Hey friends! Fair warning: today's episode is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster — we've got a big security win, some honest lab feedback, and a very personal share about my dad's funeral. Buckle up. CARTP certified, baby! — I'm officially a Certified Azure Red Team Professional (CARTP), courtesy of the folks at Altered Security. It's been a long time coming (I originally signed up for the live version and fell off after missing a couple Saturdays), but I came back for the self-paced 30-day version and finally finished the job. The lab experience — the good: — ~25 objectives, a solid lab guide, and a really fun variety of attack paths. Highlights include stealing tokens, enumerating Azure tenants, attacking apps and VMs and key vaults, simulated phishing against real tenant email addresses, popping reverse shells, and some clever OneDrive-based follow-on attacks via session hijacking. There's even some web app pen testing (hello, server-side template injection!) sprinkled in. The lab experience — the not-so-good: — The included videos are… not my favorite format. Think notepad-on-screen copy-paste tutorials with zero context. To fill in the gaps, I leaned heavily on Claude — pasting blobs of the lab guide and asking things like "why did stealing this token give me X but not Y?" — and it did a great job standing in where a live instructor would normally add color and context. Exam tips (spoiler-free, I promise): — A few things that helped me: I had Claude build me a CliffsNotes study guide from all our study-session chats — token context, command flags, the works. Before hitting start on the 24-hour clock, I fed Claude a list of all the tools I'd been using in the lab and had it build a one-shot PowerShell script to pull them all down from GitHub onto a fresh Windows VM. If your exam lab environment fails to spin up (as mine did in the US region), just try a different region — UK worked great for me. Enumerate. Enumerate. Enumerate. Know your tools, know which ones cover which areas of an Azure tenancy, and know how to get more verbose/tabular output when you need it. Take screenshots and notes as you go — the lab closes after 24 hours and you've got 48 hours to submit your report, so if you forgot to grab a screenshot of a flag… you are SOL, my friend. The exam itself: — I started around 5:30 p.m., wrapped up around 11 p.m., and had the final flag captured, a full Word report drafted, and was in bed at a reasonable hour. Submitted the report the next morning after the gym and a mint hot cocoa, and had my pass confirmation back well within their 7-business-day window. Private pen test training is happening: — I'm currently running a private 3-day session of our Active Directory pen testing class (version 2.0 — it got a big facelift!). It's built on the Game of Active Directory platform and we fully pwn three separate domains over the course of three days. Dad's funeral: — I shared some words at my dad's service this past Saturday and wanted to capture them here while they're fresh, since this podcast is basically my journal at this point. The service was perfect — very "him." He'd actually written funeral instructions (yes, they literally sat in a safety deposit box for years) specifying things like: max 10-minute message from the pastor, specific Bible verses, specific songs, and — my favorite — if the service runs over 45 minutes, someone needs to pull the fire alarm. He came up with that final instruction at his brother's funeral, which ran nearly two hours. He leaned over, squeezed my knee and said, "If my service goes over 45 minutes, pull the fire alarm." The song: — I played and sang at the service. The song was "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" — not a personal favorite of my dad's exactly, but he called it "the one about Jesus flying airplanes" after seeing me perform it years ago at the Minnesota State Fair chapel. I practiced it in the car on the way to Caribou every morning until I could get through it without crying. My guitar teacher's advice: close your eyes, focus on your fingers, and pretend you're just playing a tune in a room. It worked. Mostly. Thank you: — Seriously, so many of you have sent kind messages and I just want you to know it means the world. He taught me a lot about being a good dad, a good husband, and how to live with passion, a good attitude about your work, and a heart for serving others.

He went to a wedding without me. He lied about my dad being sick when people asked about me. He was also regularly asking a woman from work if he could come meet up with her before shifts and after shifts. He had said "I love you" to another woman he sent thousands to for photos. I was devastated. And I spiraled. I hit rock bottom. So I spent a week drilling in. Leaning into the horrors and demons. I got some closure but all the answers in the world will never be enough. You can't explain a chaotic choice like cheating or betrayal. But it has reminded me that I'm responsible for protecting my spark. He took it and snuffed it out, but I am fully capable of relighting it. I will keep it safe myself, and never trust anyone to be responsible for it again. My goal is to not hate him. And as far as I can tell, it's his goal too. I still waffle between anger/hatred/contempt/ick to despair/fear/unworthiness/shame/sadness and complete confusion/betrayal/alarm at the unpredictability of humans. But for now, I'm honoring the part of me that wants to save myself. I'm relighting my spark. I'm nurturing myself with compassion and grace and patience I couldn't find in someone else. And that has to be enough for now. I shouldn't have needed to hit rock bottom to remember to take care of myself, and I'll never let myself get to that point again. Up first is Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter. We open by talking about the appeal of Jason Vorhees as being based on the fear of the other in that until the sixth movie he is essentially a mentally challenged hermit living in the woods. We touch upon the upcoming series. Justin talk abouts the checkered history of Paramount's support of the franchise in that they were “becoming embarrassed” with their association with the series and intended to kill off Jason and have this be the end of the series but the financial response of the films inspired them to continue churning out sequels, and Justin ascertains that these movies are the epitome of the worst part of capitalism. We talk about the various problems with the horror community in general and toxic fandom as a whole. Justin talks about how not minding the first three F13 movies he doesn't really find the character of Jason Vorhees compelling at all.  Justin talks about what he likes about the film: the filmmaker decided to make a child the protagonist in a film that was very clearly not at all made for kids, and not just a protagonist but a smart protagonist. Liam talks about his experience with these films in that part six was the first of the series he saw and how he weirdly misremembers them, including a moment in which a character is murdered in an over the top almost silly manner (the infamous “he's killing me!” scene) as well as the many, many extended chase scenes, and how the mystique of the character is ruined by shots of him running, and Justin adds that either a brisk walk or straight up just showing up is the only acceptable way slasher villains should move. We talk about Tommy Jarvis' method of fucking with Jason, and how it's at least innovative for a horror movie. Up next is Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. We start by talking about how this is the first film where Jason is overtly supernatural, and that Tommy did actually kill him but now he's resurrected and actually undead. Justin talks about how it's weirdly believable that Tommy would need to see the body before believing Jason was actually dead. He also talks about how unlike part 4 he finds this scene entirely irredeemable. Liam talks about how the movie doesn't hold up to his memory of it. Liam talks about how ridiculous it is that everyone has willingly forgets about Jason. He also talks about how there's a weird sense of humor in the film that isn't present in the prior films, especially in the infamous paintball scene, and how he didn't really remember that as a kid, although he says the “quippiness” was a bit much. We discuss how the ending of chaining Jason to the bottom of the lake sounds cool but there's no real logic to it. The Norse settlement of Greenland, founded by Eric the Red in approximately 985 AD, provides a poignant and sad look at the final chapters of the Viking Age. Excavations at the Herjolfsness graveyard at the southern tip of Greenlandhave yielded extraordinary organic material preserved by the permafrost, including the clothing of the last inhabitants. These garments, such as a patched and coarse woolen dress, reveal that by the 15th century, the Greenlanders were no longer high-status people and had become increasingly isolated from the broader Norse diaspora. The settlement struggled as the climate cooled, while the Inuit people, who were better adapted to the Arctic conditions, thrived and moved further south. Artifacts like small wooden figures found in the region suggest interactions between the Norse Greenlanders and the Inuit populations. The final historical records of the colony are remarkably personal, documenting a witch burning in 1407 and a wedding in 1408. In the case of the witch burning, a man named Kolgrim was executed for allegedly using witchcraft to seduce a married woman. These events represent the last known activities of the Norse in Greenland before they vanished entirely, leaving behind only ruins and memories in the ice. 8/81630
