What was your favorite film in the franchise? How about your favorite trap? Let us know what you think, and we will catch you on the next episode where we will jump into a new franchise!
We have finally arrived to a discussion about the final film of the Saw franchise, Jigsaw. Though this is the most recent film that has come out, we have many reasons to believe that there are more to come. Jigsaw, released on May 14, 2021, was written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger and directed by the man, the myth, and the legend, Darren Lynn Bousman. Chris Rock joins us as the lead role as he plays a detective pursuing a jigsaw impersonator. Join us as we talk about how this film left us feeling as we step away from the Saw Franchise temporarily and eagerly await the next chapter of this story. Would you have guessed it? Saw: The Final Chapter was by no means a final chapter of anything. Just 7 years after that release, Jigsaw came out in 2017 and is the first and only film in the Saw Franchise that we see directed by the Spierig brothers. This film, starring Matt Passmore, Tobin Bell, Callum Keith Rennie, and Hannah Emily Anderson, is an attempt to close up some loose ends that were created with Saw: The Final Chapter, which was released in 2010. Join us as we discuss how this film scratched the itch that we had been experiencing since the last release we got to experience. Despite the fact that we did not get to watch this film in 3D as it was intended, we still had many moments that left an impression on us! Saw: The Final Chapter was released on October 29th, 2010 and is the second film that was directed by Kevin Greutert in the franchise. Being the third and final film written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan in the series, the team wraps up the intricate story of Detective Hoffman and what his role was in the story of Jigsaw. Join us as we discuss and contemplate the concept of the notorious Jigsaw apprentice.
Join us on this episode where we talk about Saw VI. The 6th film from the Saw Franchise was released on October 23rd, 2009 and was the first film that we get to see edited by Kevin Greutert, the man responsible for editing the first 5 films of Saw and the Short film that was used to pitch the original script as well. Here is another episode for you folks! In this episode we talk about Saw 5. Dare I say one of us is not a huge fan of this one? All in all, the storyline is becoming more complicated and we have some strong opinions about it. Saw 5 is directed by David Hackl, who was the lead of production design in the three films that came before it. But, this is the first and last film that he directed for the franchise. The film was released on October 24th, 2008 and was written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the second of the three films they wrote for the franchise. Listen and get the scoop for how we feel about the direction the franchise is heading with the release of this movie. You can check out new episodes every Friday on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. It is not like we haven't said it before, but here is a spoiler warning! In this episode, Kenny and I talk about the fourth film in the Saw franchise. Director Darren Lynn Bousman delivers yet another film that is right on par for the films that came before it with the release of Saw IV. The film was released on October 26th, 2007 and was written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, which is their first film of the trilogy that they were signed on to write. Listen along with us as we develop an understanding of the ever complicated story line that is continually becoming more intricate and complex. Get ready for a ride with this one! With each episode that we record, we realized just how twisted and complicated the plots and the way that the story is told are. Saw III, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman an written by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, was released on October 27, 2006. This film is the third film of the franchise and was originally intended to be the final part of the series. Join Kenny and I as we talk about the story that unfolds here and how we feel about it.
This movie, Saw II, is the catalyst that began the podcast that you now see, Franchise Frenzy. This film was released on October 28th, 2005 and though it is the second film in the franchise, it is the first film of that we see directed by Darren Lynn Bousman. In case we have not shared it yet, this movie is one of our favorites from the franchise and we are excited to get to chat about it!
Join Kenny and I as we talk about the first film of the infamous franchise, Saw. This film, written by Leigh Whannell and James Wan, is our introduction to the notorious Jigsaw killer and its sets a foundation for all the films to come. Listen along as we talk about the various traps that are used and the characters that carry the film and begin their legacy. Though the films that follow are different than what was intended when the first Saw was created, this film established a basic formula that future authors would use to tell a complex story that is woven in to the story that begins to unfold for us here.
Before the full feature film Saw was filmed, edited and released in theaters, the writers Leigh Whannell and James Wan needed to find producers to help them achieve their goal of bringing this harrowing story to the big screen. Since the duo had little luck with finding producers in Australia, they were advised to take a trip to California to see if they had any stronger traction with finding a producer there. Before setting off on their journey, they decided to film a single but significant scene from their story. With this powerful short film, they ended up receiving funding from the company to later be known as Twisted Pictures. The short film that was made in just one week included the reverse beartrap scene from the film Saw and it became their key to not only getting the funding that they needed, but also to keep themselves involved with the film with the roles and responsibilities that they wanted. This episode is focused on the short film that Whannell and Wan recorded to help them pitch their film to producers, which is just a stepping stone to what later becomes the full feature film that we know as Saw. If you want to know more about what steps were taken to make the full movie, check out our next episode titled Saw, where we take a deep dive into how this story was created and the journey that it took to become what we know it as today.
Here is a glimpse of what will happen on future episodes of Franchise Frenzy! Join us as we look at the universes that artists developed into films for us to watch on our screens. Whether or not the resulting franchise was what was intended, that is what we get to enjoy today. Did the franchise stay true to what it originally was, or did it make a drastic change? Perhaps those changes were for the better, but we will see that sometimes they're for the worse.
