Welcome to episode #880 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #880. In a world where games are no longer just a source of entertainment, we find ourselves in a precarious situation. Warehouse workers are pitted against each other in virtual dragon races, their jobs hanging in the balance. Exhausted Uber drivers are baited with challenges to keep them on the road. Citizens in China are scored to ensure good behavior, and games with in-app purchases cleverly use achievements to drain your finances. In his lastest book, You've Been Played, game designer Adrian Hon exposes the insidious use of games and gamification as tools of exploitation by corporations, schools, and governments. These aren't optional games, but ones we're compelled to play, where losing carries severe consequences. Adrian's work is a powerful critique of a tech-centric world that attempts to mask misery as fun. It's a rallying cry for those who wish to retain their dignity and autonomy in a world increasingly dominated by coercive gamification. As the CEO and founder of Six to Start, he has co-created the world's most successful smartphone fitness game, Zombies, Run! His innovative approach to game design has led to other award-winning games such as We Tell Stories, which has been recognized at SXSW and showcased at prestigious venues like MOMA and the Design Museum. His previous book, A New History of the Future in 100 Objects, was published in 2020. Adrian also shares his insights on games through a monthly column for EDGE magazine. His journey in the gaming industry began at Mind Candy, where he served as Director of Play from 2004 to 2007. During his tenure, he designed and produced the Perplex City alternate reality game. His fascination with ARGs started in 2001 when he moderated the Cloudmakers community for The Beast, an ARG for Steven Spielberg's A.I. His academic background is as diverse as his professional one. He studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge, with a focus on experimental psychology and neuroscience. He even started a neuroscience degree at Oxford in 2003, but his passion for gaming led him to leave after a year to join Mind Candy. His journey is a testament to his belief in the power of games and their potential to shape our future (in both good and terrible ways). Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 49:49. Transhumanism has been a hotly-debated topic lately, but no one can even think about the spooky nature of living a posthuman existence. Posthumanism marks a careful rethinking of the dominant humanist or anthropocentric account of who “we” are as human beings. This is especially true in zombie and cyborg movies where replicants, androids and robots are depicted. These stories could be symbolic representations of contemporary global issues regarding the ever-growing masses of slum dwellers and refugees in the world today. Are zombies real? A Harvard biology PhD named Wade Davis went to Haiti to investigate the stories of voodoo priests turning people into “zombies” with a poison, and it turned out that the poison was tetrodotoxin - and it's real. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Visit betterhelp.com/DUBIOUS today to get 10% off your first month of therapy. Voodoo priests in Haiti make a poison concocted of human remains, snakes, frogs, sea worms, and most importantly... the venom of a puffer fish. The puffer fish venom is sort of the inverse of an anesthetic. Instead of dulling the pain, it dulls your ability to react to it. A person poisoned by the zombie powder is aware and conscious, but unable to move. Their metabolic rate slows to a crawl and they show signs of death, such as bluing of the extremities and lack of response to stimulus. And then when they're presumed dead and buried, the voodoo priest digs them up and tells them when they regain their freedom of movement that he has captured their soul, and they must serve him. This is a form of capital punishment in Haiti; a throwback to the colonial days when the only escape from bondage was death. But what if you can't die? What if you are resurrected and put back into bondage? This is the threat of the zombie poison: a fate worse than death, and it happened to the subject of Wade Davis' study. Clairvius Narcisse was pronounced dead and buried after he was poisoned by the zombie powder for the accused crime of stealing property from his brother after his parents died. The voodoo priest who poisoned him dug him up and sent him to work as a slave on a sugar plantation. If you like our content, please become a patron, you'll get all of our episodes ad-free. 1, 2 Not to be outdone, if you want to risk death from the zombie poison you can also get it by eating a puffer fish in Japan. In mild doses you get high and a little tingly, in extreme cases of eating too much puffer fish in Japan you might wind up like the man who was stuck in the morgue for 7 days, with everyone thinking he was dead. He woke up before being disemboweled and embalmed, thankfully... 3 All of this is still with us because of the late, great Wes Craven's movie about Wade Davis's trip to Haiti to study the zombie powder, called The Serpent and the Rainbow, it's one of the better 1980s horror genre films, check it out if you haven't seen it! The film and book also inspired the Godsmack song "Voodoo" over a decade later. 4, 5, 6 1. Gino Del Guerico. The Secrets of Haiti's Living Dead. Harvard Magazine. October 2017. ⇤2. Lakshmi Gandhi. “In the end, no place was truly safe.”Zombies Are On the March in Peninsula! It's no surprise that the studio and filmmakers wanted to return to the Train to Busan well after its initial success. And crafting a sequel that's less an immediate sequel but more of a story in the same universe taking place four years after the original sounded intriguing. But a bigger budget and expanded scope doesn't always mean better. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Train to Busan series with a conversation about Yeon Sang-ho's 2020 film Peninsula. Here's a hint at what we talk about. The film starts with a great premise. We're following two survivors, now living in Hong Kong four years after South Korea was taken over by zombies, as they're recruited by criminals to return to the country and find a truck full of money. Once they get there, however, things start shifting in ways that bring the story down. The plot contains many elements that are there simply for convenience. Even their own zombie rules, established in the last film and (mostly) adhered to, seem to be used as needed. With all of that, it seems like things aren't great but passable for a genre zombie film.Unfortunately, it goes downhill from there. We're introduced to some young daughters who drive like Dominic Toretto in sequences that are on par with video game action. We get the rogue militia catching survivors and running their own zombie survival games. The characters in the first film were archetypes, but largely felt human. Here, they feel like poorly written and performed video game characters. We do have a few that stand out and pique our interest. Our protagonist, for one, is easy to enjoy and watch go through this story. The political leader of the militia makes for an interesting psychological study, along with his sidekick. Even the mom who survived the attacks and made it this far with her daughters and father makes for an interesting story.Unfortunately, they're all saddled with a sloppy story and weak effects that just makes the whole thing a struggle. Still, it's awfully fun to talk about. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. “You're clearly an expert at leaving useless people behind.”The Zombie Hordes Are Headed Our Way!For his first live-action film, director Yeon Sang-ho decided to take on a horror film with confined locations, certainly something first time directors do when figuring the medium out. On the other hand, the film is a zombie movie with hundreds of zombiefied people, both on and off the high-speed train in the title. It's fair to say he went big. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our short series looking at the Train to Busan films, starting with Yeon's 2016 film Train to Busan. Here's a hint at what we talk about.First off, we love zombie movies so this is an easy one to talk about, particularly because Yeon gets so much right. It's a fun movie that sets things up quickly, then once the train ride starts and zombies appear, it never relents. The zombies themselves are well crafted and creepy in their movements. The film has some spectacular action set pieces as well.On top of that, however, we get some great characters that keep us engaged. Sure, they are fairly archetypal, but they're very likable. From our father-daughter pair at the heart of the story, to the husband and his pregnant wife, to the baseball player and his new cheerleader girlfriend, to the two older sisters, to the evil COO who can't get past his own self-interest, each character delivers an essential part of the story. There are some zombie rules developed in the world building that seem to be dropped or changed as the story needs them to be, but on the whole the movie's an exciting thrill ride. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. His academic interests include wisdom, mindfulness, meditation, relevance realization, general intelligence, and rationality. He is the author of Awakening from the Meaning Crisis Youtube series and co-author of Zombies in Western Culture: A 21st Century Crisis. In this episode I talk to John Vaervaeke about the meaning crisis. There is a growing number of people who are struggling to find purpose in life. Society seems to be losing touch of its humanity. John argues that we can address the meaning crisis by appreciating and grounding ourselves in reality. We can find relevance by deepening our relationship with the world and the people around us. In turn, this reverence affords us peace of mind, while recognizing the interconnection of all things. We also touch on the topics of transcendence, mattering, narcissism, spirituality and artificial intelligence. In a shocking development in the Daybell trial, Lori Vallow's text messages have been read aloud in court, revealing disturbing content related to sex, zombies, money, and murder. These messages offer a glimpse into the mindset of Vallow, one of the key suspects in the case involving the disappearance and death of her children. The texts provide additional context for the prosecution's argument that Vallow and her accomplice, Chad Daybell, manipulated others with their bizarre religious beliefs. The revelation of these messages is likely to have a significant impact on the ongoing trial and the public's perception of the defendants.
Sarc Fighter: Living with Sarcoidosis and other rare diseases
Rebecca Stanfel is a Sarc Fighter who also happens to be a wonderful writer -- to the point that national publications share her work. She recently published a blog in the Huffington Post, where she talked about the pain from Sarcoidosis that was so bad, only opioids would give her relief. In a world where we now often shudder at the mention of these addictive drugs, Stanfel wrote that they were her only path forward and that they serve a necessary purpose in certain situations -- including hers. That is not to say it wasn't a struggle or that it was easy to wean herself from the medication. It wasn't.
