After the devastating 2010 earthquake, she deployed as a trained disaster responder to help with relief efforts. What began as a short-term mission turned into a life-changing journey. “The women of Haiti were so strong, so brave, and so courageous,” Julie explained. “I really just wanted to be like them…I ended up staying and living there for five years and starting this business.”Deux Mains, which means “two hands” in French, is a testament to the power of collaboration and perseverance. The company manufactures luxury handbags, wallets, and other leather goods using deadstock leather and materials from responsible tanneries. These products, crafted by Haitian artisans earning a fair wage, are now sold in major retailers like Nordstrom and Kohl's. Despite the country's instability, Deux Mains continues to thrive. “The business is not only growing but flourishing under the leadership of my Haitian colleagues,” Julie said.Beyond exporting chic handbags, Deux Mains has a significant local impact. Last year, they manufactured and distributed 10,000 pairs of leather school shoes for Haitian children. The factory, powered entirely by solar energy, employs 45 full-time staff and serves as a model for sustainable development in Haiti.Julie's story is one of transformation—both personal and collective. The surge of ICE activity in Minneapolis has led tens of thousands of people to flood downtown for a variety of protests against ICE. But it's kept many others— like those afraid of violence, harassment or arrest by ICE agents— far away from downtown. Events from graduations to conferences to concerts have been canceled or moved outside of the city. The tourism organization Meet Minneapolis conducted a survey about the impact of ICE on tourism in the city. Of the 101 restaurants, event businesses, hotels, arts organizations, attractions and service providers that responded to the survey, 80 percent said they have had canceled, postponed or reduced bookings and sales as a result of ICE activity. 90 percent of those businesses said that fear and stress is affecting the operations of their business.A senior vice president at Meet Minneapolis, Courtney Ries, told MPR News that the 13 Minneapolis hotels that responded to the survey said they lost around $3 million in revenue from the ICE surge this year. That's after more than 40 groups and events connected to the hotels canceled, including two large events at the Minneapolis Convention Center.“When travelers are looking at Minneapolis, there is a lot of uncertainty,” Ries said. “Our job is to advocate for our community and businesses. Who have obviously experienced a lot of heartbreaking emotions over the killings as well as the struggle for businesses to survive.“Meet Minneapolis also surveyed 2,030 American travelers were interested in traveling to Minnesota. 20.6 percent of those said they have altered plans to travel to a destination because of ICE activity.“This is a very acute situation for many of these businesses. We're seeing a lot of questions about how event attendees are going to feel when they come into the city,” Ries said. “We'll continue to host things like the auto show, the boat show, the totally rad vintage fest, the Minnesota school board association meetings, but with more information because attendees have more questions.”

Corrosion rarely announces itself as a "big water problem." It shows up as leaching at the tap, residual loss in the field, premature equipment replacement, and the slow, expensive erosion of decision-quality.  Pat Rosenstiel (CEO) and Wolf Merker (chemist/Chief Science Officer) of Great Water Tech lay out a system-wide view of corrosion control—starting with what changed in Flint from a technical standpoint and moving into why many utilities still struggle to meet expectations when standards and risk assumptions shift.  System-wide corrosion control starts with chemistry and consequences  A source-water change can shift corrosivity fast. If corrosion control does not adjust proactively, the downstream effects show in metal release and public exposure. Wolf stresses the distinction between the technical problem and the political challenges, then points to corrosion control as a solvable technical matter when it is treated as a system condition—not a single asset issue.  Why "phosphate-only" isn't the end of the story  Trace frames what most operators recognize: many municipalities use phosphate inhibitors to form a tenacious film and reduce corrosion. Wolf argues phosphates are "a little bit of old news" in practice and explains the approach Great Water Tech discusses with their German partners—using phosphates and silicates together in the right amounts to create a tighter separation between water and metal.  Barriers, biology, and the disinfection tradeoff  Wolf breaks corrosion drivers into three sources: chemical, biological, and electrochemical (dissimilar metal corrosion). He also ties corrosion to cascading operational decisions—especially disinfectant strategy. If residual loss pushes a system from chlorine to chloramine, Wolf warns that corrosivity can increase dramatically, and that corrosion can amplify the formation of disinfection byproducts as chlorine reacts with what is in the water.  What industrial water treaters should listen for  Pat connects the same barrier logic to industrial priorities—CapEx, OpEx, and lifecycle extension in closed systems (cooling towers, closed chilled loops, boilers). Wolf clarifies that closed systems require different product "flavors," while keeping the core concept consistent: the combined silicate/phosphate approach remains the best path he is aware of.  Listen to the full conversation above.
