Community-Led Monitoring has been on the rise in the HIV response. Known as CLM for short, it's a tactic being championed and implemented to ensure that communities play a direct role in monitoring and improving HIV services. This episode of PxPulse: The Advocacy Chronicles puts a spotlight on CLM in Malawi, where civil society and communities are successfully using CLM to connect government decision makers to gaps in HIV services and to what people really need. Thanks to persistent advocacy, both PEPFAR and Global Fund now recognize, through their funding, the critical role of CLM. David Kamkwamba, a journalist and health advocate and the former chair of the Civil Society Advocacy Forum on HIV and related diseases (CSAF), tells us what advocates have accomplished in Malawi and just how they did it. CSAF and AVAC are partners in the Coalition to Build Momentum, Power, Activism, Strategy & Solidarity (COMPASS) which has supported extensive work on community-led monitoring in Malawi and across the region.

Meet JenThe Air Force somehow managed to recruit Jen from Capitol Hill, where she served as a House of Representatives congressional legislative staff member for two Members of Congress during a 7-year career. In 2000, she joined the Air Force for the opportunity to serve and lead. In the past 20 years, Jen has held positions at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels and served as the Commander of the Air Force's largest airborne ISR squadron. She is currently assigned to the Joint Staff where she serves as a Special Projects Officer.Jen is a graduate of the Air Force School of Advanced Air and Space Studies and working on her PhD through Air University. She is also a graduate of the United States Air Force Weapons School's Intelligence Weapons Instructor Course—where the service builds its tactical experts and instructors. Jen's tactical and operational level experience includes two volunteer assignments to Korea and 3 deployments to the USCENTCOM AOR. Her strategic-level experience goes beyond her time on the Joint Staff. She served two CSAF's in a close advisory capacity through the CSAF's Strategic Studies Group and contributed substantially to benchmark international programs, airpower development, and capstone strategy development.Jen is currently writing a book on leadership and wellness. She also volunteers her time as a member of the Air Force Barrier Analysis Working Group Women's Initiative Team where she advocates for removing barriers that impede the retention and advancement of women in the military.Jen's Parting Thoughts1. Decide to put your oxygen mask on first! It may be a bit cliché these days to say this, but it's a must do. I learned this the hard way. Find the time to take care of you…and you'll have greater ability to take care of others!2. Create a wellness plan. Maybe it's 10 mins a day hiding in your closet to meditate while the kids play, maybe it's finding a professional to talk to, maybe you develop a fitness routine…whatever it is, just do something for you.3. As you do #1 and #2…Spend time getting to know yourself…who you really are, what makes you tick…personally and professionally. Rumble with your own vulnerability. And if you are truly doing the work, you will uncover things that suck…and that's the messy part. But that's okay. It's not easy work, but focusing on yourself and adhering to your wellness plan can help you work through it.4. Be yourself and don't try to be anyone else. Be okay--more than okay--with who you are. The world needs you.Recommended ReadingsBooks that inspired Jen as a as she worked through burn-out (more books and podcast links on her blog site)**Dare to Lead, by Dr. Brene Brown**Well-Being Ultimatum, by Dr. Suzie Carmack https://www.drsuziecarmack.comContact JenJen's Blog: www.jensaraceno.com· Email: info@jensaraceno.com· LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/jensaraceno1Twitter: @jensaraceno
In the aftermath of George Floyd's death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, what may have begun as peaceful protests against racial injustice quickly turned violent, as riots and looting broke out throughout the city, then rapidly moved across the country. The military was not unaffected by this turmoil, as National Guard troops were called up to keep the peace, military leaders shared their perspectives on race, and the services march down the road of introspection. In this podcast, we discuss the Pentagon's look at racial inequality in the military; on-base protests at Osan and Camp Humphreys in the USFK; the State Department's struggle with diversity; the outgoing CMSAF's hot take on racial injustice and the balanced commentary of the incoming CSAF; and the real numbers we're dealing with related to racially-motivated killings in the U.S. Show notes at https://thedigressionpodcast.com/26 Sound Off! About the Lecture: Lt. Col. Dave Blair (USAF) will discuss his book Chasing Jericho: Tactical Adaptation in the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron and the Eventual Sudden Collapse of the Atlantic Slave Trade. On the 25th of March, 1807, the British Empire turned from the primary backer of the Atlantic Slave Trade to its most powerful adversary. Between that date and 1867, the year the last known Atlantic slave ship sailed, the British spent tens of millions of pounds and lost thousands of sailors in the course of suppressing the trade. Their foreign office bribed and pressured European sea-going powers into an international treaty network against the trade, backed by Royal Navy cruisers. Royal Navy officers built a network of treaties with leaders on the West African coast, similarly by way of economic incentives, pressure and at times, force. The British were willing to act unilaterally, even assaulting Brazilian slave ships at their moorings in the Americas. Amidst all of this, the perennially controversial effort faced vocal doubts as to its efficacy and social value, and was nearly called off in the late 1850s. The outcome of this campaign -- the eradication of the Atlantic Slave Trade -- is remarkable amongst illicit market suppression attempts for its clear success... Without the campaign of the British Royal Navy against the Atlantic slave trade, which campaign is today largely forgotten, the immense work of William Wilberforce in declaring that trade illegal would likely have been meaningless as the slave trade would have continued much as before. More pertinent to the 21st century, the Royal Navy's strategy and tactics provide lessons that can prove useful in today's transnational security challenges. About the Speaker: Lt. Col. Dave Blair (USAF) is a Senior Special Operations Aviation Advisor at the Office of the Secretary of Defense, where he works on emerging aviation technology, artificial intelligence, and competitive strategies. He is a proud graduate of a Small Technical College on the Front Range of the Rockies (Class of 2002); he also holds a Masters from Harvard and a Doctorate from Georgetown as a member of the first class of the CSAF's Prestigious PhD Program. He is an Evaluator Pilot in Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), with more than 2,000 combat hours in six theaters of combat in the AC-130 Spooky Gunship, MQ-1 Predator, and MQ-9 Reaper.
