What if the words we speak over our kids aren't just communication, but are actually creation? In this episode of Facing in the Dark, Wayne Stender and Dr. Kathy tackle a new claim from psychologist Dr. Chelsea Haug-Zavaleta that children should receive 100 compliments a day to thrive emotionally. Dr. Kathy challenges the research, explaining that it's not about the number of compliments, it's about the ratio of affirmation to correction and the meaning behind our words. She offers practical insights for balancing affirmation with healthy boundaries, showing how kids form identity through the voices they trust most. Together, Wayne and Dr. Kathy unpack what it means to parent fragile and resilient kids, share how correction can build character rather than shame, and connect the science of affirmation to the biblical power of blessing from Genesis 27. This episode reminds us that spoken love forms lasting truth, and that a few sincere words can build what a hundred empty praises never could.

Most people are exposed to multiple food additives every day because they're built into common packaged foods, not just occasional treats Children receive a higher additive load from the same foods adults eat, which places more strain on developing systems tied to growth, metabolism, and brain function Food additives are consumed as mixtures that stack across meals, even though safety limits are usually set for single ingredients in isolation "New and improved" food formulations often replace one additive with another instead of reducing overall exposure Shifting daily eating patterns toward whole foods and simpler ingredient lists lowers additive exposure without constant label checking
Marc Elliott shares his controversial perspective on NXIVM, arguing that media narratives have distorted the truth about Keith Raniere and the organization. Living with severe Tourette syndrome for 20 years, Elliott found relief through NXIVM techniques when traditional medical approaches failed. He challenges the dominant narrative by examining inconsistencies in accusers stories, questioning the lack of due process in the trial, and arguing that salacious headlines and the MeToo movement created a climate where critical questioning was discouraged. Elliott explains how easy it is to be a victim in modern culture, the importance of evaluating evidence rather than emotions, and why he believes that prejudicial tactics corrupted the judicial process. This conversation explores media manipulation, the ethics of narrative control, and the uncomfortable space between believing victims and demanding evidence. Hosted on Acast. What happens when you stop numbing, stop performing, and finally face what's been running the show beneath the surface? In this powerful episode of The Greatness Machine, Darius Mirshahzadeh reconnects with Jesse Elder for a raw conversation about sovereignty, emotional excavation, and becoming a whole human being. Jesse shares what led him to step away from business, confront long-standing patterns, and do deep embodiment work that uncovered how anger, sadness, and abandonment have shaped his life and leadership. Together, they explore why growth has no finish line, how emotional resilience is built through presence rather than avoidance, and the difference between real inner work and performative vulnerability. The conversation also weaves in faith, spirituality, masculine conditioning, and Jesse's philosophy on future-self alignment and “time piercing.” In this episode, Darius and Jesse will discuss: (00:00) Diving Deep: Personal Journeys and Self-Discovery (02:46) The Illusion of Destination: Understanding Life's Continuum (05:38) Navigating Emotions: The Onion of Self-Discovery (08:11) Sovereignty and Energy: Reclaiming Personal Power (11:18) Embodiment Work: Making Friends with Emotions (13:58) The Role of Faith and Spirituality in Personal Growth (16:45) The Game of Life: Levels and Challenges (19:18) Time Piercing: Accessing Past and Future Selves (22:09) The Power of Memory: Transforming Past Experiences (25:19) Creating a New Narrative: The Art of Reframing (28:07) The Time Piercer Tour: A Journey of Self-Discovery Jesse Elder is an action philosopher, performance coach, and motivational speaker who helps people create lives of freedom, purpose, and fulfillment. Helen and Vera share their experience, expertise and stories to explore why clean water, the blue thread that connects us all, is fundamental to everyday wellbeing, long-term prosperity and securing climate justice. They discuss the practical ways a sustainable, water-secure future is already being built, alongside the challenges that remain. Because resilient water systems aren't just pipes and pumps – they're people, ecosystems, and trust. As we enter a new year, the months ahead can feel long and uncertain. Yet for many of us, one thing we rarely have to think about is the clean water flowing from our taps. That isn't the case for everyone, but it could be. Just £5 a month over a year can buy 5 standpipe taps so children like Nesteline, and her whole community, can have clean water for years to come. Please donate £5 a month today and help us to work alongside communities to bring clean water to everyone, everywhere. Visit wateraid.org/uk/intelligence to donate and find out more. The Panthers continue to struggle as injuries pile up, forcing new faces into the lineup and showing how difficult sustained success is after three straight Finals runs. Conversation shifts to the Heat and the growing Giannis trade buzz, with Joe and Hollywood agreeing Miami should do whatever it takes to land him, and the need for a true superstar with a wide open eastern conference. The Dolphins retain several coaches from last season as the new staff takes shape, with former DC Anthony Weaver heading to Baltimore, and the quarterback discussion heats up with Malik Willis, Aaron Rodgers, and Marcus Mariota all in play. Hollywood's Headlines rounds out the hour with NBC broadcasting from Alcatraz for Super Bowl pregame, Terry Rozier's contract news, Kim Kardashian reportedly dating Lewis Hamilton, and South Florida farmers warning of rising produce prices due to the cold.
The Dolphins retain several coaches from last season as the new staff begins to take shape, while former DC Anthony Weaver lands in Baltimore and, in Joe's view, is destined to be a head coach someday. The quarterback conversation takes center stage with speculation about Malik Willis, a mention of Aaron Rodgers given his connection to QB coach Nathaniel Hackett, and even a look at Marcus Mariota as a possibility. The discussion also highlights how quickly the Patriots turned things around from four wins to a Super Bowl appearance, along with Sam Darnold's remarkable journey to the big game after bouncing around the league.

Foundation Executive Director Ryan McClure shared updates on those efforts and his hopes for how they could serve the St. Louis community.
Guest Heather Lende is the author of four books centered on her life in Haines, Alaska: If You Lived Here, I'd Know Your Name, Take Good Care of the Garden and the Dogs, Find the Good: Life Lessons from a Small-town Obituary Writer, and, most recently, Of Bears and Ballots, about her adventures in local politics. Heather served as Alaska Writer Laureate from 2021-2023, has an honorary Ph.D in Humane Letters from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and is the recipient of the Middlebury College Alumni Award. Summary In this, my 400th episode, I sit down with writer Heather Lende to talk about how she approaches her craft and what it means to write from, and for, a real community. Living in the small town of Haines, Alaska (pop ~2000), Heather sees writing less as performance and more as an act of careful observation, listening, and responsibility. Our conversation touches on her long-running obituary column, which requires her to listen carefully, get the details right, and tell people's stories with humility and care. She sees herself as "an observer of life," while her careful attention to people and their details has earned her the label of "story catcher." We talk about what changes when you write about people you know—or at least know of. We explore what I call Heather's nonlinear writing process, her discomfort with neat conclusions, and how grief, memory, and daily observation shape her work. We also explore doubt, discipline, and the tension between creative ambition and ordinary life. Throughout the conversation, writing emerges as a way of staying connected—to place, to people, and to the small, meaningful moments that make up a life. We dive deeply into the story "Alaskans Dear" from her book, If You Lived Here, I'd Know Your Name, to understand her writing process and what it means to live in a small town. The Essential Point Storytelling for Heather is not just creative work, but a relational act that binds her to the community she serves. In both the United States and France, each side of the legal battle over same-sex marriage and parenthood relied heavily on experts. Despite the similarity of issues, however, lawmakers in each country turned to different sets of authorities: from economists and psychoanalysts to priests and ordinary people. They even prized different types of expertise—empirical research in the United States versus abstract theory in France.Exploring the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States and France, Michael Stambolis-Ruhstorfer sheds new light on the power of experts to influence high-stakes democratic debates. Drawing on extensive interviews and ethnographic observation, Michael Stambolis-Ruhstorfer traces the divergences between the two countries, showing why some experts are ubiquitous in one but absent in the other. He argues that lawmakers, judges, lawyers, journalists, and activists covet something only experts can provide: the credibility and aura of authority, or “expert capital,” which they deploy to advance their agendas. Expert capital is not derived from scientific or technical merit alone but is produced through cultural norms, material resources, and social relationships, which vary greatly across national contexts.Through the story of the fight over gay rights, By the Power Vested in Me: How Experts Shape Same-Sex Marriage Debates (Columbia UP, 2025) reveals how and why certain experts—but not others—obtain the authority to shape public opinion and policy. At a time of soaring public distrust in experts, this book offers new ways to understand the contested political role of expertise and its consequences. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Sociology at William Penn University, where he specializes in the cultural and interpretive study of space, behavior, and identity. His scholarship examines how designed environments shape social interaction, connectedness, and moral life across diverse settings. He is the author of The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle: Floatzilla (Lexington Books, 2023) and Community Media Representations of Place and Identity at Tug Fest: Reconstructing the Mississippi River (Lexington Books, 2022). His current research projects include the study of escape rooms as emotion-structured environments, temporal urban environments in rural historical towns, student experiences of hanging out and being at home while at college and university, and a more recent study on the making of rodeo. We're so busy watching everyone else—scrolling feeds, comparing ourselves to other leaders, checking what the competition is doing—that we've become incredibly others-aware and dangerously self-unaware. Self-awareness isn't a buzzword. It's the difference between walking into a meeting grounded or bringing your frustration, anxiety, and chaos with you—and watching it cascade to everyone around you. Here's the truth: as goes the leader, so goes the team. Your mood changes rooms. Your anxiety creates anxiety. Your groundedness brings clarity. In this episode, we're diving into the third sphere of leadership that most people ignore: how your emotions, your wiring, and your weaknesses are impacting the people you lead. Whether you realize it or not. Since Daniel Goleman published his work on emotional intelligence, self-awareness has been everywhere. It's in every leadership book, every conference, every corporate training. But here's the irony: we're at an all-time high for talking about self-awareness and an all-time low for actually practicing it. Why? Because we're too busy being others-aware. Always looking at what everyone else is doing. Always comparing. Always feeling behind. This episode cuts through the noise and gives you three practical aspects of self-awareness that will change how you lead: What You'll Learn: Why being "others-aware" is making you dangerously self-unaware—and how to fix it Social contagion: the psychological reality that your mood spreads to your team whether you want it to or not The space between stimulus and response—and why mastering this one thing prevents unnecessary blowups How to identify your emotional triggers before they derail your day (and a real story of how this saved a family evening) Why context determines the course: how your energy and encouragement levels shape every conversation Your assets vs. your liabilities: understanding what work energizes you and what work drains you Patrick Lencioni's Working Genius framework and why it's a game-changer for understanding your wiring The six types: geniuses, frustrations, and competencies—and how to identify yours Why it's not the amount of work burning you out, it's the type of work (and what to do about it) Drains and fills: how to design your days around what gives you energy Why some leaders love conferences and others absolutely hate them (it's all about wiring) How to build a team that complements your strengths and covers your weaknesses Key Insight: Most leaders think they're burned out because they're doing too much work. The reality? You're doing the wrong type of work for your wiring. If you spent eight hours a day doing spreadsheets when you're wired for ideation, you'd be burned out in weeks. If you're wired for details and you're forced to brainstorm all day, same result. Self-awareness means knowing your drains and your fills—and designing your role around both. The Three Aspects of Self-Awareness: Emotions - How my emotions impact others Assets - What energizes and fulfills me (my wiring, my geniuses) Liabilities - What drains me (my frustrations, my weaknesses) Reflection Questions: What is one situation that brings you emotions that are unhealthy or unfair to the people around you? What are a few assets or parts of your wiring that you need to be utilizing more in your role? What are some liabilities you need to name to your team—and how can you do less of those things? A self-aware leader can serve others well with full awareness of who they are and who they're not. This is identity work. You cannot be all things. You are not good at all things. And you cannot compare off somebody else's paper and expect to lead like them. https://wels2.blob.core.windows.net/daily-devotions/20260128dev.mp3 Listen to Devotion “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” Matthew 4:19 Come, Follow Me “Follow me.” Those two words changed Andrew and Peter’s lives forever. Up to that point, they were regular, ordinary men working at their job. But then, Jesus came to them and changed their lives forever. Notice that Jesus does not say to them, “Become something extraordinary, and then, come, follow me.” He does not demand specific qualifications, spiritual maturity, or proven obedience. Instead, he calls them as they are. And he promises that he will change them: “I will make you…” The power to change lives exists not in the disciples themselves, but in the Word of Jesus that creates what it commands. Just as God once spoke light into existence, Jesus now speaks faith to follow him into the hearts of fishermen. “Follow me.” Those two words continue to be heard in unlikely places by unlikely recipients. Jesus’ call continues to be passed down through the Word of God to reach the ears and the hearts of the most unworthy people imaginable—you and me. Jesus does not wait until we have sorted out our lives, cleared our nets, or resolved every spiritual question. He calls us as we are. He steps into the middle of our ordinary routines and says, “Come, follow me.” His call is an act of grace. Jesus’ call continues to change countless hearts, minds, and lives still today. “I will make you fishers of men.” This is the noble purpose Jesus has given to us in our lives. Notice again who does the work. Christian living is Jesus shaping us, through his Word, into people who naturally reflect his mercy and speak his gospel. The disciples left their nets, but they gained a Savior. They left their boats, but they received a life-changing mission. They left their security, but they entered the kingdom of heaven opened to them by Jesus. We, too, follow Jesus daily as he continues to call us through his Word of truth and grace. We trust him to continue forming us into his people and sending us out on his loving, life-changing mission. Prayer: Jesus, thank you for calling me by your grace. Give me ears to hear your Word, a heart to trust you, and hands willing to serve. Shape my life according to your will. Amen. Daily Devotions is brought to you by WELS. The legal strategy in the Nick Reiner case is becoming clear. When defense attorney Alan Jackson withdrew on January 7th, he told reporters his former client is "not guilty of murder" under California law—language that strongly points to a not guilty by reason of insanity defense. Nick Reiner, 32, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his parents, legendary director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, at their Brentwood home on December 14th. Nick has a documented history of schizoaffective disorder, was in and out of rehab eighteen times starting at age fifteen, and was placed under a mental health conservatorship in 2020. Sources say he had recently switched psychiatric medications and was becoming more erratic. Hours before the murders, Nick attended a Christmas party at Conan O'Brien's home, where witnesses described bizarre behavior—repetitive questions to guests, inappropriate attire, and an argument with his father.Nick is now represented by public defender Kimberly Greene, who requested additional time to review the case. His arraignment has been delayed until February 23rd. If convicted, he faces life without parole or the death penalty. The DA's office hasn't decided whether to seek death and says it will consider the family's wishes.#RobReiner #MicheleSingerReiner #NickReiner #ReinerMurders #InsanityDefense #Schizoaffective #BrentwoodMurder #HollywoodTragedy #TrueCrimeToday #MentalHealthCrisisJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? *Republishing our most downloaded episodes, one a month this year*Whether you've been married for a few years or are approaching a milestone anniversary, a healthy marriage takes intentional work. Marriage isn't built in the big, dramatic moments, but in thousands of small habits and daily interactions that over time lead to either a God-honoring, joy-filled relationship—or one marked by strain and self-focus.Author and speaker Paul David Tripp joins me to talk about how those everyday habits shape our marriages and how to identify the ones that need to be uprooted. Drawing from nearly 50 years of marriage, Paul helps us see our relationships through the lens of the gospel.“A biblical view of marriage is a sinner married to a sinner in a fallen world—but with a faithful God. That means we can't coast. There are things in each of us that threaten our marriage, and we need God's grace every day.”My hope is that this conversation encourages you to re-engage your marriage with renewed faith and confidence in what God can do.What we talk about: How marriages are shaped by thousands of small moments Why daily habits matter more than big moments Identifying healthy and harmful marriage habits How sin turns us inward—and why marriage is a covenant of community Confession, forgiveness, and navigating conflict Unity vs. uniformity in marriage The role of the fruit of the Spirit in a thriving marriage Why isolation harms marriage and community helps heal it Connect with Paul David Tripp: Instagram: Paul David Tripp (@paultrippquotes) Facebook: Paul David Tripp Website: PaulTripp.com | Pastor. What if every health issue is actually part of the same underlying problem? In this powerful episode of Mayim Bialik's Breakdown, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz — world-renowned gastroenterologist, gut health expert, and author of Plant Powered Plus — explains why your gut health is a story of your brain-gut connection. He shares why filling the ‘God-shaped hole' is a biological requirement to reduce inflammation and start to heal. Skin issues, bloating, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, fatigue, brain fog, and even bloating may all be hidden symptoms of inflammation, driven by modern life, chronic stress, poor sleep, trauma, disconnection, and most importantly, a lack of spiritual connection. Dr. B shares a startling personal story of his own spiritual awakening that he had previously been too self-conscious to share. Dr. Bulsiewicz also breaks down: - Why modern convenience keeps us stuck in fight-or-flight instead of rest & digest - Practical, science-backed ways to reduce inflammation - Why health protocols help, but are never one-size-fits-all - Why the colon is your first line of defense against inflammation - Top 3 ways we're destroying our gut microbiome - How GLP-1 drugs (Ozempic, Wegovy) are changing gut health, and their potential long-term risks - Importance of fiber, protein quality, diet variety, and why the Western diet fuels inflammation We also explore the powerful link between science, faith, and healing — why spirituality, purpose, and human connection measurably improve physical health, and how loneliness, trauma, and individualism damage the gut and immune system. Backed by science, we unpack how trauma causes digestive disease and why forgiveness can literally heal the body. Dr. Bulsiewicz shares his personal journey into spirituality, his emotional reconciliation with his father, and the remarkable experiences that followed his passing. If you've been struggling with unexplained symptoms, chronic inflammation, gut issues, fatigue, or are searching for a more whole-person approach to health, this episode may completely change how you think about healing.
