Journeying through large swaths of the Jewish world of the 18th century, Rav Chaim Yosef David Azulai (1724-1806), known by his acronym the Chida, was privy to the broad range of the various Jewish communities across Europe and North Africa, as well as observing the happenings within each community as an objective observer. He recorded his impressions of his travels, which remains an invaluable historical document, produced by one of the greatest Torah scholars in recent centuries. As a world class Torah scholar who served as a fundraiser on behalf of the Sephardic Old Yishuv of the Land of Israel, the Chida spent the majority of his life on the road, eventually settling in Livorno, Italy, where he served as rabbi until his passing. Send us a textToday's episode is officially our second non fiction / memoir that we're reviewing on the podcast and a follow up to our “books that made us” series covering our college years. Ashley and Liz both presented five of the books that helped shape our personalities as early 20-something's in the world, put all the titles into our trusted BATB beanie™, and then chose one to reread. The result: us covering Wild, the super popular story of Cheryl Strayed solo hiking 1200 miles of California's Pacific Crest Trail with no prior backpacking experience as her way of processing her mother's sudden death. This was Ashley's first time on this journey, and Liz's second. Follow along as we rate and review the story, writing quality and style, explore the author's background and purpose in writing a memoir, delve into whether we think their story warranted an entire book dedicated to their journey, if it met our expectations, and if we connected with any of the themes on a personal level. We discuss high and low reviews, its popularity, the audiobook and movie adaptations, and if we think it deserves the hype. And we also make sure to bring a fave and fail outdoor edition, and a smash or pass PCT / Lincoln commercial edition. Watch the Books That Made Us Playlist! | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t6T0pPbgkc&list=PLHf5v0KOoZMlj_YBqZCxmyIZi8Idv0mkI&pp=gAQBWatch the Farenheit 182 Mark Hoppus of blink 182 Memoir | https://youtu.be/NXoRDLDg_iA?si=nDCV8-Pb9lvEowgX Don't be shy, subscribe! Engage with scripture readings, heartfelt devotionals, and collective prayers that draw you into the heart of God's love. Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible! On this May 25th, join Heather as we gather together on day 145 of our journey through the scriptures. Today's episode takes us through the grandeur and wisdom of King Solomon—his unforgettable encounter with the Queen of Sheba, the height of his wealth, and ultimately, the choices that turned his heart away from God. Our readings span 1 Kings 10–11, 2 Chronicles 9, and culminate in Romans 6, where we're reminded of the freedom found in Christ and the call to live as new creations, no longer slaves to sin. Together, let's seek the illumination of the Holy Spirit, warm our hearts by the fire of God's love, and remember: you are deeply loved. Grab your Bible and join us as Heather leads us in scripture, reflection, and prayer—right here on the Daily Radio Bible. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Well, now you are free. Did you hear Paul clearly say it? In Romans 6:22, he declares, "Now you are free." Free from the power of sin. And yet, as Paul says, you have become a slave—not to sin, but to God. United to him by the work of Christ, because of what Christ has done for us, because of the Spirit of Christ that now dwells in us, empowering us, awakening us to who we truly are in Jesus. We become a new creation, a new person, a free person, no longer a slave to sin, no longer imprisoned by our past, by those inclinations and habits that once held us so tightly. We are free. This freedom is not just a concept, but a living reality that we are called to inhabit. We can learn, perhaps slowly, day by day, to live into the truth of our freedom, to exercise our freedom to be what we now are—a person rooted in God's love, a person set apart to live for him. That is the journey and the invitation of discipleship. It begins with the truth: our union with God, this new reality accomplished by Christ and now alive within us. We are free—absolutely, eternally, irrevocably free. Free to live as God has always intended for us, in him, forever. May we see ourselves as we truly are—no longer defined by our sin, but by his glory and grace. Free to love, free to serve, free to live lives marked by the fruit of the Spirit. This is the good news. This is our call and our strength for today. That's a prayer I have for my own heart, for my family, and for you. May we embrace this new life and walk in the freedom Christ has purchased for us. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord, God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day. Preserve us with your mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you. Bring the nations into your fold. Pour out your spirit on all flesh and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And now, Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, joy. O Lord, grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned. It is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. There are many ways we try to heal. Therapy, meditation, breathwork, movement, and mindset work - just to name a few.  These paths are powerful, transformative, and often life-changing. But sometimes, despite all the tools and effort, there are places within us that remain untouched, places our intellect can't quite reach. We're exploring one such threshold, where healing stops being something we do and becomes something that happens to us at a cellular level.  Where transformation drops from the head into the body through the quiet, mystical intelligence of mushrooms. Journeying with and surrendering to mushrooms isn't an escape from reality, but rather a deeper entry into it. That's what we've experienced.  In this episode, we share our personal experiences with psilocybin (aka “journey mushrooms”) in a candid, responsible, and deeply moving conversation about transformation, play, healing, and the way wisdom often arrives when we least expect it.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Change doesn't have to be hard We've been told transformation is painful and slow. But what if that's just an old story? What if mushrooms and nature itself could teach us to let go of suffering and embrace ease? -How to love your body in a completely new way From gratitude for ankle bones to releasing years of shame, how can psychedelic journeys help us rewrite our relationships with our bodies in the most unexpected way? -What do you know that you don't know you know Could someone else take a substance and access wisdom from your life? Are we all more connected than we realize?  -From comparison to inner clarity How can a conversation with a pear tree (yes, really) teach us to stop trying to be something we're not and embrace the beauty of who we already are?   About Your Hosts Katie Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT, is a pioneer in body intelligence and conscious loving with over 40 years of experience. Martha S. Jones grew up feeling her Black identity was obvious to all who saw her. But weeks into college, a Black Studies classmate challenged Jones's right to speak. Suspicious of the color of her skin and the texture of her hair, he confronted her with a question that inspired a lifetime of introspection: “Who do you think you are?” Now a prizewinning scholar of Black history, Jones delves into her family's past for answers. In every generation since her great-great-great-grandmother survived enslavement to raise a free family, color determined her ancestors' lives. But the color line was shifting and jagged, not fixed and straight. Some backed away from it, others skipped along it, and others still were cut deep by its sharp teeth. Journeying across centuries, from rural Kentucky and small-town North Carolina to New York City and its suburbs, The Trouble of Color: An American Family Memoir (Basic Books, 2025) is a lyrical, deeply felt meditation on the most fundamental matters of identity, belonging, and family. Martha S. Jones is the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor, professor of history, and a professor at the SNF Agora Institute at the Johns Hopkins University. A prizewinning author and editor of four books, most recently Vanguard, she is past copresident of the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians and has contributed to the New York Times, Atlantic, and many other publications. She lives in Baltimore, Maryland. Reighan Gillam is Associate Professor in the Department of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College. Her research examines the ways in which Afro-Brazilian media producers foment anti-racist visual politics through their image creation. These days, large-scale high-production music festivals take over major cities and regularly attract crowds of every genre — including the current version of Lollapalooza that draws a casual 400,000 people to its resident Chicago stomping grounds. But kick it back a few decades and this kind of maximalist mega-show wasn't quite the norm it is now, especially for musical tastes outside of the mainstream. In their second collaborative book, Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock's Wildest Festival, music journalists Richard Bienstock and Tom Beaujour flash back to when the Lollapalooza we know now was a new tour concept bringing 1990s alternative artists and ideas center stage. Lollapalooza first transports readers back to the festival's origins – a 20+ city summer sprawl highlighting alternative music, art, and counterculture, conceived by Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band Jane's Addiction. From 1991-1997, this breakthrough tour shifted the scope of live music experiences and helped forge a new path for the decade's subcultures to reach the masses and the media. Bienstock and Beaujour have compiled hundreds of new interviews to dig into the dirt of how the historic festival came into being at every level – from headlining artists and record label execs to tour organizers and promoters to freakshow performers, stage crews, and roadies. Lollapalooza is packed with gritty details of an era of shows that defied genres and drew crowds across style lines. Music, art, and politics drawing from alt-rock, goth, industrial, metal, punk, hip-hop, EDM, and avant-garde explorations – all coming together under one big tent. Featuring original interviews with iconic artists like Green Day, Patti Smith, Rage Against the Machine, Ice-T, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Metallica, and many more, this collection amplifies voices that helped shape generations of contemporary thinkers, creative activists, and live music audiences. Journeying through 90s nostalgia, uncensored first-hand accounts, and the long-term reverberations of a groundbreaking tour, Bienstock and Beaujour document a high-impact chapter of modern American music. A VIP pass to the action onstage and backstage, on the road and behind the scenes – Lollapalooza details the cultural shift of the alternative rock revolution and the echoes still heard through concert crowds today. Richard Bienstock is a journalist, musician, and author whose work has been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Spin. He is the executive editor of Guitar Aficionado magazine and former senior editor of Guitar World and has authored and co-authored books including Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Slash: An Intimate Portrait.  Tom Beaujour is a journalist, music producer, and engineer who has been featured in television shows like Orange is the New Black, A Handmaid's Tale, and Criminal Minds. He is a co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Revolver and has contributed to Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Blender, and Billboard. He is the co-author of Nöthin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosion, alongside Richard Bienstock. Mike Squires is a Seattle-based touring musician and the host of Couch Riffs Podcast since 2019. The crucifixion stands as history's ultimate demonstration of sacrificial love—a moment when the sinless Son of God willingly suffered what was rightfully ours to give us what could never be ours through our own efforts.Journeying through the religious and political trials Jesus endured reveals a profound truth: the Creator of the universe stood silent before His accusers, accepting false charges, mockery, and brutal treatment that our sin deserved. Though declared innocent multiple times by both Pilate and Herod, the crowd demanded His crucifixion instead of Barabbas, an actual insurrectionist and murderer—a powerful picture of the substitution at the heart of our salvation. This "great exchange" offers believers five extraordinary gifts purchased at the cross. Through expiation, our sin is completely removed, liberating us from crushing guilt and shame. Through propitiation, God's righteous anger toward sin is fully satisfied, assuring us that no sin is too grievous to be forgiven. Through justification, we're declared righteous despite our imperfections, giving us a fresh start not just once but daily. Through reconciliation, we're brought back into relationship with the Father we ran from, providing the family connection our hearts crave. Through imputation, we're clothed in Christ's perfection, addressing our deepest feelings of inadequacy. These aren't theological abstractions but practical, life-changing realities available to anyone who comes with empty hands and an open heart. Whatever your struggle today—whether shame over past mistakes, doubt about God's forgiveness, need for a fresh start, longing for family, or feelings of never measuring up—the cross offers precisely what you need. Will you reach out and receive what Jesus suffered so greatly to give you? If you want to learn more about the MidTree story or connect with us, go to our website HERE or text us at 812-MID-TREE.

Journeying through adolescence, his eclecticism later manifested through acts like Outkast and System of a Down. But now, on the heels of This Far South — his debut album — Tommy has found his own unique voice that marries his mom's Irish wisdom and his dad's dry Midwestern/Southern wit. On today's show, Tommy shares why Radiohead's “Videotape” speaks to him, his experiences working with Nashville talents Ruston Kelly and Gena Johnson on This Far South, and how the artwork for this album feels like both an ending and a beginning. San Francisco author Brittany Newell's novel “Soft Core” explores the city's underbelly — while making its tech bros minor characters. With pinpoint descriptions of the sweat on a west-bound Muni in October, the ceiling of the sometimes-cool, sometimes-not Makeout Room and the vinyl seats of the now-shuttered Silver Crest Diner, Newell writes of the city as lived by her protagonist, a stripper and dominatrix. And she pushes back on the negative narratives of the city she loves, drawing from San Francisco's rich history of sex and love to argue the city's not dead — and not just for the very rich. She joins us to share her San Francisco and to hear yours. Guest: Brittany Newell, writer and performer living in San Francisco, author of the new novel, “Soft Core”
