The planet is warming. Tempers are flaring. There is so much going on in the world that it can be hard to get past the headlines, hyperbole, and sound bytes. It can be even harder to get into the nuances, complex facts, and extraordinarily-important-yet-overlooked crunchy nougat centers of disaster, climate, social issues, and everything in between. But don’t worry! Two intrepid heroes with wildly dysfunctional origin stories are here to accompany you through the quagmire that is our world. We created Globally Heated because we want to untangle the knots that make understanding our changing world so challenging. We want to delve into the little details that so often get overlooked, and we want to share our discoveries with you! Join us on this intriguing, zany, hopefully informative journey as we all try to learn and understand a little more about our most definitely heated—but still wonderful—little blue (and kind of green?) globe.

Stress, mindfulness, eco-anxiety, oh my! With global temperatures rising along with sea levels while our thresholds for nonsense continue to lower, it is understandable that humanity might be a little freaking stressed out right about now. But what part does stress play in our responses to disaster and climate change? And how does the kind of hippy-dippy sounding concept of mindfulness enter into the picture? With things like melting ice caps, rising sea levels, increasing frequency and strength of natural disasters, crazy plagues, faster-melting margaritas, a blight of balminess, and above all, unseasonably warm weather, why are there so many people out there that don’t believe climate change is real?!Well, as easy as it would be to say that corporate greed and anti-science hacks are just out for themselves, that isn’t quite the whole story. This week we’re discussing why climate change is such a difficult topic for humans as a whole to get our minds around and take action on, specifically from a psychological perspective! These days, it’s easy to get upset at all the issues with the coronavirus response, and for good reason. But when we start lashing out and casting blame in broad strokes, we oversimplify things—and this can actually do more harm than good. So, when we play the Blame Game, are we playing smart Stratego, or are we just painting with a broad brush and playing simple Parcheesi. Wow, that’s a lot of mixed metaphors. Today, we’ll get into how to look critically, and with nuance, at disaster response in this episode of Globally Heated!Be sure to also check out our Cool-It Toolkit page for more on how to implement solutions to all the issues we discuss. Redlining. What a strange term evoking an antiquated way of thinking, or, on the other hand, evoking nothing, because you have no idea what it is. But what the heck does redlining have to do with disaster and climate anyway? Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly, as it may be for some), redlining and disinvestment have had serious consequences for the severity and frequency of disasters, as well as the disproportionate impacts of climate change, experienced by communities of color across the United States. The what and the why are what we’re getting into this week, on Globally Heated!Content warning: Given recent police killings and ongoing violence perpetrated by law enforcement around the country, we want to let you know ahead of time that this episode includes a discussion of racism, systematic discrimination, and institutionalized inequity. If you're not in a space to listen to that right now, that's completely understandable. We hope everyone is doing what they need to do to stay as safe and healthy as possible right now. The past week or so has been heavy. The killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, along with all those who have lost their lives to police violence, have made us recognize a need to spotlight voices other than our own. If you follow our blog (GloballyHeated.com) and our social media (@globallyheated on Twitter and Instagram) for the next week or so, we will be posting podcast episodes and information that have been helpful in our own efforts to educate ourselves, and spotlighting the voices that really need to be heard right now. We stand with you in demanding justice and change. There is no simple solution, so let’s embrace the complexity as a chance to discover, to challenge ourselves to develop deeper solutions, to listen to and create space for everyone, and to move forward together. Disasters make everyone equal, right? Climate change affects everyone the same way? There are no advantages or disadvantages or, well, you know, it’s all disadvantages… disadvantages for everyone! Yeah... no. It’s the exact opposite. In this episode, we’re diving into how disaster and climate change have an even greater impact on communities that are already struggling because of current and historical practices of their governments and societies - and how we can all engage with our communities to help mitigate, or get help mitigating, these heightened impacts. We’ll be walking through a few of the intersections of law, climate, inequity, and disasters to see how income inequity plays into the preparedness, response, and recovery space. You want to be able to think through what things may have changed or may be different with the current disaster or emergency situation, without needing to think through every single thing you need to do - you’ve practiced, you already know what to do, if something has changed, all you have to do is slightly course-correct. Our globe is still warming up, those ice caps are still melting… You get the idea, we’re still talking about disasters, emergencies, and climate change here, folks! (As soon as they go away, we’ll stop, we promise.)We’re continuing the preparedness series today with an episode all about supplies! This week, we’re going to talk a little bit about stocking up and gathering supplies when it comes to getting prepared for a disaster or emergency. What do all the preparedness websites say you’ll need (the legitimate one, not doomsday-preppers-unhinged.com)? What do you think you’ll need? And how do you figure it all out without breaking the bank?Note that this is not going to be a go-bag, prepper bunker podcast. We will talk a little about emergency kits and a tiny bit about what you should bring with you if you have to evacuate or leave during or after an emergency, but it won’t be a long list of every item you might need. Next week we will discuss building a kit and stocking up on supplies, and in the third episode of the series, we will walk through how to practice your emergency plans and why practice is so important. And note: These are not “go bag” episodes (although we will hit on that topic to a degree). This is more about mindset, info, and process. We’ll figure out how we all fit into the disaster preparedness, response, and recovery chain first. The Corona Virus has swept our globe, changed our way of life, and forced us to look at what we’re willing to sacrifice for our own safety, and for each other. But is going the distance on social distancing worth it? How bad could it really get if we throw caution to the wind and just get back out there? In this episode of Globally Heated, we will be guiding you through some visualization of all these numbers we keep hearing about and take a closer look at the statistics associated with COVID-19. On this podcast, we’re going to be discussing the numbers associated with COVID-19, including mortality rates, as well as a detailed overview of the processes of intubation and putting a patient on a ventilator. This may not be a discussion everyone is comfortable with or ready to listen to right now, especially if this virus has directly affected them or a loved one. You have our sympathies and understanding, and if this week’s episode isn’t for you, that’s totally okay and valid. Our goal today is to help listeners get a bit of a personal perspective on what the COVID-19 numbers mean, for them, for those around them, and for the world. Alex describes intubation and mechanical ventilation in detail from 18:33 to 22:00, feel free to skip on over that part if it's not for you!Check out OurWorldInData.org to learn more about the numbers and percentages we talk about in the episode and watch this video to see what goes into the process of intubation.
