This week Flo is in the picturesque town of Wivenhoe, Essex for a slightly different take on Digging. She's meeting one of the UK's most quietly remarkable musical figures: Martin Newell. Singer-songwriter, poet, columnist and author - as well as the man behind cult guitar pop outfit Cleaners from Venus (whose song The Artichoke That Loved Me has heralded the start of this podcast since launch back in 2023) - Martin is a hero of the DIY music scene. In the episode, Flo and Martin chat about Martin's career as both cult musician, gardener and pot washer, and the art of the perfect pop song. The pair start by pruning an apple tree then take us on a little tour of Wivenhoe. Digging with Flo will be taking a pause after this episode, thanks for watching and listening along the way. The Memphis artist also known as Cities Aviv delivers 60 minutes of stirring electronics and industrial abstractions. Since his first release in 2010, Gavin Mays, AKA African-American Sound Recordings and Cities Aviv, has been living multiple lives. The D.O.T. label boss has put out work under various aliases, spanning post-hip-hop, ambient electronics and soul-inflected abstraction, consistently challenging and rearranging the scope of every genre he works within. African-American Sound Recordings is Mays' "side project"—as hobbies go, it's a formidable one. Since its launch in 2019, he's released ten albums built from a dense palette of samples: distorted voices drift alongside warm currents of jazz and acoustic instrumentation, painting ambient vignettes that swerve between the serene and the industrial. It's no coincidence that Mays cites Sunday service as a formative space. Samples of gospel worship and memories of communal ritual are the fil rouge running through the project, reimagining Black musical traditions as a living system. RA.1024 has one of the shortest tracklists in the series to date: three total. The final two tracks, gospel recordings ripped from his own CD collection, arrive like sunlight breaking through the clouds. My guest this week is sound engineer Dave Sinko, who returns to chat about The David Grisman Quintet. We've talked about that record a lot on the podcast, but this is less about the story behind the album and more about how it influenced Dave and informed the way he approaches recording. In his words 'it changed my life.'We chat about his subsequent work with members of the DGQ, including Grisman himself, and recording Tony Rice for a project with Alison Brown. We also discuss how that first DGQ record set the standard for what acoustic instruments could and should sound like, the contributions Bill Wolf and Bob Shumaker made to recording acoustic music and how Dave approaches miking instruments, based on what he learned from the first DGQ album, including on Chris Thile's latest Bach album, an extraordinary and challenging project to work on.I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. Flo is off the plot today and in the garden of British cultural icon, Bez. Bez found fame as the exuberant dancer/maraca player for the legendary Madchester band Happy Mondays. Since his days at the centre of the Hacienda club scene, he's become something of a national treasure - going on to win Celebrity Big Brother and is now a regular on Celebrity Googlebox. On Bez's patch, the pair plant out brassicas (kale and broccoli to you and me). Whilst they dig they chat about Bez's honey addiction, his various brushes with death, some dalliances with the Welsh tribes and permaculture. It's as wild as it sounds. ONE IF BY LAND, TWO IF BY SEAPAUL REVERE AND THE RAIDERS GREATEST HITS by Paul Revere and the Raiders (Columbia, 1967)This group, this record: they were fundamental elements in the experience of the 13 year old Captain Billy. My band, The Full House, played a smokin' cover of “Steppin' Out”; Dick Clark's WHERE THE ACTION IS tv show was a can't miss, daily after-middle school check in; I coveted those Vox amps and Mark Lindsay's ponytail. And, re-listening to this setlist 56 years later verifies that this band kicked hard and tight. Just ask Quentin Tarantino, who included two of the cuts for the soundtrack of ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. America's answer to the British Invasion actually started earlier, in 1958, in Boise Idaho, when keyboardist Paul Revere and sax player Mark Lindsay met and collaborated in the instrumental group The Downbeats. Revere was the organist's actual name, so the subsequent donning of Revolutionary outfits was a natural, if cringey gimmick. The fact that Mark Lindsay was also one of America's best rock singers was a secret weapon. The initial bombshell was dropped in April, 1963, in Portland, Oregon, when the group recorded the seminal rock standard “Louie Louie” in the same year and the same studio as the Kingsmen (the version everybody remembers): The Northwestern Motion Pictures and Sound Recordings, Inc. studio. But, that didn't matter. Yes, The Kingsmen's recording was a one hit mega-wonder, but, the Raiders became a national institution with a string of 12 top 30 hits. The first incarnation of the Raiders dissolved around the same time that this collection came out, but they kept reforming in various line ups until Revere's death from cancer in 2014. Like their contemporaries, The Monkees, there was a media hyped, manufactured quality (Producer Terry Melcher fattened their sound with the help of The Wrecking Crew), but the Raider's street cred as musicians was impeccable, and very few could wail like Mark Lindsay.

Flo is in the greenhouse today with Clairo, an American musician whose music encompasses elements of lo-fi pop, soul and introspective folk. She grew up on the internet, with her viral hit Pretty Girl landing on YouTube in 2017. Three albums later, Clairo's work feels like it's maturing with her, but still maintains the raw intimacy and emotional clarity that her growing fanbase know her for. In the greenhouse, Flo and Clairo pot on sweetcorn while they avoid a London rainstorm. During this meditative task they talk about growing up on the internet, their mutual love of the band Broadcast, the euphoric joy of soul music and how this is inspiring Clairo's new work. Flo is off the plot today and in the London garden of English musician, filmmaker, painter and feminist icon, Gina Birch.Gina's career spans the late 1970s and 80s when, alongside Ana De Silva, she formed The Raincoats. Through the 80s and 90s she continued to make music with Red Crayola and toured with Nirvana, as well as making music videos for the likes of New Order. Constantly evolving, her more contemporary work is in paint, film and more music. Her new album, Trouble, is just out on Third Man Records. Flo and Gina got so lost in conversation that the gardening barely gets a look in. Some green beans did eventually get planted whilst they talk about feminist icons, the Women In Revolt show, life in 1970s London and Gina's occasional wish to be a bus conductor. Flo is back on the allotment for another dig with pop star (and fellow NTS host) Olivia Dean. Olivia Dean is a British singer-songwriter, celebrated for her soulful blend of neo-soul, pop and jazz. Though she has many talents, it turns out digging isn't one of them - but what she lacks in technical skill she makes up for with enthusiasm. As they plants out some butternut squash, Olivia & Flo discuss song writing influences, her time at Brit School, the process of creating her next album and the art of being vulnerable. If anyone can make weeding (a mundane but necessary part of allotment life) exciting, it's Detroit party starters, HiTech. HiTech are a Detroit-based trio redefining the sound and spirit of the city. King Milo, Milf Melly, and 47Chops fuse ghettotech, footwork, techno, and hip-hop into a high-octane, genre-blurring style that's both futuristic and deeply rooted in Detroit's musical DNA. Their live sets, where they turn dancefloors into full-blown parties, have given them a cult following. They join Flo on the plot today to prepare the ground for future planting, whilst they talk about their origin story, the Beach Boys, why Milo will never do stand up comedy and their dream collaborators.
