The shower was a hit partly because the bride lives in Texas and had the good sense to put "just ship it" on the invitation, meaning zero gift-unwrapping theater, zero bow hats, zero frantic "she's in the bathroom, don't open it yet" energy. The scratch-off card game was a crowd-pleaser — you send in a photo of the groom, they print him into a celebrity card deck, guests scratch to find him, winner gets a gift bag. Clean, fun, no one had to pretend to cry over a KitchenAid.On the way to the pool party, Queenie stopped at a neighborhood lemonade stand (Disney World fund, very ambitious), handed over a ten, got some chitchat — and then, as she's leaving in her bathing suit, a little girl looks up and says, *I like your dress.* Queenie nearly corrected her and then wisely decided: no need. Just drive away in your very mini dress.The conversation pivots to long marriages when TT brings up a moment at pickleball — a sweet young woman, married two years, asked TT and her husband what their secret was after learning they'd been together 43 years (Queenie initially insisted it was 45 or 46; the math got worked out eventually). The husband's answer: "You have to learn when not to say things." Queenie's suggested alternatives: laziness, procrastination, inertia, conflict aversion, exhaustion, and not wanting to go broke. TT reveals the piece of advice she *wanted* to write on a bridal shower card once but didn't have the nerve to sign her name to. It is, shall we say, anatomically specific and probably the most useful thing anyone has ever almost written on one of those cards.This leads to a small detour about the lost art of handwriting — Queenie had to get a second advice card at the shower because her first attempt looked like it was written by, in her words, "a deranged old woman." Neither of them writes anymore. Cursive, once a graded subject, now just runs off the page on its own while the brain races ahead.The segment **Wait, What? No Way, José** lands on smell training and brain aging, sourced from a Harvard neurobiologist (legitimacy confirmed: it's not just hoo-ha). Turns out your nose is directly wired into cognitive, emotional, and memory centers of the brain, smell loss is linked to 139 health conditions, and simply sniffing five strong scents for 20 seconds twice a day — lavender, lemon, coffee, clove, eucalyptus — with active focus can improve verbal fluency and even increase hippocampus volume. Nobody huffs gasoline, despite TT's complicated feelings about it.Hot on the heels of nose science comes a cannabis news drop: a large new study published in BMJ Mental Health found no link between cannabis use and cognitive decline or dementia risk in older adults. Unlike the patchwork of conflicting prior studies, this one has statistical weight — large observational sample plus genetic causation testing. The researchers themselves say it's reassuring, not a green light for heavy use. Queenie's editorial: "Put that in your pipe and smoke it, everybody." TT suspects the dementia scare was always a "dog whistle" designed to keep older adults — now the biggest cannabis-purchasing demographic — away from the dispensary.**TT's Choice** pulls number 50: *What if you woke up fluent in one new language? Which one, and what's the first thing you say?* TT chooses American Sign Language. Queenie blinks. Slowly. Several times. She comes around — ASL is cool, meaningful, a genuine bridge — but not before pointing out that you can't exactly holler across a room in it and that the deaf community is, statistically speaking, a smaller conversation pool than Mandarin speakers. TT's first thing she'd sign: *Hey, I can communicate with you.* Queenie's pick is Hindi or Mandarin, motivated by sheer population density and years of working with people from India and China. Her first phrase would be "How may I best support you?" They both know exactly one useful sign — the universal one — and demonstrate it enthusiastically. World peace is declared, then immediately rescinded.**The Fuck It List** this week belongs to Queenie, who has been drowning in communication chaos. Working with relocation assignees, she's been available in every possible channel simultaneously — WhatsApp, texting, email, calls — with no structure, no response windows, 14 draft messages floating in the ether. She's saying fuck it to the myth of 24/7 availability and replacing it with something she finds less loaded than "setting boundaries": setting expectations. Spelling out clearly what method to use when, what response time is realistic, what constitutes an emergency. TT's contribution: "Clarity is kindness." They both acknowledge the particular guilt that comes with this for women of their generation — trained to give, to accommodate, to say yes and mean it and then quietly resent it. Queenie also notes the extra complication: some of her assignees are new to a city with no social network, making her feel like the only lifeline. Still. Expectations. In writing. Part of the intake process. Done.The back half is pure domestic dispatch: TT is doing smoothies for lunch, lost some weight, allowed herself ice cream on the Wisconsin River (a ferry went past; they did not take it), and permits herself two pieces of hard candy a day. Queenie is preparing for a colonoscopy on Wednesday — which she is reframing as "Cleansday" and, after the year she had, genuinely does not fear. She was apparently scolded last time for insufficient prep results, a situation she finds baffling since she followed instructions and couldn't exactly verify from her end. More Miralax this time. Meanwhile, Queenie's daughter Megan had her first mammogram and got called back — technical imaging issue, folding, unclear view, very common for a first scan, not worrying anyone. The holiday recap is suitably low-key — TT's dog was scared, the neighbors were mostly unbothered, and Queenie caught some fireworks through the car window while she was out on the road. But the big headline out of D.C. was apparently the air quality warning advising people to wear face masks at what was billed as the largest fireworks display in the history of humanity. Eight hundred and seventy-five thousand rockets, extreme humidity, and a lingering sulfur cloud over the nation's capital. Queenie could still smell the Clifton Park show on her dogs at ten o'clock. She does not recommend.From there, the conversation shifts into the kind of honest civic processing that's become a CDQ signature. TT mentions that a speech by "Mom Dami" the day before the Fourth actually gave her some genuine hope — eloquent, non-partisan, focused on ideals over grievance. Queenie ran across a New York Times op-ed featuring a panel of historians who largely agreed: this is a blip, not the end. America has been here before, it will come out of this, and maybe some things that needed to be reset will get reset. Neither of them are fully buying it, but they're choosing to hold onto it. The World Cup gets a nod as an unexpected patriotism booster — watching the sheer diversity of the American team and the fans who traveled to see them is, it turns out, a decent antidote to doom-scrolling.Then TT reports from the pickleball front, and it does not disappoint. After getting rained out earlier in the week due to a heat wave that made going outside feel like climbing into an oven, TT and her husband ("honey") braved a full-blown thunderstorm to make it to their beginner class. Worth it: their teacher declared the whole group significantly more advanced than her other beginners. TT was not individually singled out for exceptional ball-handling skills, she is very clear about this. What she was singled out for — though only in her own conscience — was accidentally ricocheting a serve off the head of the guy next to her. She checked him for welts multiple times throughout the remainder of class. No dimplage. The car also survived the hail threat unscathed. All things considered, a win.Cannabis check-in: TT is on a Lazerín sativa pink lemonade gummy ahead of an art afternoon with her son and his friends — she secured glue from Walmart at zero-dark-thirty that morning and baked muffins. She is thriving. Queenie is working a teeny tiny .35 pre-roll from Hepworth — Durban Poison and Tarte Cherry, a hybrid — which she gamely attempts to show the camera while forgetting she's mirrored. The paper reads "WAR." It says RAW. Big news on the infused beverage front: Weed Water has leveled up to twelve-ounce cans at ten milligrams with new flavors. Queenie and her daughter Megan road-tested some at a soccer viewing and report it is not overly sweet, has a pleasant sparkle, and is extremely beach-appropriate. There is also some conversation about hundred-milligram gummies being sold in California, which both women regard with the respectful distance one reserves for a very loud stranger at a party. TT topped out at twenty milligrams and was, by her own description, a limp noodle. Queenie thinks she'd sooner try a mushroom that makes you see Lilliputians.The "Wait, What?" segment this week tackles why time feels like it's been fast-forwarded since roughly your mid-thirties. Queenie explains: when you're young, everything is new, your brain is working hard to process unfamiliar inputs, and that effort expands your subjective sense of time. As you age, your brain goes on autopilot — it's processed most of this before, so it files it away without ceremony and time collapses. When you're five, one year is twenty percent of your entire life. At sixty, it's a rounding error. The fix? Get off autopilot. Take a different route. Learn something new. Challenge your brain enough that it decides the memory is worth keeping. TT immediately connects this to pickleball — having to actually think about rules and positioning is genuinely hard in a way that things haven't been in a while, and she suspects she may have been running on autopilot since her three-and-a-half years as her mom's full-time caregiver. Queenie suggests cannabis as a supplementary time-stretcher, which TT endorses warmly and from recent personal experience.TT's Choice serves up a classic dispensary dilemma: genius bud tender, terrible product — or stunning inventory, bud tender who will not stop talking? Both land on product, with the caveat that if you're a first-timer, the knowledgeable bud tender wins going away. Walking into a wall of products with no guidance and an unhelpful talker is a recipe for paralysis and probably buying the wrong thing.The Fuck It List closes things out with TT reclaiming the American flag. She wore bunting around her waist to a protest that got rained out, and she is flying her flag at home — not as a political statement but as a counter-statement: this flag belongs to everyone, and she is not ceding it to anyone. Queenie seconds this hard. The pickup-truck-with-a-flag-in-the-bed image has done real damage to a symbol they grew up loving, and both of them are done letting that stand. We went back to 2019 this week continuing our Summer Camp series for 2026 here on SlashU. This week we covered "Camp Wedding." It's the story of Mia and her bridal party. They rented out an old abandoned summer camp to turn it into Mia's wedding venue. But little do they know the camp carries a history. A young girl was struck by lightning and drowned in the 80s. Also there were some Salem-style witch burnings there in the long forgotten past. Also it was the site of a terrible Native American massacre. So there's a lot going on and it makes you wonder if having a wedding there is such a good idea. Also, everyone in the movie is addicted to texting and posting on social media. Drop us a line or two . . .We open mid-chaos — Queenie's looking out the window at incoming weather and clocking the Belmont Stakes clock ticking down, while TT is recovering from twenty-one (count 'em, twenty-one) unsolicited phone calls from a porch enclosure company after the crime of simply browsing their website. One innocent look at three-season room options, and suddenly her phone is a hostage situation. Queenie sympathizes — she knows the company, they did her mother's enclosure — and confirms: yes, those people are hungry. TT vows never to do that again. From there it's a brief dispatch on Queenie's brother Brian, who's been hospitalized with a nosebleed that became genuinely life-threatening because he's on blood thinners. The dilemma, as Queenie frames it with zero sugarcoating: do you want to die of a heart attack or bleed out? Pick one. His wife's emergency field fix involved a tampon, which bought some time before getting saturated. He's going home with explicit instructions to never blow his nose again. He also looks like Shrek. He has not slept. Everybody is just fine. This slides naturally into the broader theme of everybody around them crumbling simultaneously — friends at doctors multiple times a week for different things, the body not cooperating the way it did at forty, children turning forty themselves (which: how), and the general indignity of midlife maintenance. TT notes to Honey earlier that day that "we all have something going on" and you just have to accept it. Queenie does not love this but cannot argue with it. There's a brief musical interlude celebrating cardiac stents and replacement shoulders, which honestly feels earned. The conversation turns to self-work and therapy — TT wonders aloud whether there are people who just... move on from childhood without any excavation, and Queenie's verdict is swift: those people are freaking crazy. You can usually tell when someone has done the work, she says, often by their vocabulary. This loops into narcissists, which both of them have in their lives, and the grim reality that there's no cure. Options are limited: go dark (no contact) or go grey (cordial, minimal, zero extra effort). The segue to the current political moment is smooth and immediate. Queenie describes the commander in chief as having "normalized" narcissism and brings up the AI-generated Trump-in-cheerleader-short-shorts image circulating online. It's Pride Month, she notes. He may finally be coming out. They laugh. TT reminds them they're laughing all the way to hell. Also: screwworms are back, ocean monitoring equipment is being removed, and there's no oversight of anything anymore. If you see things moving in your food, just ignore it. On the cannabis check-in: TT has had a full ten-milligram Floracal Farms Live Rosin Pink Lemonade sativa gummy (complete gummy, very deliberate), and Queenie has been smoking Banana Punch, a pre-ground indica with very small print on the packaging. Banana as a flavor descriptor is noted to be uncommon. This is deemed worth mentioning. The show's real comedic peak arrives courtesy of Conan O'Brien's podcast. Queenie went down a YouTube rabbit hole after Conan interviewed an intimacy coordinator, which led her to a segment featuring a young man whose company makes thirty-two custom condom sizes and offers a hotline where you can speak to said gentleman if you're unsure which size to order. He claims to be able to tell if callers are being truthful. TT has already seen this. The bit about guidance counselors not recommending "talking about dicks all day" as a career path lands. Queenie's advice: measure twice, not once. You only want to make that mistake one time. They are crying laughing. The news segment covers TSA's updated guidance technically allowing medical marijuana in carry-on and checked bags, with a TSA officer retaining final discretion. Queenie and TT are skeptical — it sounds great until you realize there's no guidance on how much, in what form, or what documentation actually counts as proof. Also: dogs in airports are primarily sniffing for explosives, not drugs, Queenie notes, so don't panic. Bottom line: it's loosey goosey, probably a step in the right direction, and you're still taking a risk. Bring your documentation. Keep original packaging. Maybe don't. TT's Choice (number sixty-six): Would you rather live your life as a reality show or a documentary? TT picks documentary, then has to be walked through what a documentary actually is when she's alive, then sticks with her answer on the grounds that reality shows feel predatory and she wouldn't want to be the subject of one. Queenie's contribution is to narrate TT's life in nature documentary voice — "here we have TT in her natural habitat... notice how she eats a gummy prior to coitus." This evolves into a discussion of rhino mating, specifically the part where the male must remain motionless inside the female for seven minutes without moving or the clock resets. Queenie has recently found this very erotic. She is going to tell Honey. TT's stomach hurts. Queenie names her reality show *Call T*. Done. The Fuck It List this week is a serious one: a friend of Queenie's, a woman their age with significant cardiac history, had her blood pressure medication changed and spent weeks feeling terrible, voicing concern at her hospital stay, being dismissed, and only getting the medication switched back when her primary care physician called the cardiologist directly. Within a day, she felt better. The fuck it goes to not giving up, to trusting your own body, and to having your problems minimized by a medical system that still, somewhere in its bones, operates like doctors are gods you stand up for when they enter the room. Queenie's message: advocate for yourself, and if you can't, find someone who can. The healthcare system is fragmented, it will trample you, and you are the only one who lives in your body. They close out with upcoming weeks — TT's visiting her son's art thing, Queenie has a quiet week plus a golf date before an absolutely packed following week including a tour for a potential new employer. Father's Day is next week. Wishes will be extended then. Bye bye. The outro is a song. TT wrote a lament about a zinnia eaten by a rabbit before it could grow. Queenie and TT kick things off with a digression about estate sales and thrift shops, specifically the unsettling realization that the stuff of their childhoods is now being tagged and priced at church basements across America. Harvest gold Tupperware. Avocado canisters. Country geese with blue bows around their necks. Roosters. Wallpaper you could strip with a steam iron and seventeen years of your life. They're not mourning exactly — more like doing that thing where you laugh because the alternative is sitting with the actual weight of time passing, and who has the energy for that.Queenie is riding a sativa-leaning hybrid from Ghost (a brand she's clearly developing brand loyalty to), and TT is working through a hummy gummy situation. Both are in decent spirits. TT has also been gifted, by her son and his partner, a book called *420 Things You Can Draw While High*, which has become a legitimate source of joy — she drew a Girl Scout brownie in a crystal sundae dish, which is genuinely perfect, and a spliff rocket, because she knows how to make a spliff and wanted to put that knowledge to use. Queenie suggests she share her drawings on the pod. We are on board with this.From there, the news portion arrives, and it's a bummer, as news tends to be. TT brings up a Louisiana bill signed by the governor that tacks on up to a year in jail and a thousand-dollar fine for anyone caught smoking, vaping, or consuming cannabis within two thousand feet of a school — which, given how schools are distributed across a populated state, essentially means a significant chunk of private homes qualify. Dorms too. Both women note the particular absurdity of layering additional criminal penalties onto something that's already illegal in Louisiana, seemingly in service of a "drug-free school zone" philosophy that has historically functioned less as child protection and more as an excuse to put people back in jail. Queenie points out that New York allows cannabis consumption anywhere cigarettes are permitted, and both agree that the Louisiana approach has a lot more to do with politics and performative toughness than any genuine public safety interest.This slides, as it reliably does on this pod, into broader political territory. E. Jean Carroll comes up — TT and Queenie both clearly appalled by what they're watching unfold with the retaliatory lawsuit behavior. Then: the Kennedy Center, the gilded bronze horses on the Arlington bridge (twenty-two-point-four carat gold, paid for by taxpayers, which Queenie cannot get over), the reflecting pool, the UFC fighting ring being erected on federal grounds, the music festival that now apparently features Kid Rock and a lot of empty slots. Queenie delivers what may be the episode's thesis: "There is no bottom for this guy. There is no bottom." They eventually, consciously, make themselves stop. There is a lot they could say. They choose not to spend all their energy there.Then comes TT's Choice, the either/or/what-if game. TT pulls number 33: *What if you could unmeet one person from your life? No hard feelings, they just never happened.* TT goes first and doesn't hesitate long — she wants to unmeet Lou, a man who entered her family's life as a business partner for her husband and proceeded to steal the company out from under him. She's still carrying rancor about it. She admits she was charmed by him at the initial meeting — charismatic, smooth talker — and believes she might have talked her husband out of the deal if she'd never met the man. Queenie nominates a former daughter-in-law, and the word she uses is "unredeeming," meaning the person brought nothing — nothing — into the lives of anyone around her. Whole family affected. She doesn't need much time to arrive at this answer either.What's interesting is where the conversation goes after the nominations: both women start circling the idea that holding onto this kind of bitterness is, functionally, still letting those people win. Queenie quotes her mother — "he who angers you controls you" — and means it. They land somewhere honest: it's hard to let go, but anger takes energy, and energy is finite and worth protecting. TT resolves to do a little ceremony. Burn something in effigy. Smudge it out. They've both mostly let it go, mostly. The "mostly" is doing a lot of work there, and they know it, and that's okay.The Fuck It List lands on high heels, and it's a full prosecution. TT wore chunky heels to an outdoor ceremony recently — had to dig them out from the top of the closet, climb a stool to reach them — and spent the day tottering around paying for it. Her new Skechers have elastic laces and she is evangelical about them. Queenie surrendered heels years ago on account of her feet and has not looked back. Together they trace the whole origin of the heel as a beauty construct: it's about making women's legs look longer, which is about appealing to the male gaze, which connects to makeup, to plastic surgery, to everything related to looking "good"!
