An article published back in 1992 would spark a bidding war in Hollywood. Nothing unusual there. That article would lead to Ridley Scott, Jodie Foster and Robert Redford signing up for a big, expensive movie - a movie that never got made. And it never got made because of 1995's Outbreak. Three movies meanwhile had failed to come together in a row for filmmakers the Spierig brothers after they scored a hit with Daybreakers. But they had a project in mind, based on a Robert A Heinlein (Starship Troopers) short story. It'd lead to Predestination - but there was the small matter of starting work without securing the rights to the story... The stories of both are told in this episode... After a seven year hiatus Jigsaw made a return to theaters with, um, "Jigsaw." This week Mike, Ari, and Nichole discuss whether the Spierig's attempt at going back to basics and eschewing the more over the top gore and torture elements of the franchise worked in drawing new and returning fans back to the series. We also discuss the nature of John's early game, whether these traps were simpler and more winnable, and if John being in an early stage of his cancer made this so. We talk about the series introducing yet another disciple, where horror was at in the by this point in the decade and whether Saw was still relevant. It's a big episode as always, hope you enjoy.
POP ART, WHERE WE FIND THE POP CULTURE IN ART AND THE ART IN POP CULTURE. TIMELESS: Join me and podcaster and movie lover Nick Rehak of Rehak Radio as we discuss two time travel movies, Looper and Predestination. Nick was previous a guest of Pop Art for Ep 76 where we discussed two horror films revolving around hotels—The Shining and The Innkeepers—The guests check in, but do they check out. Check it out. Not happy with the way things are now? Would you like a change of pace? Of place? How about a change of time?…Sounds like it's time for Episode 95 of Pop Art, where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. I am your “This time travel crap, just fries your brain like an egg” host, Howard Casner. For this episode, I am happy to welcome back, podcaster and movie lover Nick Rehak, who has chosen as his film the Rian Johnson time travel movie, Looper, while I have chosen the Spierig brothers time travel movie, Predestination, both films not just about time travel, but movies about people encountering themselves and ironically affecting their own lives. And in this episode we answer such questions as: What is it about time travel movies anyway, why are they so popular? Are both movies Greek tragedy? Is Rian Johnson a hipster? What are the basic themes explored by time travel movies and these movies in particular? How was Looper changed for release in China and why? What's intriguing about the bathroom signs in Predestination? What happened on Joseph Gordon-Levitt's 30th birthday? How does the Chernobyl Power Plant fit in?
Would you have guessed it? Saw: The Final Chapter was by no means a final chapter of anything. Just 7 years after that release, Jigsaw came out in 2017 and is the first and only film in the Saw Franchise that we see directed by the Spierig brothers. This film, starring Matt Passmore, Tobin Bell, Callum Keith Rennie, and Hannah Emily Anderson, is an attempt to close up some loose ends that were created with Saw: The Final Chapter, which was released in 2010. Join us as we discuss how this film scratched the itch that we had been experiencing since the last release we got to experience. You can check out new episodes every Friday on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Please rate and review when you have the time to!

How well do Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook do in bringing this story to life? How close did the Spierig brothers' script adhere to Robert A. Heinlein's original short story? Is there a logic to the time travel rules here? Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Tune in to this week's show to find out these answers and more!

"We were born into this job." Time travel stories come in all shapes and sizes – some are more focused on the fun and entertainment. Others use the conceit to allow for explorations of themes and ideas. Robert A. Heinlein’s short story “—All You Zombies—” is more the latter, and the Spierig brothers – Michael and Peter – do a great job adapting it for the silver screen with their film Predestination. And while it’s easy to get lost in time loops and find fault in rules and story construction, this film is an easy one to enjoy with the paradoxes presented because of the themes and concepts it develops. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we conclude our time travel series with the Spierig brothers’ 2014 film Predestination. We talk about the nature of the film and why it works, even if the film does spend the first half of its running time setting things up. We look at the meaning of the word ‘predestination’ and what it means in context with this film and the ideas put forth. We chat about Ethan Hawke (busiest man in Hollywood) and how great he is here, and also about Sarah Snook, who really puts forth an incredibly challenging performance and nails every bit of it. We debate the strength of Noah Taylor’s character and if he’s really necessary for the story. And we discuss what the Spierig brothers bring to the table here and how well they work as writers, producers and directors, but also visual effects artists and composers. There’s a lot to discuss in a film like this, and we have a fantastic time unpacking it. Check out the movie then tune in! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The Australian filmmakers, the Spierig brothers, have made a pretty good mark in genre cinema. Their zombie black comedy brought them attention and allowed them to do the fairly popular Daybreakers, a new take on vampires. In 2014 they did the very interesting sci-fi thriller Predestination and only last year helmed the highly successful Jigsaw. Now, only months after the release of Jigsaw, their latest film, Winchester, starring one of today’s top actresses, Helen Mirren, was released in early February to some interesting buzz. Based upon the actual Winchester mansion in San Jose, California, the story behind the mansion and its original owner is a story unto itself. Sarah Winchester was the heir to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, famous for its very successful rifle, the Winchester rifle. Sarah, during her time at the mansion, had built room after room with very true rhyme or reason. Most famously there is a set of stairs that lead to nowhere. An interesting premise for a movie indeed. So the story begins with Sarah believing ghosts have begun to haunt her, all victims from tragic deaths by the rifle. Her executives are worried that she may be going insane. Hiring a doctor, played by Jason Clarke, they have him go to evaluate her. So begins our movie. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new entrance to the ghost story film and gives their critique. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

#134 Spierig Brothers Interview: Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built Hi, everybody. We're here at the Winchester House, San Jose, California. I've been asked to join the CBS Films team (thank you!) to interview film directors, Peter & Michael Spierig. The new film, titled, “Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built.” was filmed, in part, here at the Winchester house. The film is inspired by the real events, led by Sarah Winchester, heiress of the Winchester Repeating Rifle fortune. Sarah Winchester was told by a reader, a psychic that all the dead killed by the Winchester Repeating Rifle, throughout time, will haunt her for all her life on earth. Sarah Winchester then built this house, famously with doors to nowhere, staircases to nowhere, hallways and entries to nowhere. The film stars Helen Mirren as Sarah Winchester. The Winchester House is famous throughout the world, and we're joined tonight by Michael and Peter Spierig. The film is amazing. Enjoy.
We saw Jigsaw and then barely talked about the film. Spoilers for the 8th film in the franchise.
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. All you zombies. Well, that's the name of a short story by one of the most important writers in the 20th century. The author, Robert Heinlein, was a leader in the science fiction tale. His career spanned decades and encompassed the golden age of sci-fi literature. All You Zombies though was actually a time travel story and the title in some ways was more a metaphor of people and their loss of self. A pair of Australian film makers, the Spierig brothers, best known for the horror sci-fi film Daybreakers, are back with their take on the Heinlein tale, remaining the story in its movie format as Predestination. The film stars Ethan Hawke and newcomer Sarah Snook in what some have said is a star making performance. When a bartender in a local Manhattan lounge serves drinks to the various regulars, a stranger enters and during their conversation admits he is the author of a self help column in the local paper. When the two make a bet over a bottle of whiskey, we soon discover that the bartender may be a lot more than what he says he is and the stranger's story may lead to something much bigger than any of them would ever think. Though a VOD release and having only a minor theater run, the film has been unanimously received as a success by most critics. With its varying twists and larger plot that revolves around an unknown terrorist, the film has brought much talk on the internet of what it really is all about. Dark Discussions tries to tackle the elaborate plot and finally give their opinion of what are some saying is the first great genre film of 2015. Last fall, I had the opportunity to interview the writer-director team of Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig for their Fantastic Fest premiere of the vampire film Daybreakers. We talked about casting, creature effects and the cost of contact lenses. You can listen to the interview here, but be warned, a few plot points are touched on, so there may be spoilers. For brevity, I had to cut out part of the conversation, including a Emily Hagins love fest. Apparently the Spierig brothers are well aware of Austin's youngest auteur, and they did spend some time talking with her at the Fantastic Fest closing-night party. Daybreakers opens in Austin theaters on Friday, January 8. Keep an eye out for Debbie's review later today.
