In today's episode you will learn about Greek Orthodox Easter and how we celebrate it in Greece. Emily and Danae will first engage in a conversation about the celebrations and then will explain the importance of Easter in Greece and the different traditions.E: Danae, did you know that Easter is one of the biggest celebrations in Greece?D: Yes! I've heard that Easter in Greece is very special. What do you usually do?E: Every place has its own customs, but the main ones are common for everyone. It all starts with Holy Week. Each day has its own significance, but Good Friday is very important.D: Right! That's when the procession of the Epitaphios takes place, isn't it?E: Exactly! On Good Friday evening, we follow the Epitaphios through the streets, holding candles.D: And what about Holy Saturday?E: On Holy Saturday, just before midnight, everyone goes to church for the Resurrection. When the priest says “Christ is Risen,” we light our candles with the Holy Light, the bells ring, and in many places there are fireworks too.D: And then you crack the red eggs, right?E: Yes! Cracking the eggs is one of the most fun traditions. And of course, afterwards we eat magiritsa!D: Magiritsa… that's the soup you eat after the Resurrection, right?E: Exactly! It's a traditional soup made with various kinds of meat and greens. Some people love it, others not so much!D: And on Easter Sunday everyone eats lamb on the spit!E: Yes! We gather with family and friends, roast lamb and kokoretsi, and dance traditional dances.D: That sounds wonderful! Do you also have traditional Easter sweets?E: Of course! Tsourekia and koulourakia are the most well-known.D: What's tsoureki?E: It's a sweet and fluffy bread with aromatic spices like mahlepi and mastiha.D: I definitely have to try that! But usually, people celebrate Easter in the villages, right?E: Right, many people leave the cities and go to their villages to celebrate with relatives. The atmosphere there is even more traditional and festive!D: How lovely! I'd really like to celebrate Easter in a Greek village too.E: We can celebrate together! This year, in fact, Orthodox and Catholic Easter fall on the same day. So we can go to my village together. What do you say?D: Do you think I can still make it?E: Absolutely!   In honor of Lao New year, we have a special episode featuring Danae Hendrickson, Chief of Mission Advancement and Communications at Legacies of War.  Danae shares her journey as a Lao American and her work with Legacies of War to address the devastating impact of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Laos caused by the U.S.'s Secret War in Laos and its secret bombing campaign.  Danae's family history as refugees from Laos deeply informs her advocacy for survivors and for greater U.S. responsibility in clearing UXO.  The episode highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by the secret bombing of Laos during the Vietnam War, the challenges posed by funding freezes, and the importance of remembering this history.  This conversation emphasizes the importance of community led advocacy, historical awareness, and finding hope amidst the legacies of war in Southeast Asia.   Key Takeaways: America's Secret War in Laos and its secret bombing campaign dropping over 2 million tons of bombs on Laos between 1964 and 1973. The U.S.'s moral obligation to clear unexploded ordinances left by its secret bombing campaign that's killing innocent children today. How U.S. Foreign Aid is provided and why America should be held accountable and take responsibility to right its past wrongs. Legacies of War's mission to support community led advocacy and engage elected officials to continue to support the clearing of UXOs. The detrimental impact of funding freezes, including USAID, to local communities who are continuing to be harmed by the U.S.'s war campaign. It's getting close! Remind me, what time is our flight?E: / We're flying on Friday, August 15th, at 2:00 PM from Newark Airport, and the flight lasts about 9 hours and 15 minutes.D: Άρα θα πάρουμε το λεωφορείο του αεροδρομίου κατά τις 9:00, γιατί θέλουμε γύρω στις 2 ώρες να φτάσουμε και θα έχουμε βαλίτσες να παραδώσουμε. / So, we'll take the airport bus around 9:00 AM because we'll need about 2 hours to get there, and we have luggage to check in.E: Ακριβώς! We'll arrive around 6:00 AM Greek time. I was thinking we should take the metro, which is faster, to get to our hotel in the city center. We've booked the hotel, right?D: Εννοείται. / Of course. I've reserved a double room for two nights, from August 16th to 18th. And on the morning of the 18th, we'll head to Nafpaktos.E: Λες να πάμε από Αθήνα στη Ναύπακτο με ΚΤΕΛ ή να νοικιάσουμε αμάξι; / Great, so we have our accommodation and airport transfers sorted. Do you think we should take the bus from Athens to Nafpaktos, or should we rent a car?D: Θα έλεγα καλύτερα να νοικιάσουμε αμάξι, γιατί τα δρομολόγια του ΚΤΕΛ δεν θα μας βολέψουν. / I'd say renting a car is better because the bus schedules won't be convenient. The departure point is far away, and the first bus leaves at 11:00 AM.E: / You're right, that's too late. Renting a car will give us more flexibility and make traveling easier.D: Έτσι το σκέφτηκα και εγώ. Τι λες; / That's what I thought too. Also, while we're there, we could take a day trip to one of the nearby islands and drive to the port to catch a ferry to Kefalonia or Zakynthos. What do you think?E: Τέλεια ιδέα! Should we book the ferry tickets now?D: Καλό θα ήταν! Ξέρεις πόσο κάνουν; / That would be a good idea! Do you know how much they cost?E: Θα ψάξω στο σάιτ. /  I'll check the website.D: The British bass-baritone Norman Bailey (23 March 1933 – 15 September 2021) was one of the premier Wagner singers of his generation, appearing in his signature roles (Hans Sachs, the Dutchman, and Wotan, among others) at the most prestigious festival and with the most distinguished opera companies around the world. He was also celebrated for his Verdi and Strauss portrayals and was an skillful, intuitive, and communicative recitalist. In this refurbished bonus episode, he is heard in operatic scenes by all three of those composers, and additionally as a big-voiced miniaturist in songs by Peter Warlock, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Hugo Wolf. “Guest stars” in the operatic excerpts (from Walküre, Macbeth, Holländer, Salome, Falstaff, Die Liebe der Danae, and The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) include Galina Vishnevskaya, Margaret Curphey, Carol Neblett, Arlene Saunders, and Montserrat Caballé, conducted by Otto Klemperer, Julius Rudel, Alexander Gibson, Anton Guadagno, Reginald Goodall, and Charles Mackerras. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. / In the morning, I went to the gym and then to the doctor. After that, I went to work, where we had a lot of meetings at the office. Even when I got home, I had some more phone calls to make. D: Πωπω! Και τι ώρα γύρισες στο σπίτι; / Wow! Εσένα πώς ήταν η μέρα σου; / Tell me about it! How was your day? / Mine was a bit more relaxed. I worked from home today, but I still had a lot of work and didn't get up from my desk at all. I managed to take a break after many hours and eat a little. In today's episode you will expand your vocabulary and learn different ways to say why something happened in Greek! Emily and Danai will first engage in a conversation talking about two accidents and will explain how to use the word "γιατί" and it's synonyms. E: Δανάη! Τι κάνεις εσύ εδώ; / Danae! What are you doing here? /I had a small car accident. What happened? Did you get hurt? / I was driving on the highway, and near the intersection, a truck in front of me stopped suddenly. I managed to brake, but it was raining, and the car slid, went off the road, and hit the bollards. E: Πωπω! Χτύπησες πολύ; /Wow! Did you get hurt badly? /Fortunately, no, I didn't get hurt badly because I was wearing my seatbelt! My neck jerked and my head hurts. Ήταν κανένας άλλος μαζί σου μέσα στο αμάξι; /I hope it's nothing serious. Was anyone else in the car with you? /I was with a friend of mine. She hurt her knee a little and her right wrist because she tried to brace herself against the dashboard. E: Πάλι καλά! Το αμάξι; /Well, that's a relief! How's the car? D: Αχ άσε! /Oh, don't ask! The car's a wreck. It probably can't be repaired. /It doesn't matter! What matters is that you're both okay! D: Έχεις δίκιο. Εσύ τι κάνεις εδώ; /You're right. What are you doing here? /I brought my daughter because she jumped off the bed and twisted her ankle. D: Τον έσπασε ή τον στραμπούληξε; / Did she break it or just sprain it? / It looks like she just sprained it. We're waiting for the X-ray results. / I'm also waiting for an X-ray. I hope it's something simple! Bible Reading: Psalm 118:6-9; Isaiah 41:10Danae was excited when she returned home from an afternoon of horseback riding. "That was so much fun!" she told her family. "We went on a trail ride through the woods. My horse was spooked once, but I didn't fall off!" "Spooked?" asked Dallas, Danae's little brother. "Did you see a ghost?"Danae laughed. "No, Dallas. It's just that when horses see something they don't expect--like a piece of paper blowing in the wind--they might all of a sudden jump sideways or try to run away. We call that being spooked. If you're not a good rider, you might fall off when the horse does that.""Horses are so big!" said Dallas. "Why would papers scare them?"Danae shrugged. "I don't know. They just do. But if the horse knows you and trusts you, he usually calms down and you can get him to go places he'd be scared to go otherwise.""Sounds like you've learned a lot about horses and how to ride them," said Dad. "Your description of how a horse responds when he trusts his rider is a good picture of how we should respond when we truly trust God."Danae tilted her head. "You mean we shouldn't be afraid to go wherever God wants us to go because we can trust Him to take care of us?""Exactly," said Dad. "We need to trust Him in every situation. Sometimes we get spooked when unexpected things happen in our lives. We need to learn to trust God to take us through all the scary places.""Like when Mom was diagnosed with cancer?" asked Dallas. "That was scary." Mom nodded. "It was scary for me too. But your dad's right--we can trust God to take care of us in scary situations like that. Even though I was afraid of what might happen, I knew that because Jesus died to save me, He would always be with me through everything. Knowing that gave me peace and helped me not be afraid.""I didn't know I'd learn all this just from horseback riding," Danae said.A mischievous grin crept across Dallas's face. "Maybe it's time for me to take lessons too so we can all learn more about Jesus!"– Deborah S. MarettHow About You?What things in life spook you--what scares you or makes you nervous? When you face scary situations, remember that Jesus is with you and in control of everything that happens. He loves you so much that He gave His life for you, and He promises to take care of you. While completing her BFA at Baylor University, Rebekah Danae's fourteen year painting practice was stylistically and thematically influenced by formative experiences in Belgium, studying Rene Magritte's surrealist blend of comedy and peril, and in Texas, learning from Sedrick Huckaby's metaphoric expressions offaith, community, and heritage.Sculpturally— through leatherwork and interior design— Danae's work has been influenced by the cowboy boot making community in Beggs, Oklahoma and the design firm of Christopher Murphy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In practice, Danae draws inspiration from Virgil Abloh, who blurred the lines of art and commerce through the tools of contemporary culture; Rebecca Belmore's ability to elicit intimate moments of reflection while tackling tremendous contemporary issues; the liberatory mysticism of Afrofuturism philosophy; the fiber artists of the wearable art movement in the 70s; and from the community-based relational practice of Rick Lowe.Through her work, Rebekah Danae and A Creative House orchestrate a movement in the middle of the country, made up of a diverse creative choir. Far from a lone ranger, Danae works collaboratively across a curated network of Oklahomans— from the punk underground, homegrown rappers and producers, luxury interior designers, rodeo cowboys, rural bootmakers, to philanthropic, political, and educational leaders. Her approach, while whimsical and surreal, has the intended impact of critical regional culture-shaping from the current white supremacy that is prevalent regionally today and toward a co-created futurist Oklahoma, the liberated West.
