One Jew, Reb Yosei, remains quiet about Rome. Reb Yehuda praises the Romans for elevating the standards of life; and Reb Shimon is critical because he said it was for narcissistic purposes. But is there a deeper theme behind this debate? The fact that the Talmud records the details of the debate, and gives us the names of the debaters, instead of just saying that Reb Shimon criticized the government, indicates there is some depth and gravitas to this debate, and that the names are important. As it turns out, the debate on Rome fascinatingly reflects a debate between Reb Yehuda and Reb Shimon in many aspects of Jewish law. The Talmud states: Chezekiah stated in the name of Rabbi Jeremiah, who said it in the name of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, "I am able to exempt the whole world from judgment from the day that I was born until now!” (Sukkah 45b). What is that supposed to mean? The Midrash states in Avod Derabi Nasan ch. 16: Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai would say: From this you know that Israel will never see the face of purgatory. Con un ricco apparato iconografico e approfondimenti sui protagonisti delle vicende descritte.La storia del Piemonte è stata «plasmata» da una serie interminabile di conflitti armati che ebbero come protagonista la dinastia sabauda e che fecero del ducato nel Seicento e Settecento il più agguerrito Stato italiano. Il saggio si sofferma su alcuni momenti cruciali, dalla «rinascita» del ducato a opera di Emanuele Filiberto, dopo la battaglia di San Quintino (1557), fino alla seconda guerra d'Indipendenza (1859). L'epoca delle «grandi» battaglie dei Savoia, coincide con l'inizio dello scontro tra Francia e Spagna per il predominio continentale, nei primi decenni del Cinquecento, quando il Piemonte divenne il passaggio obbligato delle armate transalpine che scendevano a combattere in Lombardia gli eserciti spagnoli. La prima battaglia presa in considerazione, quella di San Quintino, non fu una battaglia “dei” Savoia ma una battaglia di “un Savoia”, infatti, Emanuele Filiberto “Testa di ferro”, governatore dei Paesi Bassi, comandava le truppe spagnole e alla battaglia prese parte anche un manipolo di fanti piemontesi. Grazie a quella vittoria Emanuele Filiberto recuperò la Savoia e alcuni territori piemontesi, trasferendo successivamente la capitale da Chambéry a Torino. Vengono poi analizzate le battaglie di Vittorio Amedeo II, la “Volpe Savoiarda” (la battaglia di Staffarda del 1690, la battaglia della Marsaglia del 1693, l'assedio di Verrua del 1704, l'assedio di Torino del 1706, il caso più spettacolare di una lotta fra artiglierie pesanti e massicce fortificazioni): grazie alle conquiste territoriali così ottenute il ducato diventerà regno. La forza militare dei Savoia fu poi confermata nel corso della successiva guerra di Successione austriaca, quando le truppe di Carlo Emanuele III inflissero una durissima sconfitta ai francesi nella battaglia del colle dell'Assietta (1747). Seguono le battaglie di Carlo Alberto, il “Re Tentenna” (Curtatone e Montanara, Goito, Custoza, Mortara e la sconfitta di Novara che porterà Carlo Alberto ad abdicare); infine, quelle di Vittorio Emanuele II (la battaglia di Montebello del 1859, quella di Magenta, quindi Solferino e San Martino). Arrivando così all'11 luglio del 1859, quando Napoleone III e Francesco Giuseppe firmarono a Villafranca l'armistizio che pose fine al conflitto.  L'AUTORE:Pier Giorgio Viberti è nato nel 1950 a Fossano (Cuneo) e si è trasferito giovanissimo a Torino, dove si è laureato prima in Lettere, poi in Scienze Politiche. Nel capoluogo piemontese ha trascorso tutta la sua vita di insegnante in istituti d'istruzione secondaria superiore. Well this week's guest has been through hell and back to make it to the finals of the World Championship of public speaking and explains how he developed his skills so quickly and how you can too.Starting with zero experience, Tristan became the fastest competitor in history to reach the finals in just seven months. Up against so much seasoned competition he had to take a different tack. He chose to lean into and develop impromptu speaking, which meant that instead of only being confident when he'd rehearsed a script, he could be confident all of the time.My key takeaways are:Your sense of sweating or blushing or whatever negative feelings you have that you think people can see when you are speaking publicly—they can't. GARY ACOSTA BIO Gary Acosta is an entrepreneur, public policy advocate, and investor. He is the Co-Founder & CEO of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP ), one of the largest Hispanic business organizations in the nation. He also created the Hispanic Wealth Project, co-founded L'ATTITUDE, and is a general partner of its fund, L'ATTITUDE Ventures.   A self-described serial entrepreneur, Mr. Acosta has founded several mortgage, real estate, and technology companies, including New Vista Asset Management, which, between 2009 and 2013, managed and marketed more than 10,000 real estate assets for banks and other financial institutions, CounselorMax, a web-based process management system for non-profit housing counselors, and RealEstateEspanol.com, an online real estate portal for Spanish-speaking Americans, which eventually sold to a publicly traded company.  Gary served on the inaugural consumer advisory board (CAB) of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and was a member of the boards of directors of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America and Stewart Title Company of California. Steve Soo Hoo was born in Los Angeles, raised at the foothill of Dodger stadium in LA Chinatown and later moved to San Gabriel Valley to the city of Montebello. He is the youngest of three children to a family who is one of the original founding families of Los Angeles' Chinatown. He attended school in Montebello where he was always involved with some sort of art (visual or audio) and technology, he loved his apple ii+ and iie... yes he's that old. He's a child of the 70s/80s watching iconic sitcoms and played in nostalgic arcades of legends throughout the SGV (Pirates Cove, Electric Planet, Tilt, and Pac Man arcade), iconic brand mascots and pop culture was part of his daily diet. He witnessed the growth of the internet at it's infancy in the early 90s attending college when IRC was the latest and cheapest form of communication with friends throughout  the US who were from the SGV which influenced him to keep up with technology. Steve became a Graphic Designer while attending Long Beach State. He has designed a wide variety of clients in numerous industries including videogame, aerospace, entertainment, legal, healthcare, and finance (which he is currently designing for). He's definitely influenced by his past exposure to iconic brands of the 70s and 80s as he creates new designs for his various projects.Steve has a passion for food and cooking that started as early as he could remember following his mom cooking and also visiting relatives at their restaurants in LA and SGV. As a method to relax from work, Steve loves to cook and BBQ, seeing the instant reactions of people eating his latest creation brings him joy, more so when it's masses of people. He loves exploring the next food trend in the SGV, which currently appears to be hot pot or Chinese BBQ skewers.
