Our guest for this episode is a Marine who served as a Military Working Dog Handler assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), Camp Pendleton, California. He enlisted in 2007, attended The Basic Handlers Course at Lackland AFB in 2008, and was assigned orders to Camp Pendleton. He was the first USMC MWD Handler to receive orders from Lackland to a newly developing MWD Platoon for the MEF. Navigating a new unit fresh out of K9 School, he was assigned to MWD Grief M107, a Patrol Explosive Detection Dog (PEDD), and together they trained in preparation for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. This was an exciting time in the history of the Marine Corps MWD Program because an entire platoon of dog handlers was explicitly created to support combat operations. This platoon was dedicated to training, equipping, and producing combat-ready canine teams for the rigors of deployments. In 2010, The 1st MEF MWD Platoon from Camp Pendleton deployed to Afghanistan and established a canine area on Camp Leatherneck, later known as Camp Donahue. This group of dog handlers experienced a very active Afghanistan and supported various units throughout the Helmand and Kandahar provinces. In this episode, we discuss his time in the Marine Corps, training for deployment, his deployment experiences, and his return from Afghanistan.  Surviving with Grief: Available Now https://a.co/d/8Ycd3CH Follow the Instagram and Facebook page @thedogsofwarpodcast www.thedogsofwarpodcast.com   In Canis Confiderus!   ------------------------------------ DISCLAIMER: The hosts and guests on this podcast share their personal experiences and do not represent the views of their affiliated organizations or the Department of Defense. ------------------------------------ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thedogsofwarpodcast/support

In this episode, you will hear about how Col. Don Taylor began his Air Force career as an architect and then progressed into a career in hospital administration. On 9/11, he worked for General Carlton in an office overlooking the Pentagon, and he describes watching the attack on the Pentagon. As a military healthcare administrator, he explains how he interacted as an advocate for the delivery of healthcare and balanced the need for resource utilization and delivering high-quality healthcare. Hear about the insights into hospital administration and the Tricare contract standards and development of standardization in healthcare and development of a healthcare plan and his briefings from the Pentagon to Congress in the Tricare for Life Program. He explains the role of the Medical Service Officer in supporting the various missions of Military Medicine and his leadership positions from Air Force hospital to combat theater trauma hospital.  He shares his insights and lessons learned as a Hospital Commander in the United States and Commander of a large, deployed Air Force Theatre Combat Hospital and medical evacuation hub located in Iraq.  He also describes how he prioritized patient needs and helped promote primary care patient teams and the development of the Primary Care Medical Home.  He details how he as a nonphysician, led physicians and helped synergize their efforts for optimal healthcare delivery. You will hear him describe how he navigated difficult circumstances with physicians and the situations that arose in the war zone, such as how to deliver care best when there are blood shortages. He also discusses how he handled these difficult situations and helped build rapport with those healthcare teammates. He also describes the training he encountered that most closely reflected combat casualty care.  As an advocate for physical, mental, and spiritual renewal, he describes the importance of personal care.  Interestingly, he explains how he had a high-profile casualty and managed the flow of communication to ensure respect for the casualty's privacy and family.  He describes how he positively engaged with the media to respect patient confidentiality and ensure family members received information before the media broadcast.  We also discussed how he thinks the military should focus on clinical training to optimize platforms for providing ready providers for casualty care. Hear about the challenges in military healthcare and recapturing patients due to the fierce competition in the healthcare industry.  He discusses the integration of the healthcare models and his thoughts on the balance between active duty and reserves healthcare providers and the limitations of pulling from the private sector for military care.  He is an expert in these areas as he received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington, TX. He earned his Master of Healthcare Administration from the Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA.  Don had a distinguished career in the Air Force and served as a primary advisor and consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General immediately before and following the attacks on 9/11.  He served as Commander of the Air Force Hospital at Luke AFB and was a pioneer in developing the concept of the primary care medical home.  He also was the first non-physician to Command a deployed Air Force Theater (Trauma) Hospital (Balad AB, Iraq). His final military assignment was at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB, TX, where he served as the Vice Wing Commander.   Following his distinguished military career, Col (Ret) Taylor has worked in the VA system and held several roles providing executive coaching, teaching, speaking, and consulting services to healthcare organizations.  He also led academic positions as an Adjunct Professor and Lecturer at the University of Texas in Dallas.  For those interested in healthcare leadership, he discusses his teaching and leadership programs and those available to senior physicians in and out of the military healthcare system.   Find out more and join Team WarDocs at www.wardocspodcast.com   Honoring the Legacy and Preserving the History of Military Medicine   The WarDocs Mission is to honor the legacy, preserve the oral history, and showcase career opportunities, unique expeditionary experiences, and achievements of Military Medicine. Our guest for this episode is a Marine Corps Veteran who served as a Military Working Dog (MWD) Handler and Trainer. He enlisted in 2000, and by the end of that year, he graduated from the MWD Basic Handler Course at Lackland AFB with orders to the Provost Marshal's Office (PMO) MWD Section, Camp Pendleton, California. This Marine experienced a pre-9/11 Marine Corps and quickly saw the mission of a Marine Corps MWD Handler change overnight. He deployed twice to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), where he left the stateside garrison mission and conducted combat operations with fellow handlers. This initial group of Marine MWD Handlers faced the reality of combat on short notice. They realized the importance of training for the fight and bringing back critical information from their experiences to prepare the following handlers for upcoming deployments. He was one of the first Marines to attend an advanced Canine Course at Von Liche Kennels (VLK). From 2001-2008 the Marines did their best to prepare all Handlers for upcoming deployments by identifying gaps in training and outsourcing to fill those gaps with advanced training courses and ultimately established the Marine Corps's MWD Team Deployment Training Course in Yuma, AZ. The increasing demand for Marine Corps MWD Teams led to the formation of an MWD Platoon under the Marine Expeditionary Forces (MEF). Toward the end of his Marine Corps career, he focused on developing his Marines for future operations. He transitioned into the civilian sector and continued to train Canine Teams as a contractor in Afghanistan, and to this day, he continues to work in the Canine Community. In this episode, we discuss his time in the Marine Corps, Dogs, Training, and exiting the Military into the civilian sector. If you would like to support this show, click the link below! He has served as a Handler, Trainer, Instructor, Specialized Search Dog (SSD) Handler, Kennel Master, Marine Security Guard Detachment Commander, and the Multi-Purpose Canine Program Manager. He started his career in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, at the Provost Marshal's Office (PMO) MWD section where he conducted multiple missions with his MWD. He continued his canine career at Lackland AFB as an MWD Trainer selecting, training, and certifying canines for the Department of Defense (DoD). In the rapidly changing MWD program, He became the first Marine instructor for a new advanced off-leash MWD capability, the Specialized Search Dog (or SSD). He trained handlers and SSDs to be successful canine teams for overseas deployments as an instructor. He attended an SSD course in Israel, training with an elite canine unit, and paired with SSD Lucca K458. After months of training, this new SSD team deployed twice to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. You can read about Lucca and her life in the book “Top Dog: The Story of Marine Hero Lucca” by Maria Goodavage. In 2010, he deployed beside 30 MWD teams to Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) while assigned to the Military Police Support Company's MWD Platoon under the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF). He later completed a tour as a Marine Security Guard (MSG) Detachment Commander, and he returned to the MWD field as the Kennel Master for I MEF's MWD Platoon. While assigned to the MWD Platoon, he deployed to Kuwait, establishing a forward-deployed Marine Kennel to provide various units with MWD support. He completed his career serving as the Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) Multi-Purpose Canine Program Manager, preparing canine teams for special operations worldwide. Throughout his 20-year career, he has gained a wealth of operational experience. With that experience, he mentored and trained numerous MWD teams for deployments overseas, all during a period of substantial growth and development within the MWD community. He continues to give back to the MWD community by currently serving as the President of the United States War Dogs Association. An association that exists to provide a lifetime of practical support to MWDs; their handlers and adopted families. Are you considering joining the military? Do you wonder what the process is like? My guest this week is at Basic Military Training right now and will be graduating very soon. But before she left for training she told me about her path to military life. It certainly wasn't easy for her to get to where she is today. My guest today in Mariah Hammond. Mariah is a military spouse. I had the opportunity to interview Mariah for my book, Women of the Military, when she was looking into joining the military. And I am excited to follow up with her as her journey to military life has not been easy. I wanted to talk about how much time it takes to join the military and some of the challenges people face while working to join the military. Can the words of a song have an impact on your life? Growing up Mariah remembers listening to Toby Keith sing about the Red White and Blue and it made her want to join the military. There were other factors that led her on the path she is on today, but she can always remember how it started with a song. She met her now husband in high school. They were really good friends and when she told him about looking into the military he decided to look into his own military career and joined the Air Force. Time went by and eventually they got married and she moved to Lackland AFB where the Air Force does Basic Military Training (BMT) and she was inspired again to join the military. When she went to meet with the recruiter, she ended up having a kidney stone. This immediately disqualified her from taking the military physical for a year. She took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and waited for time to pass so she could go to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) for her military medical physical. At MEPS another medical issue came up that required a waiver. It felt as if joining the military wouldn’t happen. And after a year of waiting to swear into the delayed entry program she felt like her dream of serving was falling apart. Months passed and finally her waiver was approved and she swore into the delayed entry program. Even though it took almost two years from when she first met with a recruiter to the point where she actually joined the Air Force, she said it was worth it. Hopefully I can do a follow up interview with Mariah next season to get caught up on what boot camp and tech school were like and what has happened since this interview took place. Mentioned in this episode: Women of the Military Book Are you considering joining the military? Check out my free guide: A Girls Guide to Military Life to help you prepare for the military.

What are the commonalities of veteran suicides? How should we, as survivors, react to suicide? What solutions are proving the most effective at combating the veteran suicide rate? Do mental health first aid techniques work? Has there been a change in the veteran suicide rate related to the publicity of this issue? Are suicides more related to transitioning out of the military and finding purpose than PTSD and bad memories/dreams? Are there direct or indirect connections between medications prescribed to veterans and suicide risk?
