In October, 2024, the Law Union of Ontario held their 50th anniversary conference, titled "Revolutionary Advocacy." Its keynote speaker was Harsha Walia, who is alleged to have led "Death to Canada" chants at an anti-Israel protest hosted by Samidoun, the designated terrorist organization. If an Ontario lawyer participated in that conference, they would have received credit from the Law Society of Ontario, and that infuriated Ontario human rights lawyer Bryant Greenbaum, who soon filed a complaint against the society for recognizing the validity of such an event and its speaker. But the LSO did not apologize or backtrack, which forced Greenbaum to take both them and the host, the Law Union of Ontario, to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal.

Iain McGilchrist calls William Blake “the least cosy of poets and one of the most insightful that ever lived.” Blake is cited more often than most figures in Iain's great book, "The Matter With Things".So what did Blake express that might much matter now? How did he understand key features of our humanity such as the imagination and inspiration, as well as the character of our day?In this conversation, prompted by the publication of "Awake!", Iain and Mark often land on wonderful quotes of Blake to unpack them. ”To the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.” “As a man is, so he sees.” "If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is: infinite."They explore Blakean imagery such as the spiral shape of Jacob's Ladder. Contemporary concerns are central too, from architecture to AI. Above all, they celebrate Blake as a figure who can guide our desires, aid us with the contraries of modern life, and sustain our faith that life is good, for all the ills that surround us.For more on Iain's work - https://channelmcgilchrist.comFor more on Mark's work - https://www.markvernon.comMark's new book on William Blake is “Awake! If you've ever looked out and seen glazed-over eyes… or walked off stage and didn't get the results you wanted, this episode is for you. As a former software developer and technology strategist who has presented at countless conferences and meetups, I've learned what works — and what doesn't — when it comes to making technical or detail-heavy presentations land with impact. If you're in a technical field — technology, software, AI, science, healthcare, academia, finance - this episode is especially for you. I share 6 key strategies you can use today to make your presentations more engaging, memorable, and actionable — so you not only inform but also inspire your audience. The one thing I never do anymore in technical talks — and what I do now (learned the hard way at a Microsoft event years ago) Whether you're speaking to peers in your industry or to potential clients, you'll walk away from this episode with practical strategies to improve your next presentation. Part 1 A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle Summary"A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose" by Eckhart Tolle is a spiritual guide that explores the concept of consciousness and the need for a shift in awareness to create a better world. Here's a summary of its key themes:Ego and Identification: Tolle discusses how the ego shapes our identities and perceptions. The ego is driven by a desire for recognition, validation, and superiority, which leads to suffering and discontent. Recognizing the ego's influence is the first step towards transcending it.The Power of Presence: A core teaching in the book is the importance of living in the present moment. Tolle emphasizes that true happiness and peace can only be found when we stop dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. By practicing mindfulness and being present, we can experience life more fully.Awakening: The book encourages readers to undergo a spiritual awakening, which involves realizing the deeper self beyond the ego. Tolle emphasizes that awakening to one's true nature can lead to a profound shift in awareness and a greater connection with the universe.Collective Awakening: Tolle addresses the idea that a new earth—a more conscious and loving world—requires a collective shift in human consciousness. This can occur as more individuals awaken to their true selves and move away from ego-driven behaviors.Suffering and Acceptance: Tolle explores the nature of suffering and how accepting the present moment can alleviate it. He asserts that suffering often arises from resistance to what is. Learning to embrace our experiences, even the painful ones, is a pathway to growth and transformation.Purpose and Service: The book stresses that finding one's purpose is essential. Tolle suggests that true purpose comes from serving others and contributing to the greater good rather than seeking personal gain or recognition. This service stems from a place of love and genuine connection.Mind-Body Connection: Tolle also addresses the connection between the mind and body, emphasizing that awareness of the body can help ground individuals in the present moment and reduce over-identification with thoughts. In summary, "A New Earth" calls for a transformative shift in consciousness that can lead to a more meaningful existence and a harmonious world. It encourages readers to awaken from the ego's grip, embrace the present, and connect with a higher purpose through love and service.Part 2 A New Earth AuthorEckhart Tolle is a German-born spiritual teacher and author, best known for his work in the field of spirituality and consciousness. He gained widespread recognition with the release of his book "A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose," which was published in 2005. This book is a follow-up to his earlier work, "The Power of Now," which was released in 1997 and has become a classic in spiritual literature. Other Notable WorksIn addition to "A New Earth" and "The Power of Now," Eckhart Tolle has authored several other books, including:Stillness Speaks (2003) A collection of teachings on the importance of silence and presence.Practicing the Power of Now (2001) A guide featuring exercises and reflections for integrating the insights from "The Power of Now" into everyday life. The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment (revised editions) Updated versions that contain additional insights and reflections. The Light of Christ (forthcoming) A spiritual book that discusses Tolle's insights related to Christianity. Best EditionsIn terms of editions, "A New Earth" has various formats—hardcover, paperback, Kindle, and audiobook. The best edition often depends on personal preference:Audiobook Versions: Many readers find the audiobook version compelling, especially since Tolle narrates it himself.
