As an entrepreneur navigating significant life changes and milestones, Jacquie Verenka embarked on a transformative journey of healing and self-discovery. Through this process, she realized the vital importance of prioritizing self-care—a lesson that resonated deeply with many others she encountered along the way. Witnessing firsthand the struggles of those around her ignited a passion to create a space for healing and renewal. This inspiration led to the founding of JV Ventures Retreats, where she aims to provide others with the time and tools they need to reconnect with themselves and embark on their own journeys of growth. Through these retreats, she aims to foster a community of healing and transformation. Her retreats are designed not only to foster personal growth and well-being among participants but also to create a positive impact in the community. She believes that meaningful transformation extends beyond individual experiences: by partnering with local charities and causes, Jacquie aims to Give Back and support those in need. Each retreat incorporates opportunities for participants to engage with and contribute to these initiatives, fostering a spirit of connection and shared purpose. Together, people can grow while uplifting their community. Join Our Community of Canadian Entrepreneurs! Homes: A Refugee Story By Abu Bakr Al-Rabeeah and Winnie Yeung was recommended to us by our audiobook curator, Aamer Khan, as part of a previous episode where we discussed books that can make us shed a tear... or three. Ramya and I read it and now, we've reconvened with Aamer to record a proper in depth review. It's a great, accessibly written, true story about a tightknit family as they try to find a place to call home. Originally from Iraq, they move to Syria, only to be caught up in the civil war. While they eventually make their way to Edmonton Canada, the time they spend in Syria, anxiously toiling through the refugee process will mark them forever. This book does a lot to humanize the countless refugees around the world, who are too often reduced to simple statistics. Here it is on audible. Note that it's also available on CELA: https://www.audible.ca/pd/Homes-Audiobook/B07QHG7N5V Plus, Jeff Ryman joins us in the second half for his turn at rapid fire review. Here are Jeff's RFR selections: Burke's Law: A Life in Hockey by Brian Burke Colin Kaepernick: Change the Game by Colin Kaepernick Runnin'' with the Devil: A Backstage Pass to the Wild Times, Loud Rock, and the Down and Dirty Truth Behind the Making of Van Halen by Noel Monk I Am Ozzy – By Ozzy Osbourne The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band by Mick Mars, Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Neil Strauss

Together they are concerned with elevating the conditions of humanity. There will be many voices to consider and expand beliefs. In this video interview, Cal Jungwirth, Director of Permanent Placement Services with Robert Half, discusses some new research indicating more than four in 10 professionals today are looking for a new job. He talks about the reasons for that and what companies need to do to attract and retain people. PRESS RELEASE  Despite an uncertain economy leading to less turnover in the labour market recently, the demand for skilled talent remains high, which is good news for the Canadian professionals looking for new opportunities. According to new Robert Half research, 42 per cent of workers have already started looking or plan to look for a new job in the first half of 2024, up slightly from 41 per cent in July 2023, but down from 50 per cent in December 2022. Professionals Most Likely to Make a Move   February 2024 July 2023  Gen Z  67% 64% Marketing and Creative 67% 51% Millennial's 57% 49% HR 72% 42% Workers' Main Motivators With inflation and cost of living top of many people's minds, it's no surprise that salary is the largest motivating factor. When asked what would lead them to look for a new position, workers cited: A higher salary (47%) More advancement opportunities (32%) Better perks and benefits (31%) A job with more flexibility (31%) What's Making People Stay?  Though slightly more professionals are seeking new roles compared to 6 months ago, the number is down from where it was a year ago. Some of the reasons behind this are: Their current job offers a level of flexibility that they aren't willing to lose (38%) They feel fulfilled in their current role (36%) They feel well compensated for their work (30%) Demand is High for Skilled Workers Our research shows that over half (54 per cent) of hiring managers are actively seeking talent for new roles, mostly to support company growth, and organizations are primed to move ahead with strategic initiatives. However, competition for professionals with in-demand skills remains high. Most managers (64 per cent) say it takes longer to hire now than a year ago, and they risk losing skilled people to competitors if they don't speed things up. For more information about The Demand for Skilled Talent, visit our report here. About the Research The online survey was developed by Robert Half and conducted by an independent research firm from October 27-November 17, 2023. It includes responses from more than 765 workers 18 and older in finance and accounting, technology, marketing and creative, legal, administrative and customer support, human resources, and other areas at companies with 20 or more employees in Canada. A conversation between Jim Schleckser and Dave Warren Jim: Today we going to talk about several important business topics for CEOs with a long-term member of The CEO project and a friend of mine, Dave Warren. Dave is a serial entrepreneur. He started and owned, a couple of different businesses, but he's kind of a student of business. Dave really appreciates business as much as I do. Tell us a little bit about that business and why you started that business versus any other business you might get into. Dave: From the time I graduated from college, I was looking for a business to buy. The day I graduated, I found a partner and tried to buy the bookstore I had been working at, but quickly realized that, even with the best of intentions, if you didn't have a little capital. Then, contrary to my dad's advice, who had a 40-year career in the oil industry. His advice was, whatever you do, don't get into this business. And of course, like every good son, I just ignored him and got into it. At the end of the day, it's what you've seen and what you grew up with. So I got into the oil field, started out in field service, then got into manufacturing, and then into distribution. And then in 1995, I was working for a company in steel distribution and went to them and said, I think there's a different way to structure this business. At the time it was very transactional. I said I think there's a different way to put supply chains in place other than this transactional model that everybody's been using. I went to the owners of that business and said, what do you think? And they said we like what we're doing. But I felt compelled to try this and so I started it with two partners. We just started doing what we did, servicing the heck out of the customers and providing solutions. And they knew they could come to us, with issues or problems or things that they were trying, to solve, and we would come up with an answer. We kept reinvesting in the business. We got up to about 70 million in revenue over about an eight- or nine-year period. At the time, there was a lot of talk about the oil industry not going to be a domestic industry anymore. So, we figured we needed to get into, either needed to be a good, small regional business or we needed to expand the business and go global. So over about a period of 24 months, we did two acquisitions, one in the US and one a UK subsidiary of a French conglomerate. We tripled the size of the business. Each one of those was doing about 70 million in revenue. We basically put together a global footprint and looked at kind of the geographies of the products on the customers, and we did a three-dimensional matrix on what we wanted the acquisitions to solve. By the time we finished that 24-month period, we had solved most of what we wanted as far as what our vision was on how to service the market. We put in supply chains, support for manufacturing and operations on a global basis for people globally building, equipment for drilling, and downhill tools. Jim: Interesting. Follow the customer, right? If I see the customer migrating, I go with them, or I don't. What was the competitive advantage compared to the transactional companies that could do exactly what you could do? They could buy and they could sell, but what made what you did differently? Was it, was there an engineering element? What were the pieces that made that business different? Dave: Back to the partnering idea. We convinced customers to let us behind the curtain, we would talk to them about their forecast, and their bill of materials, and then tried to rationalize because every part was designed kind of as a unique part. With its own unique raw material. What we tried to do was, was rationalize and consolidate their spending into a smaller number of raw material SKUs. Then we would consolidate that demand over multiple customers and try to drive everything to a consistent supply chain inventory. So, we were able to buy by doing that and with the scale that we had, we were able to look at various customer demand points by region and then work with the mills and the suppliers to bring in higher volume. Plus, we were able to give the customer value by lowering their individual transactional costs. Jim: Did that translate into loyalty because you're trying to move from transactional to relational? Did it work or did they say, thanks for all the help, now let's talk about your price Dave: It worked for a while. But competitors started catching up. The business as you see now, even the oil industry cycles dramatically. It goes from a period of oversupply to undersupply quickly. In times when they were having trouble getting material, there was a lot of loyalty in times when there was a business downturn. There was kind of a diminishing loyalty on both the supplier and the customer side, depending on where we were in the cycle. Jim: Let's go over the capital structure, this is expensive stuff and you're holding a lot of inventory for these people. So, talk and tell us how you financed all that inventory. Dave: We financed it primarily with debt with the idea after we got things kind of rationalized, we got the synergies out of the business. We would deal by bringing in a partner to take some of the debt out. Unfortunately, it happens quickly, and demand falls off quickly. There's a huge supply chain requirement in place, and it doesn't happen overnight. There's a lot of capital that must be deployed and people need to have a comfort level that it's safe to deploy it and the industry's going to continue to be supported over an investment time. Jim: So, you brought in partners, was that debt and then later equity, and obviously it's a cyclical business, so you hit a downturn. How did your equity partners or your debt partners react? And what did that look like? The reason why I want to go down this path, Dave, is there's some learning in here I think for people about what can happen good, what can happen bad in that, and maybe what you want to do before that to protect it. For more of this conversation about business models, capital structure, and managing investors, listen to this episode of The Lay CEO Podcast. Thank you to our guest, Dave Warren Helping companies position for growth and scale-ability, Dave has led diverse and multimillion-dollar revenue streams with businesses in Texas, Mexico, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Edmonton (Canada), the UK, Dubai, Singapore, and Korea. With expertise in capital formation, capital raises, and scaling, Dave founded a global family distribution and manufacturing company in the mid-90s growing it from zero to $500M in sales and 800 employees at the peak of our business. They grew exponentially in the alloy metals industry in the highly volatile oil and gas sector. In this journey, Dave has built and scaled businesses and led great people. Dave has driven growth organically and through acquisitions. David Tiefenbach, Owner, Atta-Boy Property Inspections, grew up in a small town just east of Regina and spent a lot of time at his grandparents' grain farm. It was an integral part of his life at a young age. After high school he went into the plumbing and gas fitting trade, moved to Edmonton 2005 and started his plumbing business in 2006. In 2017 he was excited to get into the cannabis business but "ended up losing my shirt." In 2018 he got his home inspector licenses and started Atta Boy Property Inspections early 2019. His intent was always to sell Atta-Boy franchises and help others in the trades to find something different and easier on the body. "I have a strong belief and I have the determination to make this successful for trades people and any other with a good work ethic who are interested. I know my support system on the business side is what really matters for the franchisees to become and stay successful. This isn't about home inspections this is about learning the business about home inspections. This is about building relationships for success. That's why I call it Inspection Success," he says. In February 2023, Atta-Boy will start taking applications from any teenagers from 15 to 19 who may think they might be interested in Home Inspecting and seeing other trades in action from framers, electricians, plumbers, HVAC guys and insulators. He has set up a summer school holiday program from July 1 to Aug 31 for teenagers to have an opportunity to shadow these trades in action and to spend the last remaining 2 weeks with him shadowing him doing home inspections. It's all free and the intent is to spike interest and possibly look at a trade school and possibly maybe a future Atta-Boy franchisee owner after learning their trade of choice. By Maureen LeClair Maureen is a 61 year old woman, who lives in rural Alberta, just north of Edmonton Canada. She grew up in the area, and has very strong ties to the community. She is the second youngest of five children, and weight has been a “concern” for as long as she can remember. She has lost, gained back, lost, gained back weight multiple times throughout her life – starting as a child of around 8 years of age. Following traditional Calories In/Calories Out – low fat diets. Her mom was a nurse, and was continuously on / off diets, trying different weight loss techniques - never “obese”, 20 – 40 lbs overweight. Dad always maintained healthy weight. Siblings were all “normal healthy” weight in their youth. She doesn't have any underlying health issues, blood sugar, cholesterol, BP levels all within normal ranges. Exception is an underactive thyroid, has been on medication for approximately 15 years. Maureen acknowledges she was an emotional eater; food was a source of comfort. Salty snacks, breads were her drug of choice. She also embraced a lifestyle that involved a lot of socializing and drinking. Not one for fast foods, soda drinks, sugary treats actually had a very healthy diet for the most part. Whole, unprocessed foods were always her preference. Considers herself blessed to have strong relationships with her brother and his family; nieces / nephews, great nieces / nephews. Has many long-term friendships, many of whom have offspring that are like family to her as well. Has had a very diverse work history, lots of rewarding life experiences. Found her “calling” as a health and safety professional about 20 years ago, absolutely loves and is passionate about her work. Loves being outside, traveling and exploring Canada, scenic walks or hikes, working in yard or garden, star gazing, campfires, water activities. Life has thrown Maureen some curve balls, and she has found a resilience she never knew she had. She is exceedingly grateful for where she is now, and the new found HOPE she has discovered through the intermittent fasting way of life and way of eating. #gratefulprairiegirl News.
