Today we are joined by Luiz Guilherme Burlamaqui, author of The Making of Global FIFA: Cold War Politics and the Rise of João Havelange to the FIFA Presidency, 1950-1974 (De Gruyter, 2023). This book was previously published in Portuguese as A Dança das Cadeiras a eleição de João Havelange à presidenência da FIFA (1950-1974). In our conversation, we discussed João Havelange's rise to FIFA's presidency, how the FIFA leader crafted his own legacy, and the difficulties of publishing work in translation. In The Making of Global FIFA, Burlamaqui argues that while Havelange was the FIFA president that signed the first deal with Coca Cola, his election was not a radical departure from “pure” football into commercialization. Far from a tale of British stiffness and Brazilian flexibility, Burlamaqui shows a longer and interconnected history of FIFA's global expansion. Former FIFA president Stanley Rous was less conservative than critics alleged. Havelange was more conservative than many assumed, happy to work with entrenched forces across the political and sporting worlds. Burlamaqui conducted extensive archival research in Brazil, the UK, and at FIFA and the IOC in Switzerland. His compelling argument demonstrates the contingency of Havelange's rise. His success was tied intimately to the domestic politics of the military regime and diplomatic efforts of Brazil in the 1970s. Chapters 2 and 3 offer biographical examinations of Havelange and situate his personal history into the broader story of Brazil and the globe. Dr. Nicole Rous was raised in Melbourne, Australia. She decided at an early age that she wanted to make veterinary medicine her life's work. She earned a degree with Honours in Animal Science with a co-major in Vision Science from the University of Melbourne in 2003. Her Honours Thesis work led to the publication of a paper in Veterinary Ophthalmology in 2007.She then earned her Veterinary Degree, with Honours, from the University of Sydney in 2008. After graduation, she and her husband moved to the UK where she worked in a two doctor small animal practice near Norwich. In 2009 they moved back to Australia and she joined the Monash Veterinary Clinic, where she completed her Membership in small animal reproduction and was the co-author of a paper published in the journal Theriogenology.In 2017, Dr. Rous joined Mont Albert Veterinary Surgery in Melbourne, and she and her husband purchased the clinic in August of 2021.Please enjoy this conversation with Dr. Nicole Rous as we discuss her education, practice evolution, and the entrepreneurial spirit which led her to become a practice owner and start a holistic veterinary business, which is the subject of an upcoming CIVT webinar.

Louisiana-based Lost Bayou Ramblers are a swinging punkass party band who mix Cajun melodies on fiddle, accordion, guitars, and some electric sounds. They've won a regional roots Grammy for their record, Kalenda, but they've also done an original score for ROUS, a film about Nutria Rats and Louisiana's coastal land loss, and contributed to the score for Beasts of the Southern Wild. Fresh off the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans, the Lost Bayou Ramblers join us in the studio (from the Archives, 2018.)
