In this powerful episode of Documentary First, host Christian Taylor sits down with Emmy-winning filmmaker Robin Hamilton for a deep dive into the art of storytelling, social justice, and the impact of documentary filmmaking. Robin shares her journey from journalism to filmmaking, her passion for uncovering untold stories, and the responsibility filmmakers have in shaping conversations about history and justice. Together, they explore the significance of Fannie Lou Hamer's legacy, the challenges of tackling difficult histories, and the bravery required to address controversial topics. Dallas Thomas picked up a guitar and became a prolific Lucy's regular when he was just 14-years-old and barely able to lift his amp, playing with his friends in Fingerhutt, High Strung, Brown Cow, Little Monkey on a Stick, and Boobyhatch (to name just a few). And he was just getting started. After Lucy's, Dallas, Erik Holcombe, John Roberson and Chris Fox formed the “satanic thrash rock juggernaut” that was Asschapel. For seven years Asschapel toured the Western world. They even made it to Bosnia using only a German map, where they met that country's version of House O' Pain's Don Kendall. After the wild and bittersweet Asschapel ride, Dallas volunteered for a Hurricane Katrina relief organization which, sadly, left him disillusioned but, happily, helped him find his way back to playing music. For the next ten years Dallas would once again tour the world, this time with the experimental post-metal band Pelican. Now a father Dallas is exploring his hardcore roots as a member of READY FOR DEATH, a new band set to release their first record in December.  At the end of each interview I always ask if there is something we didn't get to that the guest would like to talk about. Usually everyone says no. Dallas surprised me when he said yes. But I wasn't surprised when what he wanted to talk about was his dad, Bill, who took supportive parenting to a whole new level. - READY FOR DEATH is a new Chicago-based death-thrash outfit made up of current and former members of Pelican, Racetraitor, Indecision, Annihilus, Luggage, Haggathorn, and Asschapel. This week, we're excited to (re-)present a 2015 conversation with Saralee Stafford and Neal Shirley, editors and authors of their book out from AK Press entitled "Dixie Be Damned: 300 years of Insurrection in the American South". The book is a study of Maroon, Indigenous, White, Black, worker, farmer, slave, indentured, women and men wrestling against institutions of power for autonomy and self-determination. All of this in a region stereotyped to be backwards, slow, lazy, victimized and brutal. The editors do a smash-bang job of re-framing narratives of revolt by drawing on complex and erased examples of cross-subjectivity struggles and what they can teach us today about current uprisings in which we participate. Throughout the hour we explore some of the examples that became chapters in the book, critiques of narrative histories and academia and what new ways forward might be towards an anarchist historiography. Justin, host of the New Monuments podcast, gets down this week to talk about his podcast and our relationship to this growing movement for racial justice. Justin talks to us about his recent reckoning to be more active in this monumental moment. On the first part of the show we talk about whether OUR ideas are in fact changing or our world is changing. We discuss whether we should be confrontational or understanding in dealing with those changes in our ideas and/our our reality. On the second part of the episode we talk about the challenges of organizing and what actions on our part would be commensurate with the times. We know Black Lives Matter, although we can all know this better, so we ask what can we DO to better understand this and live it. . We are all coming into this moment from different perspectives, but it is exciting and exhilarating, and occasionally frustrating too, to see how ideas and actions clash as they do in this conversation on how to move forward together. PLUS we listen to music from the newly released Shut It Down benefit compilation for The Movement for Black Lives with tunes from Minority Threat, The 1865, Thou, and Racetraitor. And we also play a shot from the past with Time Zone.

Greetings from Berkeley, Philadelphia, and Tacoma! This week, we chat about Viet Thanh Nguyen’s recent essay on Asian America, race, and class (Time); the abolition of whiteness advocated by Jay’s former mentor, Noel Ignatiev; and the dead-ends and possibilities of race talk in media. * Remember to keep sending us feedback and questions via Twitter at @ttsgpod or via email at timetosaygoodbyepod@gmail.com. * 3:35 – Nguyen’s article on the “trap of the ‘model minority’ stereotype.” In what ways is the category “Asian American” limiting, and in what ways is it enabling—or something we might productively transcend? 30:43 – How to be an Asian American race traitor: we discuss the journal Race Traitor, about “treason to whiteness,” and consider analogies to the professional Asian class. What’s the difference between the radical historians of whiteness and White Fragility? Can we practice anti-racist politics without reifying racial categories?49:48 – Are diversity gestures in the media world distraction from or emulation of real social change? After a brief and highly eventful intermission, we're back. After resisting the Wikileaks grand jury case, Jeremy is again transferred back to the feds....but gets stuck in the transfer center overflow joint Grady County Jail during the BOP lockdown. And this is the raggediest of dumps. Housed in dormitory units where social distancing is impossible, people are in Grady County share the same fate as prisoners throughout the world right now - being wrecked by Coronavirus at staggering rates. And all the jails do is pray that people won't be getting infected, because their response to the pandemic is at best described as willful indifference to the plight of the incarcerated. Mass releases have not been forthcoming, but grassroots movements have been doing everything to can to get as many people out of these deathpits as possible. All this while it's Mayday, and we're in the thick of a class war with millions out of jobs, with those still working facing new kinds of fuckery at the hands of the capitalists. Masking up is the new norm, as we're seeing mass rent strikes and work stoppage, car caravans and call-ins, as we evolve to new modes of bringing down this crumbling system, whilst avoiding the right-to-work bleach drinkers like the plague. Just kidding, we aren't staying away from them at all. This podcast, we're featuring a plothera of antifascist black metal artists, who've recently released a 4-way split - in order of appearance, Closet Witch, Haggathorn, Race Traitor, Neckbeard Deatcamp. Quarantine Coverage Episode #2: May Day. We celebrate International Workers’ Day from our unemployed quarantine by focusing on how this unique moment in history has made people more conscious about the ills of capitalism, the necessity of workers, the potential of science, and the need for alternatives to our current sorry state. Since we can’t be in the streets together this holiday, we celebrate by trying to see the joy in the selflessness we are seeing around us and the potential for change even in the most selfish acts of ignorant conspiracy whackos. We hear from Divin, a punk currently in a more literal lock down. He is in rehab and gives us his perspective on what’s going on there and out here in our own lockdowns. And we listen to music from Noogy, and two brand new songs from each of Days N Daze and Racetraitor’s new records.

Full transcript at laborwaveradio.com/jarrodshanahan We explore the life and legacy of Noel Ignatiev through conversation with Jarrod Shanahan, a life-long comrade of Noel's and co-editor along with Noel Ignatiev on the journal Hard Crackers. Noel Ignatiev passed on November 9, 2019 at the age of 78. He was a dedicated antiracist leftist who edited the journals Race Traitor and Hard Crackers and wrote the widely influential book How The Irish Became White. The enduring legacy of Noel Ignatiev's life and thought may best be summed up by the slogan printed on the cover of Race Traitor: "treason to whiteness is loyalty to humanity." We discuss with Jarrod Shanahan Noel's theoretical contributions to analyses on whiteness and "white skin privilege" as well as his ideas on how small groups of radicals can change society through instigating "creative provocation," such as practiced by the Abolitionists against chattel slavery in the United States. Jarrod Shanahan is an activist, educator, and researcher. His writing, which has appeared in outlets including Jacobin, Commune, Vice, and The New Inquiry, can be found at jarrodshanahan.com. Mani Mostofi from the band Racetraitor gets down to talk about current political in the US, the continuing rise of the far right, and political violence, the latter of which is sorely needed at this moment. In the wake of the horrible murders committed by a rightwing shooter in Pittsburgh as well as these whacked mail bombing attempts by a mega Trump supporter, the mainstream media and government officials have made a massive effort to cast all political violence in the same light, lumping together these backward nut jobs or crazy ass proud boys with the righteous struggle of antifascists here in the US. We sort all this out in a way the mainstream media is fully unwilling or unable to do, and Mani breaks it all down with incredible clarity. THEN we talk about Racetraitor’s new album “2042”, listen to a few tracks from their album and also listen to a few songs from Redbait and La Armada.

Andy Hurley from Fall Out Boy, Sect, RaceTraitor and many more jumps on Skype with me one afternoon to discuss SO many things including but not limited to dealing with fame, friends as family and radical politics. Over the past week, our beloved host was accused of three things. First, he was accused of being a Traitor to His Own Race. Next, he was accused of being a Genderist because he thinks women can be "stolen." Finally, he was accused of being a Big Baby in need of diapering. In this episode, we respond to our accusers!

To quote one of the attendees, "I danced the equivalent of 3.6 miles tonight!" Massive thanks to all the dancers for seriously throwing down last Saturday! Featuring mind blowing sets by Obstac, Tinker, Race Traitor, and Drifts, the Nov 17th party was clearly one of our best Den events yet. For podcast number six, we are honored to share a live recording of Drift's set from the Den. Flying in all the way from Edmonton Canada just to play this show, Drifts delivered an unparalleled set of beats, bass, 2-step, breaks, wonky hip-hop, and even a bit of "Slo-mo shifty techno!" If Drifts is not yet on your radar, he should be. This mix will NOT disappoint!

Noel Ignatiev, author of How The Irish Became White, will share his views on the System of White Supremacy. Professor Ignatiev will discuss his book, his website (Race Traitor) and what should be done to counter Racism. He has been quoted as saying the White race should be "abolished"; we will ask him how this should be done. We will also ask about White people who allege to be anti-racists - could this be a refined form of White Supremacy?
