Between The Covers : Conversations with Writers in Fiction, Nonfiction & Poetry
Today’s archival episode with Richard Powers, about The Overstory, was recorded in 2019 in the studios of KBOO community radio in Portland, Oregon. Unusually, that same night I appeared with Richard at a live ticketed event at Revolution Hall to discuss the same book. Beyond the differences between an intimate one-on-one in-studio conversation (which today’s episode is), and a public-facing live event, where the presence of the audience is palpable and becomes part of the collective rapport we establish, I also developed two discrete lines of inquiry for each conversation respectively. So if you haven’t heard the live conversation (aired in 2023), I highly recommend it as well. Barbara Kingsolver for the New York Times Book Review declares The Overstory—winner of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction—a book that accomplishes “what few living writers from either camp, art or science, could attempt. Using the tools of story, he pulls readers heart-first into a perspective so much longer-lived and more subtly developed than the human purview that we gain glimpses of a vast, primordial sensibility.” What does it mean to de-center humans in a story written for a human readership? We explore that together today. For the bonus audio archive Richard discusses a collaborative tree cantata between musicans and writers, where writers pick their favorite text about trees and the musicians compose music to accompany it. Richard then reads his selection for the project, “Native Trees” by W.S. Merwin. This joins an ever-growing archive of material contributed by past guests, whether Forrest Gander reading poems in collaboration with a lichen scientist or Jorie Graham reading poems about rain by others; whether writing exercises by Lucy Ives, Lily Dunn or Will Alexander, or craft talks by Jeannie Vanasco and Marlon James. On a Sunday night in February 2026, 18-year-old Megan Trussell left her dorm room on the campus of CU Boulder after having a fight with her roommate. She walked through the campus alone, with temperatures reaching almost 20 degrees fahrenheit. Then, she vanished. Six days later, Megan's body was found in a culvert about three miles away from her dorm room. Investigators quickly ruled her death a suicide from an overdose of amphetamine. Since the ruling, Megan's family has continued to fight for justice, bringing attention to the many inconsistencies and gaps in the investigation. They hope that with increased attention, the outrage will spread, and law enforcement will have no choice but to address the countless questions that still linger, and provide both Megan and her family with real answers. This is her story. The Hansens were a typical all-American family. Close-knit, well-liked, and quietly going about life while running a family business in a small California mountain town. Hans and Betty Hansen kept the business going while their twin daughters, Jill and Julie, attended high school. And then a bizarre and unspeakably tragic crime occurred in the dead of night and rocked the community where it unfolded. A house engulfed in flames, shotgun blasts amid the panic, and the lives of two twin girls lost forever. This is their story. If you or someone you know has an information about this crime, reach out to the Humboldt Sheriff's Office at 707-268-2539. In July of 2017, 24-year-old Brianna Vibert, a bright, bubbly, mother of four, left a gas station on foot around 3AM in the town of Flint, Michigan. She hasn't been seen since. There have been no confirmed sightings or solid leads indicating what might have happened to Brianna after she walked out of view of surveillance cameras. Investigators are left with footage from a Mobil gas station showing the young woman stumbling around the store, looking panicked, frightened, and bleeding from her arm. Brianna's family has remained confident in their belief that she wouldn't have left on her own, and especially wouldn't leave her four children behind without a mother and without answers. Brianna Vibert remains missing and is currently classified as endangered missing. At the time of her disappearance, she was 24 years old, at a height of 5'9 and weighing 120 pounds. At the time of this airing, Brianna would be about 33 years old. She was last seen leaving the Mobil gas station on foot on South Saginaw Street in Flint, Michigan. She was wearing a plain, cream-colored shirt with three quarter length sleeves and a scoop neck, a light blue camisole, black leggings, and flip flops. Brianna has brown eyes and natural brown hair, but it was dyed red at the time of her disappearance. Brianna has several tattoos, including the word ‘family' on the upper right side of her back surrounded by the words ‘strength, pride, loyalty, honor, love', a Mad Hatter on the front of her right shoulder, the name ‘Savannah' on one wrist, ‘Maddox' on the other wrist, and a skeleton key on her right foot. Her ears and nose are pierced. If you have any information about the disappearance or current whereabouts of Brianna Jayde Vibert, or any of the women mentioned in this episode, no matter how insignificant it might seem, please contact the Flint Township Police Department at 810-600-3250. Between The Covers : Conversations with Writers in Fiction, Nonfiction & Poetry
Today’s classic episode from the archives with Zadie Smith was recorded in 2019 at the studios of KBOO community radio to discuss her story collection Grand Union. The conversation ranges wildly—from the politics of representation, of being “free to imagine,” to the freedoms we’ve surrendered to surveillance capitalism. It ranges widely because her collection is, in the words of the San Francisco Chronicle an “unusual creature…Between the covers of one book, readers will find such disparate forms as allegory, parable, speculative thriller and satire, as well as shorter incarnations of Smith's characteristic social comedy . . . Smith's voracious intellect is on full display.” If you enjoy today’s conversation consider joining the Between the Covers community as a listener-supporter. In August of 2022, 24-year-old Andi Wagner left an acquaintance's home in Newburgh, Indiana in the middle of the night and seemingly disappeared into thin air. Andi was struggling with drug addiction, and like many addicts who go missing, her story quickly lost traction and grew cold. Her family has done everything they can to keep her name and memory alive while they exhaust every avenue in hopes of finding her. Regardless of what Andi's life looked like, she is a daughter, a big sister, and a cousin, who deserves justice. When Andi disappeared, she was 5'4 and about 125 lbs. She is a white female with brown hair and brown eyes. She may also be using the last name 'Blair.' Andi has several tattoos, including a dream catcher and rose on her left forearm with the name "Elane Dora," the name "Joshua Wayne Brown" in black script on her left forearm over several Roman numerals in red script, a small rocket on her left ankle, and multiple on her fingers. At the time of this episode, Andi would be 27 years old. If you have any information about the disappearance of Andi Wagner, please contact the Evansville Police Department at (812) 436-7896. Between The Covers : Conversations with Writers in Fiction, Nonfiction & Poetry
Excited to share this classic episode from the archives with one of the great short storytellers of our time, Ted Chiang. This conversation happened in 2019 at the studios of KBOO community radio in Portland, Oregon. Blake Crouch speaking of Exhalation, the book we discuss today, says “Ted Chiang has no contemporary peers when it comes to the short story form. His name deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Carver, Poe, Borges, and Kafka. Every story is a universe. Every story is a diamond. You will inhale Exhalation in a single, stunned sitting, because true genius doesn't come along nearly as often as advertised. This is the real thing.” For the bonus audio archive Ted contributed a reading of his essay “Silicon Valley Is Turning into its Own Worst Fear,” first published at Buzzfeed, an essay exploring the reasons why Silicon Valley might particularly fear superintelligent A.I. and how credible those fears really are. This joins contributions from everyone from N.K. Jemisin to Daniel Jose Older to Vajra Chandrasekera. Original Air Date: 8/13/2025 Every year, between one in every 1,000 to 2,000 babies is born deaf or hard of hearing. For about 90% of these children, they're born into hearing families, families who suddenly begin a journey they never expected. Maxine and Raymond Raffle were one such family. Their daughter, Lonene “Lonnie” was diagnosed as deaf at 18 months old. From that moment forward, they walked beside her as she carved out a life that defied limitation. Lonnie embraced everything, community, friendship, love, motherhood. Her world expanded, even as society tried to shrink it. Her husband was also deaf. Their children, however, were hearing; what's known as CODAs: Children of Deaf Adults. For Lonnie's daughter, Alison, that meant stepping into the role of translator, advocate, and bridge between two worlds, sometimes before she was old enough to truly understand what that meant. Then, when Alison was just five years old, Lonnie disappeared. Alison has made it her mission to share her mother's story. On this show, we always strive to include the voices of those closest to the story. But we also understand the emotional weight that comes with retelling deep personal trauma. When we spoke with Alison, she chose not to be interviewed for this episode, and we fully respect that. Instead, with her permission, we've drawn from the interviews she's previously given, as well as publicly available records and reporting. Alison graciously reviewed the research for accuracy, and gave us her blessing to move forward. What you'll hear today is shared with her care, her trust, and her enduring hope for justice. This is Lonnie's story, and the story of the daughter she was taken from 43 years ago. In March of 2018, 31-year-old Jennifer Myers was pronounced deceased by EMS at the home of a stranger, from what was later ruled a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Her family may never have the answers they so desperately want, but there's multiple loose ends that show that the investigation into Jen's death fell short. Will Jen's case remain closed with a rushed ruling of suicide, or will detectives finally hear the family's pleas for a reopening of the case and give them the answers they deserve? If you have any information about the death of Jennifer Myers in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, please contact the Wheat Ridge Police Department or Jen's family at the Justice for JEN Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Justice4JEN/ Listen Ad Free And Get Access to Exclusive Journal Entries Episodes: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4HEzJSwElA7MkbYYie9Jin Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/themurderdiariespod Apple: Hit subscribe/ 1 week free trail available Sponsorship Links: Sign up for a one-dollar-per-month trial period and take your retail business to the next level today! https://shopify.com/murderdiaries Resources: https://themurderdiariespodcast.com/episodes Music Used: Walking with the Dead by Maia Wynne Link: https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Maiah_Wynne/Live_at_KBOO_for_A_Popcalypse_11012017 License: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ Glitter Blast by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://filmmusic.io/song/4707-glitter-blast License: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license Our Links: Link Hub: https://msha.ke/themurderdiaries Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themurderdiariespod/ Edited by: https://www.landispodcastediting.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Two longtime friends. Meeting for a heart-to-heart talk on a bench in a busy park outside Cleveland, Ohio. Ten minutes after arriving, their bodies were found. Shot to death in cold blood. In broad daylight. Six years later, the double homicides remain one of Northeast Ohio's most perplexing cold cases. No motive. No eyewitnesses. No suspects. Just two families shattered, left with far more questions than answers. This is the story of Carnell Sledge and Kate Brown. A home invasion. A senseless murder. Both events happened in homes right next door to one another on the same morning and left a loving father shot to death in the living room of his home.
