BREAKING: President Trump's Justice Department has closed a 28-year-old immigration loophole—and every state is now on notice.The DOJ Office of Legal Counsel has withdrawn a restrictive Clinton-era opinion from 1998. Under the DOJ's restored interpretation of the 1996 welfare-reform law, all component agencies of states participating in TANF and SSI—not merely the agencies administering those programs—are covered by federal reporting requirements involving people known to be unlawfully present in the United States.Under the TANF provision, states must provide DHS with names, addresses and other identifying information at least four times each year and whenever DHS requests it.All 50 states, Washington, D.C., and several U.S. territories currently participate in TANF and SSI. DOJ also warns that failure to comply with federal requirements could carry serious consequences, potentially including the loss of program funding.This does not automatically deport anyone or independently authorize an ICE operation. Du Quoin, Illinois is having a rough week, and this one hits close to home.Massive downtown fire in Rafe's hometown of Du Quoin. Multiple businesses were destroyed, including Home Lumber Company, BJ's Garden Inn and other properties along the downtown business district. Making an already difficult situation even worse, the fire happened during the Du Quoin State Fair, one of the biggest economic weeks of the year for the small Southern Illinois community.Rafe talks about seeing the damage to a downtown that's already watched businesses disappear over the years, while Lern shares her own memories of growing up nearby and planning entire summers around the Du Quoin State Fair. Thankfully, the transcript reports no injuries or deaths, but the loss is still devastating for a town of roughly 6,000 people.So the crew sends some love south and encourages everybody heading to the fair to support Du Quoin however they can.Then, eventually, the daily comedy machine starts malfunctioning again.The conversation turns into a full Southern Illinois State Fair nostalgia session, complete with Wiz Khalifa, Russell Dickerson, demo derbies, Night Ranger and Rafe remembering the time he watched Joe Diffie put on what felt like a full stadium concert inside a tiny Budweiser beer tent. Nobody reaches a universal consensus because democracy has failed once again.Things somehow become less appetizing when the crew discovers a Walgreens three-in-one product described as a douche, enema and water-bottle combination system. There are some household products where “multipurpose” is a selling point. This may not be one of them.The show then gets into a study suggesting men have a complicated relationship with dieting, including the idea that some men may respond better to “goals” and “challenges” than the word “diet.” Rafe offers his own theory after seeing wildly confident dudes criticize women online while looking, in his words, like a thumb melting into a suit. Many of you founders working with niche ingredients out there might have struggled with this question: How do you build a new category when consumers don't yet understand the ingredient, retailers don't know where to place it, and nobody is walking into stores asking for it? In this episode of Brand Growth Heroes, I speak with Andrew Hunt, co-founder and CEO of Aduna Superfoods, about what category creation around niche ingredients really looks like for CPG founders. I'm going to tell you something different, because I've watched too many good people sit around whining about their why and going absolutely nowhere with it. There's something that comes first. It's smaller, it's simpler, and it's the thing that actually gets you moving. Once you see it, you can't unsee it, and you'll catch it happening in your own head all day long. Then I'll hand you the one action you're not taking. It's easier than the advice you've been given. Let's get to work. Featured Story In June I told you I was starting a community. About two hundred of you raised your hands and said, "Count me in." Then I went quiet. Not another word for months. My mouth got out ahead of my brain, sure. But that wasn't the real problem. I knew what I wanted to build, and I hadn't figured out how to build it right. I wanted you to have a coach who actually answers your questions, not one more course collecting dust on a shelf somewhere. So I sat with it. When I finally came back around, I had something better. That quiet stretch taught me something I still can't shake. Important Points * Your why is never the starting line. The what shows up first, and the why comes rolling in about one second behind it. * If you can't name what you actually want, you will spin in circles all year long, no matter how strong your why feels. * Massive action wears people out before they start. Massive imperfect action moves them, because perfect isn't required. Memorable Quotes * A goal is not a why. A goal is a what if you don't have a what, you are going to sit there and spin in circles. * Nobody wants to take massive action. They want their thing. They just want to get whatever it is they want. * That one word, imperfect, frees people to go after it. It doesn't have to be perfect. You just have to do it.
