Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership with Ruth Haley Barton
This week, Ruth and Marilyn discuss the concept of Blue Christmas services that acknowledge grief during the festive season and offer consolation to those experiencing loss. The episode also delves into the idea of dormancy, likening spiritual dormancy to the natural world's winter phase, where growth happens unseen. The conversation highlights the importance of creating space for mourning, acknowledging our vulnerabilities, and the need for faith and guidance during these seasons of grief and apparent inertness. Questions for Reflection: Where do you feel that you need to mourn? Have you had the guidance that you've needed for your mourning? And if not, how might you seek that out? Is there any place in your life right now that can be explained or given meaning through an understanding of dormancy? In this season of the Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership podcast, Ruth invites listeners to embark on a unique journey during Advent 2025. Departing from traditional liturgical approaches, we will focus on the overlap between the seasons of Advent and winter, inspired by Marilyn McIntyre's book 'Midwinter Light: Meditations for the Long Season.' Ruth will be joined all through Advent by Marilyn McIntyre, herself. Together they will explore themes such as inner reflection, the significance of silence, and the profound connections between spirituality and the physical season of winter. Marilyn McEntyre is an author of over 20 books, including Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies (2021) and Speaking Peace in a Climate of Conflict (2020). Her book, What's in a Phrase? Pausing Where Scripture Gives You Pause won the Christianity Today book award in spirituality. Midwinter Light, reflections on poems for the “long season,” has just been released. A former professor, now writer, writing coach, speaker, and retreat leader, her deepest interests lie in connections between spirituality, language, healing earth, and each other. She teaches regularly for programs at Western Seminary, New College Berkeley, and the Oblate School of Theology. Welcome to Restoring the Soul with Michael John Cusick. In this episode, Michael welcomes back Bette Dickinson to dig into the wisdom behind her new book, "The Art of Vine Making: Spiritual Flourishing in a Productivity Driven Culture." Together, they explore the rich metaphor of the vine and branches from John 15—not just as a theological concept, but as an intentional, relational process that mirrors the art of winemaking.Bette Dickinson shares the story of her friendship with a real-life vine dresser, drawing deep parallels between tending vineyards and the journey of spiritual formation. Listeners will discover how God's nurturing presence and attentive love invite us away from the relentless urge to be productive and towards true flourishing—where quality, process, rest, and relational attunement matter more than mere quantity or output.Through personal stories, practical contrasts between productivity and flourishing, and profound insights into seasons of dormancy and growth, this episode offers a compassionate, hope-filled vision for anyone longing to abide more deeply in God's love.ON THE WEB: bettedickinson.comSupport the showENGAGE THE RESTORING THE SOUL PODCAST:- Follow us on YouTube - Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Follow us on Instagram & Twitter- Follow Michael on Twitter- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.com Thanks for listening!
Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Path to a Happy and Healthy Life
Send one way text to Rev Rachel As we close out 2025, I want to invite you to take a gentle moment to recognize how much you've grown. When you're recovering from codependency, people-pleasing, and the habit of trying to manage everything around you, progress often shows up in quiet ways. A pause before reacting. A boundary you were once afraid to set. A moment of choosing peace over control. These shifts matter. They are the foundation of the Recover Your Soul Process. In this episode, we look back together at the small but powerful changes that shape an entirely new way of being. Whether you arrived here through Al-Anon, through a painful relationship pattern, or through a longing to feel more connected to yourself, I want you to see just how far you've already come.We talk about awakening, the year's energetic shifts, and why so many sensitive souls are feeling called to release old stories and step into deeper truth. You are not alone. You are part of something unfolding, and your healing is part of that greater transformation.Let this episode be a reminder: you are doing the work. You are waking up. Dana Micucci redefines danger for the modern lightworker not as external threat, but as the peril of spiritual bypassing and succumbing to fear or lower collective consciousness. Unlike 20th-century internal work, the 21st-century task is active internal mastery to hold and anchor high-frequency light amidst global chaos and intense energy shifts. This internal mastery is crucial for external impact. The Lesson in Mastery: From Seeking to Embodying Truth The memoir, a sequel to Sojourns of the Soul, marks a pivotal shift: the 'lesson in mastery' is moving from seeking truth externally (via sacred travel) to embodying that truth internally. This profound shift is the foundation for applying spiritual wisdom to complex modern life, validating the current memoir as an essential guide for the lightworker journey. Ma'at: Ancient Egyptian Wisdom for the Digital Age Micucci shares the powerful ancient Egyptian principle of Ma'at (truth, balance, and cosmic order), encountered at the sacred temples of Egypt. This ancient wisdom is surprisingly practical for navigating modern issues like misinformation and polarizing technology. Ma'at serves as a vital spiritual compass for filtering digital input by aligning words, thoughts, and actions with truth and balance. Essential Spiritual Tool: Conscious Breathwork For newcomers beginning their spiritual path, the single most essential spiritual tool is conscious, focused breathwork. This simple technique instantly interrupts the fearful, egoic mind, anchors the individual in the present, and connects them to their innate power and grace. The breath is highlighted as the most accessible bridge between mind, body, and spirit. Planetary Transformation: The Challenge and The Opportunity The current period of intense planetary transformation presents two key facets from a lightworker's view: Greatest Challenge: The temptation to disconnect or fall into despair amidst global crises. Greatest Opportunity: The unprecedented acceleration of soul evolution. The current evolutionary waves force humanity to confront shadows, offering a unique chance to rapidly ascend into higher consciousness and co-create the New Earth. Trusting the Higher Guiding Force Micucci shares how a personal test or transformation—a period of loss and uncertainty—revealed that apparent "breakdown" was the higher guiding force clearing old foundations. By embracing deep surrender, she recognized the timely appearance of support as confirmation that this force was conspiring on her behalf. The Final Action Step: Radical Self-Compassion The final, practical action step Micucci hopes readers take after finishing The Years of Living Dangerously is to practice radical self-forgiveness and self-compassion. Choosing to unconditionally love the self and silence the internal critic is deemed the most profound way to 'open their hearts to the evolutionary waves of change' and become a clear channel for light. #310 Category Creation | In this episode, Dave Gerhardt digs in with Josh Lowman, Founder & CEO of Gold Front, to unpack what “category creation” actually takes, why most companies get it wrong, and how the best brands win by owning a spot in the customer's mind. They get into the four real paths to category leadership, the trap of “fake” category design, why vibe and soul still beat spreadsheets, and how personal development quietly powers great marketing. In this episode, I sit down with vocalist, composer, and guitarist Becca Stevens for a conversation that moved me in ways I honestly wasn't expecting. We start with life right now for Becca: juggling touring, writing, teaching, and “momming” two little ones. She talks about how becoming a parent has completely reshaped her artistry, forcing a new level of efficiency, deepening her sense of purpose, and shifting her focus from serving herself to serving the song (and her kids). There's a beautiful thread here about how parenthood strips away the illusion that we are the most important thing, and how that shows up in her singing and writing. From there, we go back to the North Carolina School of the Arts, where everything really changed for her. Becca shares how she went from being the misunderstood “class clown” to finding her footing in an arts environment, discovering classical guitar almost by accident, and realizing that music alone was more than enough for a lifetime of exploration. We also talk about how jazz became her teenage rebellion, and how a wildly diverse listening palette—Bartók, Steve Reich, Joni Mitchell, Björk, and more still fuels her fearless tendency to never stay in one musical lane for long.Becca also takes us inside the creative process behind several key projects:The string quartet project with Attacca Quartet and the way those arrangements reshaped her own songsThe intimate, live-tracked world of Maple to Paper, where it had to be one guitar, one voice, and total honestyThe studio-crafted layers of Wonder Bloom, built from tiny seeds into full sonic collagesWe dig into her deep love of collaboration and what it's like to work with some truly legendary musicians, including Antonio Sánchez, Jacob Collier, Brad Mehldau, Scott Colley, and more. Becca talks about knowing when to serve someone else's vision and when to step in with her own ideas. Whether that's bringing original material to Antonio, layering vocals for Edward Simon, building a stop-motion fever dream with Jacob Collier for “Bathtub,” or stepping into Brad Mehldau's world as both a fan and a collaborator. One of the most powerful parts of this conversation centers around grief and Maple to Paper. I share how that album helped me process the loss of my dad—how it made me feel seen and validated in a way I hadn't been able to put into words. Becca opens up about losing her mom, the complicated nature of parent–child relationships, and how those songs began not as “an album” but as a survival mechanism. We talk about what it means to write from that place of raw honesty, to resist tying everything up with a pretty bow, and to allow music to carry both grief and gratitude at the same time.We close by talking about David Crosby and Becca's time in the Lighthouse Band with Michael League and Michelle Willis. Becca shares what it was like to work with him so late in his life, to feel both the shock of his passing and the sense that his voice is still very much present in her writing now. As a lifelong Crosby fan, I share my own experience of grieving someone I never met but felt incredibly connected to through his music—and how, watching those performances with the Lighthouse Band, it always looked to me like all the roads in his career led to that chapter. This is a conversation about artistry, parenthood, grief, joy, and the choice to follow authenticity over marketability—even when the “long, slow simmer” is the more challenging road. I'm so grateful Becca was willing to go this deep with me, and I can't wait for you to hear it.To stay in touch with Becca, visit her website.Music from the Episode:Be Still (Becca Stevens)Reminder (Becca Stevens & the Attaca Quartet)Cogs in Cogs, Part II - Song (Becca Stevens & Brad Mehldau)Maple to Paper (Becca Stevens)Thank you for listening. This week offers us an opportunity to embrace the most sensitive and transformative spiritual assignments we face: the fractures within our soul family. Through the lens of ancient Kabbalistic wisdom and real-life therapeutic insight, we dive into the deeper purpose behind the conflicts, estrangements, and emotional turbulence that arise in our closest relationships.Together, we examine why the most difficult people in our lives are often the very channels through which our greatest blessings are meant to flow—and how pushing them away can unintentionally cut us off from the light we're seeking. Our conversation uncovers a profound spiritual framework for understanding conflict, repair, and the divine design behind the relationships we're tempted to reject.Join us for the next episode of Weekly Energy Boost with @ElishevaBalas and special guest, @DrRachelGlik. 1 Peter 2:25 (NKJV)For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. This is one of those verses I write in my journal every time I come to it. There's a peace that settles over me when I am reminded He is the Shepherd and Overseer of my soul.I talked about my ER visit in the episode "Bright Spots," but when I came to this verse, I noticed even more of the ways God had been caring for me. I also tell the story of the perfectly-timed letter. It was one of those unmistakable reminders of God's kindness and how He often shepherds us through the timely obedience of others. We'll look briefly at the simple needs of sheep (including their daily need for water) and how it points us back to Jesus' invitation to come to Him for living water. Maybe you're like me and need those reminders again and again.I'll end with the song, “Where He Restores.”If you would like to support this podcast with a monthly or one-time gift, thank you!https://www.sherriyoungward.com/supportTo find out about upcoming gatherings and new projects, please join my email list at www.sherriyoungward.com
In this episode of Ask and Answered by Soul, Jennifer sits down with Shawneen Quinn—psychotherapist, spiritual development mentor, and creator of The Starlight Method, a modality that blends psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, and multidimensional healing. Together, they explore one of the most essential truths of the spiritual journey: awakening always leads us back to our inherent worthiness. Shawneen shares how her own awakening revealed a lifelong theme of believing she had to earn love, and how reconnecting with her Soul taught her that worthiness is not achieved — it's remembered. They dive into: How to access the love within by grounding into nature and consciously “plugging back into Source.” A gentle heart-centered practice for acknowledging the inner child and easing fear with compassion. The distinction between denying a part of ourselves and inviting our divinity to lead. Why people-pleasing often signals an unhealed worthiness wound. What it means to navigate a rapidly shifting, awakening planet — and how to stay rooted in both humanity and divinity. The simple, powerful question: “What part of me am I denying right now?” Shawneen leaves us with a beautiful reminder:You were always worthy. You never had to earn your right to be loved. Every one of us has been given three powerful servants. You can ignore them but you can't get rid of them entirely. They were never meant to be our masters. They were meant to minister to you and serve you. Yet in many Christian lives they have staged a rebellion and now sit on the throne that belongs to Christ alone. In this podcast you'll learn three key areas of life that we all must learn to govern well.

In this week's episode of The Temple of Surf Podcast, we sit down with one of the most quietly influential craftsmen in modern surfing: Ian Byrne, master surfboard shaper, designer, and the visionary behind some of the equipment trusted by surfers around the world. Known for his deep respect for tradition and his relentless drive to refine the feel of a surfboard under the feet of everyday surfers, Ian has built a career grounded in precision, humility, and an authentic love for the craft. Across our conversation, Ian takes us on a journey from his early days learning the fundamentals of shaping to his evolution into a respected figure in the shaping community. He shares insights into what truly defines a great board, the fine balance between performance and accessibility, and why every board, whether a high-performance shortboard or a playful twin carries the imprint of the surfer it's made for. We explore the shaping philosophies that guide his work today: the importance of hand-foiling, the role of intuition, and the ongoing dance between tradition and technological advancement. Ian reflects on the lessons learned from years spent in shaping bays around the world, and how various coastlines, breaks, and surf cultures have influenced his approach to design. He also dives into sustainability, discussing how shapers can push toward more responsible materials and smarter production processes, without compromising quality or performance. For those fascinated by surfboard design, this episode offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a shaper who deeply understands how subtle changes, a rail tucked a little differently, a fin placement adjusted a few millimeters, a rocker line re-imagined can transform an entire surfing experience. For surfers simply looking to better connect with their equipment, Ian offers thoughtful guidance on how to choose the right board, how to communicate with your shaper, and what it really means to find a board that "matches your surfing." We also speak about the current state of the surf industry: the pressures on hand shapers, the impact of machine shaping, and the rise of boutique brands that are pushing creativity forward. Ian's perspective is refreshingly grounded — honoring the past, embracing the present, and remaining optimistic about the future of surf craft. Whether you're a seasoned surfer, a board collector, a design nerd, or someone discovering the beauty of surf craft for the first time, Ian Byrne's story is a reminder that behind every great wave ridden, there is a board and behind every great board, there is a shaper with passion, patience, and a willingness to chase perfection one curve at a time. Tune in to hear a conversation that celebrates craftsmanship, creativity, and the timeless relationship between surfer and shaper. Another inspiring episode from The Temple of Surf.

“Neuroscientists who stand up and say ‘we have souls' are few and far between,” says pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Egnor.“But when you look carefully at the neuroscience—the best neuroscience over the past century—it clearly points to the existence of the soul and to the existence of aspects of our mind that don't come from the brain.”Egnor himself started off as a materialist and atheist. But 40 years and more than 7,000 brain surgeries later, he concluded that reason and free will do not reside in the brain. In this episode, he reveals what he's found.“Neuroscience is just fundamentally wrong in a lot of ways … because of the materialist bias in neuroscience. We can't get away from this machine analogy, [but] we're not machines, and we don't work like machines work. And there's overwhelming evidence in neuroscience for the existence of a soul,” he says.Dr. Egnor is a professor of neurosurgery and pediatrics at Stony Brook University, a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, and the co-author of the book “The Immortal Mind: A Neurosurgeon's Case for the Existence of the Soul.”Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.
On the banks of the Brahmaputra River, a remote village in northern Bangladesh serves as a sanctuary for the hijra (transgender) community, a once-revered but now persecuted group. In March 2024, a mosque built by and for hijras offered a rare haven for worship without fear. After the August 2024 protests that toppled the secular government, a surge in religious extremism has fueled renewed violence against minorities, including the hijra community. Their mosque, once a beacon of hope and inclusivity, now faces significant threats. Reporter Sahar Zand gains rare access to this embattled community, following their leader, Tanu Hijra Guru, who fights tirelessly for the women she calls her daughters. Outside the village, Sahar witnesses the harsh realities of survival - begging, beatings, prostitution - and speaks to hijras forced to live as men under family pressure. This episode of The Documentary, comes to you from Heart and Soul, exploring personal approaches to spirituality from around the world
Dave is joined by chef, food truck lifer, yakitori operator, and SNIBBS co-founder Daniel Shemtob for a run through hearts, food trucks, and what actually keeps you upright on a greasy kitchen floor. They start with skewers and offal: chicken hearts vs duck and beef heart, a Korean beef-heart “Heart & Soul” taco, tortilla engineering, and why overstuffed tacos are a design flaw. From there it's boiled peanuts, peanut butter nerdery, uncooked cranberry “relish” with horseradish, Thanksgiving recaps from LA, Milwaukee, and beyond, plus British Columbia saffron versus Iranian saffron and how Persian techniques layer saffron, rosewater, and pistachio. Quinn and Dave get into extraction temperatures for mushrooms and saffron, raising kids to eat more than grilled cheese, and where dishes like tofu stroganoff and meat-free mapo tofu do (and don't) earn the original name. In the back half, Daniel breaks down what 15 years on The Lime Truck have really taught him: why most of the money is in catering, how to design menus that can scale up and down, and how easy it is to gross big numbers and still make almost nothing if you don't control labor and food costs. He also walks through the origin of SNIBBS—his own career-changing slip-and-fall, working with an orthopedic surgeon, why chefs need firm soles and a small but real heel drop, and how he ended up building a chef-driven shoe brand backed by people like Nancy Silverton, Andrew Zimmern, and Michael Voltaggio. In this conversation, Stewart Alsop sits down with Ken Lowry to explore a wide sweep of themes running through Christianity, Protestant vs. Catholic vs. Orthodox traditions, the nature of spirits and telos, theosis and enlightenment, information technology, identity, privacy, sexuality, the New Age “Rainbow Bridge,” paganism, Buddhism, Vedanta, and the unfolding meaning crisis; listeners who want to follow more of Ken's work can find him on his YouTube channel Climbing Mount Sophia and on Twitter under KenLowry8.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:00 Christianity's tangled history surfaces as Stewart Alsop and Ken Lowry unpack Luther, indulgences, mediation, and the printing-press information shift.05:00 Luther's encounters with the devil lead into talk of perception, hallucination, and spiritual influence on “main-character” lives.10:00 Protestant vs. Catholic vs. Orthodox worship styles highlight telos, Eucharist, liturgy, embodiment, and teaching as information.15:00 The Church as a living spirit emerges, tied to hierarchy, purpose, and Michael Levin's bioelectric patterns shaping form.20:00 Spirits, goals, Dodgers-as-spirit, and Christ as the highest ordering spirit frame meaning and participation.25:00 Identity, self, soul, privacy, intimacy, and the internet's collapse of boundaries reshape inner life.30:00 New Age, Rainbow Bridge, Hawkins' calibration, truth-testing, and spiritual discernment enter the story.35:00 Stewart's path back to Christianity opens discussion of enlightenment, Protestant legalism, Orthodox theosis, and healing.40:00 Emptiness, relationality, Trinity, and personhood bridge Buddhism and mystical Christianity.45:00 Suffering, desire, higher spirits, and orientation toward the real sharpen the contrast between simulation and reality.50:00 Technology, bodies, AI, and simulated worlds raise questions of telos, meaning, and modern escape.55:00 Neo-paganism, Hindu hierarchy of gods, Vedanta, and the need for a personal God lead toward Jesus as historical revelation.01:00:00 Buddha, enlightenment, theosis, the post-1945 world, Hitler as negative pole, and goodness as purpose close the inquiry.Key InsightsMediation and information shape the Church. Ken Lowry highlights how the printing press didn't just spread ideas—it restructured Christian life by shifting mediation. Once information became accessible, individuals became the “interface” with Christ, fundamentally changing Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox trajectories and the modern crisis of religious choice. The Protestant–Catholic–Orthodox split hinges on telos. Protestantism orients the service around teaching and information, while Catholic and Orthodox traditions culminate in the Eucharist, embodiment, and liturgy. This difference expresses two visions of what humans are doing in church: receiving ideas or participating in a transformative ritual that shapes the whole person.Spirits, telos, and hierarchy offer a map of reality. Ken frames spirits as real intelligible goals that pull people into coordinated action—seen as clearly in a baseball team as in a nation. Christ is the highest spirit because aiming toward Him properly orders all lower goals, giving a coherent vertical structure to meaning.Identity, privacy, and intimacy have transformed under the internet. The shift from soul → self → identity tracks changes in information technology. The internet collapses boundaries, creating unprecedented exposure while weakening the inherent privacy of intimate realities such as genuine lovemaking, which Ken argues can't be made public without destroying its nature.New Age influences and Hawkins' calibration reflect a search for truth. Stewart's encounters with the Rainbow Bridge world, David Hawkins' muscle-testing epistemology, and the escape from scientistic secularism reveal a cultural hunger for spiritual discernment in the absence of shared metaphysical grounding.Enlightenment and theosis may be the same mountain. Ken suggests that Buddhist enlightenment and Orthodox theosis aim at the same transformative reality: full communion with what is most real. The difference lies in Jesus as the concrete, personal revelation of God, offering a relational path rather than pure negation or emptiness.Secularism is shaped by powerfully negative telos. Ken argues that the modern world orients itself not toward the Good revealed in Christ but away from the Evil revealed in Hitler. Moving away from evil as a primary aim produces confusion, because only a positive vision of the Good can order desires, technology, suffering, and the overwhelming power of modern simulations.
