This week is a bit of a tour de Lachlan de force you could call it, as Tully and Grace get to learn all about flags right on the air because Lachlan did too much research!Flags are used by every country and by countless other groups as a symbol of their strength and unity, but why? It's another week of recording at home, and an edit shipped off to a fan with far more RAM than us (thanks Brooke). When we think of plagues, the black death is surely the most iconic (and terrifying) example. This week, Tully gets right into the nuts and bolts of how to build a disease for optimal virulence. We check out symptoms, systems, and modes of transmission, before breaking into some fictional and real examples. Then Lachlan talks about the realities of plague life. We go into the social heartbreak that the plague brought with it, why it might not be the culprit we think it is, and mistake fiction for reality with the Masque of the Red Death. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not help but wonder what that meant for my world! This week, we sadly bid farewell to Danae, but soldier on to ask "what's the deal with roads?". Lachlan takes a look at the distances a historical citizen may have travelled, and the answer may surprise you... Or it may not. You won't know until you've listened. Then Tully explores the art of road construction, and what that could mean for your travel. Dungeons and Dragons has become one of the world's favourite fantasy tabletop games, and with the advent of fifth edition it quickly skyrocketed into the public eye. So what could there be to complain about? LOTS! In this episode, Lachlan and Tully go through some of their gripes from D&D 5e. First we take a look at Wild Magic, and ways to make it WILDER! Then we look at monks, and we think they should be MONKIER! Then, we look at indefinite madness, and we make it... more accurately representative of real psychoses, rather than simply negative personality traits.Don't forget to find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @dungeondeepdive, or email us at deepdivetnc@gmail.com to let us know what you want to see! For as long as we can remember, people have been obsessed with finding out what lies on the road ahead. From the oracle at Delphi, to that strange lady who told me I was destined to fall under a terrible curse while I walked to recording, the methods and deliveries of these predictions vary wildly. This week, Lachlan takes us on a ride through the historical reliance on divination for momentous and everyday decisions! Then, Tully and Danae take on some practical divination to tell our own futures. From tarot to tea leaves, and from runes to runny eggs, this one's a wild ride.Don't forget to find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @dungeondeepdive, or email us at deepdivetnc@gmail.com to let us know what you want to see!Subscribe to the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, or any other podcatcher of choice. This week on Dungeon Deep Dive we search for answers among the stars. We've all heard about the denial of science throughout history, but what would people actually know? Would a medieval world understand the stars, and what would they do if they did? We answer these questions and more as we break down the state of astronomy in the middle ages and how it was used. So cast your eyes towards the heavens and settle in as Lachlan, Danae and Tully discuss astronomy.Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.
Danae, Lachlan, and Tully get in touch with their scholarly roots once more! Journeying through what makes a library, what comes from censorship, and even a study of the Great Library of Alexandria, we explore the how and why of libraries in your world. How do we categorise the knowledge in our world? Where do we keep the lore of the universe? Can you really have fun with nothing but a library card? Every fantasy world has libraries, whether they're a convenient plot device, or a setting to build a much larger world. Where would we store our books if not for them? We go for a journey around what makes a historical library, and then delve into how they gain or lose knowledge. Then we even broach the tough topic of censorship. This week the team at Dungeon Deep Dive gets morbid, as they explore all things vampire. Get ready for death, disease, and devils! The vampire has long been a mythological staple around the world, with different interpretations in every corner of the world. This creature has been buried in the human psyche to play on all of our worst fears. From the plagues of the middle ages, through revolutions against power, to that cursed concept of private property, vampires have always been there to take the fall. But do we really understand these pallid, blood-sucking nightmares? We explore how they have played on the depths of our collective fears, how the imagery is linked to disease, and even why they care so much about counting. Enjoy our ramblings on how to bring vampires into your games.Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.
This week the Dungeon Deep Drive gang dives on into the aquatic world of mermaids to really find out what they’d be like, look like and… love like. For as long as people have taken to the sea there have been stories about the creatures that live out there, from malevolent behemoths in the deep to mischievous aquatic spirits. However, no myth has quite captured the attention of humanity quite like mermaids. From tales of sailors drowned by sinister sirens, to tales of beautiful maidens just waiting to explore the land above, mermaid stories explore the different dichotomies (such as man and woman, or human and nature) that have existed in various societies throughout history. In order to really understand what mermaids are and what they represent, we look into the attitudes towards, stories about and some of the differences between us and our deep-sea counterparts. We even suggest a story hook using different elements of mermaid mythos, sociology and aquatic biology to create the foundation of a believable mermaid encounter for all your story-telling needs. It’s a bit of a long one this week! The audio got a little funky at this session, so we decided to treat you to Tully’s extended (but skippable!) takes on different zoological classes of mermaid to apologise. The audio will be back to normal soon, and we hope you enjoy all the same in the meantime!Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.

What is breakfast? Is it important? What's in it? These are just some of the important questions we'll explore as Lachlan and Tully tackle the studio on their own. It's amazing what you can get into with something as simple as a morning meal.Let the smell of a hot breakfast float you out of bed and right down to this week's episode of Dungeon Deep Dive! Left alone in the studio, Lachlan and Tully get into the weirdly controversial opinions towards breakfast in history, before getting into what the heck even counts AS breakfast? After getting into the history, we look at all the ways to make something as mundane as breakfast as interesting as possible in your story. Finally, we help design a quest where the end of breakfast may just have devastating consequences... This week on Dungeon Deep Dive, we spill the beans (or the froth all over your pants, if you're Danaë) on how to accurately and interestingly include breweries and alcohol of all kinds in your worldbuilding. If you like mead, beer, Bacchus, drunken revelry, drinking horns or blue honey, then you're going to love this episode. This week on Dungeon Deep Dive, we spill the beans (or the froth all over your pants, if you're Danaë) on how to accurately and interestingly include breweries and alcohol of all kinds in your worldbuilding. Everyone knows that one bard who's always roaring drunk, or that rogue who sulks in the shadows of every tavern with a goblet in hand. Keep your players on their toes with our help, as we explore the LIT history of humanity and our perpetual drinking problem, before turning to common brewery features and set-ups you might encounter in your own world. Then we'll demonstrate a boozy encounter of our own, complete with a new blue mead that's causing the villagers to disappear from town...right after we crack open some honey mead to try ourselves, of course. Sit back and relax with your drink of choice (unless you're driving of course!) and get ready to deep dive into every Australian's favourite pastime...alcohol.Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.
