Wiz RECOMMENDS Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Mad Max: Fury Road took the film world by storm with it's amazing visuals and mind-bending stunts. It's an action film that, to this day, seems to hold a special place in action film fans hearts. And I agreed: the stunt work, visuals and it's breakneck pace in action gave it a breathless, if not mindless, adrenaline rush. Furiosa: A Mad Max Tale has a lot of the same strengths: the stunt work is expertly done and the visuals share the same tableau as it's predecessor. But Furiosa does a few things differently that end up being to its detriment. The beauty of Fury Road was the lack of time to even catch a breath. The action sequences and set pieces keep coming and coming as the film started to when it's finished only take minutes here and there for some exposition. Furiosa is much slower in comparison: as a prequel, it tells the story of a young Furiosa and how she ended up where she was in Mad Max: Fury Road. But as cool as Furiosa was in Fury Road, you knew barely anything about her. She was much more of a vibe or a template that Charlize Theron embodied more than played. The problem is the depth given to Furiosa was meager at best. And for a movie that is 2 hours and 30 minutes long, that becomes a major problem when she eventually gains her comeuppance. In fact, the character herself, whether played by Alyla Browne as a young girl or Anya Taylor-Joy as an older Furiosa, the character doesn't speak much at all until the third act. Wouldn't the purpose of a prequel focused solely on a single character have you get to know this character better? Apparently not this movie. The most you know is how she got captured and how she eventually started working for Immortan Joe. That's it. In fact, you don't really get to know any character all that well. One of the fascinating things about Fury Road was the characters were so delightfully weird and the world inhabited was so fascinating based solely on it's visuals that it became a disappointment when you would learn not much at all. And honestly, Furiosa doesn't have that feel of "holy hell what am I looking at?!" because a lot of the set pieces and characters were introduced in Fury Road. But I will recommend Furiosa. One reason is, of course, the visuals and action set pieces are amazing to watch. When the action set pieces set on rigs get going, you are instantly transported to what made the last movie so memorable. All of the stunts and action are so believably well done and are exciting to watch. Just not as exciting as it was in Fury Road. There is one thing that I think Furiosa does better than Fury Road and that's the main antagonist. Immortan Joe was incredibly weird in Fury Road, but only in the "yo what am I looking at?" sort of way. Dr. Dementus is both darkly hilarious and charismatic. Played in an incredibly showy turn by Chris Hemsworth, the character gets to show a different side of Hemsworth repertoire that is not only comedically rich but also dark. It's a side that we don't get to see in the chiseled actor since he is more known as Thor or in other action films, but it was a delightful surprise to see him chew scenery. The short of it is this: Furiosa is a lesser Fury Road in a number of ways. With the exception of the villain, all of the aspects of the film aren't as dynamic or as entertaining as they were in the last film. That said, if you want more Fury Road, Furiosa will tide you over nicely enough. Just don't expect to be blown over like you may have been in Fury Road.

We could not resist covering this film in honor of the recent release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, available to watch in theaters now. Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, is from The Green Place, a lesbian mecca inhabited entirely by women known as the Vuvalini. She wants nothing more than to escape Immortan Joe's leather daddy war boy desert land and get back to her girls, but won't leave without taking all the hottest women from Joe's harem of breeders with her. When Joe realizes that Furiosa has straight up stolen all his hot ladies, he sends his war boys to track her down in a series of action-packed, explosion-filled car chases through the deserted post-apocalyptic wastelands. When she does finally get back to lesbian mecca, everyone is so excited to see her. But things are no longer going well for them in The Green Place, so Furiosa adds a bunch of the dykes on bikes to her pack and heads back to challenge and overthrow Immortan Joe. Between the intense sapphic energy of the Vuvalini, Furiosa's whole shaved head, protector of hot women aesthetic, and the absolute camp that is Immortan Joe and his pack of shiny boy toys, we cannot see this movie as anything other than a gay masterpiece. It's been 9 years that we've been waiting for director George Miller to make another Mad Max movie. We'll have to keep waiting because he still hasn't made a Mad Max movie with the new movie, Furiosa. In the 2015 smash hit Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa was really a co-lead character with Mad Max ironically enough given Mad Max is literally in the movie title. As a result, the assumption by some is that the world was begging for a Furiosa origins movie and now they get it. Furiosa stars Anya Taylor Joy as a younger version of the titular character, formerly played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. In Furiosa, we're introduced to Furiosa as a little girl living in a “green place” in the middle of the post-apocalyptic desert Wasteland of Australia. However, she sees some bad guys invading the “green place” and they take her captive. That results in her Mom giving chase to save her daughter and that sets off a chaotic chain of events that includes meeting Chris Hemsworth's Dementus character. He's the leader of a massive gang of Wasteland motorcycle riders and he wants to know where the green place is. This movie does include some of the same type of action scenes that Fury Road had, along with showing us more in-depth, some Wasteland fortresses we didn't see as much in that previous movie. We glossed over an important ingredient in the film's success and we're going to make amends as we break down all the Mad Maxes. I'm joined this week by my kid sister, the renowned English lit snob and biker movie enthusiast Roseanne Caputi and returning to the program after a year-long spell are both author and hypnotherapist Joe Field and erstwhile photographer, musician, podcaster and now website owner Kendrick WrightThe synopses: Mad Max is set “a few years” into the future where society is breaking down and car and motorcycle gangs rule the road striking fear into the hearts of ordinary schmoes just trying to survive. Main Force Patrol officer Max Rockatansky has everything ] taken from him, when his wife and kid are killed by the evil Toecutter and a soul-crushed Max becomes a one-man killing force, The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2 raises the stakes of its predecessor, and calls out the societal issue as a great war between two tribes and picks up the story with Max travelling the barren, hellish, post-apocalyptic highways and stumbling upon an evil road gang led by a brute named Lord Humungus. Humungus is hellbent on invading a compound belonging to a group of civilized and intelligent settlers who have built an oasis around the last of the oil wells and have running lights and supplies. Losing numbers and their morale under the constant attacks of Humungus, the settlers hatch a plan to escape the vermin on wheels and flee to the coast with their oil in tow. With the help of Max and a pilot called the Gyro Captain, the settlers are given a chance to survive and a little notion called hope. “ In Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Max, now a full-fledged nomadic warrior, has all his possessions stolen and in trying to track them down, finds a sleazy desert trading post called Bartertown. Max strikes a bargain with the town's ruler Aunty Entity in order to regain his possessions. When Max refuses to kill a simple man, he is sent out into the desert to die but is saved by a tribe of kids looking for a hero. Mad Max: Fury Road finds Max imprisoned in a rock fortress called the Citadel and forced into being a blood supplier for the sickly War Boys of the cult warlord leader Immortan Joe. When Joe's chief transportation lieutenant Imperator Furiosa betrays Joe and smuggles his wives from Joe's harem to bring them to the safety of the Green Place, Joe's Army and the armies of the neighboring Bullet Town and Gas Town give a desperate chase to get Joe's wives back. During the chaos, Max escapes captivity and forms an uneasy alliance with Furiosa as the two hurtle down Fury Road in an epic chase for their lives and the future of civilization. Mel Gibson is out and Tom Hardy is in! Mad Max finally returned after a 30 year hiatus with Fury Road. This time around he's tangled himself up with Immortan Joe, a warlord of the wastelands on a vengeful quest to retrieve his stolen brides from Charlize Theron's Furiosa. At long last, we have arrived at the end of the Car Season, SHINY AND CHROME! This week we reviewed the iconic reboot of an iconic franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road. This time around Tom Hardy plays our eponymous hero as he aids Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron) as she launches a daring escape with Immortan Joe's five wives from The Citadel. It's a absolutely buck wild ride front to back and a perfect send-off for a buck wild Car Movie Marathon.
