In this lighthearted, informal episode, we interviewed Eric Li and Evelyn Cai, two former Dawson students who have just finished their first year of college. Evelyn and Eric answered questions from our listeners about their first-year experiences, gave advice to seniors getting ready to start college, and offered words of wisdom for juniors applying for college now. This was our first episode in which we were not physically present with our interviewees, so it was a very new experience. Happy listening!
In this episode of Class Notes, Alexis Reyes interviews Vidya Muthupillai, Aditya Namjoshi, and Jessica Williams, the founders of a student-run organization called #IWillMask. In response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, their organization strives to fill the need for PPE by engaging Pearland community members in making masks for their own families, the VA Hospital, and the Houston Food Bank. In this episode of Class Notes, we interviewed writer Jenah Maravilla, the co-author of "Filipinos in Houston," which is the first history of Filipino immigrants in the Houston area. Jenah is also a leader in the Texas chapter of the Pilipino American Unity for Progress (UNIPRO). In the first half of the episode, Jenah discusses her identity as a Filipino-American, or as she describes it in one of her stories, living "between the dash of Filipino and American." In the second half of the episode, Jenah discusses the goals of her nonprofit organization, and how she has reclaimed her identity and culture through the work she does in the Filipino-American community.
