A podcast about books, hosted by Brisbane comedian Joel Batham. Each fortnight, a guest brings in a book for Joel to read, and them both to discuss. The name is fine! Stop complaining! God! Sometimes there are insightful observations and criticisms of the books, but it's also pretty dumb?
See the description of the previous episode for my explanation of why this is structured the way it is. It's a deliberate stylistic choice. Every aspect of this podcast is a result of a very considered approach. If you think something is bad then clearly you didn't understand what I was going for and you should feel bad about yourself, to be quite honest. Erin does good art! Buy it! Erin does good art! Buy it! I screwed up the recording at the start of this episode and was too embarrassed to mention it, but I think the start suits the tone of the show anyway, so I left it. I also stopped recording halfway through by accident and restarted it, but I have decided to put each half out separately, again, as a stylistic choice. The fact that it is 3:35am as I write this description is irrelevant. I have also decided to change the format and release schedule, because I have assignments to do and I have already done twenty-one of these. I doubt anybody has listened to all twenty-one. The point of doing them that frequently was building up a back catalogue. I am capable of smashing out assignments very quickly but I'm in third year and it's probably more obvious than it was. I wrote a short story about the Walter Taylor Bridge in six or seven hours the other week but afterwards I kept having better ideas. You can read it if you want, I might submit it to the QLD Young Writers Award after heavy revisions. Erin's Twitter Erin's Facebook Erin's Instagram Joel's Twitter Joel's Facebook Joel's Instagram
20! Taylor Edwards is my guest, she is funny on here and also in all the other things she's doing. She & Chris Martin will soon be launching a podcast called Binge Minute, so look out for that. Taylor's Facebook Taylor's Instagram Joel's Twitter Joel's Facebook Joel's Instagram

This one was recorded a little closer to the release date than the last few. There are microwave and dish noises in the background of the call but it's all part of the charm. I think I forgot to actually introduce the show, but if you go listen to another episode you can hear what the introduction is meant to be. Josh does comedy, and music with Joy in Motion. This one was recorded before episode 12 with Mickey Flykick but I screwed up the order. It doesn't matter really. Nobody would even realise if I hadn't said here. Josh's Instagram Joel's Twitter Joel's Facebook Joel's Instagram
Jack Marsho does a podcast called Beer Shark, and you can find his music under the name Brightwater. Machocast on Facebook Jack's Instagram Jack's Twitter Joel's Twitter Joel's Facebook Joel's Instagram
Mickey Flykick co-hosts a podcast called Ain't It Rich, which delves into the insane things rich people do. On this episode of Stir-Crazy, we talk about some of the political aspects of this, including the council elections. Also if any of my relatives listen to this I have never keyed a car nor do I currently have any intention of doing so. This is the first episode of Stir-Crazy, a limited series (depending how long all this goes for) of podcasts where I, Joel Batham, check in on my friends who are limiting their interactions with the outside world to some extent. This one is with Jack Gramenz. I don't introduce the guest at the start of most of these, but the names are in the title, it's not that hard! The podcast is lucky to have Ryan Sim back as the first return guest, this time discussing Bret Easton Ellis' Glamorama, a satire on celebrity culture and all that sort of thing. This episode is a solo thing, where I run through some takes on what I've read since last fortnight. I then read out a story. Dan Dennis comes in to talk about British journalist Johann Hari's Lost Connections, a non-fiction book that is subtitled "Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression - and the Unexpected Solutions", which sounds pretty ambitious. We discuss what Hari has identified as the broader problems, and his proposed solutions, as well as the stylistic choices in the writing, which are certainly choices, I'll give him that. Dan has a show called "Me (1995 -2019)" at this year's Bris Funny Fest, on the 12th and 13th of August at Heya Bar. Tickets here, more details on his Facebook. This fortnight's Cook Blub is about the first book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Michelle Azevedo joins us to talk about the book's relationship to the original radio plays, just how joke-dense this book is, the ~themes~, as well as what we can take away ~as readers~. We talk about dumb bullshit as well, but we strike a good balance, I think. Dan Dennis is on next fortnight to talk about Lost Connections by Johann Hari, which is a book about depression, but the episode is still fun, I promise. That's available from the BCC library as both a book and an ebook. Michelle's Twitter Michelle's Facebook Joel's Twitter Joel's Facebook Ryan Sim made the logo! Thank you Ryan! Alright, look, we're talking about Lolita, it's dicey stuff, but it's fine! It's a good book! The point is that the narrator is insanely cooked! Sam Bowden and I talk about all that and more, including Jeffrey Epstein, even though this podcast was recorded months ago. Weird timing. Next fortnight's book is Douglas Adams' sci-fi satire the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and my guest is Michelle Azevedo. Again, you'd be able to find that at the library or wherever. This fortnight, Bridget Hassed comes in to talk about John Birmingham's Australian share-house memoir, He Died with a Felafel in his Hand, as well as our own accommodation experiences and, for some reason, stories about fucked animals we've seen. On the next episode, Sam Bowden joins the show to discuss Vladimir Nabokov's controversial classic novel, Lolita. There's a lot going on with that book. It's available at libraries and most book shops and everything. My ex gave me her copy because she had no intention of ever reading it and was gonna give it to St Vinnie's otherwise. My point is that it's easy to find. Bridget's Twitter Joel's Twitter Joel's Facebook Ryan Sim made the logo! Thank you Ryan! Pay him to design something for you. In the second episode of Cook Blub, Brisbane writer, comedian, and musician Ryan Sim brings in Tenth of December, a short story collection by George Saunders. We touch on each of the stories, as well as some of the issues they raise. Ryan brought his dog over, and so our dogs are barking in the background for a fair bit of this. This is the first episode of Cook Blub, a podcast about books, hosted by Joel Batham, a Brisbane comedian who can both read AND write. This episode features fellow Brisbane comedian Jack Gramenz, executive producer of The Lucas Warmtake Half Hour. We begin with our recent reading histories, and Rick Morton's One Hundred Years of Dirt is discussed in some detail. Our main book this week is Get Poor Slow by David Free, his debut crime novel. You can find The Lucas Warmtake Half Hour through Jack's social media accounts, or just search on your podcast app, it's a distinctive name. On our next episode my guest, Ryan Sim, and I discuss George Saunders' story collection, Tenth of December. It's most likely available at your library. Episodes are fortnightly.
