My guest this week is the three-time Tony award-winning Broadway orchestrator Doug Besterman, whose 31 Broadway musicals include The Producers, Fosse, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and his very first show, the 1991 revival of Damn Yankees, to name only a few. During this current Broadway season, Besterman will achieve something unheard of in his field: he will have three big musicals — Death Becomes Her, Boop!, and Smash — all running simultaneously on Broadway. Making it even more remarkable, two of those shows began previews on the same night and now open on Broadway in the same week. Besterman's film credits include the live-action version of Beauty and The Beast and Frozen. TV credits include the Marc Shaiman/Scott Witman compositions for Smash, ABC's version of Annie, The Sound of Music Live, and Peter Pan Live. As Tony Award-winning choreographer Susan Stroman's orchestrator of choice, his work has been heard on Little Dancer (co-orchestrator with Larry Hochman) at The 5th Avenue Theatre and the Kennedy Center and Crazy for You at Chichester Festival and on the West End. His most recent regional work was the World Premiere of Schmigadoon at the Kennedy Center and Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil at the Goodman Theatre. Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation! ROBERT GREENBLATT is one of television's most prolific executives and producers, with a career spanning broadcast television, cable, streaming, and the Broadway stage. As Chairman of WarnerMedia Entertainment until 2020, he ran HBO, TNT, and oversaw the launch of HBO Max which — as Max — now has over 100 million subscribers. As Chairman of NBC Entertainment from 2011 to 2018, he brought NBC back to #1 after a decade in last place with acclaimed series such as The Voice, the Chicago trilogy, This Is Us, The Blacklist, Smash, Superstore, and The Good Place. His passion for theatre resulted in reviving the lost art of live musicals on television and NBC became the proud home of The Sound of Music Live! (seen by 20 million people), Peter Pan Live!, The Wiz Live!, Hairspray Live!, the Emmy-winning Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert!, and Annie Live! (for which he was also executive producer). Greenblatt is a Peabody and Golden Globe-winning producer in television with credits that range broadly from The Gilded Age and Six Feet Under to The Hughleys, American Family, and Elvis. He is also a prolific Broadway producer and the recipient of four Tony Awards and two Oliviers. He is currently lead producer with Neil Meron and Steven Spielberg of the musical adaptation of Smash, which will debut on Broadway in April, 2025. Prior to NBC, Greenblatt was President of Showtime Networks from 2003 to 2010 engineering a significant renaissance of that cable network with a string of hits such as Weeds, Dexter, Shameless, Nurse Jackie, Californication, This American Life, and The Tudors. He began his career at Fox Broadcasting where he is responsible for indelible shows that included Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, The X-Files, Party of Five, Ally McBeal, King of the Hill, and The Sopranos, a pilot he developed that eventually found its way to HBO. This is the 71st episode of AIR, an interview podcast series with a different theme each episode. AIR is actually on hiatus from recording new episodes, and set to return in the new year 2025… However, this month and last month's episodes are actually recordings of two interviews produced in collaboration with @DimensionsFestival. Both took place on site with a small audience, and it was really special to be participating in the festival via these intimate artist talks. For the second instalment, I'm speaking with @Unai-Trotti and Sabri, co-founders of the iconic label and event series @Cartulisday. Instead of our usual focus on one topic, these on-site interviews act as artist profiles, exploring creativity and craft, and delving into the label's history and milestones including their upcoming 15th anniversary which they're celebrating at the legendary FOLD venue in London on 23 November 2024. Hope you guys enjoy this recording, and thanks again so much to Pat and Hamish at Dimensions for the invite. ++ Music: "Horton" - Unai Trotti (2020) "Where Has Love Gone" - Reade Truth (2018) "Tracid" - Zap (2020) "Twilight Expanse" - Ebeats (2023) FOLLOW AIR Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: airpodcast.substack.com/

Welcome to Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home with Beth Kushnick! A favorite part of doing this podcast is the chance to sit down with not only long time friends and colleagues, but longtime friends and colleagues who are the best at what they do. And this week, we have a great one. On this week's episode, Beth and Producer Mike sit down with Kevin Rupnik, an Emmy-nominated Art Director who has been working in theater, television and film for 30 plus years, at the highest levels. The Interview with Kevin begins at Time Code: 16:12 GUEST BIO: KEVIN RUPNIK With formal training and experience in theater, opera, television and film, I bring an unusually holistic approach to brand communication and event marketing. As an Art Director I have designed for The Good Wife, Royal Pains, How to Make it in America, The Sound of Music Live and Masters of Sex, for which I was honored to be nominated for an Emmy in 2014. Things to know about me: I am an experienced leader with a wicked sense of humor and the belief that work should be fun as well as productive. Being curious is the trait I'm the most proud of. I believe in the transformative power of design. I live in New York but love the tropics and the desert. My dad was a tool-and-die maker and my mother was a beautician. I believe that the key to successful working relationships is mutual respect. I believe in the POWER of events to shape opinion, inform brand communication, and inspire devotion. (This conversation was originally broadcast on November 14, 2023.) Today on this encore edition of Midday on Music, Tom is delighted to welcome the Ndlovu Youth Choir to the Performance Studio at our sibling station WTMD, in Towson. This talented singing group from South Africa — the troupe with us today is comprised of seven young men and six young women — has become one of the world's most popular and inspirational musical ensembles since it was formed in 2009. The creative outgrowth of an after-school program for orphaned and vulnerable children in Limpopo, South Africa, Ndlovu is now a youth portal to a career in music. Membership in the choir also instills values of togetherness, a work ethic and a sense of social responsibility, and promotes self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership. Once you leave the review, email me at bqhsarahwebb@gmail.com and let me know which review is yours, and make sure to include a way to contact you (I will never share your information with anyone else). 3. I do them via Zoom.
Today on Midday, host Tom Hall is delighted to welcome the Ndlovu Youth Choir to the Performance Space at our sister station WTMD, in Towson, Maryland. The Ndlovu Youth Choir's extraordinary appearances four years ago on the popular TV show America's Got Talent made them the first choir in the history of that show to reach the finals. Their soulful sets won them millions of new fans around the world. On the strength of those AGT performances, they signed a recording contract with SYCO and Sony Music, and their first album debuted at number one on iTunes... Since then, the choir has completed two European tours, sold out every public concert and performed on numerous local and international television and radio shows. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the choir's musical public service messages for the UN's World Health Organization offered hope and inspiration. They also joined many of the world's top musical performers on a digital stage during Global Citizens' "One World: Together at Home" virtual concert. Along with its founder and musical director Ralf Schmitt, the group is currently in the middle of a month-long Eastern US concert tour, and during today's stop in Baltimore, they'll also be singing up a storm at 7:30 tonight at the Keystone Korner Jazz Club at 1350 Lancaster Street. You can check out the link for ticketing info. But we're happy to have the Ndlovu Youth Choir to sing for us right now, and for the next hour... Check out WYPR's Instagram page for great video clips of this performance!Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

THE BIG INTERVIEW - Tyrese Talks Fast and Furious 10, Paul Walker, Tupac, and Performs His Music Live!
Sophia is a talented and multifaceted actress currently creeping up the stage as Marlow in the hit Broadway show, “Grey House”. She talks about her role as Marlow, the complexities of her character, and her deep appreciation for the creative freedom provided by the playwright, Levi Holloway, the open-ended nature of the play being open to interpretation. With her innate ability to tap into the dark side partnered with her empathic nature, it's no surprise that she's able to perform and connect to both her character and the audience. She shares how she embraces curiosity as a driving force and how this allows her to explore different emotions, and the importance of balance between her personal life and maintaining a healthy separation from the characters she plays. She also delves into generational differences and why she's a fan of Gen Zs despite the bad rap they get. Apart from acting, she unveils her love for painting which she considers as a meditative practice that keeps her aligned. Despite the chaos the industry brings sometimes, curiosity has been a driving force for Sophia, and this curiosity is what keeps her going. Sophia Anne Caruso is a talented actress with tv and film credits such as the Netflix hit feature, “The School for Good and Evil”, "37", "Jack of the Red Hearts", "I Am Number Four", CBS' “Evil”, and the NBC's hit series “Smash” among others. Her stage credits include "Beetlejuice", "Lazarus", "Runaways", "Blackbird", "The Nether", and "The Sound of Music Live!". She's currently playing as Marlow in the hit Broadway show, “Grey House”.
