Send us a textRoughly 1.25% of the Air Force hold the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. It's already a tough milestone to achieve. Tiffany Zaloudek is someone who did just that and made even more history recently by becoming the first female survival, evasion, resistance, escape (SERE) specialist to earn the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Air Force.SERE training is one of the most rigorous programs in the military, designed to prepare Airmen for survival in extreme conditions, evading capture, resisting interrogation, and escaping captivity.Although not the first female SERE specialist, when she earned her beret in 2007, she broke an eight-year dry spell in which no women had graduated from the specialized training course. Reflecting on her initial recruitment, she remembers her recruiter handing her a SERE brochure with no women in it.Her career is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and impact on SERE training and culture, inspiring countless Airmen. Tiffany now holds the highest enlisted rank, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of female service members in elite and challenging roles.Connect with Passing The Torch: Facebook and IG: @torchmartin More Amazing Stories: Episode 41: Lee Ellis – Freeing You From Bond That Make You InsecureEpisode 49: Ryan Hawk – Crafting a Legacy of LeadershipEpisode 52: Riley Tejcek – Mission of Empowerment and Endurance

More on Spencer Nelson: AW (AW), OTA (IUSS), EN (EOD) Nelson Spencer's Navy career was as unique as he was and not one that most sailors have the opportunity or fortitude to serve, not then (70s, 80s and 90s) and still not today (2023). He was afforded three (3) different platforms and ratings in his 20 year career. AW-Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Operator, reflecting a specialization that was clearly born out of Cold War needs to monitor the activities of Soviet submarines. He was stationed in Lajes, Azores where the maritime patrol aircraft crews would gather intelligence by detecting, tracking, classifying, and analyzing both surface and subsurface contacts. OTA-Ocean Systems Technician Analyst, same premise and mission as the AW in him, but he got to do it from land based duty stations, Naval Facilities. He served at NOPF on Ford Island, HI. In 1990, more than 1/2 way thru his career he challenged the EOD physical fitness requirement because he exceeded the maximum allowable age limit, by almost a decade!!!!!! He "sailed" through the requirements and finally found his passion and jov of his career, EOD. He served with Mobile Unit 3 in San Diego until his retirement 26 years ago, 4/30/1997. He deployed on numerous occasions to regions you are all well to knowing of but had the biggest joy.

CMSGT Morrell rode along on bomber missions over Europe during WWII as a combat cameraman. He was called upon several times to replace gunners after they had been killed, and was shot down three times during his service. – Doug Morrell joined the Army Air Corps two years before World War Two as a combat cameraman. He completed glider pilot training, and was sent to the University of Southern California for a year to study film and photography. Once the war started, Morrell accompanied crews on various missions all over Europe and Africa. It was his job to document the mission with film or photos so that the operation's execution could be evaluated afterwards. He almost exclusively flew on bomber missions, and was called upon several times to replace gunners after they had been killed. As a result, he was provided with gunner's wings despite never going to gunnery school. On one mission, Morrell's aircraft was shot down over the “Iron Gates” of Romania. As a navigator was bailing Morrell and a gunner out, he made a mistake that sent them miles away from where the rest of the crew landed. The two of them spent twenty-six days evading capture and walking across the mountains of modern day Kosovo and northern Albania. Eventually they reached the Adriatic Sea, where they paid a fisherman to take them to Italy where they could meet up with allied forces. Morrell was later shot down in Romania again, but this time he was captured by German forces. He was kept in a prison camp for four and a half months before being rescued by the Russians. After that, he was sent back to the States. These two incredible stories earned him the nickname “The Legend,” but his adventures were far from over. He was redeployed to Europe during the Cold War, spent five years in Panama documenting civic actions, and served in Korea and Vietnam. In Vietnam, Morrell would be shot down for a third and final time, where he shattered a bone in his ankle on landfall. He landed in hostile territory, and radioed for help. Nine hours and one firefight later, Morrell was air evaced to safety. You can learn more about this story here. After being shot down over enemy lines for the third time and escaping, Chief Master Sergeant Doug Morrell truly cemented himself as “The Legend. He was later awarded the Combat Camera Lifetime Achievement Award and the AIr Force Outstanding Civilian Career Service Award. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
