Limited near-term catalysts for market upside The US Equity Strategy team recently raised its S&P 500 target but the target implies little to no upside between now and year-end as the team sees few positive catalysts over the next several quarters. Fiscal impulse from the One Big Beautiful Bill will be positive but lower than originally expected. The US Economics team expects the new fiscal plan to add between 0.3% and 0.4% to GDP growth in 2026 and to fade thereafter as benefits are front-loaded. US Economics does expect an important change next year as the Fed should start cutting rates and US Strategy discusses how this could boost certain areas of the market. But before discounting 2026 cuts, stocks may have to contend with a pricing out of 2025 cuts-US Economics doesn't expect rate reductions to start until the back half of next year. Jill and Aditya discuss tariffs, the resiliency of large corporates in particular and how tariff strategies could be impacted if higher costs begin to noticeably impact prices. Where did it all go wrong? After an unexpected win at Edgbaston, where Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Shubman Gill and the rest of the Team India showed they've got the heart of a star to level the series at 1-1, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul forgot the importance of being idle and promptly handed England the opening they needed to get ahead at Lords. England did not let that opportunity slide away, and here we are, with India 2-1 down despite having been the better side for most of the first three Tests. One win, one loss in the past two Tests to review since the last episodes. Siddhant and Aditya aren't looking back in anger, however, because the way India have played, there might just be enough to keep the dream alive of a series win.

This week on Diverse Thinking Different Learning, we welcome Dr. Aditya Nagrath. Dr. Nagrath is the founder of Elephant Learning Mathematics Academy and helps students overcome math anxiety, rapidly advancing their skills with just ten minutes of practice a few times a week. He holds a PhD in Mathematics and Computer Sciences and has over three decades of experience as a software engineer, entrepreneur, author, and speaker, working on a wide range of projects from atomic clocks to mobile apps. Dr. Nagrath joins us for this episode to discuss mathematics anxiety - where it comes from, how it's misunderstood, how to address it and more. A child's early struggles with math are not always just academic but are also emotional and potentially even life-changing. Dr. Nagrath draws from his rich background in math, computer science, and education to help us break down why so many students begin falling behind in math as early as kindergarten and how early delays often snowball into years of lost confidence, missed opportunities, and career shifts away from math-intensive fields. This isn't just about numbers or curriculum, however. As Dr. Nagrath explains, math anxiety is often rooted in beliefs such as “I'm not a math person” - beliefs that can trigger lifelong avoidance and reinforce themselves with every uncomfortable encounter with numbers. This is truly a vicious circle that hinders growth and learning well into adulthood. The conversation challenges the common misconception that disliking math is harmless. How early numeracy can actually influence language development, how adult comments can unconsciously pass limiting beliefs to children, and why literacy-focused initiatives may be unintentionally crowding out math readiness. Dr. Nagrath also tells us about Elephant Learning, a tech-based platform that adapts to each student's comprehension level and uses gamified learning to rebuild mathematical confidence from the ground up. This episode serves as a reminder that math isn't just a subject but a gateway and that what we do (or, for that matter, don't do) in the earliest years can shape far more than just test scores. Show Notes: [2:22] - Dr. Aditya Nagrath explains how working with Elephant Learning revealed that minor complaints often mask deeper math anxiety. [5:05] - The belief that "I'm not a math person" stalls effort and future academic/career opportunities. [7:09] - Similar to AI training, learning depends on the meanings that we assign to experiences and challenges. [9:53] - Hear how Dr. Nagrath defines mathematics anxiety. [12:11] - Dr. Nagrath argues that many students' unresolved early math gaps snowball, derailing STEM careers and impacting the economy. [15:48] - Dr. Nagrath also asserts that Algebra is essential because it introduces written mathematics that are needed for interpreting the modern world. [17:40] - Hear how preschool math practice improves children's future reading, writing, and speaking abilities. [19:41] - Dr. Nagrath uses a basketball analogy to demonstrate that practicing math is essential because no alternative "game" exists. [21:46] - Dr. Nagrath explains that Elephant Learning builds math skills by meeting students at their comprehension level with gamified learning. [24:01] - By mapping standards to age levels, Elephant Learning helps students visualize progress. [27:18] - Because of deeply rooted self-doubt, overcoming math anxiety later in life tends to be more difficult. [28:44] - Dr. Nagrath stresses that problem-solving, like basketball, improves with practice rather than innate intelligence. [31:00] - Modern demands require deeper, language-like mathematical understanding. Think your challenges are holding you back from triathlon? Meet Aditya Mehta from Mumbai, India, a 35 year old endurance athlete who was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 4. Despite being told that swimming was too dangerous a risk for him with seizures, he learned how to swim freestyle at 32 years old. He has since gone on to complete triathlons worldwide. His story isn't just inspiring – it's a masterclass in turning limitations into stepping stones for success. And it all started with watching a half marathon in Mumbai. From Spectator to Game-Changer In 2015, Aditya stood on the sidelines of the Standard Chartered half marathon, not knowing that moment would transform his life. With zero running experience and epilepsy as his constant companion, Aditya has since completed multiple 10Ks, marathons, and even a 50k ultra. But he wasn't done yet. Breaking Through the "Impossible" In 2019, Aditya added cycling to his repertoire and, despite being told that swimming was too dangerous a risk for him with seizures, he quite literally took the plunge and learned to swim freestyle in 2022 at 32 years old, adding the final piece to his triathlon puzzle. For Aditya, this wasn't just about completing a race – it was about seeing how far he could challenge his body and shattering preconceptions about what is possible with epilepsy. The Nutrition Game-Changer With the support of his family, swimming coach and doctors, Aditya continued to train but knew he needed a nutrition strategy as unique as his situation. Joining the Triathlon Nutrition Academy has given him the personalised approach to help him fuel his ambitious goals. No more guesswork, no more generic plans – just precise, targeted fuelling strategies that support both his epilepsy and his performance goals. The result? He's now preparing for a Half Ironman in Estonia with a sub-six-hour target in his sights. Beyond Personal Victory Aditya isn't just changing the game for himself – he's reshaping how the world views athletes with epilepsy. Through citywide events and advocacy, he's building a community that turns "you can't" into "watch me." His message is clear: with the right support and strategy, your supposed limitations can become your greatest strengths. If you have challenges that you think are too big, Aditya reminds us that limitations are only set in our minds. Once you let them go, anything is possible. Send us a textTake everything you thought you knew about how markets work and prepare for a fundamental rethinking. When NVIDIA's stock price skyrockets after negative news, or the Federal Reserve successfully manipulates interest rates through bond purchases, classical economic theories struggle to explain what we're witnessing in real time.Professor Aditya Chaudhry from Ohio State University joins us to explore the revolutionary concept of "demand-based asset pricing" - a framework that's challenging decades of financial orthodoxy. Traditional models suggest that when investors irrationally pile into a stock, deep-pocketed arbitrageurs should quickly step in to correct any mispricing. But what if there simply isn't enough arbitrage capital available to enforce rational pricing, especially at the macro level? We dive into groundbreaking research showing that shifts in investor demand might impact security prices up to 100 times more than classical theories predict. This "inelastic markets hypothesis" helps explain everything from market booms and busts to why quantitative easing actually works. The implications extend from central bank policy to government debt issuance, potentially reshaping how we interpret market movements. The conversation bridges complex financial theory with practical examples, making sophisticated concepts accessible without sacrificing depth. Whether you're trying to understand the current bull market, puzzling over Federal Reserve decisions, or simply seeking to make smarter investment choices, this episode provides crucial context for navigating today's financial landscape. While uncertainty remains a fundamental feature of markets, the one clear takeaway reinforces timeless wisdom: for most individual investors, passive products remain the most reliable strategy rather than attempting to outguess the market's complex demand dynamics.Show Notes:Supply and DemandGaigax & Koijen, Inelastic Markets Hypothesis (2023)Chaudhry & Li, Endogenous Elasticities (forthcoming)Thanks for listening! In this guest episode we chat to Aditya Jain, a Harvard medical school student who authored an article highlighting the growing trend of medical professionals choosing non-clinical careers, many because they desire to pursue Purpose and Impact. He raised the fact that historically, there has been a lot of shame around wanting to leave a career in clinical practice, but increasingly there is acknowledgement that when health professionals choose non-clinical paths that better align with their personal interests, that this is not a loss to healthcare, but actually represents a win for all stakeholders, particularly if these non-clinical careers serve healthcare in other ways. This episode will inspire you to take authentic action to align your career with a path that better serves you. The International Film Festival of Rotterdam, which ran from January 30 through February 9 this year, is a festival with a uniquely wide-ranging and eclectic program of new and repertory films; narrative, documentary, and experimental work; and installations, performances, and expanded cinema. One of the highlights of this year's festival was a special focus section called Through Cinema We Shall Rise! The event marked the 70th anniversary of the historic Bandung Conference of 1955, where 29 Asian and African countries gathered in Indonesia to announce the birth of a new anti-colonialist “Third World.” The conference inspired the creation of the Afro-Asian Film Festival, which took place in Tashkent in 1958, Cairo in 1960, and Jakarta in 1964. The program at Rotterdam features 15 titles selected from those three editions, spanning films from China, Tibet, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Ghana, and more. Today's episode delves into these films and the context from which they emerged. For the first half, Film Comment Editor Devika Girish sits down with two Indonesian curators and artists, Bunga Siagian and Yuki Aditya, to sketch out the history of the Bandung Conference and the three Afro-Asian Film Festivals. In the second half, critics and programmers Cici Peng and Inney Prakash join the group to discuss the films shown at Rotterdam—their aesthetics, politics, and relevance to the present. Films discussed: Turang (Bachtiar Siagian, 1958), Freedom for Ghana (Sean Graham, 1957), Law of Baseness (Aleksandr Medvedkin, 1962), A Phu and His Wife (Loc Mai, 1960), The Open Door (1963), The Red Detachment of Women (Xie Jin, 1961), Serfs (Li Jun, 1965), Five Golden Flowers (Wang Jiayi, 1959)
