Happy Wednesday, Folks! Charlie Paulin wrote and directed the short film “Outed” that came to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2025 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Originality, Short Film – Comedy. “Outed” is one of those comedies that is hilarious the first time you watch it, but then each time you see it again it becomes even funnier. Why? It is mostly Charlie's dialog, as he wrote rapid-fire yet subtle jokes within every single line that were delivered perfectly by his cast Jason Grobstich & Jaymes Mansfield. Some of the biggest tech fails of the 80s.Episode 234 helps March come in like a lion with a fresh batch of GenX nostalgia. It starts with a look back at a short-lived television show that might have been way ahead of its time. Get A Life starred Chris Elliot and at times felt like a comedy fever dream. Though it only lasted two seasons this surreal, dark, and downright wacky show influenced many shows that came after it.In the 1980s, computers were becoming a fixture in schools, homes, and businesses. Growing up in that decade, it was important for students to learn the ins and outs, the whats and whys, of computers. This week we're breaking down the viral self-help phenomenon known as the 5 Second Rule, created by Mel Robbins, and asking whether counting down from five can actually change your life or just make you feel like you're constantly bossing yourself around. We talk about what the rule is, why it's so popular, whether it actually works in real life (especially for procrastination, anxiety, and motivation), and the fine line between discipline and self-pressure. Is it empowering? Is it productivity theater? Or is it just a surprisingly effective mental trick? We also discuss the finale of Traitors and how we feel about the winner, Connor Storie hosting Saturday Night Live, Emily getting back into the dating game, and our acupuncture journey!---Stream Hannah's album, PHASES!Watch Emily's Short Film, All We Were!Emily's Substack: third martini thoughts---Emily's Captivation: TraitorsHannah's Captivation: Cash Mobs (surprising and supporting local businesses)Shop CLEARSTEM and 15% off with the code GALSGUIDE at checkout---Welcome to The Gal's Guide — a weekly dating and lifestyle podcast created to empower radical self-love and bold relationships. Send a textThis episode brings you two Sundance documentary short films that touch on such timely issues that our filmmakers rushed to get them out as soon as possible. In La Tierra del Valor (The Home of the Brave), during a summer of grief and fear brought about by ice raids in Los Angeles, one small act of bravery brings a community of hope. Director (and return guest) Cristina Costantini and producer Alfie Koetter sit down with us to discuss how they met Nezza, the patriotism of immigrants, and how bravery feels a lot like fear. In short, FUCK ICE.Luigi is a short film about the cultural sensation (and obsession) following the murder charge of Luigi Mangione. Director (and return guest) Liza Mandelup shares why she was inspired to tell the story from this perspective, how she scouted online and in her own backyard of NYC for the subjects of her film, and our collective rage and frustration that has led us to this moment. Writer and director Morgan Cooper on turning a self-funded Bel-Air short into a series, building creative audacity before opportunity arrives, and staying resourceful across drafts, collaboration, and a children's picture book. You'll learn:Why “imperfect action” can be a practical antidote to creative paralysis, especially early in your craft. How he found a compelling dramatic lens by stripping away sitcom expectations and focusing on character archetypes and real-world stakes. What it can look like to invest commercial income back into self-initiated work to build a body of proof. Why “waiting for permission” often hides fear, and how starting anyway can change what's possible. Why the “angle” of your idea matters, and how recalibrating it can be the difference between a draft that stalls and a draft that lands. How identifying the “big question” of a story can give your scenes direction and your revisions momentum.Simple ways to keep the creative channel open using a notes app, project scrap bins, and a journaling method that functions like index cards. How collaboration becomes part of the craft when you treat writing as iterative perspective-building, not a solitary performance. What writing a picture book can teach about economy, structure, and building an arc inside tight page limits. How designing a kid-led mission around resourcefulness can create momentum and emotional payoff in short form.Resources & Links:

Emma Steiger brought her short film “Wait To Tell Mother” to Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2025 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Screenplay – Short Film, as well as the Filmmakers Awards for Outstanding Short Film – Drama and Outstanding Director- Short Film – Drama. Considering Emma was the director, writer, co-lead actor and one of the producers on the film, and it is no surprise that their name appears on two of those awards! Emma was a delightful presence at the festival and even tolerated my overly paternal response to the film. In this in-depth conversation, writer, filmmaker, and actress Clarissa Jacobson shares her remarkable journey from acting to screenwriting, and how creating her short film Lunch Ladies changed everything. From self-funding her first short to navigating festivals, building confidence, and finding her creative voice, Clarissa offers hard-earned wisdom for writers at every stage. Clarissa talks candidly about: Choosing screenwriting over acting and letting go of sunk costs Why making a short film can transform a writing career The brutal (and rewarding) realities of self-funding your work Lessons learned from eight years of promoting "Lunch Ladies" Comedy horror, collaboration, and trusting your intuition Finding the right creative partners & why writing together works Why writers gain more respect when they make something real This episode is a must-watch for screenwriters, indie filmmakers, and storytellers who feel stuck waiting for a break and are ready to bet on themselves instead.
This week we're unpacking the bizarre online conspiracy that Selena Gomez has been “cloned,” and why the theory says more about the internet than it does about her. We talk about the deeply rooted misogyny behind the panic whenever a woman's face changes, the fear of watching women age in real time, and the impossible standard that women must stay frozen, flawless, and familiar forever. At what point did natural evolution become suspicious? Plus, we talk about the only man we currently don't hate: Bad Bunny, Hannah shares why she's officially pressing pause on house hunting and thinking about building instead, and Emily tells the story of her unexpected run-in with Glen Powell.---Stream Hannah's album, PHASES!Watch Emily's Short Film, All We Were!Emily's Substack: third martini thoughts---Emily's Captivation: The Handmaid's TaleHannah's Captivation: Ella LangleyShop CLEARSTEM and 15% off with the code GALSGUIDE at checkout---Welcome to The Gal's Guide — a weekly dating and lifestyle podcast created to empower radical self-love and bold relationships. This week we're ditching the roses and leaning fully into Anti-Valentine's Day with a spicy conversation inspired by Emily's recent Substack essay: unpacking the cultural obsession with the “male loneliness epidemic” and asking whether men actually aren't lonely enough to change their behavior. We talk dating burnout, emotional labor, shifting expectations in modern relationships, and why so many women are opting out of traditional romance altogether. From internet discourse to real-life dating stories, we break down who's being asked to grow, who gets sympathy, and how Valentine's Day became less about love and more about accountability, boundaries, and rewriting the rules of connection.Ultimately...
