You can also see it on YouTube.Devin: What is your superpower?Eric: Scientific method.Unlocking the secret to clean, limitless energy could transform the world's economy, environment, and future. Eric Lerner, President and Chief Scientist at LPPFusion, is leading a team that is taking a radically different approach to nuclear fusion—one that could make abundant, safe energy a reality for all.Unlike massive, billion-dollar fusion projects, LPPFusion focuses on a compact and cost-effective technology. Instead of using traditional deuterium-tritium fuel, which creates dangerous neutrons and requires enormous, expensive machinery, LPPFusion uses hydrogen and boron—both non-radioactive and plentiful. The result? As Eric Lerner explained in this episode of Superpowers for Good, “when they combine, they produce pure helium and no neutrons. And that means we can make the machine very compact, very small, very cheap, and we can convert the energy directly to electricity without using steam turbines and generators, which are very expensive.”This technological shift is also about access. LPPFusion is raising capital through regulated investment crowdfunding, allowing everyday people—not just wealthy, accredited investors—to participate in the future of energy. As Eric shared, “through crowdfunding, we can reach lots of people. And we are reaching lots of people… we are using crowdfunding simply to reach a mass audience that has to know about this technology.”LPPFusion's approach is also unique in its embrace of nature's own plasma instabilities, rather than fighting them. “Most people in the field try to suppress those instabilities… but we imitate nature… the machine we're working with, plasma focus, uses those instabilities to compress and heat the plasma. And that also makes our path a lot easier,” Eric said.Despite raising only a fraction of the capital of their larger competitors, Eric and his team have achieved the best scientific results among private fusion efforts. Their work is openly published, and the opportunity to learn more or even invest is available to all.As the world seeks solutions to the global energy crisis, innovators like Eric Lerner and the LPPFusion team show that transformative ideas often come from smaller, more agile labs. Their work could redefine energy—and now, anyone can help make it happen.tl;dr:Eric Lerner explains how LPPFusion is using hydrogen-boron fuel to pursue cleaner, safer fusion energy.Their approach leverages plasma instabilities, making fusion devices smaller, cheaper, and more efficient.LPPFusion raises funds through regulated investment crowdfunding, inviting broader public participation.Eric shares how scientific method and persistent teamwork drive progress, even with limited resources. The episode highlights the transformative potential of fusion energy and how anyone can get involved. How to Develop Scientific Method As a SuperpowerEric's superpower is the scientific method. He describes it as the power to “not only… predict the future, but to change the future.” It's not merely a set of laboratory procedures, but a disciplined, collaborative way of learning “the truth about the universe, by the method of prediction and test against observations made subsequent to those predictions.” Eric credits mentors like Hannes Alfven for teaching him that the scientific method is about teamwork, persistent experimentation, and understanding the processes that create and sustain things—not just the things themselves.Eric's application of this superpower is best illustrated by his early work in astrophysics, which led him to fusion. As a young researcher, he noticed a regularity in cosmic structures and, guided by scientific curiosity and mentorship, he investigated the electromagnetic processes that might explain it. This search led him to the study of plasma filaments, a discovery that inspired the fusion device at the heart of LPPFusion. He and his team confirmed in the lab that these plasma filaments exist just as they do in the cosmos, validating his methodical, persistent approach and opening a new path for fusion energy.Eric's advice for cultivating this superpower includes:Collaborate with others and learn from mentorsEmbrace persistence—expect many failed experiments before successFocus on understanding processes, not just end resultsRely on prediction and testing, not assumptionsBe transparent and open with your workBy following Eric's example and advice, you can make the scientific method a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileEric Lerner (he/him):President and Chief Scientist, LPPFusion, Inc.About LPPFusion, Inc.: LPPFusion is on a fast path to developing nuclear fusion generators that we predict will produce safe, clean, unlimited energy, far cheaper energy than any present-day energy source. We call our technology Focus Fusion. We predict it can solve our global environmental challenges and at the same time lift the standard of living for all.Website: lppfusion.comBiographical Information: A leading physicist in dense plasma focus research for 40 years. Eric developed an original model of the role of the quantum magnetic field effect and has pioneered in the application of astrophysical results to fusion energy research. He is also the author of the book "the Big Bang Never Happened" and has published many papers in peer-reviewed journals on both fusion energy and cosmology.Support Our SponsorsOur generous sponsors make our work possible, serving impact investors, social entrepreneurs, community builders and diverse founders. He shares how early memories of AFRAM and MLK Day parades shaped his understanding of community engagement—and why cities like Philly and Austin are paying close attention to how Baltimore moves. We explore the long-term vision for Baltimore's creative infrastructure and why Linzy believes artists shouldn't need insider access to make things happen.Topics Covered:What equitable access to city support for artists really looks likeThe cultural impact of free festivals like Artscape and AFRAMCreating a more artist-friendly Baltimore through policy and planningLessons from sister cities and the value of inter-city collaborationWhy the city needs a “State of the Creative Community”

You can also see it on YouTube.Devin: What is your superpower?Marcus: Dealing with failure. Some of the most powerful voices in our culture come from the world of sports. Marcus Daniell, a decorated tennis player and Olympic bronze medalist, understands this better than most. He founded High Impact Athletes to channel that influence toward causes that measurably improve lives. When I spoke with Marcus, he shared how the transition from tennis to philanthropy wasn't sudden. As soon as he began earning enough from his career, he started giving back—carefully. "I didn't really trust the charities that I'd grown up around, and I wanted to do my own research," he said. That research led him to the concept of effective giving: doing the most good per dollar. What started with a personal 1% pledge grew into something much bigger. "There was a greater purpose to the grind of being a tennis player," Marcus said. "Every match that I won had something bigger off the back of it."That sense of purpose eventually inspired High Impact Athletes. Marcus guessed he'd have to persuade fellow athletes one by one, but the response surpassed expectations. "Very quickly it became obvious that there was a real appetite amongst the athlete community for something they could trust."Today, the organization has over 230 elite athletes across 50 sports and 35 countries. They're not just giving—they're amplifying impact by inspiring fans to do the same. "Athletes have a place in society where they have a really powerful voice," Marcus explained. "They can cut through different levels of society."The group recently partnered with High Rocks, a global fitness event series, to expand peer-to-peer fundraising. Participants can support causes like global health, climate change, mental health and women's empowerment. While High Impact Athletes isn't currently running a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign, the model it showcases is one worth noting. It proves that purpose and influence can merge to make philanthropy more effective and more human. The emotional impact is tangible. One athlete shared with Marcus that his High Impact Athletes key rings, earned for hitting donation milestones, were as meaningful as any sports medal. "That really touched me," Marcus said. This isn't just about giving. It's about creating lasting meaning from influence—and Marcus is helping athletes do just that.tl;dr:Marcus Daniell shares how Olympic-level tennis success led him to a life of purpose-driven philanthropy.High Impact Athletes empowers elite athletes to give effectively and mobilize fans for global good.Marcus explains that charity effectiveness varies greatly, making donation impact a key focus for change.Through partnerships like High Rocks, High Impact Athletes expands reach via peer-to-peer fundraising events.Marcus reveals his superpower—dealing with failure—and how resilience fueled both his athletic and nonprofit journeys. How to Develop Dealing with Failure As a SuperpowerMarcus Daniell describes his superpower as the ability to productively deal with failure. He explains that this skill is essential for professional athletes, who face constant challenges and losses. “In order to be a successful tennis player, you must be able to deal with failure productively,” Marcus said during today's episode. He emphasizes the importance of processing setbacks, learning from mistakes, and moving forward with renewed focus.Marcus shared a moving example from the 2016 Rio Olympics. After losing a first-round tennis match with match points against Canada, he and his partner, Michael Venus, were devastated. Though it took hours to process the emotions, they eventually had a heartfelt conversation, owning their mistakes and vowing to return stronger. This commitment paid off, as the duo later earned a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, a triumph Marcus cherishes deeply.Tips for Developing Resilience:Process Emotions: Allow yourself time to feel and understand your disappointment before moving on.Own Your Mistakes: Acknowledge your role in setbacks without dwelling on them.Commit to Growth: Use failure as a motivator to improve and set new goals.Find Perspective: Compare challenges to broader contexts to reduce their emotional weight.Focus on the Future: Create a tangible plan to move forward, shifting energy toward progress.By following Marcus' example and advice, you can make resilience a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileMarcus Daniell (he/him):Founder and Executive Director, High Impact AthletesAbout High Impact Athletes: At HIA we are transforming how sport serves the world. We connect world-class athletes with world-class charities—organizations that bring a high-performance mindset to making positive change. Our athlete community is a star-studded lineup of world champions, Olympic champions, world record holders and league professionals taking action and making a difference. Despite sport's immense potential to drive change, there's a critical gap between possibility and reality. Not all charities are created equal. Every year, billions flow into feel-good causes and foundations with limited outcomes, chasing nice stories over tangible progress. Less than 1% of global philanthropy follows the data to identify and support the highest-performing charities.Athletes have seized their place, not just in sport, but in society, leading conversations and commanding global attention on and off the field. Given the right platform, they can inspire the world to solve two critical problems in philanthropy: how much we choose to give, and where our giving goes. Known for his sportsmanship and powerful presence on court, he competed at the highest levels of the sport, reaching Grand Slam quarterfinals and representing New Zealand in numerous Davis Cup ties.Beyond his athletic achievements, Daniell has distinguished himself as a leading advocate for effective altruism in sport. He founded High Impact Athletes, a nonprofit connecting elite athletes with the world's most effective charities, and pledged to donate at least 10% of his lifetime earnings to high-impact causes. His leadership has garnered respect across the tennis world and beyond, including election to the ATP Player Council.Residing in New York and recently retired after a 17-year professional career, Daniell remains a powerful voice for using sport as a platform for good. First, Johnson chats with Rick Farman and Allen Scott, cofounders of the Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park. Farman and Scott dive into the event's origin story, evolution, and some of their favorite moments over the years. “A big highlight for me personally was in 2013 when we had Paul McCartney headline the festival,” shares Scott. “It felt like most of the festival was there singing, ‘Hey Jude' and I had tears in my eyes.” The two also offer a preview of what attendees can expect this year, including major headliners, immersive art installations, and unexpected features that make Outside Lands a truly San Francisco experience. Beyond the music, the duo highlight the festival's impressive food, wine, and beer offerings. Next, travel journalist Katrina Brown Hunt joins the show to share her list of unusual and entertaining events happening across California this summer and fall. From fruit-themed festivals to offbeat cultural celebrations and epic sporting events, Hunt highlights fun, family-friendly happenings that showcase the state's creativity and character: “Where else are you going to find some good garlic ice cream in the middle of the summer?” Finally, Johnson welcomes Paolo Di Croce, director general and festival organizer for the Terra Madre Americas food festival, a slow food festival making its U.S. debut this September in Sacramento. Di Croce outlines what visitors can expect from the event's first U.S. edition, including hands-on workshops, international tastings, live music, panel discussions, and appearances by celebrity chefs. “The goal is really to be open to learn and to try something different,” says Di Croce.

Art shares remarkable insights from his journey and his book "Making Seamless Sales," revealing the magic of fusing customer-centric strategies with a robust collaboration between sales engineers and account managers. Discover how his innovative Sales Opportunity Snapshot aligns sales processes with buying behaviors to nurture enduring client relationships, especially within the SaaS and B2B landscapes. His approach illuminates the path from traditional sales techniques to cultivating long-term success by truly understanding and prioritizing customer needs.  Unravel the synergy between pre-sales and sales functions as we explore the hidden potential that resides in their integration. Art explains how bridging this gap can dramatically enhance win rates, transforming sales from a linear progression to a dynamic, continuous cycle. This episode emphasizes the vital role of client success right from the beginning, and how aligning sales with marketing through effective CRM systems can solidify lasting customer relationships. By adopting a unified pre-sales and sales strategy, companies are not just selling a product but ensuring holistic solution enablement that meets and exceeds client expectations.  Our conversation also ventures into the nuanced realm of sales compensation, particularly in the SaaS and consumption-based sectors. Art advocates for rewarding sales teams based on total contract value and client usage, rather than just initial sales. We tackle the challenges of CRM adoption, underscoring the importance of comprehensive training and impeccable data management. It's through effective communication, continuous process improvement, and a steadfast commitment to client success that businesses can achieve sustainable growth. Join us as we uncover how optimizing sales strategies and fostering collaboration leads to a thriving business environment.  Art helps B2B sales teams boost revenue, win rates, margins, and client satisfaction through his SEAMless Sales® System—offered via speaking engagements, workshops, tools, and his new book Making SEAMless Sales.  With 25 years in presales and sales enablement, and two decades in end-user, sales, and leadership roles, Art brings deep experience to every engagement. After starting in engineering, he shifted into enterprise software, rising through presales and sales leadership before launching his own sales enablement firm in 2004.  Since 2009, Art has led global sales transformation initiatives, including a program that drove a 22% increase in bookings and a 16-point win rate jump for a major electronics manufacturer—who remains a client to this day.  Based in Pittsburgh, PA, Art enjoys family time, travel, and hands-on projects when he's not helping sales teams achieve lasting results.    Quotes: "The magic of sales success lies in truly understanding and prioritizing customer needs. Welcome back to Design for the Creative Mind, the podcast where we get real about what it actually takes to build a beautiful and profitable interior design business. In this episode, Michelle kicks off a brand-new series called Booked by Accident vs. Booked by Design—a must-listen if you've ever wondered why your dream clients still aren't showing up, even though you're doing “all the right things.” Michelle unpacks what's really going on in today's economy and why relying on referrals, a pretty Instagram feed, or a solid reputation alone just isn't enough anymore. Here's what she covers: Why “just do good work and the clients will come” is outdated advice The difference between visibility and actual connection How to market like a guide, not a design hero Why marketing to your peers is a trap What clients are actually looking for (hint: it's not a waterfall edge) The truth about consistency vs. constant content creation If your leads have slowed down, are inconsistent, or just aren't aligned, you're going to want to hear this. Free Live Workshop Invitation: Michelle is also inviting you to a free three-day live workshop called Booked by Design—specifically created for interior designers who are ready to attract aligned, consistent clients. Here's what you'll learn over three days: Day One: How to nail your message and communicate your value Day Two: Marketing strategies that actually work right now (without reels or burnout) Day Three: A live Q&A and action-planning session so you know exactly what to do next The workshop runs August 4–6 at 12 p.m. Central Time, and it's completely free. You can register at thedesignbakehouse.com under the Events section, or click the link in the show notes. Coming Up Next Week: Michelle dives into why relying on referrals isn't a real marketing strategy—and what you can do instead. If you've been clinging to word-of-mouth alone, this one's for you. Final Thought: You can build a business that gets booked consistently. You can create marketing that doesn't feel overwhelming. You can attract dream clients without burning out. But it won't happen by accident. It happens by design.

Arcana Coelestia 7506(2)... the truths and goods of those who are of the church and are condemned, are not from the good of charity, and thus are not spiritual; they indeed flow in through heaven, but are received in cold and thick darkness-in cold because there is no good of charity, in thick darkness because the light by which they receive them is as it were a light of winter, which compared to the light of heaven is thick darkness. Nor are their interiors open to heaven, but to the world, into which they determine the influx of truth and good from heaven; from this also the ideas they have of the good and truth of faith are merely natural, nay, material, which in the spiritual world are represented as ugly, and having no human likeness. But the ideas of the truth and good of faith of those who are of the church and are saved, are spiritual, and although they terminate in material things of the world, yet they are separate from them, for they can be elevated from them. In the spiritual world the ideas of these persons are represented as beautiful, and have the likeness of a man. Such is the difference, however much they may appear alike in the outward form. The allure of the 'serpent' thinking True Christian Religion 48 [17] By the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is signified a man who believes that he lives from himself, and not from God; thus that love and wisdom, charity and faith, that is, good and truth, are in a man as his own, and not God's. He believes this because he thinks and wills, speaks and acts to all appearance as if from himself; and because a man by such a belief persuades himself that he is a god, therefore the serpent said: "God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God (A.V., gods), knowing good and evil" Genesis 3:5. [18] By eating of those trees is signified reception and appropriation: by eating of the tree of life, the reception of eternal life, and by eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the reception of eternal death or damnation. By the serpent is meant the devil as to the love of self and the pride of self-intelligence.  Conjugial Love 353... And because from birth every man has the inclination to love himself, therefore, lest he perish by reason of the love of self and the pride of self-intelligence, it was provided from creation that that love should be transcribed into the wife, and that, implanted in her from birth, should be the inclination to love the intelligence and wisdom of her man and thus the man himself. Therefore, a wife continually draws her man's pride of self-intelligence to herself, extinguishing it in him and vivifying it in herself, and so turning it into conjugial love, a love which she fills with amenities beyond measure. This is provided by the Lord lest the pride of self-intelligence so greatly infatuate man that he believes himself to be intelligent and wise from himself and not from the Lord, and thus desires to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He would then believe himself to be like God and even, according to the speech and persuasion of the serpent - the love of self-intelligence - to be God. Therefore, after eating, the man was cast out of paradise and the way to the tree of life was guarded by a cherub. Spiritually understood, paradise is intelligence; eating of the tree of life is understanding and being wise from the Lord, and eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is understanding and being wise from one's self. Third Round posts are short audio clips taken from Round 3 comments offered in the online Logopraxis Life Group meetings. How a VC Fund May Shut Down Early Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. Venture Capital funds typically run on ten-year cycles. There are some conditions in which the VC fund may shut down early. Here's a list of reasons: Key persons -- the Limited Partners invested in a fund that has a certain number of key persons.  If the number falls off, then the fund may suspend activities until a replacement is found. The fund managers are found to be liable for fraud or gross negligence. In this case, the fund may shut down and return the funds to the Limited Partners. In other cases, the fund may replace the managers and continue on. Limited Partners want to shut down the fund -- the market may have changed, or the investment thesis may no longer be viable. In this case, the Limited Partners could demand their funds returned. Alternatively, the Limited Partners could vote to fund a new investment thesis. The VC fund managers may be found to have a conflict of interest. The Limited Partners could demand the return of their uninvested capital. Consider these points in running or investing in a VC fund.   Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding. In this episode, Trace Blackmore welcomes back Tom Hutchison, Chairman of the Board, HOH Water Technology, to reflect on what it really takes to step out of day-to-day leadership—and do it well. As a multi-decade leader in water treatment, Tom shares the personal, professional, and organizational insights that shaped his transition from CEO to chairman and what it means to lead a business into its next generation.  From early succession conversations to the unspoken anxieties of staff, Hutch offers a rare look behind the curtain of legacy-building in industrial water treatment. And as private equity plays a growing role in the industry, Tom unpacks the very real choices facing owners and teams alike—with clarity and compassion. Navigating Leadership Through Change  Tom begins by describing the decision to shift from day-to-day leadership to a board-level role. He reflects on the emotional weight of that process and the internal work required to detach his identity from his title. Rather than clinging to authority, he outlines the importance of trust and letting emerging leaders find their voice—even when it means they'll make different decisions.  He also highlights the human cost of poor planning. “Death,” as Tom puts it bluntly, “is not a strategy.” Waiting too long or failing to mentor successors doesn't just disrupt the business—it risks unraveling everything you've built. Succession Planning and Cultural Continuity  Trace and Tom dive into the mechanics of succession planning—not just from an ownership perspective, but a cultural one. Tom explains how HOH built an internal environment where values weren't just posted on the wall but deeply lived. This foundation allowed the company to navigate major transitions, including its eventual move into private equity, without losing its identity.  He also warns about the consequences of delayed planning. Waiting too long, he says, puts the business, its people, and its principles at risk.    Preparing for Private Equity—Without Losing Yourself  One of the most practical parts of the conversation centers on HOH's private equity journey. Tom shares how they vetted buyers not just for financial capacity, but for cultural alignment. He outlines how his team clarified their mission and values before the deal, which ultimately helped preserve their vision after the transition.  Rather than resist change, HOH treated the shift as an opportunity to reinforce their core—while expanding their reach.   The Long Arc of Legacy  Tom closes with a powerful meditation on leadership legacy. He explains that real legacy isn't about being remembered—it's about ensuring the business can thrive without you. He challenges listeners to think beyond titles, financial outcomes, or even strategy, and focus on the enduring impact of culture, mentorship, and examples.  Trace echoes this with a reminder that great leaders not only lead—they leave well. If you're leading a team, planning your exit, or preparing the next generation of leadership, this episode is a must-listen.  To take this conversation further, download the Discussion Guide located in the Connect with the Guest section of the show notes.
