For about a dozen years, the City of Toronto has displayed Israel's flag each spring on a ceremonial courtesy pole to mark the Jewish State's Independence Day. The annual event drew little attention—until the Oct. 7 war reshaped the context and protests have spilled onto local streets ever since. Last fall, a Jewish advocacy group sought to block what would have been the first Palestinian flag raising at Toronto City Hall. The court challenge failed. But the escalating tensions prompted Toronto City Council, including Mayor Olivia Chow, to vote on March 26 to end all foreign flag raisings as of Dec. 1, in hopes of “lowering the temperature.” Chow had previously called the Israeli flag ceremony “divisive.” Toronto now joins other municipalities stepping back from the practice, including Calgary and Mississauga, where a sudden ban adopted on Passover cancelled the planned Israeli flag raising there this week. Passengers (Cuban nationals living in the US) carried assault rifles, handguns, body armor, etc. The group was attempting armed infiltration with terrorist intent. The US position: Nothing is verified yet; US agencies are investigating. Officials (Rubio, Vance, DHS, Coast Guard) are demanding access to survivors. No indication the operation had any US government involvement. The event raises fears of a major diplomatic flashpoint, given: Historical tension (e.g., 1996 Brothers to the Rescue shootdown). Current hardline US posture toward Cuba. 2. Minnesota Medicaid Fraud Crackdown The Trump administration has paused $259.5 million in Medicaid reimbursements to Minnesota over large‑scale fraud concerns. Fraud schemes allegedly include: Paying mothers $1,000 to falsely diagnose children with autism to bill Medicaid. A provider billing for 450 days of work exceeding 24 hours/day. Centers billing for beneficiaries who were already deceased. VP JD Vance and CMS Director Dr. Oz emphasize: The fraud involves home and community‑based services that are hard to audit. Minnesota must submit a corrective action plan or risk losing up to $1 billion in funds. Henry Lie grew up in Pacifica and thought he knew everything there was to know about his hometown, just a few minutes south of San Francisco. So he was shocked to learn about a police raid in the 1950s that targeted LGBTQ+ identifying people. He had never heard of the bar, Hazel's Inn, or that Pacifica had a moment when it was a safe gathering spot for the queer community. He wanted to know more.
