In this episode, I share why your intuition—not another framework—is the method you've been looking for. I talk about how A Discovery of Witches helped me see my own magic more clearly, why 2025 has been a year of intense shedding, and how ignoring your body's wisdom buries your intuition. We'll explore: Why templates and scripts eventually become cages The difference between intuition, anxiety, and projection How to read the body and field without overstepping What justice-aligned, sovereignty-first intuitive language sounds like Why so many intuitive practitioners feel “over-trained and under-trusting” If you've ever sensed more in session than your modality accounts for—and felt unsure how to use it ethically—this conversation is for you.
Episode 148 of the Taproom Podcast features the Inland Empire Brew Witches — Tiffany, Alexis, Loretta and Sandra — as they share how the group started, grew and built a fiercely supportive community. Host Mike also mixes in travel notes from Chicago and Milwaukee, with brewery highlights from Lakefront, Central Waters and a Miller tour. The conversation covers the Brew Witches' origins and membership, collab brews (Feathered Serpent, Stout House and upcoming Metabolic), charity beers (breast cancer benefit projects like “Save the Pear” and “Hefty Breasty”), brew days, bottle shares and what it means to bring more women into beer. Personal stories touch on community support through loss, homebrewing and industry paths, plus light-hearted riffs on beer styles, food pairings, video games and hangover remedies.

Philip, Lara, and Bridget discuss the conclusion of the film adaptations of the Broadway musical 'Wicked.' Styled 'Wicked: For Good' and filmed simultaneously with act one of the duology, this Universal Pictures release takes place at least a year after the conclusion of the first film. Whilst Glinda, Fiyero and Nessarose are established in their prominent roles as public servants, Elphaba is painted in the public's eye as the traitorous, deplorable "Wicked Witch of the West." The current Ozian regime is one of rapid industrialization and modernization, and anyone other than a proper human Ozian is subject to discrimination or worse. In this magical land where the foremost Wizard and Witch are incapable of real magic, true power is viewed with hostility by the one magical mastermind, Madam Morrible. Uniformity and submissiveness are paramount. Can Elphaba enlist the aid of the Wizard and Glinda to thwart their behind-the-scenes puppetmaster? Besides being a perfect movie in its own right, Hamnet is also almost a one-to-one restaging of Robert Eggers' The Witch — one of our favorite movies of all time. In this episode, we're running through all the similarities and echoes we noticed, from a shared interest in female folk horror to pivotal exorcisms of oldest sons and impossible, undead finales. “EXORCISM” by Ray Bradbury | When her mailman husband delivered a package of forbidden books to the woman up the street, Elmira Brown finally had proof of what she'd suspected all along — and she wasn't about to let a witch win another election.IN THIS EPISODE: The name Ray Bradbury immediately brings to mind such fictional tales – classics, many of them… some of which I've narrated here in the podcast such as “The Jar”, “Skeleton”, and “The Small Assassin.” But as good as Bradbury was at writing about the paranormal, he could also write comedy – and in tonight's story he combines the two. “Exorcism” is a fun short tale about a nosy housewife who suspects an older woman in town is studying to become a witch… and decides to confront the old lady to voice her disapproval. We're re-releasing this powerful conversation with one of my best friends, Layla Martin, as we prepare for our next pilgrimage to Greece in Spring 2026. This episode kicks off our Priestess Pilgrimage series — a journey into the mysteries, medicines, and feminine technologies that shaped entire civilizations. In Part 1, Layla and I explore what it meant to walk as a priestess, why words like witch and oracle were once titles of honor, and how ancient rituals using breath, trance, plants, and embodied worship were designed to help humans experience the divine directly. We also share why tens of thousands of people once traveled to Eleusis to transform their relationship with death — and why those same technologies are rising again now. If you've ever felt the pull toward deeper remembrance, this episode is a doorway. In this episode, we explore: •The true meaning of “High Priestess” — beyond trend, beyond aesthetic •Why the ancient “witch” was simply the wise woman and spiritual leader • How Eleusis became the epicenter of direct divine experience • The connection between plant medicine and early mystical Christianity • Why embodied spirituality threatens systems of control • The Persephone descent as a map for healing and power • How reclamation impacts love, sex, creativity, body image & sovereignty • The very real, very human moments of pilgrimage (including the porta potty initiation) Key Moments: [00:01] High priestesses & the origins of plant medicine as sacrament [00:56] Why Emily & Layla created their own priestess pilgrimage [02:40] Witch, wise woman, priestess — reclaiming the lineage [05:06] What it means to hold spiritual authority in your own body [07:02] How patriarchy severed women from the divine [08:05] The “religion with no name” — nature, cosmos, direct experience [09:41] The Eleusinian Mysteries & dying before you die [12:01] The ingredients, codes & hidden teachings of the Kaikion [15:11] Plant medicine, sovereignty & why it threatened empire [17:18] The psychological impact of remembering your divinity [20:03] Inside the descent myth of Persephone & Demeter [23:52] The moment the pilgrimage became hilariously human Layla Martin — Founder of the VITA Method, teacher of Tantra, sexuality, emotional mastery, and spiritual awakening. The story of how Randall Ann Homan got her name is a unique one. In this episode, meet and get to know Randall and her partner, in life and in neon, Al Barna. Today, the couple are all about all things San Francisco neon. But we'll get to that. When Randall's dad was a teenager, he saved a young girl named Randall from drowning. After saving the little girl, he taught her to swim. Years later, when he had his own daughter, he carried the name forward. Randall Homan grew up in Goodyear, Arizona, just outside of Phoenix. The town was named for the tire company, and it was where, back in the day, the eponymous blimp lived when not in use. Randall has a fun story about being brushed by the Goodyear blimp's ropes when she was a kid. She considered her hometown "Nowheresville" and left as soon as she could—at 17, after graduating from high school early. Randall came straight to San Francisco to attend Lone Mountain College (the University of San Francisco today). "It was wild," she says about her time in the Seventies in The City. Art school is what brought both Randall and Al to San Francisco. At her school, there was a dorm where all the art students, including Randall, lived. Views out the window of that dorm were always completely foggy except for one thing—the neon sign at the Bridge Theater on Geary pierced that blanket of gray. It left a strong impression on them both. Rewinding a bit, Randall says that there was a little neon in her hometown of Goodyear, and she was fascinated by it. She was interested in how it worked, but also was drawn to the beauty of the colored light. When I ask Randall whether she ever left San Francisco after her initial move here, she rewinds a little bit to talk about how young they both were when she and Al met. "Cupid hit us both square in the heart," she says. But they wanted to see the rest of the country. They both wanted to visit where the other is from (Al came here from Pennsylvania), but they compromised on New Orleans. They were drawn to NOLA by the music, and they sure did see a lot of that. But getting jobs was a different story. That didn't come easy in "the Big Easy," and so they came back. They've been in their San Francisco apartment for 30-plus years, and they're not going anywhere. As mentioned, Al comes from Pennsylvania, specifically the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre northeast area of the state. It was coal country, but young Al wanted to pursue art. And so he came to The City to go to the San Francisco Art Institute (RIP). It was 1976, and even though he was in college, Al never intended to stay longer than a year or two. The Beats influenced Al, and though San Francisco figures largely in their history, so does travel. But he and Randall were here during the so-called Season of the Witch—1978. Randall is quick to point out how much easier it was to move within The City back then, something they did every six months or so for a stretch. I ask them to rattle off the different neighborhoods, and they oblige me: Lower Nob Hill, North Beach, and The Mission figure prominently, among others. Al goes into a little more detail about how the two met. It was at a going-away party for a mutual friend. For him, that first meeting settled it. Randall was about to go to school in Los Angeles, and Al decided to join her down south. After a couple years at SFAI, Al left school to work for a film company, where he did a lot more learning. He was taking lots of photos, and it wasn't until Randall pointed out the abundance of neon signs in the backgrounds of his pictures that Al picked up on it. In addition to LA, they also spent some time in Flagstaff, Arizona, where they both got jobs at a silk screen company. Randall also got a job working for a sign painter whose hands were too shaky for his craft. The work she did painting signs left a big impression on Randall, and you can see it in her love of old neon signs today. Between the Eighties and early 2000s, they each worked in their respective crafts—photography for Al, and graphic design for Randall. Al worked for several decades for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (the parent org for the de Young and Legion of Honor museums). He shares a story of helping prevent a bomb from exploding at the old de Young museum building, just before it was scheduled to be demolished anyway. Randall's graphic design work had her, among other jobs, designing album covers for bands. She did show posters, logos, and branding—work she still engages in to this day. In the Nineties, she designed the cover page for one of the Bay Guardian Best of The Bay issues. Eventually, the two decided to create a book all about neon. Putting together that first book—San Francisco Neon: Survivors and Lost Icons—took five years. We'll talk in more depth about that and their other, more recent projects in Part 2. We end Part 1 with the story of how neon became the central focus of both Al's and Randall's lives. It involved a sign in the Mission that was there one day and gone the next. Check back Thursday for Part 2 with Randall and Al. We recorded this podcast at Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store in North Beach in November 2025. Photography by Nate Oliveira

We discuss purity culture, megachurch hypocrisy, witch-trial history, feminist reclamation, the generational impact of religious fundamentalism, and how horror can become a perfect container for social truth-telling, female rage, and bittersweet hope.Check out the book here:Dark Sisters by Kristi DeMeester Check Out Author Social Media PackagesCheck out the Bookwild Community on PatreonCheck Out My Stories Are My Religion SubstackGet Bookwild MerchFollow @imbookwild on InstagramOther Co-hosts On Instagram:Gare Billings @gareindeedreadsSteph Lauer @books.in.badgerlandHalley Sutton @halleysutton25Brian Watson @readingwithbrianMacKenzie Green @missusa2mba

Long ago, before the great lion Aslan bounded onto bookshelves, C. S. Lewis wrote a science fiction novel set on mythological Mars. From there, the sequel carried Dr. Elwin Ransom by angels to the sister planet Venus. And from there … the Ransom/Cosmic/Space Trilogy descended to the dull world of corrupt college boards, inner-ring politics, and a secret technocracy bent on world domination with the aid of mad science and demons and everything. Eighty years after That Hideous Strength, we explore why C. S. Lewis created this earthbound and weird and wonderful pre-political supernatural thriller. Episode sponsors Sons of Day and Night by Mariposa Aristeo A Faie Tale by Vince Mancuso Above the Circle of Earth by E. The temptations to wield inner rings The Ransom Trilogy really includes all three fantastical genres. It starts with sci-fi, continues to fantasy, ends in supernatural. Stephen would have appreciated knowing this before this book! Because that fact, plus the cover, will affect your expectations. More than the other two, Hideous Strength feels a weird hybrid. For instance, it begins on Earth and feels “grown-up,” even dull. Who is Mark Studdock and Jane? Why do we care about them? And where is Dr. Ransom and the creatures of books 1 and 2? But here Lewis is addressing some deep and personal enemies. One of them is the “inner ring” villain he writes about elsewhere. Call this “the room where it happens,” that seat of power. Right now some conspiracists claim to “expose” secret inner rings. Yet more often they're trying to make new “rings” themselves. This “normal,” subtle threat marks the first real evil of the story. Mark, a social-climbing sociologist, craves to reach this influence. Then he gets there … and discovers it's run by the greater threat. 2. A not-so-N.I.C.E. secular technocracy Enter the National Institute for Co-ordinated Experiments. It's a social movement, an actual autocratic state bent on power. They're all about science, social engineering, efficiency, machines. These theorists take the worst of evil ideologies and mix them up. And for Lewis, this represents the worst corruptions of academia. They destroy natural land like Saruman. Hijack history like IngSoc. And they take over newspapers in plain sight like any petty tyrant. Some have different aims/ideas, such as a truly scary revelation about what exactly has gone wrong with the sterility of the Moon. Others are so poisoned by elitism that they “naturally” fall into evil. That's why we call this a pre-political story. Yes, it's about politics and has overlapping theme, but is about the ideas beneath this. N.I.C.E.'s goal: the subjugation of the human race to macrobes. From here, Lewis finally explains the recurring visions of Jane Studdock (revealing the conspiracy) and a holy resistance order. And, lest there be any doubt, we soon learn the worst threat of all. 3. Devils vs. power to demolish strongholds At last, Dr. Ransom enters the story, leading a small diverse group. He's recruited Christian fellow academics, sure, but also one rather sympathetic skeptic, leading women, and working-class folks. Their enemy is not just flesh and blood, but dark spiritual powers. That's why we call Hideous Strength a true supernatural thriller. Astute readers will discern demonic activity behind the veil. That's no surprise for the author of The Screwtape Letters. Yet the activity is more subtle, in allusion, not overt like Peretti. Ultimately we discern the demons/humans spread their evil ideas in an area Lewis knew very well: the corruption of language. Words, meanings, symbols, translations are vital to this story. And perhaps it's no surprise that the ultimate battle is won not by weapons or even direct intrusions of magic, but by word powers. Clearly the author had in mind a certain Genesis 11 narrative! By the end, one hero utters this divine judgment: “Qui Verbum Dei contempserunt, eis auferetur etiam verbum hominis.” (Kee vehr-boom Deh-ee kon-temp-seh-roont, eh-ees ow-feh-reh-toor eh-tee-ahm vehr-boom ho-mee-nees) Translated: “They that have despised the word of God, from them shall the word of man also be taken away.” These villains “have pulled down Deep Heaven onto their heads.” Holy agents unite from the planets and the past to empower good. Lewis also brings in, quite overtly, his love for medieval cosmology and the planetary influences that are crucial to this universe. And now (with a reread) Stephen has experienced this story with delight like he had hoped, particularly with Lewis's latter head-hopping and fun-poking at the expense of N.I.C.E.'s evildoers. That Hideous Strength ends with startling eucatastrophe and celebration of biblical and based virtues, from cosmic to familial. It's no wonder the story has gained new fans in these similar days. Com station Top question for listeners Do you prefer demonic evil in fiction to be overt or subtle? Next on Fantastical Truth Well, we just talked about the first Chronicle of Narnia … the book! Yet many fans found or rediscovered this series thanks to the Disney-distributed, Walden Media–made film from director Andrew Adamson. Want to feel old? That was two decades ago! So now we shall look back at Narnia's journey to the box office with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which released twenty years ago on Dec. 9, 2005.

Official Washington is seized at the moment with the question of whether efforts to stop what amounts to chemical warfare against the United States have involved violations of the laws of war and, therefore, illegal orders to military personnel. Specifically, congressional committees are investigating the use of lethal force to destroy Venezuelan fast boats fitting the profile of drug traffickers of the Soles cartel's seaborne smuggling operations. The transparent hope of congressional Democrats and, apparently some Republicans, is to find a pretext for removing Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Like the recent video by six Democratic legislators encouraging service personnel to refuse to obey illegal orders, the practical effect will be to render the U.S. armed forces less unified, focused and ready at a time when serious threats to the national security from Communist China, sharia-supremacists and other enemies are metastasizing. This is Frank Gaffney.
