Another ugly day on the US markets as the AI bubble focus heats up and key names are bleeding, from Nvidia and Palantir to Meta and Oracle. With VIX near pivotal levels, it feels like we need to find support here or risk a further and possibly accelerating consolidation in this bull market. That's important for other markets as well, as bond and FX markets have shrugged off the volatility in risk assets so far but can't remain immune to the contagion if risk sentiment deteriorates further. This and more discussed on today's pod, which features Saxo Global Head of Macro Strategy John J. Hardy. Links discussed on the podcast and our Chart of the Day can be found on the John J. Did you know Britain's courts are in crisis? After years of cuts by politicians, pandemic disruption and operational failures, The Standard's special report explores the spiralling backlog of court cases that define our broken justice system. Defendants and victims talk about the impact of being trapped, waiting years - sometimes until 2029 or 2030 - for their cases to even come to court. The Standard's Courts Correspondent Tristan Kirk reports on this shameful decline, and how jury trials could be axed as a possible solution. It comes as Justice Secretary David Lammy is under fire, as two criminals were mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth by mistake - with prison governors called in for crisis talks. He went on to admit that the government has a "mountain to climb" in tackling the prisons crisis, as it emerged that 40 more inmates may be wrongly freed before Christmas. Hosted on Acast. Join #1 New York Times-bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell discuss his latest book, Revenge of the Tipping Point; a fresh look at his breakthrough book, The Tipping Point. In 1996, Malcolm Gladwell published a piece in The New Yorker that became the seed of The Tipping Point. Twenty-five years after the book's publication, it remains a global phenomenon — blending social science, history, pop culture, and business to look at how a single event can spark a movement, a social phenomenon, or an epidemic. In Revenge of the Tipping Point, Gladwell draws on fresh case studies to rethink and expand on his original ideas about how trends are born, catch on, and spread. Why in the late 1980s and early '90s did Los Angeles become the bank robbery capital of the world? What is the Magic Third and what does it have to do with racial equity? How did COVID and the opioid crisis become so devastating? Hear Gladwell discuss these questions and more — The New Yorker's crucial early support of Gladwell's writing, the enormous impact of The Tipping Point, what Gladwell has learned since its publication, and what social epidemics can teach us about the future.

A seasoned teacher explores the uneasy mix of excitement and fear around AI: the urge to use smarter tools vs. the risk of losing something essential. Instead of answers, you'll get questions that linger:If a sequence is flawless, why can it still feel empty? How do you tell support from substitution? When does help from AI become dependent? You'll hear a thought experiment about a “perfect” robot-led class, a challenge to our habit of outsourcing judgment, and a reminder about what lands only when two people share a room: presence, accountability, being truly seen. Hear from Prof. Tim Lenton OBE, as we explore the potential of positive tipping points in accelerating the transition to a net-zero economy. What happens when the conversation about climate change shifts from avoiding disaster to unlocking positive change? Suddenly, it's not just about risk - it's about momentum. Because while some systems may be close to dangerous tipping points, others – like clean energy, electric transport, and sustainable food – are tipping in the right direction. That's why in this episode, we explore how to accelerate those positive shifts, including: · How smart policies can trigger widespread, self-reinforcing change across economies and societies; · Why leveraging social norms and human behavior is just as critical as investing in technology; · And what it takes to create the tipping points that move us toward a stable climate, not away from one. He has more than 25 years research experience, focused on modelling of the biosphere, climate, biogeochemical cycles, and associated tipping points. Tim is renowned for his work identifying climate tipping points, which informed the setting of the 1.5C climate target, associated net zero targets, and nationally determined contributions. Tim works with policymakers and businesses helping them assess the risks of climate change and nature loss and highlighting the opportunities for 'positive tipping points' that can accelerate change towards net zero. In 2023, Professor Lenton led a team of more than 200 people from over 90 organisations in 26 countries to produce an authoritative assessment of the risks and opportunities of both negative and positive tipping points in the Earth system and society. Coral reefs suffering from climate change are no longer a warning for the future, they are happening now. A landmark scientific report reveals that warm-water reefs have already passed a tipping threshold due to global heating, leading to widespread die-offs and threatening the biodiversity and coastal protection they provide. For the millions of people who depend on reefs for food and livelihoods, this is not just an ocean issue but a global crisis. Global heating is pushing other critical systems — from ice sheets to the Amazon rainforest to the Atlantic Ocean circulation — closer to collapse. The danger is not only ecological, but social and economic, with cascading impacts on communities worldwide. Yet the report also emphasizes the possibility of positive tipping points: rapid shifts in renewable energy, sustainable practices, and collective action that could steer us toward a safer future. In this episode, Andrew Lewin connects the science to lived experiences as a marine biologist and ocean communicator. He shares what these findings mean for the future of coral reefs, why every fraction of a degree of warming matters, and how each of us can contribute to turning the tide. Is Target about to normalize THC drinks? The team unpacks a potentially game-changing move by the retail giant, and what it could mean for the future of cannabis beverages. They unpack the regulatory roadblocks and why the move might be a tipping point. Plus, why PepsiCo is calling fiber “the next protein,” and a look at fresh CPG innovations, including a surprisingly convenient twist on tomato paste. Show notes: 0:25: Back-To-Back. All Day, Anytime. Target's New High. Why Fi? A Tizz, A Daze, And A Gem. – Melissa is back in John's usual seat, and Jacqui has some hard seltzers for the morning (and afternoon and evening). The hosts weigh in on whether this could mark a tipping point for the category, while also unpacking the complex landscape of state-by-state cannabis regulations and the continued lack of federal clarity. The team then explores the emerging trend of fiber as a key health ingredient, with PepsiCo identifying it as “the next protein.” They also run through a lineup of standout new products, including low-ABV and rum-based seltzers, the nostalgic-meets-modern Tizz sodas, Everydaze drink pouches, and an innovative entry into pantry convenience: single-serve tomato paste packets. Melissa mentions Allyvium, a GLP-1 support drink. Ray previews BevNET's upcoming trifecta of industry events in Los Angeles – NOSH Live, BevNET Live, and Brewbound Live – touting the invaluable networking opportunities with CPG leaders across the food, beverage, and beer categories.
