give you those kinds of negative feelings. They may not intend to give off those vibes, but something in their manner or the way they treat you gives you that impression. Stop and ask yourself: Do I do that to others? I have learned I can send negative messages to others because of my tendency to be very project oriented and very focused on getting a job done. In the process, if I'm not careful, I can miss opportunities to recognize people along the way and send them an unintended message that they aren't important to me. I'm working hard to change those bad habits, but I have to be very intentional about it and remember to catch myself and connect with all those people. What kind of messages do you send to others? Do they sense you are a caring person; do you exude an attitude of acceptance and warmth? Obviously, I'm aware we can't please everyone, and people can choose to misinterpret us unfairly. But we also have a responsibility, as Paul wrote to the Corinthians, to take pains to do what is right, not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of men (2 Corinthians 8:21).
I'm examining how we can improve our ability to connect with others. I challenged you to see yourself as the host or hostess, the one who is responsible to make others feel comfortable, who takes the initiative to meet their needs and help in any way possible. For some of you, that means moving outside your comfort zone, I'm sure, but it is a way to show love and caring for people around you, which is our calling as believers in Christ. Another important connection skill is to consider everyone significant, and to take the time to learn their names and call them by name. In your jobs and in your life, you will meet many people. Remember they are all significant to God, and therefore, they should be to you as well. Don't overlook people. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you can do is smile and say hello. Often people in service jobs wear nametags: waiters, waitresses, cleaning people, doormen. Make it a practice to look for nametags and then call people by name. And if they don't have a nametag, take the time to ask, “What is your name?” In a world that is often cold and uncaring, something as simple as calling a person by name can bring warmth and a touch of love into that relationship, brief as it may be. Some years ago, we began distributing magnetic nametags to all members and attenders at our church. What a difference that has made in helping us to connect with others at the church. People I've seen for years I now can connect with their name. It is truly amazing to see how much better we connect with each other simply because of those nametags—we can call each other by name. If you determine to have a mindset that you are the host or hostess, and it is your job to find common ground with others and make them feel at ease, you will discover you talk less about yourself and focus more on others. Paul wrote to the Philippians we should count others more significant than ourselves (Philippians 2:3). How do you do that? Well, you have to be very intentional about it and pray God will give you both the desire and the power to do it. It won't always be easy. You'll find with some people you have very little in common, but instead of giving up, look for that one thing that could open up a conversation and help you to connect.
One question I am often asked is, “What is the main issue people in the workplace are struggling with today?” I've been in this ministry for many years, so I've had enough time to observe common issues and note changes in the workplace. But I can tell you one issue remains at the top of most everyone's list, and that is how to deal successfully with people! People! It's people! In some form or another, our relationships—on the job and everywhere else—cause us more frustration, create more conflict, and eat up more of our time than anything else. Of course, relationships also can bring great joy and satisfaction, too. I want to address this relationship challenge by talking about how we connect successfully with others. You will notice there are some people who seem to have no difficulty forming friendships, generating loyalty, creating community, and getting along with people, while others are woefully lacking in these skills. What makes one person better at connecting with people than others? And if this ability to connect with people does not come naturally to us, is it possible to develop those skills and improve in those areas? Scripture exhorts us to count others more significant than ourselves (Philippians 2:3), and to exhibit the characteristics of a truly loving attitude toward others. We need to find practical and effective ways to develop these godly characteristics of connecting easily and quickly with other people, whether they are co-workers, managers, employees, or just friends and acquaintances. One of the first things we have to do to connect with others is to make people feel comfortable in our presence. And we can learn to do that by thinking of ourselves as “hosts” in any situation. A good host takes the initiative to make others feel comfortable. Most people view themselves as “guests” in life, expecting others to take the initiative and make the first move. But if you will just reverse that tendency and think of yourself as the host or hostess, you will become more proactive in initiating conversations, offering to help others, and discovering you are beginning to connect with people much more easily. I challenge you to be the “host” as you go to work; see yourself as the person who will initiate connections, who will have your antenna up to be aware of others around you and be willing to get out of your comfort zone and make the first move. It is such a simple idea, but I can promise you it will make a difference in how you connect with others.

The holiday season is a wonderful time to reconnect with important people in our lives we don't see often. It's always fun when you've been thinking about one of those people, and they connect with you first. One of those people in my life is ‘Monty' Delaney and I kept writing his name down on my things to do list to call him. “Monty' (short for Montgomery) is an all-around great guy with a heart as big as his 6 '6' frame. Besides being a warm wonderful person I've known for many years, he was also once an attorney who never failed to show up on the dime whenever I needed him. Often to help me handle my former ongoing ‘parking ticket problem'. The ‘problem' was, I'd forget to pay the damn tickets and they'd add up and then I'd land in ‘negotiations'. Oh and he'd also show up for that speeding ticket problem. LOL. Happy to report I've learned my lesson and now I don't get parking tickets anymore and I drive like an old lady… but I still love seeing Monty. Just not in court. Last I saw him actually, I had some fun on his radio show. He's got a lot to talk about. Monty served as a police officer in the South Bronx for nearly nine years until a back injury led to his retirement from the police force. He spent a significant amount of time in traction and swimming pools for rehabilitation. During this time, he was also in law school, which he had to pause and later return to. he did, and after years of practicing law, a heart issue arose and Monty decided it was time to close his practice and focus on his more creative endeavors. Monty is a talented singer-songwriter. He became involved in the music scene, playing at coffee houses back when, and has made some great albums. His 1996 album "Walking in the Light" was inspired by various societal and personal reflections and continues to be played across the country and he takes pride in its lasting appeal. It was produced by Rex Fowler of Aztec Two-Step, which was oddly the first musical group I saw perform in person when I arrived as a freshman at Ithaca College. Monty had given me one of those CD's and somehow it landed lodged inside the back sleeve of my cars front seat. No clue why. I accidentally found it last week when I went to the car wash and was cleaning out my car. I don't have a CD player in my car, so I just put it on my front seat to remind me to call Monty. Then after the car wash, I made a cemetery stop to get out of the car to say a holiday hello to my immediate family in the family plot. (It's what Italian girls do.) What are the chances that when I got back in the car, there on my phone sitting on the car seat next to the “Walking In The Light” CD was a text from… MONTY! Really? What are the chances? Naturally I called him immediately to report the serendipity, and we had some laughs as his lovely wife listened in, and we caught up about lots of things and he told me about his new book of poetry out now called "A Musings”. It's a collection of poems he wrote over the years while waiting in courtrooms. I invited Monty to stop by the radio studio this week to bring his new book and bring his lovely wife Connie, but sadly he woke up sick the day we planned it and so he called in to the show instead. I think you'll enjoy the podcast of our live lighthearted and authentic conversation of two friends catching up on The Debbie Nigro Show. The show is filled with laughter, personal anecdotes, and our shared history that underscores my point about of the importance of connections and the value of personal relationships. We will get together 'in person' when he feels better. I hope I've sparked you to reconnect with someone important to you, that you haven't seen or spoken to in awhile this holiday season. Let me know.

In this episode of the Inner Edison podcast, host Ed Parcaut sits down with special guest Jonathan Rivera. Jonathan shares his insights on various topics, including the evolving role of copywriters in the age of advanced AI tools like GPT. He aims to debunk the notion that these tools will eliminate the need for copywriters, suggesting that they instead enhance their capabilities and allow them to handle more work efficiently. However, he acknowledges that not everyone will effectively utilize these new services due to a lack of understanding or skill. The conversation takes an introspective turn as Jonathan reflects on the impact of audiobooks in his life, particularly through platforms like Audible. He expresses gratitude for the mentors and influencers who have shaped his thinking and enabled him to pursue his passions. He also shares his perspective on the self-help industry, noting that many ideas are often repackaged and recycled, lacking true innovation. Jonathan believes that finding one's unique voice and focusing on a specific target audience is more valuable than trying to appeal to everyone. Drawing from his background in marketing and sales, Jonathan discusses the importance of creating content that resonates emotionally with the audience. He shares insights on evoking strong emotions, such as anger, to captivate viewers and generate engagement. The conversation also encompasses the speaker's own real estate journey, including the challenges of rebuilding after losing everything and the decision to venture into the internet business space through podcasting. Ultimately, Jonathan's story is one of self-discovery and a relentless pursuit of purpose and impact. Join Ed Parcaut and Jonathan Rivera in this thought-provoking episode as they explore the realms of copywriting, personal growth, and the power of authentic connection. #PodcastingForSuccess #InnerEdisonPodcast #ContentRevolution #KnowingYourAudience #BuildingBrandsOnline #FindingYourPurpose #GrowingBeyondRealEstate #UnleashingYourPotential #HelpingOthersSucceed #PodcastingAgency #CreatingImpactfulContent #TurningPassionIntoProfession #EmbracingChange #ThrivingAfterSetbacks #UnlockingOpportunities #TakingAction #PodcastingMentorship

Kevin McNulty is the President, CEO, and Co-Founder of Netweave Social Networking, an agency that works with multiple industries, including attractions, to amplify their marketing through effective social media. Based in Southwest Florida, Netweave found its way into the attractions industry through an aviation museum that connected the company with the Florida Attractions Association. In this interview, Kevin talks about social media strategy, connecting with people vs. logos, and using social media to drive culture. Social media strategy "The number one strategy of social media is to be the kind of company people want to say good things about." Regardless of the industry, the most important aspect of social media marketing is building a relationship with your audience. Part of this is ensuring that the messaging is not only specific and relevant, but also speaks the language of that segment of the industry. For example, attractions with animals under their care should ensure to say “habitat” instead of “cage” and “pool” instead “tank,” otherwise it may misalign from the organization's mission. Social media is a two-way street, and attractions must balance their outbound messaging with their inbound posts from their guests, and you don't get to decide what your guests are talking about online. Instead, it is critical to regularly be monitoring your social media channels so that you can respond quickly, rather than limiting your strategy to one-way communication with your audience. Connecting with people vs. logos "People want to connect with people. They don't want to connect with logos." If you had a celebrity spokesperson, who would it be? This is the question that Netweave asks new clients during the onboarding process to define the brand voice that will weave its way into social media marketing. By unifying the brand voice, the messaging becomes consistent, whether it is done through a third party like Netweave or a team of people on your staff. People follow you on social media to connect with the brand in ways that they aren't able to in traditional marketing. If your images are all professional photos that are perfectly posed and your posts are always carefully crafted ad copy, it doesn't have the same appeal as a more humanized voice that enables conversation with your audience. Using social media to drive culture “One of the great things about social media is that it can convert fans into evangelists… and it can do the same thing for employees.” At the 2023 Florida Attractions Association conference, Kevin and Matt presented a breakout session that introduced a concept that they developed together that ties into both social media and employee retention. They suggested that frontline employees be given a 15-minute “brand ambassador” shift that allowed them to leave their positions and capture photos that can be used for social media content. This would enable them to approach guests and take pictures of families, while also amplifying the amount of content that the social media team can use online. In addition to the marketing-related benefit, it also is intended to make employees feel more valued in the organization, knowing that they are contributing to a goal that extends beyond their immediate job duties. And in addition to social media, they would also be encouraged to document anything that they see out of place, such as paint chipping or a landscaping issue that needs to be reported. Kevin and Matt both look forward to learning how operators implement this within their organization and seeing the results that can come from it. This week we welcome Dr. J. Thomas Pierce to talk about his fascinating background and how we can better connect with people about OEHS. Dr. Pierce has been working in the occupational safety and health arena for half a century and his unique background in medicine, laboratories and the field gives him a perspective that is rare. Some may know him from his long running Action Level column in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health or his more recent work writing books that describe OEHS work through his characters. John Thomas Pierce was born and raised in southeast Kansas. A researcher and physician, he has practiced public health on four continents. He continues to be active in the Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) writing articles, reviewing technical works and most recently as an author. His fifth book “THE ONE-HUNDRED FOOT DROP” is in review now. His first two books were technical entries applicable to industrial hygiene and toxicology and published by the National Safety Council and the American Conference of Industrial Hygienists, respectively. His third book, Hospital Safari (Leather Publishing – 2005) described sub- Saharan medical care. Between 2017 and 2020 he wrote and distributed a book entitled “Million Dollar Speedway” that pioneered narrative storytelling in the environmental and public health fields. My copilots on my ride into work today taught this teacher a lot about connecting with people & I wanted to share those lessons with you!
We've been talking about the ABCs of Bounce, and today we come to "C" - Connecting with People and with God. In this episode we're specifically looking at Connecting with People. What is belonging and why is it important? Vulnerability, empathy, boundaries - we're discussing all this and more.
Happy New Year! While I'm currently working hard writing my book and getting ready for Season 5 of the podcast which is just around the corner, I thought I'd share with you a bonus episode taken from the livestreams I recorded during lockdown (which aren't available anywhere else on the internet). This episode is a conversation with Derek Sivers, a writer, musician and entrepreneur who founded CD Baby, an online CD store for independent musicians, back in 1997. He sold CD Baby in 2007 and has since embarked on other ventures including writing 4 books including Anything You Want: 40 Lessons For A New Kind of Entrepreneur - one of the three books that I've listed as changing my life. This is one of my favourite interviews from the livestreams and his advice on book writing felt particularly timely as I sit two years later writing a book of my own.
