Dencast is the Podcast Series from San Francisco underground venue The Den, featuring live recordings and related experimental sets. Hip-hop, future beats, glitch, breaks and downtempo sounds with exclusive mixes from international and local acts.
Oh Jacob 2-2, how The Den loves you! We first connected through Kid Kameleon's Create Digital Music article on VHSwave. Eventually we ended up meeting in person in New York the same time we hooked up with oddlogic. Now we've finally got a hazy mix from him named Fair Hearings, Grand Designs. It's a delicious meandering through the broken synth grooves and weird tweaky melodies of the 80s, 90s, 00s and today. It's an awesome preview of what this coming summer might sound like. Or maybe it's a past Summer you forgot you had. Either way, we're doubly happy to have it in February! Jacob 2-2 says that he's finishing up a new LP and we get a sneak preview of some his new material and remixes in the 2nd half of the mix. So, cozy up to the speakers and let Jacob 2-2 help you dream of warm humming circuits.
Den Master Kid Kameleon turns in a winter-y mix for the 8th installment of our series - turning his eyes and ears towards Japan to find sounds that excite him. A phrase that stuck with him while making the mix was "Snowy Lava" - It's the name of an Ametsub track and even though that particular track didn't end up on the mix, lots of other Ametsub did. "Snowy Lava" is a metaphor for the mix's sound - equal parts icy, crystalline, frosty complexity and wild tectonic forces of magma, energy, and heat. It's a mix that tries to capture the moment when those two elements meet, and when potentially destructive forces combine in beautiful, delicate and complex ways. The tracks on it certainly aren't all from Japanese producers - England, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and France are all represented in here - but there's only one American (Infinitirock) among the bunch. Perhaps it's Kid Kameleon's clarion call to the world to let it know that such music has a place here in San Francisco - and to establish the Den as an outpost for international sounds and artists when their travels take them to the West Coast of the US.
Oddlogic is one of the folks we truly admire these days. In just the past couple years he's become a major node in the scene that those of us in it don't even have a really good name for - somewhere between instrumental hip-hop, glitch, dustup and just raw emotion. It's just the kind of thing The Den is all about and oddlogic has an ever-increasing talent for it in his productions. What's more, he attracts like-minded producers from around the globe to his label Outlier Recordings, focused on the same general sound and which just put out its 7th full length showcase compilation, Outsourced Vol. 7. Tinker and Kid Kameleon had the pleasure of connecting with him in New York the last time they were there, and from that connection oddlogic has given us a superb, darkly dreamy mix of 13 tracks from both himself and fellow producers like Petter, Photay, Nathan Fake and others. His brand of sonic (odd)logic is fully on display as he weaves a beautiful tapestry of sound together for the winter-y nights of the last few days of the year. We hope it keeps you and your loved ones warm for the holidays.
To quote one of the attendees, "I danced the equivalent of 3.6 miles tonight!" Massive thanks to all the dancers for seriously throwing down last Saturday! Featuring mind blowing sets by Obstac, Tinker, Race Traitor, and Drifts, the Nov 17th party was clearly one of our best Den events yet. For podcast number six, we are honored to share a live recording of Drift's set from the Den. Flying in all the way from Edmonton Canada just to play this show, Drifts delivered an unparalleled set of beats, bass, 2-step, breaks, wonky hip-hop, and even a bit of "Slo-mo shifty techno!" If Drifts is not yet on your radar, he should be. This mix will NOT disappoint!
For our 5th Podcast installment, Den hostess Tinker steps up and delivers a gorgeous mix in her trademark galaxy girl style, aimed equally at the head and the feet. It's a collection of her favorite picks of 2012 and tracks debuted for audiences at festivals and clubs throughout the summer. There's even two originals here that are just too good to stay locked up on her computer. Sonically the mix starts off dreamy and ends up with the bass-driven swung attitude that's at the core of her unique sound.
Featuring incredible sets by Dailon, Kouta, Space Ghost, and Kid Kameleon, overwhelming response dictates that the October 6th Den show was off the hook. For our next podcast, we are pleased to share a live recording of Dailon's set from that show. Perfect for summer or days that feel like summer, expect a set full of sweet surprises, drifting melodies and lazy beats. Dailon is a recent transplant to the Bay area and debuted some brand new material in this very special set.
New quick mix from our upcoming October guest Space Ghost. It's a mashup of a few classics and some new tracks as well - all very eclectic, which we fully support. You definitely will want to check out Space Ghost's full length out this past summer on Astro Nautico.
Fresh mix from our man Juj. Now back in sweet home LA, we had the pleasure of having him play the Den last Spring. Enjoy this melodic sketch.
Our kickoff event on April 21st at The Den was a phenomenal success with top-notch performances by Rumpistol / Red Baron, Juj, Dr. Toast, and Thriftworks. As a special treat, we are going to launch our Cloudcast series with a live recording of Thriftworks' set. This is a classier mix from Thriftworks, semi-DJed, and incorporates his peers and inspirations. This slinky, sexy set features tracks from Lapalux, Balam Acab, B. Lewis, Insightful, and some unreleased Thriftworks originals.
