Martha S. Jones grew up feeling her Black identity was obvious to all who saw her. But weeks into college, a Black Studies classmate challenged Jones's right to speak. Suspicious of the color of her skin and the texture of her hair, he confronted her with a question that inspired a lifetime of introspection: “Who do you think you are?” Now a prizewinning scholar of Black history, Jones delves into her family's past for answers. In every generation since her great-great-great-grandmother survived enslavement to raise a free family, color determined her ancestors' lives. But the color line was shifting and jagged, not fixed and straight. Some backed away from it, others skipped along it, and others still were cut deep by its sharp teeth. Journeying across centuries, from rural Kentucky and small-town North Carolina to New York City and its suburbs, The Trouble of Color: An American Family Memoir (Basic Books, 2025) is a lyrical, deeply felt meditation on the most fundamental matters of identity, belonging, and family. Martha S. Jones is the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor, professor of history, and a professor at the SNF Agora Institute at the Johns Hopkins University. A prizewinning author and editor of four books, most recently Vanguard, she is past copresident of the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians and has contributed to the New York Times, Atlantic, and many other publications. The time in the wilderness was simply the time from the promise being given, to the time the promise was fulfilled.Today's Foundation: One of the reasons for the journey, is for us to learn to worship God.
These days, large-scale high-production music festivals take over major cities and regularly attract crowds of every genre — including the current version of Lollapalooza that draws a casual 400,000 people to its resident Chicago stomping grounds. But kick it back a few decades and this kind of maximalist mega-show wasn't quite the norm it is now, especially for musical tastes outside of the mainstream. In their second collaborative book, Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock's Wildest Festival, music journalists Richard Bienstock and Tom Beaujour flash back to when the Lollapalooza we know now was a new tour concept bringing 1990s alternative artists and ideas center stage. Lollapalooza first transports readers back to the festival's origins – a 20+ city summer sprawl highlighting alternative music, art, and counterculture, conceived by Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band Jane's Addiction. From 1991-1997, this breakthrough tour shifted the scope of live music experiences and helped forge a new path for the decade's subcultures to reach the masses and the media. Bienstock and Beaujour have compiled hundreds of new interviews to dig into the dirt of how the historic festival came into being at every level – from headlining artists and record label execs to tour organizers and promoters to freakshow performers, stage crews, and roadies. Lollapalooza is packed with gritty details of an era of shows that defied genres and drew crowds across style lines. Music, art, and politics drawing from alt-rock, goth, industrial, metal, punk, hip-hop, EDM, and avant-garde explorations – all coming together under one big tent. Featuring original interviews with iconic artists like Green Day, Patti Smith, Rage Against the Machine, Ice-T, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Metallica, and many more, this collection amplifies voices that helped shape generations of contemporary thinkers, creative activists, and live music audiences. Journeying through 90s nostalgia, uncensored first-hand accounts, and the long-term reverberations of a groundbreaking tour, Bienstock and Beaujour document a high-impact chapter of modern American music. A VIP pass to the action onstage and backstage, on the road and behind the scenes – Lollapalooza details the cultural shift of the alternative rock revolution and the echoes still heard through concert crowds today. Richard Bienstock is a journalist, musician, and author whose work has been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Spin. He is the executive editor of Guitar Aficionado magazine and former senior editor of Guitar World and has authored and co-authored books including Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Slash: An Intimate Portrait. Tom Beaujour is a journalist, music producer, and engineer who has been featured in television shows like Orange is the New Black, A Handmaid's Tale, and Criminal Minds. He is a co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Revolver and has contributed to Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Blender, and Billboard. He is the co-author of Nöthin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosion, alongside Richard Bienstock. Mike Squires is a Seattle-based touring musician and the host of Couch Riffs Podcast since 2019. His touring and recording credits include Duff McKagan, Peter Hook, Ugly Kid Joe, Harvey Danger, and The Long Winters. The time in the wilderness was simply the time from the promise being given, to the time the promise was fulfilled.Foundations we've learned:First: Know what your promise is! You won't withstand the wilderness if you don't know what promise ahead is.Second: Be willing to step into the journey to the promise.Third: We need the power of the blood of Jesus over our lives, in order to step into the journey to our promise.Fourth: Crisis can actually be the catalyst that drives us towards our promise.“Got to Remember that the desert is an opportunity for miracles”John James

This week, we continue our Lent series, Journeying with Jesus, by turning to what is often called the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Pastor Joe offers that this text is more for religious folk, and could be named, as others have suggested, the Parable of the Elder Son or the Parable of the Forgiving Father. Check out how this text encourages us into resistance through this season of Lent.
Often we find ourselves feeling like we are in a wilderness. Wandering, without seeing the promise. In crisis. Feel blahThe time in the wilderness was simply the time from the promise being given, to the time the promise was fulfilled.
Sermon given by Emily Alty on Sunday the 30th of March 2025.
This week, our Director of Discipleship and Care, Brian Fu, continues our Lent Journey with Jesus by challenging us to understand repentance and resistance as a turning our face to God and to one another.
The crucifixion stands as history's ultimate demonstration of sacrificial love—a moment when the sinless Son of God willingly suffered what was rightfully ours to give us what could never be ours through our own efforts.Journeying through the religious and political trials Jesus endured reveals a profound truth: the Creator of the universe stood silent before His accusers, accepting false charges, mockery, and brutal treatment that our sin deserved. Though declared innocent multiple times by both Pilate and Herod, the crowd demanded His crucifixion instead of Barabbas, an actual insurrectionist and murderer—a powerful picture of the substitution at the heart of our salvation. This "great exchange" offers believers five extraordinary gifts purchased at the cross. Through expiation, our sin is completely removed, liberating us from crushing guilt and shame. Through propitiation, God's righteous anger toward sin is fully satisfied, assuring us that no sin is too grievous to be forgiven. Through justification, we're declared righteous despite our imperfections, giving us a fresh start not just once but daily. Through reconciliation, we're brought back into relationship with the Father we ran from, providing the family connection our hearts crave. Through imputation, we're clothed in Christ's perfection, addressing our deepest feelings of inadequacy. These aren't theological abstractions but practical, life-changing realities available to anyone who comes with empty hands and an open heart. Whatever your struggle today—whether shame over past mistakes, doubt about God's forgiveness, need for a fresh start, longing for family, or feelings of never measuring up—the cross offers precisely what you need. Will you reach out and receive what Jesus suffered so greatly to give you? If you want to learn more about the MidTree story or connect with us, go to our website HERE or text us at 812-MID-TREE.
Our Creator God is true north. The primary landmark that we should always be able to see is, “I am created body and spirit. Wonderfully and fearfully made! Finally, alignment with our community brings us full circle in our life. Physical drives and desires can't be “running the show.” The human spirit cannot be in denial of the life of one's body. Healthy self-awareness is to live in harmony with one's total self - body & spirit. These alignments are the source of immunity to a life of deceiving others through out own self-deception. Alignment is wholeness in our community and world. Scriptures include Hebrews 11:1-3, 6; 2Thessalonians 5:23-24; 1Peter 2:11-12; 2Timothy 3:1-15; and James 2:26.Support the showTonyKafka on Patreon

This is an encore presentation of a previous episode, originally airing in August 2023. --- The two sounds Tommy Prine says he remembers most growing up were having the AM radio on or his father (renowned singer/songwriter John Prine) workshopping tunes at the kitchen table. Journeying through adolescence, his eclecticism later manifested through acts like Outkast and System of a Down. But now, on the heels of This Far South — his debut album — Tommy has found his own unique voice that marries his mom's Irish wisdom and his dad's dry Midwestern/Southern wit. On today's show, Tommy shares why Radiohead's “Videotape” speaks to him, his experiences working with Nashville talents Ruston Kelly and Gena Johnson on This Far South, and how the artwork for this album feels like both an ending and a beginning. San Francisco author Brittany Newell's novel “Soft Core” explores the city's underbelly — while making its tech bros minor characters. With pinpoint descriptions of the sweat on a west-bound Muni in October, the ceiling of the sometimes-cool, sometimes-not Makeout Room and the vinyl seats of the now-shuttered Silver Crest Diner, Newell writes of the city as lived by her protagonist, a stripper and dominatrix. And she pushes back on the negative narratives of the city she loves, drawing from San Francisco's rich history of sex and love to argue the city's not dead — and not just for the very rich. She joins us to share her San Francisco and to hear yours. Guest: Brittany Newell, writer and performer living in San Francisco, author of the new novel, “Soft Core”

I love stories of the sea, the tales of ships caught in perilous gales and the human fight for survival amidst the storm. In our reading today, we encountered one such story with Paul on his tumultuous journey to Rome, a tale etched into the annals of struggle and divine providence. But more than just an adventure on the sea, it draws profound parallels with our own life journeys. The scripture brings to mind another maritime story from the Bible, the story of Jonah. Jonah knew that the storm besieging the ship was of his own making, declaring to those around him, "Throw me into the sea, and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault." Jonah surrendered himself to the waves for the salvation of those onboard. But then, one greater than Jonah came. Jesus spoke of himself in this way, marking a divine revelation—greater than Jonah is here! Jesus was speaking of the ultimate storm, the tempest of life that no human escapes. And unlike Jonah, Jesus willingly threw himself into the storm of death, sinking into the depths for our deliverance and redemption. He's the one who calms the seas not just around us, but within us. Fear not, for even in the depths where many of us have sunk, Jesus meets us there. He stands amidst the waves, ensuring us we do not face them alone. The waters of life may be turbulent, but he is with us always. When I face storms, those moments where life's seas rage, may I remember the greater Jonah who has conquered the storm on my behalf, and trust him to navigate my way safely through. That's the prayer I hold dear for my own soul, my family—my wife, daughters, and son—and that's the prayer that I have for you, dear listener. May the steadfast presence of our savior, the one who sank into the worst storm of all, be your assurance and peace. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. Today is January 24th, 2025, and as always, your hosts Hunter and Heather are here to guide you through an inspiring journey into God's Word. In today's episode, we delve into the transformative power of scripture, focusing on the tenth and eleventh chapters of Exodus. We witness the relentlessness of Pharaoh's hardened heart amidst God's powerful plagues upon Egypt, highlighting God's sovereignty and the distinct destiny of the Israelites. Then we transition to Luke's Gospel, where we walk alongside the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Their deep despair is turned to joy as the risen Christ opens their eyes to the truth of the scriptures and rekindles their hope. Hunter shares a touching reflection on how Jesus accompanies us, even in our moments of brokenness and disappointment, gradually revealing His presence and love. Join us as we seek to have our hearts and minds opened to the life-changing love of Jesus through prayer and reflection. Let this episode be a reminder that, no matter where our journey takes us, we are never alone. So, let's dive into the Word and be reminded of God's unwavering love and presence. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jesus meets these 2 men on the way to a little town outside of Jerusalem. It's a 7 mile walk, and the town is called Emmaus. Their hearts are dejected, their hopes and aspirations dashed, they're broken. Having followed Jesus through his ministry, they had hoped that he was the Messiah. They had seen many of his miraculous signs, and they were overcome by his amazing teaching and thought, this could be it. This might be the man. Yet, 3 days prior, they had seen that man that they had pinned all their hopes on crucified. Now, the story that they hoped for had come to an end, or so they thought. But it's here at this moment, when their hearts are at their darkest and their hopes are most broken, that Jesus shows up. He's veiled to them, but eventually, he's going to unveil himself and show them who he really is. At this point, veiled Jesus reminds them of some things they should have known, things they should have seen. Luke writes this in verse 25 and 26. Then Jesus said to them, you foolish people, You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the scriptures. Wasn't it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before He entered His glory? And then he, the stranger on the road, begins to take them through the writings of Moses and the prophets, and he explains from the scriptures what they should have been able to see. There are things that we should be able to see that Jesus can reveal to us. Luke says he took them through the scriptures concerning himself. He explains who the Messiah is. He's offering them a way, a way of seeing. Seeing things that they should have been able to see. Things about God. Things about themselves. Things about love. He is showing them that he is the way, That we begin to regain our sight. To see what is true about ourselves, about God, about the world, about what is true. We're all on a journey. These 2 are on a journey to Emmaus, and they're trying to talk their way clear on this profound disappointment in their life. They're disappointed with what they believe to be true. They're disappointed that God didn't somehow change the circumstances, that Jesus didn't meet their expectations. They're disappointed with the world and the way it is. They're disappointed with themselves, no doubt. They had hoped for something, and they thought that hope had let them down. Maybe you are on your own journey to Emmaus. Or maybe you know what that's like. Maybe you are disappointed. Disappointed that God didn't come through the way you thought he would, that things haven't worked out. Maybe you're disappointed with yourself. Maybe you had hopes that didn't plan out. But maybe today, we can pay close attention and see the way that Jesus is inviting us to see. Maybe today, we can pay close attention to the presence of God with us. He might be unrecognizable at first, but maybe we can pay special attention and listen to him. If we do, he will often open up the scriptures to help us to see things that we should have seen all along. Maybe he will reveal himself in the breaking of bread, and you'll see that he has been with you through it all. Even the disappointments, the hopes unrealized. Maybe if we keep listening and walking, we'll discover his way of seeing. Seeing the world. Seeing ourselves. Seeing our neighbors. Seeing all things through love. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity.
