When we cover a news story on Art of Supply, we stick with it, even when it seems to have gone cold. In late August, we got an update on the case of the 53 migrants who lost their lives as a result of illegal attempted smuggling over the Mexico border back in 2022. On June 27th, 2022, an abandoned tractor trailer was found near Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. The truck had mechanical problems and it had been abandoned by its driver. A local worker heard cries of distress and opened the trailer door. What he found would go on to be declared the deadliest example of migrant smuggling in U.S. history.  In this bonus update episode, Kelly Barner shares the latest on the arrests, indictments, and specific charges associated with those allegedly involved in this crime. In this episode of The Life in the Carolinas Podcast, Carl is joined by Larry Baity. He met Carl a few years ago through a mutual friend, and they have been working on a project together recently. Larry calls himself a mountain boy because of his upbringing. Today, Larry. Larry's Birth [1:00] Larry says that he is a mountain boy. He was born on the 16th of March 1935 in Wilkes County in a small community called Oak Woods, a short drive away from Wilkesboro. He was told many years later that he was anticipated to be born. The evening he was born was a Saturday, and everyone was waiting for the Grand Ole Opry to come on. Early Life [3:20] He graduated from high school around the time of the Korean War. He chose to join the Air Force and was in it from 1953 through 1957. He did his training in the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Larry eventually talks about all his experiences during his time with the Air Force. God's Purpose [11:52] Larry almost drowned three times in his whole life. He always felt God had a purpose for him. He is surprised that he is still living today due to his experiences. He says that his upbringing is what made him the man he eventually became now. Curiosity [13:30] Larry shares another experience during the time he was with the Air Force. His curiosity almost led him to get incarcerated, and he had to sign a document that states that he never saw what he saw. He says that one of the greatest inventions of the US Air Force is surveillance. History [19:02] He's always told his children and grandchildren that you often experience history in the making, become a part of history, or making history yourself. He states that he was a witness and that very few people become part of history. He made history for the family. Larry says that one of his many faults was being too curious and pushing the limits. The Answer [20:18] Larry was often told that curiosity is the answer to questions. It might be hazardous to your well being and one of his little faults in life, but it has also revealed a great revelation to him through the years. And through all of that, God gave him longevity. Memory of a Certain Racetrack [21:41] Carl asks Larry about his first memory of the North Wilkesboro Motor Speedway. Larry responds by recalling a memory from 1945. He says that it was a unique experience because he's always loved the old Ford cars. Larry's Family [36:17] Larry talks about his children and grandchildren. His oldest grandson is a major marine aviator. His son is a part of the Air Force as well. His other grandson is a police officer. One of his sons is a nuclear engineer and another one is a lawyer. The youngest is back in Nashville. Life in the Carolina's Website - https://www.lifeinthecarolinas.com/

Dr. Mealey is a Diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology and is a consultant to the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs. More Information on Periodontitis:  New classification: The official proceedings from the 2017 Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions, co-presented by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), are now available online as a supplement to the June 2018 issue of the Journal of Periodontology. The print version will be mailed in late July, along with the regular June issue. The result of this landmark gathering is a redesigned disease classification framework that guides comprehensive treatment planning and allows for a personalized approach to patient care. Highlights from the updated classification include a multi-dimensional staging and grading system for periodontitis classification, a recategorization of various forms of periodontitis, and the inaugural classification for peri-implant diseases and conditions. Consequences of Periodontitis:  Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. With time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body essentially turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets between the teeth and gums that can become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may fall out or need to be removed. Periodontitis diagnosis is typically classified by stage and grade. After your periodontist conducts a thorough assessment of your unique case, he or she may assign a stage ranging from initial to severe that describes the acuteness of disease. Additionally, your periodontist may assign a grade which communicates the rate of disease progression and anticipated response to treatment.

Women in the U.S. Military during the Cold War

Unsung History

Nearly 350,000 American women served in the US military during World War II. Although the women in the military didn't engage in combat their presence was vital to the American effort, in clerical work as well as in driving trucks, operating radios and telephones, repairing and flying planes, and of course, in nursing. Women's active duty was a temporary wartime measure, but when the war ended, Secretary of Defense James Forrestal, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and General Omar Bradley, among others, argued for the continued presence of women in the military. Rep. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine introduced the Women's Armed Services Integration Act to Congress in January 1948, and President Truman signed the bill into law on June 12, 1948. From the end of World War II through the Cold War, women in the United States military navigated a space that welcomed and needed their service but put limits on their participation. To help us learn more, I'm joined by Dr. Tanya Roth, author of the new book, Her Cold War: Women in the U.S. Military, 1945–1980. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The episode image is: “WAF Officer candidate salutes in front of US flag. Dave completed training as a ground radio communications electronics technician.  There he diagnosed and repaired a variety of electronic equipment, including PC boards, Klystron tubes, and integrated circuits, as well as highly classified military electronic equipment, employing among other things, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and digital frequency counters. In February 1972, Dave received an assignment to go to Vietnam and was sent to KY8-38 Crypto School at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas where his top-secret military clearance was upgraded to include crypto access. Upon completion of this training, Dave returned to the 676 Radar Squadron at Antigo Air Force Station pending his November port call to Vietnam; his assignment was subsequently changed due to the official ending of the Vietnam War in September 1972. Dave's duties continued as before, with the additional tasks of diagnosing, maintaining and repairing highly classified crypto electronic equipment. Upon completion of his tour of duty, Dave received an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force. In 1975, Dave founded Stetzer Electric, Inc. and remains the president of the company to this day. Since the firm's inception, Dave has specialized in power control in industry, municipalities, and motor control centers. Michael Saylor is an American entrepreneur, executive, inventor, author, and philanthropist. He is the Chairman and CEO of MicroStrategy (MSTR), a publicly traded business intelligence firm he founded in 1989.  Michael is an advocate for the Bitcoin Standard (Hope.com) and is the first CEO of a publicly listed company to make a long-term investment in Bitcoin. He founded and serves as the trustee for the Saylor Academy (Saylor.org), a non-profit organization that provides free education to nearly one million students.  -- Full Bio Courtesy of MicroStrategy.com: Michael Saylor is an American entrepreneur, executive, inventor, author, and philanthropist. He was born to a military family in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1965 and spent his childhood living on various U.S. Air Force bases around the world. By his teenage years, his family had settled at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio—the birthplace of aviation and home of the Wright brothers. He graduated from high school first in his class, served as both class marshal and valedictorian, and was voted most likely to succeed by his peers.  Mr. Saylor attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on a full Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship. While at MIT, he was a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity, and obtained dual degrees in aeronautics and astronautics as well as science, technology and society. In his free time, he played guitar in a rock band and learned to fly gliders. Mr. Saylor became fascinated by the application of computer simulation technology to public policy and business strategy, eventually writing his thesis "A Mathematical Model of a Renaissance Italian City State" while studying system dynamics at the MIT Sloan School of Management. In 1987, Mr. Saylor graduated with highest honors from MIT. Having already successfully completed flight officer training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where he learned to fly, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He joined the Air Force Reserve and began a career in consulting, with a focus on constructing computer simulations to support strategic decision-making at companies such as DuPont, Dow, and Exxon. In 1989 at the age of 24, Mr. Saylor combined his passions for technology, business, and the use of computer simulations to launch MicroStrategy. The company was founded on his vision of helping enterprises deliver intelligence everywhere. By harnessing the power of graphical operating systems and client server computing, and pioneering a new approach to business intelligence called relational online analytical processing (ROLAP), the company grew steadily, going public in 1998 (NASDAQ: MSTR). Under his leadership, MicroStrategy has emerged as a global leader in enterprise analytics and mobility software, serving thousands of organizations around the world. Mr. Saylor is a named inventor on more than 40 patents. In addition to being credited as the inventor of relational analytics, he led MicroStrategy into the fields of web analytics, distributed analytics, mobile analytics, cloud computing, mobile identity, and IoT. He was also the creator and founder of Alarm.com (NASDAQ: ALRM), one of the first home automation and security companies, and Angel.com (sold to Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories for $110 million in 2013), one of the first cloud-based interactive voice response service providers. Mr. Saylor is the author of the book The Mobile Wave: How Mobile Intelligence Will Change Everything, published by Perseus Books in 2012. The book anticipated the impact of mobile, cloud, and social networks on worldwide political and economic development, along with the rise of Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Google as transnational technology leaders that would destabilize the status quo across most industrial and political domains. The Mobile Wave appeared on both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal Best Seller lists. In 1999, Mr. Saylor established The Saylor Foundation, which has donated millions to philanthropic causes including children's health, refugee relief, education, environmental conservation, and support for the arts. The foundation runs the Saylor Academy (Saylor.org), which offers free college education and continuing professional development courses to students worldwide. To date, it has provided free educational services to more than 650,000 students. In both 2015 and 2016, Mr. Saylor participated in the Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy. Mr. Saylor travels 175,000 miles per year to more than 60 cities and 25 nations to share his perspectives on enterprise analytics and mobility with technology and business audiences. Throughout his travels, he engages companies, organizations, and governments to discuss the ways that MicroStrategy can help them realize the vision of intelligence everywhere.

Her father, also a dentist, inspired her love of service and teeth, and she followed his footsteps becoming a Navy officer- a heritage that goes back to the Revolutionary War and earned her a Daughters of the American Revolution college scholarship. While she continues her service as a Navy orthodontist based off-base, she has a passion for working with civilian kids and their moms. Whenever she can, she moonlights in private practices, using her strengths as a compassionate communicator (with a confidently feminine charm) to help improve the self-esteem of women, girls, and boys, one orthodontic procedure at a time. She has lived in and visited over 50 countries in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, including her deployment with the United States Navy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to Al Asad, Iraq where she took care of the smiles of over 25,000 active duty, contractors and Iraqi security forces. After practicing for three years as a general dentist, she was selected to attend the elite Tri-Service Orthodontics Residency Program at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. While in residency she competed and won the title Ms. Texas, followed by Ms. United States 2012 and Ms. Galaxy 2014. The titles allowed her the opportunity to mentor young girls and show them that they can be and do anything- from beauty queen to Navy officer to orthodontist. At the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) Conference she was a keynote speaker, speaking to over 1,000 middle school girls for the Department of Defense in Japan.

Hands down, one of the episodes that I never could've imagined would ever happen. I've touched on the time I was in the Air Force on previous episodes. This coming March 20th will be 25 years to the day that I arrived at Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. My guest on this Full Length Bonus Episode of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace Podcast is MSgt. David Raushenberger (Ret.). My MTI (Military Training Instructor). This entire episode was surreal on a personal level. We go into his past, the reason why I joined, what led me to join his Flight from the initial Flight I was assigned to, I confess to some shenanigans that I would've gotten into a lot of trouble for if I was caught, he fills me in on some "inside info" on how they mess around with trainees amongst a bunch of other stories. One of, if not my favorite episode that I've done so far. Simply because of personal, nostalgic reasons. I hope you enjoy this one. Respect.

Dave Saylor | Ingredients for Long-Term Restaurant Success

Defining Moments

The restaurant business was tough even before COVID-19, but Dave Saylor, owner of Acadiana Café in San Antonio, Texas, believes two crucial ingredients make up the recipe for success.“What's let us prosper and stay in business for 34 years are our employees and our community involvement,” he says.Dave was once an Acadiana employee himself: he started as an assistant manager. Then about seven or eight years ago, he bought out one owner and then the other.Speaking about his employees, Dave is typically no-nonsense. “A lot of times, they bring me tremendous joy. Sometimes they just bring me a lot of frustration,” he says. He credits empathy for leading to Acadiana’s impressively low turnover rate.“Have a little more empathy for employees and understand what they're going through,” Dave says. “A lot of people have personal issues or health issues. If we can find a way to work around those and keep them working, it benefits us and they really appreciate it.”Dave also regularly serves up sizable portions of his second key ingredient for restaurant longevity: community service. Besides working with local churches, he’s put in manual labor for Habitat for Humanity and sat on several local boards, including the local restaurant association.Dave has also served as a go-between for the civilian community and Lackland Air Force Base, becoming an Honorary Commander of the 433rd Airlift Wing and the 37th Training Wing.“There are always opportunities for service — you just have to be open to them,” Dave says. “They'll come find you, or you go look for them.”The COVID-19 pandemic required Dave to tap into another set of skills that he thinks all small business owners need: “flexibility, innovation, and being adaptable.”Dave pivoted as best he could, setting up two new drive-thru lanes. But the situation was still tenuous. When Dave’s bank of 30 years put him on a waiting list just to apply for a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan from the Small Business Administration (SBA), he turned to Lendio.“If we hadn't gotten the Lendio loan, we wouldn't be here right now. When we actually got funded, it was like, ‘Oh my God, we're good. We're safe.’ So thank you.”Featured Entrepreneur

Astronaut food and other unexpected links between the space program and Indiana

Ever since the selection of the original Mercury 7 astronauts in 1959 marked the dawn of the U.S. space program, it's been well known that a significant percentage of NASA astronauts, mission specialists and engineers have spent portions of their lives in Indiana. After all, Purdue University has long been nicknamed "Mother of Astronauts." Less well known, however, is Indiana's connection to the dehydrated food that has been the chow for many of the U.S. space program's intrepid cosmic explorers. And then there's the Hoosier state's link to the physician who treated several astronauts who became household names during the 1960s, including Virgil "Gus" Grissom, John Glenn and Neil Armstrong. Hoosier History Live will spotlight these unexpected links just as space travel is receiving renewed attention with the recent launch of a capsule by SpaceX, the rocket company founded by Elon Musk that took two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. The mission "ended a nine-year launch drought for NASA, the longest such hiatus in its history," according to a USA Today report. (NASA had been relying on Russian spaceships to take U.S. astronauts to and from the space station). Note to listeners who may be day-dreaming about blasting off as a civilian space traveler: Your prep could be overseen by a Purdue alum who works with civilians likely to become the first space tourists. Our guest, Purdue historian John Norberg of Lafayette, will share details about various intriguing - but seldom highlighted - links between Indiana and the space program. A retired columnist for the Lafayette Journal & Courier who has been inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame, John has been a guest on previous shows, including those that explored Astronauts and Purdue and Amelia Earhart's connections to Indiana. So what's the skinny on the astronauts' food? A former Indiana farm girl who studied home economics at Purdue supervised the packaging of food consumed by shuttle crews for several years, among other responsibilities. Karen Pearson Ross (Purdue class of '71) grew up on a farm in Sheridan, Ind., and eventually married popular NASA astronaut Jerry Ross. Her husband liked to quip that he was the only one among his colleagues who enjoyed "home cooking" while in space. Both Karen and Jerry Ross, who grew up in Crown Point, Ind., are now retired. Our guest John Norberg collaborated with Jerry Ross on his autobiography, Spacewalker: My Journey in Space and Faith as NASA's Record-Setting Frequent Flier (Purdue University Press, 2013). In addition to sharing details about Karen Ross' cosmic culinary work, John Norberg will discuss Dr. Steve Beering, the former, long-time Purdue president (1983-2000) who died in April at age 87. Beginning in the early 1960s, Dr. Beering was the physician for Grissom, a native of Mitchell, Ind., Glenn, Alan Shepard and others among the original Mercury 7 astronauts. Dr. Beering, who was on the medical staff at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas then, later gave Neil Armstrong his first physical for the astronaut program. Dr. Beering went on to become the dean of the IU School of Medicine before serving as Purdue's president. Currently, Purdue alum Beth Moses (class of '92) is an astronaut instructor training people who will become the first space tourists. Although she works for Virgin Galactic, the company that hopes to send tourists into space, Beth Moses officially is classified as a NASA astronaut, according to John Norberg. She traveled into space on a Virgin Galactic test flight in 2019.

Reggie Thomas, a thirty-year veteran of the Lafayette City Police Department who recently retired, shares his journey of growing up in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, joining the police force in 1990, and how an effective police department works to build trust in the entire community in this edition of Discover Lafayette with Jan Swift. In the aftermath of the George Floyd killing in Minneapolis, public outcry has caused intense scrutiny of the inner workings of police departments nationwide. Retired Deputy Chief Reggie Thomas is in a unique position to comment on the need for change as he has lived on both sides of the issue: growing up as a black teen in the 9th Ward in New Orleans, he was exposed to rampant neighborhood criminal activity. Reggie was encouraged to escape his neighborhood by a kind mentor, Melvin, who led Reggie to join the Air Force upon graduation from high school. Reggie expressed special gratitude for Melvin, who took him under his wing, as Reggie's dad had been shot and killed when he was seven. The traumatic event of his father's murder shaped Reggie's beliefs as to how law enforcement should operate as his family never got closure on his dad's death or learn who may have committed the crime. In fact, the only call ever made to his mother was in the middle of the night informing her of the death, and the promise to follow up with a visit by police never occurred. Having never left New Orleans, Reggie was amazed at how clean and well-maintained Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio was upon arrival as a new recruit. It opened his eyes as to how the world could be. After a stint in the Air Force, Reggie returned to New Orleans and worked in corrections with former Orleans Sheriff Charles Foti's office. He remembers the New Orleans police as being "thugs on the street" at that time. There was no diversity in the ranks and Reggie understood why no one would call to report police harassment as "there was no one to call because nobody cared. No one (in a position of power) took it seriously." He shared an example of how he was mistreated right after he had gotten his badge from the Sheriff's office. Sitting on a porch with a group of his friends, police officers stopped when they spotted the group of young black men. "The police always stopped when they saw a group." Ordered to put their hands on the police car, Reggie explained that they weren't doing anything but talking and that he was an officer himself. When he showed his badge to the police officer, the officer kicked it across the street saying, "You're not a police officer, you're just a corrections officer." Sheriff Foti was quite upset at this incident, but it was representative of a larger problem of brutality for no reason. Reggie moved to Lafayette with his wife, Lisa, in 1990 when she enrolled at USL. Her brother was a recruiting officer for the Lafayette City Police and he convinced Reggie to join the force. He remembers the department as being professional and respectful of its citizens, but the force was not diverse and black officers were lower in rank. Off-color jokes about race were common and he had to look the other way more often than not. Reggie Thomas as a young man. He joined the Lafayette City Police Department in 1990 and retired after thirty years of service in May 2020. His career started off in narcotics which is dangerous work. And the worst case scenario happened on one occasion when he was returning from inter-department work in Patterson LA on an undercover drug deal. Reggie was still on duty, driving back down the highway in an old car and dressed the part of a drug dealer, admittedly speeding. He was stopped by a state trooper and ordered to "Put your hands on the hood!" While he didn't have drugs on his person (from the undercover assignment), he did have his gun still strapped to his body. Reggie explains the trauma of the moment, saying "I feared for my life, he was so rough,

We do a lot of Troop Salutes for service men and women who have been in uniform for years. We tell stories that are passed to us about achievements and accomplishments from years of service. Sometimes you can't help but picture that action hero character that we see in the movies. But the Troop Salute is not here to glorify only those tough veterans with years of service under their belt, The Troop Salute is here to honor EVERY hero who wears the uniform of the United States Military, or who has worn the uniform, or who WILL wear the uniform. Today we salute Kiarah M Burke of the United States Air Force. Kiarah comes from that last category, because she is still in boot camp at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Kiarah will graduate soon in the first week of September, and her mom LisaAnn Dickinson could not be more proud of her youngest daughter. LisaAnn tells me that Kiarah is especially proud of the fact that she can break down her M-16 and reassemble it in 33 seconds flat! That's an improvement on her last score of 38 seconds. It sounds like she's a great student, a great recruit, and soon to be a serious force to be reckoned with. LisaAnn says they live in Sedro Wooley and Kiarah grew up competing in the Logger Rodeo and placed in several events, so mom wasn't too surprised that her girl is taking to the rigors of military life so well. Recruits like Kiarah are the future of our military might, and when she signed on the line, she became an American Hero to us. And that is why today we are saluting Kiarah M Burke of the United States Air Force

April 16, 2003. San Antonio, Texas. Colonel Michael Philip Shue said goodbye to his wife and was supposed to drive to Lackland Air Force Base where he worked. But he was seen driving erratically on the highway away from both his work and his home later on. The Colonel's car then smashed into a tree, killing him. But he sustained injuries prior to the accident that suggested that he may have been the victim of a crime. Some of these injuries included: duct tape on his wrists and ankles, a six inch wound down the center of his chest and his nipples had been cut off. A world renowned medical examiner surprisingly deemed the Colonel's death a suicide. After Col. Shue's wife hired two other experts a different picture came into focus. One of abduction and torture. What exactly happened to Col. Shue? Was he suicidal? Or did someone want him dead? Can Justin & Aaron get to the bottom of this mystery?

Another delay for CSC and aerospace companies call on PM to move on Super Hornets In this episode of Vanguard Radio, Canada sends a CC130J to Texas to aid in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, another delay for the Canadian Surface Combatant project, and Canadian-based aerospace companies are calling on the Prime Minister to stop blocking the purchase of the Super Hornet fighter jets.   Show Notes:   A Royal Canadian Air Force CC130J Hercules left Canada recently for the Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, carrying humanitarian supplies including baby formula, blankets, cribs, and similar items to aid in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.   The Government of Canada offered to assist with relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and the offer was accepted by the US.   Hurricane Harvey has caused a mandatory evacuation of approximately 750,000 people with an additional 1.1 million people who are under a voluntary evacuation order along the Gulf Coast.   Hurricane Harvey was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005, ending a record 12-year drought in which no major hurricanes made landfall in the country. Harvey caused at least 71 confirmed deaths; 1 in Guyana, and 70 in the United States. Harvey is considered the worst disaster in Texas history, and the recovery will take many years. Economic losses are preliminarily estimated at between $70 to $200 billion, with a large portion of the losses sustained by uninsured homeowners.   CSC delays again   The Canadian Surface Combatant program is heading into another delay, the deadline for the RFP for this program is now expected to be in November, moving from August. That means the decision on which off-the-shelf design to go with for the CSC project is being delayed until next year late winter or early spring.   Lisa Campbell, assistant deputy minister of defence and marine procurement, said the delay will not affect the overall timeline for the program.   "It's not going to affect ship construction, which is still planned to start in the early 2020s," Campbell told CBC News in an interview.   According to reports, the procurement plan was more complex than initially advertised and needed to be rewritten. Some of the 12 prequalified bidders complained about tight timelines.   Super Hornet   Ten Canadian-based aerospace companies are calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to stop blocking the purchase of 18 Super Hornet fighter jets. These companies are arguing they stand to suffer from the government's unwavering support of Bombardier Inc. in a trade dispute with Boeing Co.   A letter sent recently by senior executives from firms such as L-3 MAS, CAE and GE Canada, reads, "Prime Minister, we ask for your co-operation as we work with Boeing to keep our collective growth and innovation story unfolding here in Canada. Our partnership is deep and enduring, but it needs your engagement."   The letter, which calls on the government to advance "aerospace for all of Canada," is the most recent development in an increasingly bitter dispute between the Canadian government and Boeing.

Stephen is the CEO of Predictive ROI and host of the Onward Nation podcast. He is the author of two bestselling books, speaker, trainer, and his digital marketing insights have been featured in SUCCESS, Entrepreneur, The Washington Post, Forbes, Inc. Magazine, and other media.   Good Morning Onward Nation...I’m Stephen Woessner. And before we jump into today’s solocast topic -- I want to say thank you for all of the thoughtful and specific feedback following last week’s solocast, episode 158...which I entitled, “How to defeat the imposter syndrome.” I love feedback -- good or bad -- and often encourage it at the end of my solocasts. But last week’s solocast was followed by more feedback than normal...and I am grateful. I received notes via email, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. I appreciate the kind words -- but even more so -- for the insights into how the discussion helped. It is always awesome to find out someone likes what you have to say -- and it is so rewarding to hear the connecting points between what is being shared and an experience. Those are powerful and I am grateful -- thank you, Onward Nation. So same request goes for today’s solocast -- please let me know what you think -- thumbs up or thumbs down -- I want to know what you think and appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. It is a gift, a privilege, and an honor to be with you each and every day. It is important to me that you know how much I appreciate your time -- I consider your time sacred -- because it is -- and am looking forward to spending time with you this morning delving into yet another deep topic that affects all of us. So for today’s solocast...I am going to focus our attention toward an obstacle we all experience -- something we all face. In fact, it is fair to say that everyone on Earth faces it no matter who they are. The obstacle is art of making excuses...or “alibis” as Napoleon Hill described them in in his timeless work, "Think & Grow Rich." Hill goes on to explain that “Building alibis or excuses with which to explain any failure has become a national pastime. The habit is as old as the human race and is fatal to success. People defend their alibis because they create them. A person’s alibi is the child of his own imagination. It is human nature to defend one’s own brainchild.” I am not going to get political -- I have no conversation for you there whatsoever -- but I will set Washington as a prime example of excuses -- and then defending one’s position vehemently -- and sometimes until the bitter end. Instead -- an intelligent, non-defensive discussion that leads to a win-win compromise is often the best policy. In an effort to dig deep into this topic...let’s examine some of the most common excuses Hill shares in his book. People who fail to succeed have one distinguishing trait in common. They know all the reasons for failure and have what they believe to be airtight excuses to explain away their own lack of achievement. Some of the excuses are clever -- and a few of them justifiable by the facts. As I read you the list -- examine yourself -- your thoughts -- your actions carefully and think about how many -- if any -- of these excuses you have used. I will say this -- if you are open and honest as I share this list with you -- it may be a painful process -- as it was for me when I first reviewed and considered the list. In fact, as I read it the first time...I highlighted 17 excuses off the list and set about to resolve those and eliminate them from my thought process. Please listen to the podcast for Napoleon Hill's complete list of excuses. And...here is the greatest excuse of them all, Onward Nation… “If I had the courage to see myself as I really am, I would find out what is wrong with me and correct it, then I might have a chance to profit by my mistakes and learn something from the experience of others, for I know that there is something wrong with me, or I would now be where I would have been if I had spent time analyzing my weaknesses, and less time building excuses to cover them.” This is a lesson -- about the greatest excuse -- is a lesson that I tend to learn and relearn over and over again. One of the most painful examples was taught to me was in June of 1990. I was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas for basic training. About midway through our training, we were asked if anyone was interested in volunteering and trying out for the Air Force special forces. Uh Rah! Count me in. So I volunteered to spend that Saturday gritting it out with the best on the base to see who would make the cut. It was a long day...by the end...I was beat down. I was tired...had swam a mile and a half. Had run a mile and a half. Had just done pull ups, sit ups, and a variety of other exercises. I was hot, I was sweaty, I was exhausted. My energy level was beat to the pulp. But it was time for push ups, which perked up my energy level a bit because push ups had normally been a decent exercise for me. This time...it came with specific instructions, which I failed to hear. And it wasn’t because the instructions weren’t loud enough -- oh no -- our instructors did not have an issue with volume. The instructions were to perform the movement in stages...you would lower your chest to the mat until you touched your spotter’s fist with your chest...and then raise yourself back to the starting position...hold yourself there for a beat...and rinse and repeat. All the while...I needed to be looking face up...not down at the mat...throughout the entire movement. If any of these instructions were not followed...the repetition would not be counted. I was feeling confident because this was “my” exercise -- I knew I could bang out a bunch of reps despite being exhausted so I was excited to get started -- so excited -- that I did not pay close attention to the instructions. I thought -- very arrogantly -- that I had this competition “in the bag” and based on my previous swim, run, etc. Yeah! I was going to be a candidate for the special forces. Well, I was about to learn how painful it can be to come up short -- and the creative force to making up excuses that followed. When the instructor yelled, “begin”...the race was on and we were on the clock to see how many push ups we could complete within the specified time. I was so concerned about speed...and quantity...I failed to perform a critical step. I was looking down at the mat during the completion of each rep for the first four...instead of “eyes front.” It was after four repetitions, that my spotter pointed out my mistake, and I made the correction on my fifth repetition -- and then my heart sank when I heard my spotter say loudly count out...“ONE”. Oh no...I was at least four reps behind. And I never did catch up. By the time the exercise was over...I was still four reps behind the pack...and I knew I was probably sunk. Then it was the long wait for the instructors to tabulate our scores and announce their selections. If you were selected, your normal basic training would be over and you would immediately join the special forces training program -- first stop -- the Bahamas for scuba diving. Um...yes, please! But, when the instructor came out to announce the list of names...mine was not called. I had missed the cut by four points. I had battled all day -- and lost by four points. But did I blame myself for not following the very specific -- very loud -- and clearly articulated instructions? No. I blamed my spotter. For what? For doing his job? He wasn’t supposed to count bad reps -- and he did me a favor by even telling me about my mistake. He didn’t have to do that. He, too was competing to win a spot on the list. But he did tell me. My success was up to me, Onward Nation. Not him. And yet I blamed him. Deep down inside, I couldn’t bare the thought that it was me who had failed -- and to Napoleon Hill’s point -- I then created an alibi that rationalized the loss and tried to make it sting a little less. Several weeks later, I learned from the mistake at I made at the special forces qualification. I was outside my dorm on a break with my squad...and a drill instructor...not assigned to our squad decided to come up and harass us to see if she could get us to misspeak, not follow protocol, or make some other mistake. And for whatever reason, I was the lucky one she picked. Not awesome. I don’t remember the line of questioning she bombarded me with -- but -- I missed something and made a mistake. I next found myself standing outside my squadron commander’s office in the hallway. My drill instructor had been summoned -- we made eye contact as he walked down the hallway -- and he shook his head in disappointment. As I was called into my commander’s office to explain the situation, they were looking for any sign of weakness -- of excuse making. I didn’t provide one. I apologized for the situation and accepted full responsibility without excuse. I passed. But why? Because I didn’t throw someone under the bus. I stood up and acknowledged the situation -- accepted responsibility -- and then moved on. And it has been my experience in business and in life -- and likely yours, too -- that if we simply acknowledge our mistake -- as hard as that may be to do -- set our ego aside and apologize -- and accept responsibility -- then our customers, employees, spouse, or children are more willing to forgive us because everyone makes mistakes. But no one likes excuses. Michael Jordan famously said, that “A loss isn’t a failure until you make an excuse.” When you make excuses -- you lose credibility -- you lose the respect of your peers -- and you run the risk of damaging relationships. So stop the excuses, Onward Nation. Forget the alibis -- do your best every time -- own your mistakes -- learn from them -- and you will achieve success and greatness. You were indeed meant for greatness. You are a child of the most high God. You are instilled with an infinite abundance of talent and gifts. How can I be so sure, you might ask? Because Luke Chapter 17, Verse 21 says so. The scripture reads, “The Kingdom of God is within you.” The kingdom of God is indeed great...and if the kingdom is within you...then that makes you great, Onward Nation. So please don’t let something so small as making excuses -- and creating elaborate alibis -- cheat you from your success...your greatness...your destiny! So with that said... What are the commonalities of veteran suicides? How should we, as survivors, react to suicide? What solutions are proving the most effective at combating the veteran suicide rate? Do mental health first aid techniques work? Has there been a change in the veteran suicide rate related to the publicity of this issue? Are suicides more related to transitioning out of the military and finding purpose than PTSD and bad memories/dreams? Are there direct or indirect connections between medications prescribed to veterans and suicide risk?

I’m excited because we are going to continue the momentum we have been building over the last several solocasts where we have begun to uncover what I call the Money Draining Mistakes. These are the mistakes that we all make – yes, everyone one of us from time to time – have made these mistakes in our business – and the net result is that cash has been literally sucked right out of our companies. Very expensive. And yes, I know that sounds a bit overly dramatic but when I share today’s Money Draining Mistake with you – by the end of this episode – my hope for you is that you will see why I consider this one – this mistake – to be one of the most expensive.   It is a silent killer for most businesses. But before we jump into this one – I want to go back to the two biggest challenges that are preventing you from moving your business onward to that next level because those challenges – those barriers to your success have nothing to do the business climate, the economy, the skill level of your employees, the location of your business, your pricing strategy, your current customer base, the size of your marketing budget, the quality of your products, your distribution channels, or the myriad of other reasons we are given today by the media and government as to why businesses fail at such a staggering rate in this country. The obstacles in your way have nothing to do with any of those things.   Your two biggest obstacles are the Fear of Poverty and the Fear of Criticism. I am not going to dissect both of these Fears here – instead, I encourage you to go back and re-listen to episode 65 to understand both fears more deeply – but what I will say is that the Fear of Criticism will directly impact your ability to stay plugged in to this episode and push forward to really want to master the recipe that I share with you during our time together this morning. I guarantee you...if you are like most business owners…as soon as I say the words “Bounce Rate” as part of today’s recipe – you will begin to tune out and lose interest. Or, as I share “data points”...as I discuss things like the “psychology of your customer”, or need to create “clear calls-to-action.” It will be real easy for you to say something like, “I have someone on my team who does that, Stephen...I don’t have to know it.” Why do I think you will say or at least think that? Because you – me – we are all afraid of the unknown. We are uncertain – we are afraid we might fail to understand the concept – the lesson. And so the best way for us to defend against that fear – to protect ourselves – is for us to say, “Oh Stephen, I don’t need to know that because someone on my team gets it...they have it down. I’m all set.” Do they? Do they really? And if you don’t understand it – how can you possibly hope to measure their success in it? Discounting the potential knowledge without really understanding the value of the knowledge is sort of like when we were all back in high school and it came time for Algebra or Biology class – or insert the name of your scary class here – and we tried to convince ourselves that we would never need to have access to that knowledge in our lifetime. Somehow we felt prepared to make that decision at 16 or 17 years old. And yet, if you were to sit down with someone like Mark Cuban, one of the acclaimed investors from Shark Tank and ask him what he wishes he would have done a better job of learning along the way…he readily admits…that he would have done a better job studying those things that he quickly discounted – that he told himself he would never need – and now he wishes he had mastered those skills early on…things like Algebra, Biology, and so forth. So this episode – episode 89 – you need to know that I am likely going to push you...to push your Fear of Criticism. But in full transparency – I think that is part of my job to help you grow – to help you become more certain – to help you reach that next level. And as my drill instructor said to me once – well, he actually shouted it to me one morning – I think he just wanted to be sure I heard him and never forgot the message – he stood over top of me as I was doing sit ups during PT one morning in basic training…it was June of 1990 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas...5:00 in the morning and it was already about 90 degrees – how was that even possible – and as I was doing each repetition – St. Hodge looked down at me and yelled, “Airman Woessner, you are required to perform 25 repetitions of this exercise. HOWEVER...you are encouraged to do more.” He set the standard of excellent for me that morning. The standard was not the bare minimum of doing what was required – knowing what you had to know – or doing the least possible with as little effort as necessary. No, the standard was more – a lot more – and undefined – my standard – my bar was to do the most repetitions that I could possibly do – my personal best – to pursue excellence – and I never forgot the message – and now I pass it on to you. So to get that next level – you need to learn things you didn’t think you needed to learn – to master skills that someone on your team may also know – and to execute and implement with a standard of excellence – not the bare minimum. You Onward Nation are not average. You Onward Nation have a different standard. You Onward Nation are moving your business to that next level. And you do that by pushing past the Fear of Criticism – the fear of failure – the fear of not thinking you are worthy or smart enough.   Because you are smart enough – you can absolute master this...and this...Onward Nation...is Money Draining Mistake #3...High Bounce Rate. Are you ready to move onward with gusto? Let’s start this off with a scenario that happens every day within a typical business… Someone visits the website’s home page, a product page, or perhaps a blog post the business owner wrote. The person quickly scans the page from top to bottom, left to right, and after a second or two, they decide they hate it. They puke in a bucket and then immediately leave. And they continuing searching...except they continue searching SOMEPLACE ELSE. That person “bounced” because he or she was not motivated enough to make one single click within the site. Bounce rate is one of the most powerful metrics we have because it gives us insight into whether or not our customers believe we are delivering the value they want and need. Most un-optimized websites have a bounce rate between 50 to 60 percent (this represents huge opportunity for you if you apply steps 1-2-3 below). In other words, after all of the hard work you put toward building traffic through trade shows, advertising, public relations, email campaigns, content development, social media, and search engine optimization, between 50 and 60 percent of the people you attract will immediately leave without making one single click. And that is why I called this mistake the silent killer way back in my introduction to this episode. Let’s do a quick test. Pause this episode, open your Google Analytics dashboard, and check your bounce rate. If it 30 percent or less, give yourself a pat on the back because that is the target you should strive to reach. But if your bounce rate is above 50 percent, then the rest of this article will provide you with three steps you can apply to drive down bounce rate while converting more of your traffic into leads and sales. Let’s first calculate the dollar value that bounce rate is currently costing you. Say your website attracted 12,539 unique visitors during the past 12-months. And let’s say your website bounce rate is currently right in the middle of the 50 to 60 percent range (54.88 percent to be exact). That means 6,881 site visitors immediately bounced from your website during those 12-months (12,539 x .5488 = 6,881). The remaining 5,659 were the suspects you could attempt to convert into a lead or sale through some form of call-to-action, such as a phone call, visit to your store, etc. Now, let’s say your call-to-action process has been fine-tuned over the years so 4.77 percent of your suspects are converted into leads (between 2 to 4 percent is the global standard). This means 270 leads, phone calls, store visits, etc. were generated during the 12-months (5,659 suspects x .0477 conversion rate = 270). And lastly, let’s assume you have a history of converting 50 percent of your leads, such as inquiries, phone calls, store visits, etc. into sales, and each sale has an average value of $500. The revenue generated via your website should have been approximately $67,500 (270 x .5000 = 135 sales x $500 value = $67,500). Now, let’s lower bounce rate to the target level of 30 percent. I first learned about the 30 percent target from my friend and mentor, Avinash Kaushik, digital marketing evangelist for Google and co-founder of Market Motive. You can learn more about Avinash in episode 40 of Onward Nation. Now only 3,761 of the visitors bounce during the same 12-month time period (12,539 x .3000 = 3,761). You now have 8,778 suspects instead of 5,659. Big difference. Let’s also assume you maintained your 4.77 percent conversion rate into leads and your average order remained at $500. Your 8,778 suspects would convert into 418 leads, and those leads would convert into 209 sales, which would result in $104,500 in revenue (418 x .0477 = 418 x .5000 = 209 x $500 = $104,500). This represents a 54.81 percent increase in sales. Awesome. And the only thing that changed was bounce rate. Here’s the good news...any business owner can apply three simple steps to reduce bounce rate. At the bottom of this today’s Show Notes you will find a mini-class I recorded to provide some additional bounce rate insights. Free video training resource – I hope you find it valuable. So what is the first step?   We – and our business – must be distinctive. Now, distinction is not just about being different. Distinction creates loyal customers who continue coming back to you over and over again. If you want to learn more about distinction – go back to episode 1 and listen to the words of wisdom from Scott McKain, the leading authority on the topic of distinction and its importance in your business. And one of the very best recipes for how to create distinction is one that I learned from Darren Hardy, publisher of SUCCESS Magazine. Darren calls it the X-Y-Z Exercise and there are 3 simple steps.   Step 1: Complete the X-Y-Z Exercise Just answer three questions and blend the answers into a clear and concise statement. Caution: the questions are simple but they are not easy to answer. It will likely take you and your team about 60 to 90-minutes to complete this exercise with excellence. We do X (X equals the products and services your business provides to customers) For Y (Y equals the profile of your typical customer) So that they can Z (Z equals the result outcomes your customers receive from your products or services) Then place your X-Y-Z statement on your website above the fold – meaning – so the visitors to your website do not need to scroll in order to read it. Why above the fold? So your visitors will see it right away and they will know they are in the right place. When that happens, bounce rate goes down.   Step 2: Eliminate Visual Clutter The January-February 2013 issue of the Harvard Business Review reported the results of a study on consumer choice, which confirmed that providing more options did not increase choice. In fact, more options actually decreased choice. So instead of having 15 options on your website, i.e. photos, copy blocks, or calls-to-action, just have three easy-to-understand options and eliminate all the rest. Your customers see a multitude of options as visual clutter and that encourages bounce.   Step 3: Create Clear Calls-to-Action Dr. Flint McGlaughlin, director of Marketing Experiments once said to me, “Clarity always trumps persuasion.” So are you being clear with customers regarding the steps they need to take along the decision-making path? Have a clear and concise path to purchase. That’s all you need. Okay, Onward Nation – that was Money Draining Mistake #3…High Bounce Rate. Now, if you if you are hearing those voices in your head – if you are having thoughts that are even remotely similar to what I described at the beginning of this episode – don’t run -- let those thoughts be your litmus test – they are telling you that you are heading in the right direction. Push forward – don’t stop – don’t let your fear hold you back from breaking through to that next level. And remember, you are the average of the people you spend the most time with…and look who Stacey Alcorn from episode #3 is spending the most time with. She refers to herself as “A billionaire in the making.” And in order for that vision for her life to become a reality – she knows that she needs to spend as much time as possible with other billionaires. Well, I will let you in on a secret she told me during our interview – Stacey didn’t have those connections several years ago. But she DECIDED that was going to change and then she took action to make it happen. I hope that makes sense.     Okay, Onward Nation – I hope this solocast was valuable to you.  Andrea met many people who were, like her, starting a business later in life. She soon began to notice a startling trend. Although these baby boomer entrepreneurs had fabulous business ideas and years – decades even – of business experience and knowledge, they didn't know much about marketing. Even worse, marketing scared the pants off them. Too many of the same people were even more scared of social media. They weren't quite comfortable with technology and thought using social media was just too complicated. It was a case of people figuring you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Suddenly Andrea knew her true mission - to help these “old dogs” learn how to harness the power of social media so their amazing businesses would thrive. 2010 SOHO Business of the Year, Owen Sound Chamber of Commerce Communications Instructor,  Jana has been an Entrepreneur for 19 years in a variety of businesses including Owning/Operating a Restaurant, Real Estate, and a Distributor with SendOutCards. Hind sight says I should have kept a special book with a short story of each child! Fostering children led to adopting, first my oldest daughter and then more recently my second husband and I adopted a sibling group of 6 children, 5 still at home.
