We end season 2 “What is an American?” with a re-examination of Vice Admiral Jerome Adam’s quote: “This is our Pearl Harbor …” We are at war, but the enemy isn’t so clearly defined. Are we experiencing American impotence? Are we living in a war zone? Events of the week in politics, protests and pandemic response seem to say -- yes! But as the seasons change will we as a country have the resilience to change also and survive the upcoming Winter a stronger and ‘more perfect union’? Time will tell. As of Aug 4th 2020, one hundred fifty seven thousand, seven hundred twenty-nine people have died from COVID-19 in the US. Yet, some still refuse to wear a mask. "Anti-maskers" have become a subculture as people cling to traditions of individualism or claim it’s their “Right” in a free country. Which begs the question: What is an American?
