Do Aliens Exist? Steven Spielberg Believes They Do

The Daily

Almost 50 years ago, Steven Spielberg directed “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” the story of an average man who discovers that humanity may not be alone in the universe. Over the decades, Spielberg has directed several movies about what would happen if humanity made contact with aliens. Would the aliens be kind like the title character in “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial”? Would they be cruel like the murderous aliens of “War of the Worlds”? And regardless of what the aliens were like, would we humans be ready to receive them? Spielberg returns to the question of whether we're alone in the universe, and what it might mean if we're not, with his new film “Disclosure Day.” Today, he sits down with Rachel Abrams, a host of “The Daily,” to talk about the film, and about what he has learned over five decades of making movies about aliens.   On Today's Episode Steven Spielberg, director of “Disclosure Day.”   Background Reading ‘Disclosure Day' Review: Spielberg Plays His Greatest Cosmic Hits What Steven Spielberg Taught Me About Fear, Catharsis, and Being Human   Photo credit: Paolo Pellegrin/Magnum, for The New York Times Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

#378: Are you tired of being told to "just let it out" when you're feeling furious, only to find the rage is still there once the dust settles? We've been sold a story that human emotions work like a plumbing system - that if we don't discharge the pressure, we'll eventually explode. But what if the very tools we're using to "heal" are actually just teaching our bodies to stay stuck? In this episode, I dive into why the popular catharsis hypothesis fails us and how the patriarchy has monetized our fury through things like rage rooms. We explore the difference between simply discharging energy and actually receiving the vital information your body is trying to send you. I'm sharing why your anger isn't a problem to be solved with a sledgehammer, but a sophisticated map designed to lead you back to your own boundaries and power. Join me this week to learn how to move beyond outdated catharsis models, why integration matters more than discharge, and how to listen to your anger with curiosity, somatic awareness, and self-respect. I'll show you how to stop bouncing your anger off a wall and start listening to the signal so you can turn that energy into life-changing clarity and systemic change. Staying true to their DIY ethos, Numbskull Narrative records and produces all their own music while also creating their own artwork—remaining fully independent at every stage. This week's show unpacks emotional exits, shifting gameplay, and the strategies you didn't get to see on TV, straight from two contestants who felt the full weight of the tribe's torch snuffings. The conversation kicks off with Angelina opening up about her intentional “under the radar” approach this time around after David vs. Goliath. She and Rob explore how self-awareness and preseason perceptions—especially from old-schoolers like Stephenie and Colby—shaped her experience. Angelina candidly discusses how her close friendship with Mike White impacted her game and what it felt like to lose him to a brutal blindside. Rob draws out the details on alliance-building, missed “Shot in the Dark” plays, and how Emily ran the show behind the scenes. Later, Charlie Davis joins to reflect on social media's influence on Survivor strategy, his processing of loss from season 46, and how small moments by the water well or campfire can turn the game. There's also an inside look at the surprising alliances formed with Jonathan, the evolving dynamics with Dee and Kamilla, and the infamous conversation about the Billie Eilish idol with Rizo. – Angelina reveals the emotional fallout of Mike White's blindside and why her quieter game was deliberate – Charlie shares lessons on navigating returnee seasons and managing social media perceptions – Strategic misreads, like Ozzy's tells and the trust game between allies and enemies – Funny camp moments, including Coach's 1987 toe ring and debates about papaya preparation – Deep dives into pre-game alliances, swap tribe chaos, and Emily's under-the-radar domination Can new-school flexibility outwit old-school “honor and integrity,” or are day-one perceptions impossible to shake? DEBRIS: A MEMOIR OF LOVE, GRIEF AND COURAGE Debris is a hauntingly poignant memoir of true love scorched by the flames of Australia's Black Summer Bushfires. What began as a casual online connection blossomed into a beautiful family, ultimately torn apart by tragedy, leaving behind physical wreckage and emotional ruin. Josie's mental health was deeply affected by the traumatic loss of her husband, yet her love for her daughter became an anchor, a reason to live and the quiet force that guides her through grief's darkest corners. As she learns to live with the loss, she begins to uncover what is best for her and her daughter. She embraces change, rebuilds with courage and discovers ways to heal. Written with fierce tenderness, Debris speaks to anyone who has loved deeply, lost profoundly, and found themselves gathering the fragments of a life altered by tragedy. TOPICS OF CONVERSATION Debris: Josie's love story, the Black Summer loss, and the moment she knew she had to write this book The “before” and “after”: what life looked like with John, then how everything changed overnight Inside the firestorm: what happened during the bushfires and the emotional whiplash that followed Grief in real life: parenting through heartbreak, mental health, asking for help, and the stuff people don't say out loud Finding solid ground again: what healing actually looked like for her, and what she hopes readers carry with them after Debris ABOUT THE AUTHOR Josie L. Smith is an author, visual artist, mother, and a public servant whose work spans memoir, community service, and creative expression. Her debut memoir, DEBRIS: A Memoir of Love, Grief and Courage, traces her powerful journey through love, devastating loss, and the long, courageous work of rebuilding after Australia's Black Summer bushfires. In her book, Josie narrated her life with her husband John and their daughter Ems, the tragic loss of her husband, and the emotional aftermath of navigating grief while raising their daughter alone. With honesty, courage, and deep vulnerability, she explores what it truly means to survive, heal, and find strength in the ruins. Alongside her writing, Josie is an exhibiting artist whose work centres on cathartic process, resilience, and the emotional landscapes left behind by trauma. Her exhibition CATHARSIS, Embers of Resilience brought her paintings and John's sculptures together as an artistic extension of the themes that shape her life and her memoir. Beyond her creative practice, Josie works in the Department of Communities and Justice in NSW Australia, supporting children and families through trauma-informed, community-centred practice. Josie uses her voice—in writing, in her art, and in her community work—to inspire others to face their own storms with courage and resilience. CONNECT WITH JOSIE L. Send us a textA bad mic can't dull a razor-sharp plan. We kick off with a wink to the audio gremlins and then dive straight into a Knots Landing hour where control, courage, and quiet manipulation reshape the board. Karen shines as a strategist hiding in plain sight: she pulls a $25,000 trigger, acts normal when nothing is, and lets the right people follow the wrong clues until the Don himself steps out of the car. It's not brute force—it's reverse engineering. When the “admin” mobsters beg for arrest to survive their boss, you feel the smart trap snap shut.On the other side of the cul-de-sac, a 6 a.m. telegram rattles Gary. Abby clocks the will before he opens his mouth, and that silence becomes the story: money vs loyalty, charm vs truth. Val packs warmth for a tour and freezes proximity, proving you can be kind and still draw a line. Gary floats the possibility of inheriting nothing and Abby hedges with grace, but his planlessness nags. Is he playing anyone or just drifting? The tension simmers under lunch, massage oil, and the kind of sleepy grin that says everything and nothing. We add texture with music and money. Ciji's earworm drills through living rooms as Ginger names her envy and stakes her claim, while Richard unveils a white-tablecloth gamble that looks expensive and sounds like avoidance therapy. The room at Daniel's buzzes with side-eyes, flirtation, and subtext, and the host translates each micro-beat with humor: safari jackets, pilfered shorts, oil-slick sheen, and the ancient art of reading a face that says “I'm fine” while the plot says otherwise. It all resolves in a quiet release. Karen laughs, eats like she's earned it, and lets the blood pressure drop: catharsis not from tears, but from a scheme executed cleanly enough to close a wound without reopening another. There is no doubt in my mind that we, as a nation (and, across the world) are facing a moral confusion if not a complete moral crisis. And, unless righteous, bold men step up to the plate, we'll continue to see the moral decay of everything we love from our favorite institutions, to our families, and our neighborhoods, and even the threat of losing this great nation. That isn't hyperbole. Today, I am joined by John Lovell, founder of Warrior Poet Society and former Army Ranger to discuss what we as men can do about it. We talk about mercy and justice (and, how to satisfy both), why we should hate injustice, the dangers of communism and socialism, why we must unite behind Truth (with a capital T), why "happiness" is inferior to "joy," and why we should pursue peace if possible but truth at all costs. 00:00 - Introduction & Catching Up 01:20 - Why John Wrote "The Lions of Mercer" 03:49 - Justice, Fiction, and Catharsis 07:15 - The Cry for Justice 08:07 - Modern Culture and Victimhood 08:51 - Loving the Good vs. Hating the Evil 11:44 - Redemption, Failure, and Public Dogpiling 13:01 - Loyalty, Forgiveness, and Standing by Brothers 16:14 - What Is "The Good"? 18:27 - Justice, Mercy, and the Role of Christ 20:15 - Judgement, Hypocrisy, and Accountability 23:07 - Integrity and Personal Alignment 24:39 - Happiness vs. Joy 26:39 - Teaching Discipline and Long-Term Thinking 27:03 - You Can Only Replicate Who You Are 28:22 - Wrestling With Faith and Christianity 29:02 - The Dangers of Atheism & Moral Relativism 31:05 - America's Moral Foundation 32:42 - Who Decides Morality? 34:12 - Rise of Socialism & Cultural Rejection 35:38 - New York, Ideology, and Consequences 36:36 - Unity vs. Compromise 38:41 - What Makes Someone American? 39:58 - Parenting, Boyhood, and Raising Men 40:45 - Why Boyhood Resurrected Was Written 42:38 - Risk, Adventure, and Rite of Passage 46:14 - Finding Balance in Parenting 47:09 - Trust, Risk, and Leadership in Marriage 51:27 - Why Should Your Wife Trust You? 52:21 - Leadership, Submission, and Marriage Dynamics 55:49 - Biblical Structure for Marriage 59:04 - Loving Leadership and Wise Authority 01:00:54 - Closing Thoughts & Transition to IC Segment 01:01:15 - Where to Find John Lovell 01:02:13 - Q&A Teaser Battle Planners: Pick yours up today! E. Lockhart understands the struggle of being a teenager. Her first novel We Were Liars was a standout YA hit of 2014, celebrated (and at times, criticized) amongst teens in particular for its twisty and devastating coming-of-age narrative set on a fictional island near Martha's Vineyard. Lockhart returns to the East Coast for We Fell Apart, her third book in the series, crafting another summer tale of mystery and self-discovery. In this episode, Doug Stuart and Jacob Winograd sit down with James Lindsay to explore whether the West — and Israel by extension — can escape what Lindsay calls the “trap of catharsis.” Drawing from his recent essay Civilization vs. Catharsis, James explains how our culture has replaced reason and moral responsibility with emotional release — a worldview that seeks justice through outrage and purification rather than truth and reconciliation. Together, the discussion unpacks how this mindset, rooted in critical theory and postmodern thought, shapes everything from social movements to the global narratives surrounding Israel, the West, and the meaning of civilization itself. But this wasn't a debate — it was an attempt to understand. Doug and Jacob press James on the taboos surrounding foreign policy discussion, the tendency to frame every disagreement as friend versus enemy, and whether defending the West from ideological decay risks mirroring the same tribalism it seeks to resist. The conversation wrestles with the spiritual and moral foundations of truth, liberty, and civilization — and asks whether any of them can survive without humility, repentance, and the courage to confront our own moral blindness.Audio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com Use code LCI50 for 50% off your first order at Podsworth.com to clean up your voice recordings and also support LCI!Full Podsworth Ad Read BEFORE & AFTER processing:https://youtu.be/vbsOEODpQGs  ★ Support this podcast ★

In this episode of the Building HVAC Science Podcast, Eric and Bill welcome Nathan Orr, Sales Director at Kalos and co-founder of Blue Rabbit. Nathan is candid, reflective, and unfiltered, sharing how his creative process—whether through writing late-night reflections or even experimenting with unconventional podcast settings—helps him process emotion and sharpen perspective. His insights reveal a person who values authenticity and believes in using catharsis constructively, rather than destructively. Nathan also dives into Kalos' growth story and culture. He attributes much of their success to embracing counter-culture thinking, focusing on training, and never being satisfied with the status quo. Kalos has become known as one of the best places to work because of its emphasis on excellence in the “little things,” respect for tradespeople, and willingness to challenge industry norms. Nathan also shares how HVAC School and other training ventures grew organically from the company's internal needs to develop people into professionals. The conversation then shifts to Blue Rabbit, a consulting and problem-solving firm Nathan co-founded. He explains its mission: bridging the gap between engineers, tradespeople, and customers to improve project outcomes before mistakes become costly. Along the way, Nathan sprinkles in his signature humor and life lessons—from practical roadside survival tips to reflections on regret, pride, and authenticity. It's an episode that blends industry insights, cultural philosophy, and personal stories in a way only Nathan could deliver.   Nathan's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nathan-orr-b525aa65/ Kalos Florida: https://www.kalosflorida.com/ BlueRabbit Consulting: https://bluerabbitconsult.com/   This episode was recorded in August 2025.

She also opens up about the mental‑health crisis she faced in 2019, the intensive therapy that helped her reclaim her voice, and the way music became her conduit for processing grief, insomnia, and the restless energy of a night‑owl musician.Listeners get a sneak peek at Reeya's upcoming August release “This Place,” a concept album that maps nine cities to nine core emotions, and we hear about the stories behind singles such as “Misery of Place,” “For the First Time,” “Runner,” and the soon‑to‑drop “Upstate Rust.”The conversation rounds out with playful cover‑quiz challenges, a nostalgic look at the Hudson‑Valley bar that sparked her creative community, and a heartfelt promise that when words fail, music always speaks.Stay tuned, grab your headphones, and prepare for an episode packed with candid conversation, lyrical insights, and a reminder that—no matter how dark the night—there's always a melody waiting to lift you up.And remember: when you need a mental‑health boost, BetterHelp is just a click away at betterhelp.com/music‑speaks.

We exist in a world of whispers, where we're constantly monitoring our volume, constantly worried about disturbing others. You're in your apartment, your house, your office - and the idea of just letting out a primal scream? It feels absolutely mortifying. While the world teaches us to suppress our voice, to stay quiet, to 'be appropriate'... ancient masters understood that your authentic sound carries the frequency of your soul's liberation. They knew that trapped in your throat chakra lies not just your voice - but your power to reshape reality itself. Think about it - when was the last time you actually let your voice go to its full power? When did you last express exactly what you were feeling without filtering it through 'what will people think?' We've been so conditioned to keep quiet, to be polite, to never be 'too much' that we've literally forgotten what our authentic voice even sounds like. For decades, this knowledge was hidden in expensive therapy sessions and exclusive spiritual circles. But what I'm about to share with you comes from the deepest levels of consciousness research, backed by measurable brain science, and validated by thousands of years of spiritual practice. Because here's what they don't want you to know: your voice isn't just how you communicate - it's how you create. And when you unleash its full power through the primal scream, you don't just release trauma... you literally activate dormant DNA, awaken kundalini energy, and step into a higher version of yourself. In ancient Greece, the Anastenaria rituals combined fire-walking with music and cathartic vocalization - they understood that sound could literally purify the soul and heal trauma. Tibetan monks have used singing bowls in their monasteries for over a thousand years, believing that pure karma produces clear, powerful tones while impure karma creates weak, distorted sounds. The Sufi mystics knew this secret too - their dhikr practices use rhythmic vocalization to achieve direct divine connection. Indigenous shamans across every continent - from the Australian Aboriginal didgeridoo healers to the Amazonian curanderos with their sacred icaros - they all discovered the same truth: sound is the bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.
