A marriage can look “fine” on the outside while slowly starving on the inside. We start with Hebrews 13:4 and get uncomfortably practical: even if we never commit physical adultery, what happens when our phone, our shows, our workouts, or our grind gets the best of our attention and our affection? I talk through how loyalty can leak away in ordinary habits, and why honoring the marriage bed is also about where we place our focus, patience, and energy. From there we sit in Luke 8, where a violent storm exposes the disciples' fear and Jesus asks the question that still stops me cold: “Where is your faith?” We follow the story into the healing of the man filled with “Legion,” and we face the strange response of the crowd that begs Jesus to leave. I connect that to the ways we can quietly push God out of our lives because we're afraid of what obedience might cost. Along the way I read Psalm 71 as a grounded prayer for rescue, courage, and joy, and I reflect on Proverbs 12:4 and the real influence a wife has to build up or tear down a home.We also touch American history and public life, including a Medal of Honor spotlight and a John Jay quote on choosing Christian rulers, plus hard commentary on ideology, violence, and the importance of keeping America a Christian nation. If you care about biblical marriage, Christian faith under pressure, Scripture reading, prayer, and American heritage, you'll find plenty to wrestle with here. Snow and perceptual drift is this week's show. This episode includes the heaviest moments of precipitation (for us, early in the morning 1/25), which dumped white stuff all over my backyard and 56.1% of the contiguous United States. We wound up with about 10 inches. As I write this, I have just finished cursing about the school cancelling our last chance to push the kids out the door this week. It has been freezing and there's snow everywhere — so I get it. However, the kids have been home starting fights and wanting Panera for lunch all week. I'm done. And the constant melt and refreezing has left us gingerly moving about outside. I already slipped and fell off the back deck trying to wrestle with bins for trash pickup. I landed directly on my *** slid down a few steps and into hardened snow at the foot of the stairs. I looked around to see if anyone had witnessed. It's embarrassing falling in front of people — over the summer, I hit a soft shoulder with my bike, trying to put my feet down to stop myself going down a hill toward the banks of a pond. I flipped head over heels into a barrel roll in front of no fewer than four people. And I'm getting to the age where people aren't saying, “Look at that doofus.” Literal Boy Scouts have tried to rescue me — like, guys, you can't help me, I fall off of **** a lot. I fell off a moving train once.So getting to the mailbox over the icy sidewalks has been a challenge.Does anyone else rap to themselves when they are concentrating? Not freestyle — that would be absurd. No, calling upon the great verses of hip hop. I recite Inspectah Deck's “Movin' on a ***** with the speed of a centipede…” while surreptitiously eating candy with my kids in the other room. There are verses in my brain I call upon when I especially need to concentrate. As with icy conditions, I recall one of the slowest, most pedestrian lines in hip hop: Eazy-E's verse on Foe tha Love of $. And no shade to Eazy-E — he was a legend… who had a few pedestrian lines (I'm using pedestrian again, as I don't want in on any rap beefs).Eazy-E slowly raps, “So I dash, I duck, and I hide behind a tree,” to hide from the police (while working as a street pharmacist). It's pretty simple stuff.Look, I'm an Eazy-E fan. I played Merry Mutha******  Xmas every December on my college radio Christmas show in central Vermont. When Daz rapped, “**** B.G. Knocc Out and every ****** down with him,” I knew who B.G. Knocc Out was — I had B.G. Knocc Out (and Dresta's) cassette; the duo were featured heavily on Eazy-E's Str8 off tha Streetz of ************ Compton. And that album has “Just Tah Let U Know,” my fave Eazy track. BTW: lewd — lots of swears, Mom (don't click any links).

He addresses the pull toward theological minimalism and novelty-driven spirituality, the loss of historic convictions in modern evangelicalism, and how historical theology helps believers remain faithful to Scripture while engaging today's culture.Dr. Marsh also clarifies the difference between biblical faith and mere traditionalism, and offers practical steps pastors and believers can take to cultivate a faithful, rooted Christianity. This episode includes an affiliate link. Episode 258 - Rorke's Drift, Part Two: Dabulamanzi's Gamble and Chard's Night of Horrors

History of South Africa podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 18, 2026 21:47

Episode 258 Rorke's Drift part two. It's important to listen to Episode 257 because that sets everything up for this episode - there's too much to repeat particularly in the layout of the buildings which were fully described in Episode 257. There were around 330 British and Natal Native Contingement troops marooned at Rorke's Drift, about to be attacked by 4000 Zulu warriors. Approaching rapidly, the reserve amabutho of the Zulu army, led by Prince Dabulamanzi - a man who was driven by pride and personal valor — loyal to his king and brave, yet impulsive compared with Cetshwayo kaMpande's politics of restraint. Dabulamanzi's name means the one who conquers waters, and most apt because he had decided to lead the warriors across the Mzinyathi River into Natal. A literal crossing and a metaphorical defiance. Zulu oral tradition refers to this battle as Shiyane by the way, or kwaJimu, Jims land after Jim Rorke who build the trading store. It was 4pm, January 22nd 1879. The barricades were still going up the drift, the sacks of mielies, the boxes of bully beef and biscuits, when Lieutenant Henderson and Hlubi Molife of the baTlokoa Native contingent rode up with 80 of their men. Lieutenant John Chard of the Royal Engineers who commanded the post realised they'd managed to make their own way across the Mzinyathi pontoon, and he asked the horsemen to reccie up the river beyond Shiyane mountain. If you remember, that was the high point immediately behind Rorke's Drifts two buildings, the house slash hospital, and the trading store, slash church, slash commissariat. Henderson offered to help defend the supply depot - a hollow offer as you'll hear shortly. Chard had been operating blindly since his observers had scurried back down the Shiyane after they realised three groups of Zulu regiments were approaching. Henderson took his mounted unit around the southern flank of the Shiyane where they could observe the territory from higher ground. Moments later scattered shots were heard, and Henderson and his unit galloped up and he shouted “Here they come, as black as hell and as thick as grass…” Henderson and another rider, Bob Hall, lingered for some moments beyond the orchard in front of Rorke's Drift, firing a few shots to the north, then turned and galloped away. They had survived Isandlwana and could not stomach further action. Chard was going to bump into these two later during the Anglo-Zulu war and they would apologize for fleeing and leaving the small group of defenders to fend for themselves. Watching from within the wall of boxes and bags were the Natal Native Contingent, and their commanders. Stevenson's men flung down the sacks they were using to construct the walls, and bolted through the barricades, following Henderson. Their white officers ran away as well, along with their NCOs, including Corporal Anderson. He was a Scandinavian who spoke very little English, and the sight of the men of the NNC he commanded running away, along with their supposed officers, panicked him and he ran off. Soldiers of Bravo Company left behind were enraged, several opened fire on the cowards fleeing the scene. Corporal Anderson was shot through the back of the head - killed instantly. It was another irony of South African history right there. The first man on the British side to die at Rorke's Drift was shot by his own side.

In this episode, Brody shares how to stay anchored in Christ when life's transitions and cultural pressures tempt us to drift. Drawing from decades of ministry experience, he unpacks the subtle warning signs of spiritual drift and offers practical wisdom for staying faithful through every season. With encouragement from Hebrews 2:1 and 2 Peter 1:10, Brody reminds us that no one drifts toward holiness—spiritual growth requires focus, discipline, and daily dependence on Jesus.Spiritual drift often starts with neglecting Scripture and leads to doubt, dullness, and disconnectionHebrews 2:1 warns us to “pay closer attention” to the truth we've heard2 Peter 1:10 calls us to confirm our calling through consistent, intentional growthAnchoring your identity in who Jesus is—Creator, King, High Priest—keeps you steadyLasting faithfulness often comes through relationships with mature, accountable believersExpect criticism when you're making a gospel impact—keep your hand to the plowThose who walk away from the faith often first pull away from community and accountabilityNO SANITY REQUIRED BOOKSend us a textPlease leave a review on Apple or Spotify to help improve No Sanity Required and help others grow in their faith.
