Joe Russo Calls Doomsday a “New Beginning”, Colin Farrell Up for Another DC Starring Role, and 2025's Worst Weekend at the Box Office

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesLast week, during an interview with Brazilian pop culture and media YouTube outlet, Omelete, to promote their new film, The Electric State, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars directors, Joe and Anthony Russo offered insights on how the upcoming pair Avengers of films differ from their previous multi-phase, saga-concluders: Infinity War and Endgame; describing the duology as a “new beginning.” Joe Russo went on to reiterate the real motivation for the creative duo returning to the franchise after leaving on an all-time high more than 5 years ago. In a double dose of DC casting news, sitcom vet Jason Ritter has joined the cast of Lanterns in a recurring role as Billy Macon, a ‘good-looking charmer who does his father's bidding, clings to his small-town ego and has everything to lose.' Elsewhere, The Penguin actor, Colin Farrell has entered negotiations to replace Daniel Craig as the titular sergeant of Luca Guadagnino's Word War II film, Sgt. Rock.Despite the release of several new genre films, last weekend's domestic box office was notably slow – at an approximate $54 million total, sluggish enough to earn the title of 2025's worst box office thus far.  Paramount's R-rated action comedy, Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid, took the top spot with $8.7 million, slightly below expectations. Meanwhile, Mickey 17 suffered a 60% drop in its second weekend, barely managing to stave off Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller, Black Bag, with hauls of $7.51 and $7.5 million, respectively. After more than a year of speculation, Apple TV+ has officially ordered a fourth season of its Emmy-winning comedy Ted Lasso. The pickup comes after co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis closed a deal to reprise his role as the titular character. Disney has released the first official trailer for body swap comedy reunion sequel Freakier Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The film hits theaters on August 8th, 22 years after the original. Conan O'Brien, who hosted the 97th Oscars telecast on March 2, has agreed to return and host the 98th Oscars telecast on March 15, 2026, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday. CBS has also announced that comedian Nikki Glaser will return in 2026 to host the 83rd annual Golden Globes.More than a year after Warner Bros. shelved Coyote vs. Acme for tax incentives, independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment is reportedly nearing a deal to acquire the film for around $50 million. Ketchup recently handled the theatrical release of The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which has earned $3.9 million since its March 14 debut.Columbia Pictures is plotting a new Starship Troopers movie, tasking District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story by Robert A. Heinlein. The Hollywood Reporter has learned “zero progress” has been made on Saw XI since writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft back in spring of 2024. Speaking on the project, Melton said “The reason it's held up is just, there's inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page.” A24 has released the first trailer for romantic feature film Materialists starring Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and Dakota Johnson. The film hits theaters on June 13th. Netflix has released the first trailer for Adam Sandler-led sequel Happy Gilmore 2. The film begins streaming on July 25th. Darren Aronofsky is in talks to direct Netflix's Cujo, a remake of Stephen King's classic horror novel about a vicious St. Bernard. The project is still in early development, and sources say Aronofsky has yet to hold creative discussions with Netflix. If the deal goes through, this would be his first feature film for a streaming platform.

PUBLIC VERSION. Writer and Director Marcus Dunstan (FEAST, FEAST 2, SAW IV, SAW V, SAW VI, SAW 3D, THE COLLECTOR, THE COLLECTION, THE NEIGHBOR, SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK) makes his triumphant return to THE MOVIE CRYPT to discuss the making of his latest film #AMFAD: ALL MY FRIENDS ARE DEAD (in theaters and available on VOD now). From rolling with the changes that Hollywood has undergone over the last decade and surviving through the pandemic and strikes… to how he got involved with #AMFAD… to how he pulled off the film on such extremely tight resources (the initial production schedule was just 12 days!)… to how he found a way to solve some of the craziest hurdles he faced… to the film's world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival… to BREAKING NEWS about the status of a new COLLECTOR film which Marcus received just minutes before this recording… to a discussion about which films each of the guys would remake if given the chance (and who they would cast)… to why leaning on fellow filmmakers for support and encouragement is such a pivotal part of staying sane in the business… to everyone's favorite X-FILES episode and SO much more… this extremely uplifting conversation is just what you need to hear this week and the perfect example why Marcus is one of our favorite people in the known universe.

There's a reason we love to see our favourite monsters return time and time agin but recently its been a period of transition. Shy of the original master slasher Michael Myers, who's reign of terror thankfully continues, many favourites have been benched or transitioned into the world of television like everyone's favourite good guy doll. So, the time was ripe to unleash some new ones. Our guest today has been a part of crafting the way forward for two iconic horror heavies. In one as the writer of several of the franchises most adored entries and the other, a work of his own creation. In doing so he has cemented his place as one of the contemporary masters of horror and in my estimation, one of its greatest filmmakers. The two franchises I'm referring to are “Saw” and “The Collector” and the filmmaker is the masterful Marcus Dunstan.I should note that the two “Collector” films are among my personal favourites. With taut, stylish, nail biting direction from Marcus and a pitch perfect performance by the films star, the indispensable Josh Stewart, “The Collector” films have become an audience favourite so I think I can safely say we're all rather excited for the upcoming third film (more on that later).Marcus has a new film titled “#AMFAD All my friends are dead” that is one of the most fun times you could have with this years crop of horror films. Equal parts terrifying, scathing and laugh out loud funny, it's decidedly lighter brand of Marcus Dunstan film and yet also fits into his roster perfectly. Original and with a hell of an ending, well, horror fans are in for a serious ride with this one.“#AMFAD” is in select theatres now and is available on streaming.Marcus and I discuss the happy accident the got him his first writing gig on a Saw film (he wrote 4 of them), his commitment in creating “#AMFAD” to not sticking to the usual tropes of a film about social media obsessed characters, how “The Collector” films could be so grizzly but still have heart and oh yes, some details on the 3rd film.Alright, let's join the terrifying and twisted world of Jigsaw and the Collector with writer/director Marcus Dunston! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

This week we were so psyched to chat with filmmaker Marcus Dunstan. He's the co-writer of movies like Feast and Saw IV, V, VI and 3D as well as the filmmaker behind The Collector franchise. His latest film is #AMFAD: All my Friends Are Dead. We chat about his talented young cast, the potential for a sequel, and Terry manages to ask what the latest is on the third The Collector movie, The Collected. Then we dig into Marcus' childhood relationship to horror before finding out why Dawn of the Dead is his Scarred for Life pick. The audio quality might not be the best this week because one of us was recording in a hotel in Montreal and the other still had COVID. For context, Marcus shows a video of him and his childhood friends making a movie and tossing a mannequin off the roof. He holds up a number of Dawn of the Dead memorabilia (figurines etc.) and the novel he holds up towards the end (that Terry says he's halfway through) is The Living Dead by George Romero and former guest Daniel Kraus. Director Kevin Greutert discusses his new film, Saw X, with fellow Director Marcus Dunstan in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses refocusing the series around its trademark antagonist, finding inspiration in a new setting when the initial location fell through, and having his cinematography capture uncharacteristic beauty in contrast to the iconic Saw imagery. The film tells the story of John - the serial killer known as Jigsaw - who goes out of country to undergo an experimental procedure in hopes of finding the miracle cure for his cancer. Once he discovers the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable, he is armed with newfound purpose and uses deranged and ingenious traps to turn the tables on the con artists. In this episode of the saw retrospective we take a look at the seventh film in the Saw series "Saw 3D" Saw 3D (also known as Saw: The Final Chapter) is a 2010 American 3D horror film by Kevin Greutert and written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. It is the seventh installment in the Saw film series. The film stars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Sean Patrick Flanery, and Cary Elwes. The film focuses on a man who falsely claims to be a Jigsaw survivor, becoming a local celebrity. However, he soon finds himself part of a real Jigsaw game where he must ultimately save his wife. Meanwhile, Jill Tuck reveals to an internal affairs officer that rogue Detective Mark Hoffman is the man responsible for the recent Jigsaw games, and Hoffman hunts her down. An eighth installment was planned, but the decrease in the box office performance for Saw VI compared to previous installments led to Saw 3D being the final planned film in the series, and the plot concept for Saw VIII being incorporated into Saw 3D. Saw V director David Hackl was to direct the film, but two weeks before filming Lionsgate announced that Greutert, who directed the sixth film, would direct. Principal photography took place in Toronto, Ontario from February to April 2010 and was shot with the SI-3D digital camera system, as opposed to shooting with traditional cameras and later transferring to 3D in post-production. Saw 3D was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on October 22, 2010, by Lionsgate, but was pushed back a week from its original release date of October 22, 2010, to October 29, 2010; it was released a day earlier in the United Kingdom and Australia. Saw 3D opened at number one making over $22.5 million. It was eventually followed by an eighth film, Jigsaw, in 2017.

It is the fourth installment in the Saw film series, the third directed by Bousman. The film stars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson, Betsy Russell, Lyriq Bent, Justin Louis, and Donnie Wahlberg. The film continues the story of the Jigsaw Killer's obsession with teaching people the value of their lives and occurs roughly at the same time as the previous installment. Despite Jigsaw's death, the film focuses on his ability to manipulate people into continuing his work. The story follows Officer Daniel Rigg being put through a series of tests in order to try to let go of his obsession with saving everyone, while at the same time attempting to save his partner. The film was released in the United States on October 26, 2007, by Lionsgate. It received generally negative reviews from critics. Despite this, the film was a box office success, grossing $139 million worldwide. A sequel, titled Saw V, was released in 2008.

Director: Andre OvredalWriters: Dan Hageman, Kevin Hageman, Guillermo del Toro (all did screenplay); stories by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick MeltonStars: Zoe Margaret Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin ZajurRated: PG-13, Runtime: 1hr 48minReleased August 9, 2019; Available in theatersSynopsis: It's Halloween 1968 in the small town of Mill Valley, & young high schooler Stella & her two buddies, Auggie & Chuck, still love the holiday & all things spooky. When their act of revenge on the local bully goes a little too well they're forced into hiding in the car of a mysterious young man named Ramon, who is running from his own demons. Together the teens explore a local haunted house, where they find a book of scary stories written by the long-dead recluse daughter of a powerful local family. Stella takes the book home, seemingly upsetting the spirit of the author, who begins magically writing new stories from beyond the grave featuring Stella's friends & classmates as the characters. And when the characters in the stories meet a grisly end, so do their real life counterparts.** You may notice that Jamie is mysteriously absent from our roundtable & that her take on the movie comes without preamble. We experienced some technical difficulties on this episode, but have tried to make it as seamless as possible. Sorry, y'all. **Next up, we'll be reviewing the first full-length feature from our old pals, Radio Silence (V/H/S, Southbound). So check out the trailer and join us in a couple of weeks when we review Ready or Not!
