It started with a messy lab and a mysterious mold. But turning “mold juice” into the world's first antibiotic would take a sick policeman, a market cantaloupe, and an extraordinary wartime collaboration between scientists, governments, and industry. This is the story of how penicillin changed the world.Guests:Kevin Brown, Trust Archivist to Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and curator of the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum at St. Mary's Hospital; author of Penicillin Man: Alexander Fleming and the Antibiotic RevolutionDiane Wendt, curator in the Division of Medicine and Science at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History
This week on Media McKnight, Rob McKnight breaks down one of the biggest behind-the-scenes shake-ups in Australian radio — the fallout from Ash Bradnam's axing from NOVA Brisbane after 21 years, the confirmed departure of Nikki Osborne, and the return of Susie O'Neil to breakfast. Rob also takes aim at the misleading “quit live on air” headlines and explains what actually happened behind the scenes — and why clickbait reporting is eroding trust in media coverage. Plus, a deep dive into one of the most significant global media battles in years: Netflix's blockbuster acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount's hostile takeover move, and what all of this could mean for Network 10, local investment, and the future of AFL and NRL broadcast rights in Australia. Could a failed Paramount bid actually put Channel 10 back in the sports rights race? Also in this episode: – The escalating feud between 50 Cent and Sean “Diddy” Combs, and the explosive Netflix docuseries that's reignited it – The end of the ACRAs and why the new replacement radio and podcast awards are pricing out independents – A brutally honest new segment: “Things I Don't Give a Sh*t About” – And a trip into the McKnight Tonight archives with rare 2011 footage from the 9NEWS and A Current Affair teams If you care about Australian media, radio, television, streaming, sports rights, and industry power plays, this episode is essential viewing. Today we dived in deep on all the dirty gossip from Hollywood over the weekend, but somehow got into Croat Nat's Harry Potter-esque sneezing habits.... “What would you do if you discovered a masterpiece lost for 400 years hidden in your own home?” That's just one of the wild questions Sandy and Tricia tackle in this episode of The Sandy Show, where every moment is a blend of laughter, heart, and a dash of mischief. Join Sandy and Tricia as they serve up a whirlwind of stories—from the hilarious (and slightly evil) Christmas parenting hacks to the heartfelt campaign to free Betty, the world's most depressed circus elephant. Tricia surprises everyone by siding with PETA, championing the clever idea for Alice in Chains to become “Betty in Chains” for a month. “Let Betty go. She's done her time,” Tricia declares, sparking a conversation that's as passionate as it is poignant. Relive the magic of holiday movies as the duo reveals which Christmas classics are returning to the big screen, and laugh along as they debate whether “Love Actually” truly counts as a Christmas movie. Nostalgia runs deep as Sandy and Tricia reminisce about old-school movie outings, complete with newspaper listings and spontaneous ticket window decisions. The episode doesn't shy away from the quirky and the relatable—like the debate over the perfect winter thermostat setting (“68 degrees? That sounds like a freaking tinderbox to me!”), the Oxford Dictionary's Word of the Year (“rage bait”), and the confessions of following people online just to stay annoyed. Listeners are treated to playful banter, including the infamous “dirty legging” accusation and a shout-out to loyal podcast fans who stuck around through Thanksgiving. With memorable moments, witty exchanges, and genuine heart, this episode captures the essence of The Sandy Show: real conversations, real laughs, and real life.Notable Quotes:“Let Betty go. She's done her time.”“I don't trust any animal that can poop and walk at the same time.”“68 degrees? That sounds like a freaking tinderbox to me!”“You're a grudge guy. Why do I hang out with you?”“Do us a solid and copy and paste the link to this episode and send it to a friend or two.”Call-to-Action:Loved the show? Don't miss a moment—subscribe to The Sandy Show, leave us a review, and share this episode with your friends. Your support keeps the laughter (and the mischief) going!

If you just aren't ready for Halloween season to be over, join Byrd, Tom, Kevin, Lux, (and Trev, kind of) for a talk about one of Japan's biggest horror franchises, Ju-On (also known as the Grudge)! This introduced the vengeful ghost Kayako and her son Toshio to the horror world and they have since become some of Japan's biggest horror icons. The series was by Takashi Shimizu originally for two shorts as part of the School Ghost Stories tv specials, which later spun off into two full length direct to video films, Ju-On: The Curse and Ju-On: The Curse 2 in 2000. They were successful enough that a third film, Ju-On: The Grudge was made for theatrical release in 2002, which led to the series becoming a global phenomenon (leading to Shimizu's own American remake starting a Hollywood branch of the franchise). It was quickly followed by Ju-On: The Grudge 2 and many more sequels after. As we discuss the first four movies and the history of the franchise, we'll discuss haunted houses, ghost children, time loops, and more! Grab your leftover Halloween candy and enjoy the conversation!

Tom Logue - November 2nd 2025 God forgives 10,000 talents — and forgiven people forgive. This week, Tom continues our King and His Kingdom series in Matthew 18:21–35, where Jesus teaches what forgiveness actually is, and what reconciliation actually requires. Using the parable of the unforgiving servant, Tom shows how forgiveness is not pretending nothing happened — forgiveness is paying the debt yourself instead of making the other person pay. He also unpacks why reconciliation requires both ingredients: repentance + forgiveness… not one without the other. This message calls us out of pride, bitterness, tally-keeping, and “they owe me,” into the freedom and humility of the gospel — where God cancels our unpayable debt through Christ, and empowers us to extend that same mercy toward others. Elani and Simone both have some good news in the catch up! The ladies begin today's discussion with talking about the benefits of letting go of grudges (spoiler: it affects your body, not just your mind). They close out with ADL (Advice for Driving and for Life) and a thank you to those who attended CrafterDay!
Happy Ghoulsday Reviewlsday! The boys are back with another spooky installment of grimy, Halloweentimey reviews, like for flesh-toned barefeet slippers and the fits they help you get, the faded lore of The Grudge franchise, caskets that smell pretty okay I guess, a book of Poe (but not Poe's words), and a wide-eyed, chainsaw wielding scarer. We dive deep into history for some classic reviews of The Mummy (1932) and make sure we keep it cheesy throughout.

Summer's done, and now we're hurtling toward the darkest, coldest days of the year. So forgive us if we aren't feeling ourselves. It's as if an evil force has taken over our souls. ... Could this be what it feels like to be possessed? In the spirit of the season, this episode of "How We Heard It" explores the phenomenon of possession as portrayed in the movies. Your hosts - veteran entertainment journalists and horror-movie aficionados Wayne Bledsoe and Chuck Campbell - compare notes on one of the most lucrative subgenres in the film industry. (John Baker's along for the ride, too, though he doesn't like scary movies.) There are the old-school priest-and-holy-water possession movies popularized by "The Exorcist" franchise (well, at least the first and third installments), and subsequently everything from the "Conjuring/Annabelle/Nun" world to solo shots like "Late Night with the Devil," "Jennifer's Body" and "Immaculate." Then there are location-oriented hauntings and possessions, from "The Amityville Horror" and "The Shining" to "Evil Dead" and "Paranormal Activity." And, of course, curse-oriented movies like "The Ring," "The Grudge" and "Drag Me to Hell." And who can forget that creepy boy from "The Omen"? We've all felt like that kid from time to time.
In this episode of ClassHorrorCast, we go deep into the dark and fascinating world of horror storytelling with writer and director Jeff Buhler — the creative force behind The Midnight Meat Train, The Prodigy, Pet Sematary (2019), and The Grudge (2020).Jeff has built a reputation as one of the few modern writers who can take classic horror themes and twist them into something raw, emotional, and deeply unsettling. From the claustrophobic terror of Nightflyers to the brutal beauty of The Midnight Meat Train, his work explores the space between fear and fascination — where the human mind becomes the real monster. We talk about how he first discovered horror, his journey from independent filmmaker to Hollywood screenwriter, and what it really takes to write stories that crawl under your skin.Jeff shares insights on creative process, adaptation, collaboration, and how to find authenticity in a genre often ruled by formulas. Whether you're a filmmaker, horror fan, or simply fascinated by the psychology of fear, this episode offers an honest, thoughtful look at how nightmares are built — one word at a time.Press play, dim the lights, and join us for a masterclass in modern horror storytelling.Check out more of my content - HEREBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/class-horror-cast--4295531/support.
