Join us as we discuss what makes the cult favorite "The Princess Bride" one of the cheesiest movies around.  From cheesy scenes and campy characters, to contrived plot and questionable special effects, this movie has it all; and that's why we love it! We look at the lovable Fezzik and what makes him a misunderstood oaf.  We discuss how Andre the Giant was absolutely made to play Fezzik.  Anybody want a peanut? Remember the horrifying eels by the ship?  Or the nasty ROUS's that plagued Westley and Buttercup?   Well, the scariest part of these monsters may have been how they look 30 years later.  But we'll discuss why we can dismiss these cheesy effects. Join us as we discuss what makes the cult favorite The Princess Bride one of the cheesiest movies around.  From cheesy scenes and campy characters, to contrived plot and questionable special effects, this movie has it all; and that's why we love it! We talk about the story's origin; written by William Goldman or S. Morgenstern, whichever you choose to believe.  Pretty interesting how the way the book is presented mirrors how the movie flows.  Turns out we're all Fred Savage.  We discuss how the movie went from generic fantasy movie to huge cult classic.   The Princess Bride is basically just a fairy tale, and that is why it is so accessible to so many people.  There are princesses, bad guys, sword fights, pirates, revenge, silly names; everything you need for a great fairy tale.  We look at some famous cheesy romantic scenes ("As you wish!") as well as perhaps the most famous line ("My name is Inigo Montoya.  You killed my father.  Prepare to die!") Why are these so memorable? We dissect the bad guys.  Was Prince Humperdink really all that scary?  Were Humperdink and Buttercup actually perfect for each other?  How great of a character was Vizzini (very great).  Why is a character as generic and played as Inigo Montoya so memorable? In our opening episode, we'll discuss cheesiness in different genres.  We take a look at romantic cliches found in movies and TV, and wonder if they would work in real life.  Spoiler Alert: They won't. Kendra shares some stories about boyfriends who may have seen one too many RomComs.  While Ian, not being a romantic himself, relays the tale of a love-struck friend.  It doesn't end well. We lament the death of the horror movie with the prevalence of jump scares.  We differentiate between good horror (The Others, The Sixth Sense, The Witch) and bad horror (The Grudge, The Haunting of Molly Hartley, The Woman in Black.)  It's hard to get a feel for story or atmosphere if a ghoul keeps screaming in your face. We make a startling discovery that most sports movies are exactly the same.  They're all pretty much Rudy.  Even movies we love (Remember the Titans, The Blindside) are guilty of the same formula.
