Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2020 6:25

Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) is the highest enlisted rank in the United States Air Force. The highest enlisted position is the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force. Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Robert D. Gaylor is the 5th person to hold this position. Chief Gaylor was born in Bellevue, Iowa and joined the Air Force in September of 1948. He served in the security forces career field until 1957 when he became a military training instructor at Lackland Air Force Base, a position he held until 1962. After a few years back in security forces, he was selected to be an instructor at the Second Air Force Noncommissioned Officer Academy and taught there until it closed in April 1966. Following a security police tour in Thailand, Chief Gaylor returned to the states to assist with reopening the NCO Academy. In February 1970 he became senior enlisted adviser for Second Air Force and in July 1971 Chief Gaylor transferred to Headquarters United States Air Forces in Europe, where he traveled to USAFE bases teaching management techniques. In June 1972 he established the USAFE Command Management and Leadership Center, an in-residence, 60-hour course of instruction for USAFE NCOs. He continued as noncommissioned officer in charge of the center until his selection as USAFE Senior Enlisted Adviser in August 1973. In September 1974 Chief Gaylor was assigned to the Air Force Military Personnel Center, where he traveled extensively as a management and leadership instructor and then he became chief master sergeant of the Air Force in 1977. After retiring on July 31, 1979 Chief has continued to be involved in the lives of Airmen as well as in the civilian world. Chief taught, coached, and mentored leaders at all levels for USAA, a Fortune 500 company. In 2006, the NCO academy at Lackland Air Force Base was named the Robert D. Gaylor NCO Academy in his honor. In May of 2012, Chief Gaylor presented “A Motto For Life” at TEDxScottAFB where his “Hot Fries” story became an instant legend. Today, Chief Gaylor has taken some time to reflect on his enlistment in the Air Force and shares some encouragement and advice for future Airmen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/blueaf/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/blueaf/support
