This week, Scott sits down with his longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Alia Crum—one of the world’s leading researchers on the science of mindsets. Dr. Crum’s groundbreaking work investigates how our subjective beliefs and interpretations can produce real, measurable changes in behavior, physiology, and psychological well-being. Drawing inspiration from research on the placebo effect, Dr. Crum explores how mindsets influence everything from health and stress to performance and interpersonal effectiveness. She and Scott discuss the mechanisms through which mindsets shape objective reality, and how deliberately shifting our mental lenses can lead to meaningful transformation in our lives and organizations. This conversation is especially personal for Scott, who first met Dr. Crum during their graduate school days at Yale. They revisit early philosophical chats while highlighting how far her research—and its real-world implications—has come.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What if the words we speak over our kids aren't just communication, but are actually creation? In this episode of Facing in the Dark, Wayne Stender and Dr. Kathy tackle a new claim from psychologist Dr. Chelsea Haug-Zavaleta that children should receive 100 compliments a day to thrive emotionally. Dr. Kathy challenges the research, explaining that it's not about the number of compliments, it's about the ratio of affirmation to correction and the meaning behind our words. She offers practical insights for balancing affirmation with healthy boundaries, showing how kids form identity through the voices they trust most. Together, Wayne and Dr. Kathy unpack what it means to parent fragile and resilient kids, share how correction can build character rather than shame, and connect the science of affirmation to the biblical power of blessing from Genesis 27. This episode reminds us that spoken love forms lasting truth, and that a few sincere words can build what a hundred empty praises never could.

Want a candid look at how women build durable careers in one of the world's toughest industries? We sit down with three semiconductor leaders - Nitza Bosoco, Anne Meixner and Julia Freer - who share how early encouragement, gritty problem solving, and clear communication turned curiosity into impact. From summer jobs at national labs and early days at IBM to leading operations, test, and sustainability initiatives, their stories show why diverse voices aren't just nice to have—they're a competitive advantage. We dig into the real moments: being the only woman in a test engineering group, pushing for inclusive language that actually changes culture, and navigating career pivots to balance family, flexibility, and ambition. You'll hear how mentorship and sponsorship differ—and why you need both—plus specific tactics to make them work inside fast-moving chip companies. One unforgettable segment starts with a five-minute crash-and-burn presentation and becomes a two-year, teamwide communication overhaul that turns shy engineers into confident presenters ready for conferences and boardrooms.Across materials science, advanced packaging, test and inspection, and sustainability, the thread is clear: communication is a core engineering skill. Writing reflective status reports, designing slides for decisions, and telling a tight technical story can accelerate yield improvements, align manufacturing and supply chain, and win executive support. We also tackle today's DEI headwinds with a practical lens—keep the pipeline alive, promote from within, and build programs that outlast policy shifts. What can the past teach believers about how God continues to move today? Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar walk through the story of the church, showing how each era reflects God's ongoing work beyond the book of Acts. From Paul's conversion to the Council of Nicea and the compassion of Basil, the guys highlight moments where faith inspired action and truth triumphed over compromise. They warn how the fall of Rome and the rise of worldly influence pushed the church toward roles it was never meant to hold, reminding believers that Scripture alone remains the foundation of truth. As they explore the Protestant Reformation, the guys point to Martin Luther's bold stand for Scripture, faith, and grace, which restored the heart of Christianity. Through these pivotal events, they encourage believers to see history as a reminder of God's faithfulness and a call to live out the gospel with renewed conviction today.Send us a textThanks for listening! What happens when enterprise AI moves faster than the data foundations meant to support it? That question guided my conversation with Sumit Mehra, CTO and Co-Founder of Tredence, who joined me while travelling between customer meetings on the US West Coast. Sumit has a clear view of what is coming next, and he believes we are entering a phase he calls data Darwinism. In his view, the next stage of AI advantage will not be won by the companies with the most models or the flashiest demos, but by those with the strongest data habits. Clean, governed, connected data is now the primary fuel for autonomous decision systems, and the enterprises that fail to address this will struggle to move past surface level gains. As we unpacked this shift, it became obvious how much of the real work in AI has only just begun. Over the years, Tredence built a reputation for solving the last mile of analytics by bringing insights out of slide decks and into the hands of the people doing the work. Sumit described that early chapter with a sense of pride, but he was quick to point out that another transition is already here. With agents now influencing and making decisions across supply chains, forecasting, and customer experience, enterprises are moving from reviewing insights to reviewing decisions. That shift demands stronger data platforms, tighter governance, and a cultural adjustment that many organisations are still wrestling with. Sumit spoke openly about how teams need support to trust agent driven outcomes, and how the leadership layer plays a major role in closing the long standing divide between business and technical groups. Our discussion also moved into the rise of real time decision systems, the move toward unified data platforms, and how vertical AI is reshaping expectations inside industries that rely on precision. Whether it was supply chain visibility, marketing personalisation, or the growing need for credible governance models, Sumit emphasised that organisations can no longer rely on siloed data or fragmented strategies. As Tredence expands deeper into regulated industries through its acquisition of Further Advisory, the work ahead touches everything from finance to healthcare. It left me thinking about how ready most companies truly are for this next phase, where every agent is only as reliable as the data beneath it. Where do you stand on data Darwinism, and how prepared do you think your own organisation is for what comes next? In this episode, Zvi Hirschfield and Rabbi Raphael Polisuk explore Parshat Toldot through the lens of prayer, blessing, and the extraordinary power of human speech. They discuss Yitzchak's deeply active model of prayer—la'ator, a language of turning reality—and how the rabbis imagine his tefillah transforming both himself and God. The episode then turns to the drama of the blessings, asking why words matter so profoundly in Torah and how language can create, heal, or harm.

Connor Griffin, Minister of Discipleship- Lifegroups
In this sermon from James 5:7-12, Pastor Jared Richard explores how the promise of Christ's return should shape our lives and ministry. Drawing from Jesus' parable in Luke 19 about a nobleman who entrusts resources to his servants before departing, Pastor Richard emphasizes that Jesus has entrusted us with His kingdom work and will one day return to evaluate our faithfulness. When we establish our hearts on Christ's return—intentionally dwelling on this reality—it produces spiritual fruit, particularly patience and steadfastness during hardship. The sermon clarifies that Jesus' return will be unmistakable, unpredictable, unparalleled, and unstoppable. For believers, this day should inspire joy rather than fear, as Christ's posture toward faithful servants is one of commendation, not condemnation. Pastor Richard concludes by challenging Bay Leaf Baptist Church to use every resource God has entrusted to them for kingdom purposes, so they might be found faithful when Christ returns. What happens when belonging is tied to your bank account? This piece shows how cult-like religious environments turn “sacrificial giving” into financial control, leaving money scripts like “If I don't give, I'll be rejected.” Through client stories—including retirees pressured to keep giving—it highlights how loss of community magnifies money fears. This isn't happening tomorrow, though—it's a process that could take 200-300 million years! When it does happen, it'll totally change climates, ecosystems, and even the way we navigate the planet. When Australian writer Hannah Kent first travelled to Iceland at the age of 17, she had never seen snow before, and didn't speak a word of Icelandic. Living in a remote part of Iceland during the dark winter, she fell in love with the country, its landscape and its people. This experience inspired her bestselling novel, Burial Rites. She has now returned to the country that formed her identity as a writer, with a new memoir, Always Home, Always Homesick. For this episode, she spoke to host Danielle Sands about her deep love of Iceland's landscape, its traditions and its people, how you can understand the history and culture of a country through its language, and how learning a new language can alter and enrich a writer's own identity. Hannah Kent is the author of Burial Rites, Good People and Devotion. Her memoir about her lifelong connection to Iceland, Always Home, Always Homesick, is out now. It is said that when Benjamin Franklin was an American Minister in Paris, he spent an evening with a group of intellectuals at a time when literary circles were known for being agnostic or even atheistic. He was called on to contribute to the entertainment and read from what he called a “charming bit of literature.” He proceeded to read the entire Book of Ruth. The normally skeptical audience was delighted and wanted to know where in ancient history such a beautiful and idealistic story could be found. They were shocked to find out it had been copied from the Bible. The story of Ruth is indeed beautiful as an endearing account of loyalty, faith and divine providence. The account explores how Ruth's faithful decisions amid hardship reflect profound spiritual lessons. After the deaths of her husband and two sons, Naomi decides to return to Bethlehem. Ruth, her Moabite daughter-in-law, chose loyalty over comfort and insisted on going with her into a land of a diversly different culture. Ruth's declaration, “Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God” marks a pivotal moment of voluntary discipleship, echoing the call to follow Christ. Naomi's selflessness and Ruth's humility set the stage for divine providence to unfold. Ruth's decision to glean in Boaz's field, seemingly by chance, revealed God's guiding hand. Boaz, a wealthy and godly man, noticed Ruth's integrity and ensured her safety and provision. His actions mirrored Christ's care for his followers, offering not just sustenance but honor and protection. Key takeaways from this amazing account include strong insights into the three main people in the account: Ruth's loyalty and humility positioned her to receive God's abundant blessings. Naomi's wise and selfless guidance allowed Ruth to make a free, faith-driven choice. Boaz's integrity and generosity reflect Christlike leadership and compassion. The story further emphasizes that: God can work through imperfect decisions to bring about redemption. Humble service and steadfast commitment open the door to spiritual abundance. Providential “happenings” often disguise divine orchestration. Ultimately, Ruth's story illustrates how one person's faithful choice can ripple across generations, shaping legacy and revealing God's character. Her journey from foreign widow to honored matriarch in Israel's lineage of Jesus himself reminds believers that dedication, humility and trust in God's timing yield lasting impact.
If you've ever been told to "just eat less and move more," or struggled with weight despite doing everything "right," this episode will validate your experience and challenge the harmful myths that still exist—even in medicine. In this deeply personal episode, I will share what happened when a colleague dismissed obesity as "lifestyle driven" rather than a chronic disease. Her response is a powerful reminder that this condition is far more complex than willpower. I will also open up about my own decades-long journey—including training for two full Ironmans and seven marathons—and why even with extreme dedication, I never reached a "normal" BMI. My story, combined with my clinical expertise, will reveal the biological, genetic, environmental, and social factors that make obesity a chronic disease affecting millions. Episode Highlights: Why 40-70% of obesity cases are driven by genetics, not lifestyle choices The real struggles patients face: severe calorie restriction, exercising 6-7 days a week, and still not losing weight Medical conditions and medications that cause weight gain—from PCOS to antidepressants How food deserts, safety concerns, and financial barriers create obstacles beyond personal control Four practical ways to show compassion to someone living with obesity Connect with Dr. Alicia Shelly: Website | drshellymd.com Facebook | www.facebook.com/drshellymd Instagram | @drshellymd Linked In | www.linkedin.com/in/drshellymd Twitter | @drshellymd About Dr. Alicia Shelly Dr. Alicia Shelly was raised in Atlanta, GA. Overview: We explore how immigration status profoundly impacts healthcare access, from barriers to benefits and financial assistance, to the psychological toll experienced by patients and families navigating fears of deportation. We discuss mental health stigma within Spanish-speaking communities, challenges with behavioral health access, and how cultural concepts like susto and diapression intersect with chronic illness management. We share stories illustrating the power of validation, trust-building, and prioritizing patient agendas over rigid clinical checklists, while also confronting systemic constraints like limited appointment time and the importance of eye contact and genuine human connection in care. Three Takeaways: The Weight of Immigration Status on WellbeingRose describes how the constant fear of deportation, inability to access benefits, and repeated bureaucratic hurdles profoundly impact patients' mental and physical health. It's not just paperwork—it's a psychological burden that affects daily decisions, engagement with healthcare, and willingness to seek care in the first place. Empowerment as a Counterbalance to Systemic HarmRose Cano pointed out that healthcare interactions may be one of the few places where patients from marginalized backgrounds experience empowerment. With so much belittlement and exclusion happening in the rest of their lives, every clinical and supportive conversation must focus on restoring dignity and agency. Mental Health: Language, Stigma, and Structural GapsThe conversation delved into how translating mental health concepts is challenging, both linguistically and culturally. Terms like “depression” and “anxiety” don't always resonate. She emphasized the deep stigma in both English and Spanish-speaking communities, compounded by lack of access (waitlists, insurance issues) and by the prioritization of survival needs over mental wellbeing. In this episode, the guys discuss the importance of kids stories for cultivating virtue in our children. They discuss the issues with many modern kids stories, the value of many forms of children's tales, and the importance of storytelling for faith and character formation. What kind of world are we showing our kids through the stories we tell them? What kind of people will they become if they model what those stories show? How do the movies, books, and lessons we teach our children shape their view of the world? How can Christian parents be intentional about captivating the imaginations of their kids with good stories? Welcome to the conversation!
Introduction: If you gained everything the world had to offer — comfort, success, wealth, fame — would it satisfy your soul?Solomon did just that. And his conclusion? “It was meaningless.” This raises a serious question: What good is more, if it doesn't lead to something eternal? Problem Statement: We're conditioned to chase more — more income, more upgrades, more lifestyle. But “more” without mission leads to spiritual emptiness. Without purpose, prosperity becomes vanity. God offers us something better: purposeful prosperity, rooted in contentment and eternal impact. Main Points: Success Without Purpose Feeds Emptiness– Ecclesiastes 2:11 – “All of it was meaningless…”– The pursuit of more doesn't fill the soul. Purpose Transforms Possessions into Mission– 1 Timothy 6:18–19 – “Be rich in good deeds… lay up treasure for the coming age.”– Prosperity is meant to be invested in what lasts. Contentment Creates Freedom to Give– Philippians 4:12 – “I have learned the secret of being content…”– Content people give more joyfully and purposefully. Life Applications: Re-evaluate what “more” means in your life.Does it mean mission or just maintenance? Create financial and emotional margin.Simplicity creates space to give, love, and serve. Practice daily gratitude and generosity. They go hand in hand. Reflection Questions: What “more” are you chasing, and why? How does contentment affect your giving habits? Where can your prosperity make an eternal difference Conclusion: More will never be enough if your soul is disconnected from purpose. But when you pursue God's mission with what you've been given, you'll find that “enough” becomes more than enough. Prayer: God of wisdom and abundance, teach us to define success by Your standards, not the world's. Break our addiction to accumulation. Help us see the joy of simplicity and the beauty of contentment. Let our resources serve Your mission and not our egos. Shape our hearts for eternity, and align our lives with Your purpose. Amen.
The DeLorean's still parked under the blue lights — and in Episode 2 of Shot of Nostalgia: Season 7 – The SmackDown Six Era, we're stepping into the stretch where SmackDown built its identity. Acefield Retro breaks down Blueprint of Greatness, when Paul Heyman's creative direction started to take form. By late 2002, Raw leaned on promos and spectacle, while SmackDown focused on matches that told stories and defined characters. This episode features a watch-along of Edge vs. Eddie Guerrero (No DQ, 9/26/02) — a match that shows exactly how the SmackDown Six style came to life: physical, precise, and built on timing and trust. Also covered: • Angle vs. Mysterio at SummerSlam 2002 — A showcase of what WWE's new in-ring standard could be. • Angle & Benoit vs. Edge & Rey (8/29 SmackDown) — The match that revealed the SmackDown Six chemistry. • Los Guerreros form as a team — Eddie and Chavo add humor, arrogance, and cohesion to the division. • Tag Team Championship Tournament announcement — The moment Heyman's structure became official. By September, SmackDown wasn't trying to compete with Raw — it had its own rhythm, purpose, and storytelling approach. Presented by The Turnbuckle Tavern, where nostalgia meets conversation. With trust in institutions shaken and key details long buried, calls grow for transparency, accountability, and honest inquiry. Truth, not theatrics, becomes essential to preserving liberty and restoring confidence in public life at a moment when unity depends on clarity...
