We were joined by director/writer Leela Varghese, producer Suriyna Sivashanker, and actors Shabana Azeez (return guest from the film Birdeater) and Kavitha Anandasivam to talk representation, internalized racism, and why they fought to keep the title. Who doesn't love rom-coms? Probably the good-looking, wealthy men they've taught women not to pick. Whether it's The Notebook or Celine Song's upcoming A24 film The Materialists, women are often told to go after the down-trotted, underdog man who doesn't have much to give the girl except all of his love and admiration. Meanwhile, there is a charming, sexy, wealthy gentleman who is just as good for her left waiting in the wings. It's perfectly okay for women to choose the richer man, and that doesn't make her a golddigger! We're exploring this topic and more in today's episode. It's a short film extravaganza! This double-header features interviews with not one but two fearless filmmakers who've created something very special in the short film space. First, Jackie Hoffart talks about The Reveal, a comedy about nonbinary Stevie, who struggles to support their sister's gender reveal party while harbouring some news of their own: that they have started on testosterone, that they are transitioning. The Reveal has its world premiere on March 29 at the 2025 Crazy8s Film Gala, AKA the hottest ticket in town. That conversation is followed by a stirring chat with filmmaker, actor, and dancer Juliana Bergstrom about mining her personal life and passions for Harbour. The film premiered on CBC Gem on February 6, and is at once a love letter to art and dance, and the struggles and triumphs of life as an artist. Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

**SMASH** **BREAKS GLASS** Well folks, here we are with another emergency pod, reviewing another one of Heather Henson's Handmade Puppet Dreams films. This time we opted to forgo spinning the wheel to just go ahead and watch a film suggested to us by a friend over on the discord! (shout out to L_Troemel!) For the uninitiated, Handmade Puppet Dreams is a series of short films produced by Heather Henson and her puppet company Ibex Puppetry. Founded in 2004, Handmade puppet dreams has provided the means and exposure for smaller puppet artists to create some truly unique films straight out of their own imaginations. This week the boys will be watching a found object puppet piece based on a Japanese Shinto story called Amaterasu. This one is really special, with beautiful found objects telling a classic mythological story of feuding gods. We hope you enjoy the unique short film from Handmade Puppet Dreams! Single White Female from 1992 is an interesting movie. It seemed to be a big deal at the time, but neither of us remember anything about it. The rumors of Jenna Ortega starring in a remake are certainly interesting, however. The Saw franchise brings back a lot of pleasant memories. Sure, the vast majority of them are tied to the first, but the same can be said about most long running movie series. Naturally, we have opinions about the cancellation of Saw XI and its future.Though we do not have the opportunity to cover them as much as we would like to, we enjoy short films. In this episode we get to talk about three shorts from the Boston Underground Festival. A gory anthology, the truth about banjo strings, and a really cool stop motion flick all caught our attention.Another movie from BUFF that interested us was Chain Reactions. That it was about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was cool enough. Chainsaw is one of the most important horror movies of all time and has a special place in our childhoods. That Stephen King is also prominently featured made it impossible for us to ignore.Alexandre O. Phillipe is a great filmmaker who has made tremendous documentaries about David Lynch, Alien, and The Exorcist. His signature style is on full display here as Chain Reactions is a perfect mix of nostalgia, theory, and opinion on Tobe Hooper's classic. It is a must watch. It has literally been years since we have reviewed a documentary about a cult. So, we were very excited to watch AUM: The Cult at the End of the World. We knew it would be interesting, but we had no idea what to expect. One of us was so dumbfounded by what they saw that they could only use one word to describe it.Aum is unlike any other cult. (Somehow, it is still in existence - kinda.) At its peak, it could legitimately claim worldwide membership that was in the tens of thousands. The existed in full view of the public, Worst of all, they had a relationship with the media that can only be described as friendly. It is a truly wild documentary. We are fortunate to have Producer, Winnie Cheung and actress, Celia Au on the show to discuss their short film, Last Call which premiered at the 2025 SXSW Midnight Short Program. This short fantasy thriller takes you on the psychological journey of a traumatized motorcyclist who daydreams about a sultry serpent woman and is haunted by her enchanting voice. Winnie's credits include being a co-producer on the SXSW Audience Award Winner “Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror” in 2021, and has won several awards at Sundance and more. Inspired by David Cronenberg's body horror, American erotic thrillers, and Eastern fantasy films - LAST CALL reflects Winnie's diasporic identity - a dreamlike blend of the ancestral East, and the rebellious West. Celia Au who previously starred in Wu Assassins and Lodge 49, brings Winnie's vision to life in this story's discovery of profound revelation. We talk about: Integrating and displaying complex emotions in film Ways to deal with internal conflicts How Breath work, mental visualization, and Active Listening are key to facilitating a productive and safe work environment Storytelling as a powerful way to positively change the world.
