966: LEADERSHIP MINDSET: The Truth About the Authenticity Trap for Women Leaders

    The Shameless Mom Academy

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2025 33:06

In this episode, I'm exposing the Authenticity Trap for you.  The Authenticity Trap is the mixed messages women get about “being themselves.” We're told authenticity is the key to trust, confidence, and influence, yet many of us were conditioned to 1) think we need to lead like men if we want to make it to the top to serve, and 2) constantly abandon our own needs and wants to center and care for those around us. That means when we try to show up authentically, we often bump up against years of social conditioning that taught us to prioritize likability over authenticity. The authenticity trap is what happens when the call to “be yourself” collides with systems and expectations that were never designed to make room for your full, real self. In this episode, I unpack why so many women struggle with authenticity in leadership.  It's not because we lack confidence or clarity, but because we've learned to perform leadership instead of embodying it in a way that is true to who we are. We've been rewarded for being agreeable, accommodating, and endlessly capable, even when that performance costs us energy, boundaries, and joy. The result of the Authenticity Trap is burnout, disconnection, and missed opportunities to share your best self with the world.  Of course, I'm not going to leave you hanging without an action plan.  We will dig into simple ways to begin reclaiming your authenticity as a daily leadership practice. We'll talk about getting clear on your values and boundaries, noticing when you're performing versus connecting, and experimenting with small, brave acts of honesty and self-expression. My hope is that you walk away knowing that authenticity isn't a luxury or a buzzword.  It's a muscle that, when strengthened, allows you to tap into who you truly are when you disconnect from all the noise around you. When you strengthen this muscle and step out of the Authenticity Trap, you not only lead with more joy, ease, and impact — you also give everyone around you permission to do the same. In this episode of The Untrapped Podcast, Keith drops a brutally honest look at the least talked about part of running a landscaping business: where the hell do you store your equipment when you're just starting out? From hiding trailers in random parking lots to begging for space at a factory, Keith opens up about the stress, fear, and shame that hits when you're hustling with no place to park your truck, trailer, or tools—and how that chaos bleeds into your confidence, marriage, and mindset. But the conversation goes way deeper than storage. Keith breaks down the psychological tug-of-war every new business owner faces: survival mode vs. vision mode. He shares real stories of towing threats, HOA fines, break-ins, and racing against storage-unit closing times… then contrasts that with the moments of inspiration, clarity, and big dreams that come only when the noise finally stops. You'll hear about maintaining perspective during 90-day sprints, avoiding burnout in the busy season, and why losing your "larger view" is what actually drags you into apathy and depression. This is Keith at his realest—no sugarcoating, no guru talk. Just the raw truth about anxiety, responsibility, growing up as a business owner, and refusing to stay trapped. If you've ever felt overwhelmed, ashamed, or one breakdown away from parking your trailer in a stranger's yard out of desperation… this episode is your reminder: you're not alone, you're not crazy, and you can build the stability and freedom you're fighting for.     "If you feel overwhelmed, that's not a sign to quit. It's a sign you're on the edge of leveling up." – Keith Kalfas   Topics Covered: The early grind of having nowhere to store your truck, trailer, or tools Towing scares, HOA drama, and hiding equipment just to stay afloat How constant anxiety leads to rushed, survival-mode decisions Working nonstop yet still feeling like you're falling behind Being broke forcing creativity, resilience, and uncomfortable growth Breaking out of "employee thinking" and stepping into an owner mindset Community tips and real-time advice from other contractors How different seasons shift your mindset—hustle mode vs. big-picture mode The burnout loop: long days, shrinking perspective, and creeping depression Why industry events and community support (like GIE) keep you sane and motivated   Key Takeaways Solve the "Parking Problem" EarlyYour sanity depends on stability. A reliable place to store your trailer and equipment isn't a luxury—it's foundational. Lock in a storage lot, co-op deal, client yard, or commercial space early so you're not living in constant fear of tows, fines, or break-ins. Survival Mode Isn't a Business Plan Shift from panic decisions to long-view leadership. When you're overwhelmed, every problem feels like a crisis. But long-term success comes from stepping out of reaction mode—planning seasons, protecting your mindset, and keeping perspective even when the grind gets ugly.per day. Bigger tickets + fewer trips = cleaner math and calmer schedule. Community Keeps You From Breaking Don't build alone—borrow strength from others. Events like GIE, industry groups, and fellow contractors give you clarity, solutions, and the reminder that you're not the only one fighting through chaos. The right community can shorten your learning curve and keep you moving when you'd otherwise burn out.   Connect with Keith Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/keithkalfas/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thelandscapingemployeetrap Website: https://www.keithkalfas.com/resources Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@keith-kalfas   Resources and Websites:  Start Getting Leads Now https://www.footbridgemedia.com/keith The Untrapped Alliance: https://www.keithkalfas.com/alliance Resources You Need To Build A Successful Business https://www.keithkalfas.com/resources

Pete notified Secret Service agent Mike Howard, who moved Marina, Margarite, and the two babies to the Six Flags Inn for interrogation. Margarite immediately began campaigning, demanding her "hero" son be rehabilitated as an innocent CIA/FBI agent. Pete's presence was vital, as Marina feared the Secret Service were the KGB. A crucial interrogation point was the famous photo of Lee with his rifle; Marina was reluctant to confess she took it, fearing reprisal. Upon hearing Lee was dead, Margarite demanded burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Guest: Paul Gregory.

"The More You Know" - Robin Deal A million-gallon-a-day perspective, distilled into actionable steps. Robin Deal, AquaPure Product Manager at Hubbard-Hall unpacks how seasoned pros can squeeze more performance—and less sludge—out of industrial wastewater systems without compromising compliance or plant uptime.    From "clear water in a jar" to stable discharge in the field  Robin details a practical jar-testing workflow: start from upstream processes, target pH using hydroxide/sulfide solubility curves, choose the right coagulant (aluminum, iron, calcium, lanthanum, or organics), and validate against metals/COD/BOD/phosphorus before scaling. The test bench isn't the finish line; it's the feasibility gate when you're treating 150,000+ gpd.  Lean wastewater: cost center or controllable system?  Commodity choices (lime, alum, ferric) can generate 70–85% more sludge than optimized blends—driving hazardous waste hauling, clogging lines, and shortening pump life. Robin reframes the "penny-per-pound" price war into a total-system economics conversation: sludge recyclability, maintenance cycles, and realistic break-even targets.  PFAS: remove now, plan to destroy  For hex-chrome platers and other industrial dischargers, Robin shares near-term and emerging options: carbon filtration for immediate removal, evaporation/condensation where capital exists, and destruction pathways under evaluation—advanced oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, "thermobotic agglomeration," and ball milling—with an eye on evolving limits and cost realities.  One Water thinking for manufacturers  "Water is water." Robin introduces the One Water mindset for plant leaders: tighten internal loops, reduce community draw and discharge impact, and align non-contact, potable, and wastewater under one stewardship model. It's not a club—it's a decision framework that's already influencing global brands and drought-stressed regions.  Treat each round of testing as a hypothesis check, each chemical as a system lever, and each gallon as a shared resource. That's how leaders turn compliance into predictable results. How To Evaluate AI Startups for Investment Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. Artificial intelligence brings a new type of startup to the investor for funding. Here is how to evaluate AI startups for investment. Market opportunity. For new applications that have never been done before, AI offers a greenfield opportunity. Estimate the current size of the target market and the value of selling to each one. This often generates an outsized total available market as one solution could cover the entire market. For existing applications that AI enhances, use the existing sales figures for products sold into the market and add the incremental value of the AI-enabled product. Product opportunity. Review how AI-enablement will enhance the capabilities of the product. Will this be a major or minor productivity improvement? Moat. How much of a moat will AI bring to the product? The more algorithm tuning and training data used, the stronger the moat. Deployment. What will it take to deploy the solution? The broader the go-to-market strategy, the more valuable the product. Consider these elements in evaluating an AI startup for investment. Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding. Let's go startup something today. _______________________________________________________ For more episodes from Investor Connect, please visit the site at: http://investorconnect.org Check out our other podcasts here: https://investorconnect.org/ For Investors check out: https://tencapital.group/investor-landing/ For Startups check out: https://tencapital.group/company-landing/ For eGuides check out: https://tencapital.group/education/ For upcoming Events, check out https://tencapital.group/events/ For Feedback please contact info@tencapital.group Please follow, share, and leave a review. Under the leadership of CEO Hiten Sonpal, the company has developed a groundbreaking alternative to hydraulics called Beltdraulics, inspired by the efficiency of human muscles. This innovative technology replaces traditional hydraulics, which rely on fluids and compression, with electric systems that use belts to mimic the tension in muscle fibers.Hiten explained, “Hydraulics required pumps, reservoirs, and hoses. They were inefficient and leaked everywhere. So, [the founders of RISE Robotics] came up with an alternative technology that we now call Beltdraulics.” Beltdraulics offers remarkable advantages, being three times faster, three times more efficient, and three times more durable than traditional hydraulic systems. The company's work is more than just an engineering feat—it's a green revolution. RISE Robotics' technology is already helping industries like oil and gas reduce emissions and improve efficiency. For example, their equipment can cut battery size requirements in half, reducing costs and infrastructure demands while doubling productivity. “If there's anything we can do to clean up [polluting industries], it would be fantastic from a company mission perspective,” Hiten said.RISE Robotics is also making waves with government contracts, including partnerships with the Department of Defense and interest from sectors like maritime, forestry, and mining. The potential applications for their technology are nearly limitless, as hydraulics are used in everything from cranes to farm equipment. As part of its growth strategy, RISE Robotics is raising capital through a regulated crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder. Hiten emphasized that the campaign offers investors terms similar to those of institutional backers, making this an exciting opportunity for individuals to invest in a clean, green future.RISE Robotics is not just innovating; it's paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable industrial landscape.tl;dr:Hiten Sonpal introduced how RISE Robotics is replacing hydraulics with clean electric systems.Hiten explained the company's Beltdraulics technology, inspired by muscle fibers, that's faster and more efficient.RISE Robotics is disrupting industries, from oil and gas to defense, while reducing emissions and costs.Hiten shared his superpower: building high-performing teams through diversity, psychological safety, and collaboration.Investors can join RISE Robotics' mission by participating in its Wefunder crowdfunding campaign. How to Develop Building High-Performing Teams As a SuperpowerHiten's superpower lies in his ability to build and lead high-performing teams. He explained, “To have a high-performing team, you need diversity—diversity of experiences, ideas, passions, and interests.” He also emphasized the importance of fostering “a culture of healthy conflict” where team members feel psychologically safe to voice their ideas and concerns. This environment enables teams to collaborate effectively, expand possibilities, and achieve more than they would individually. One powerful example of Hiten's superpower in action came during his time at iRobot. After a challenging trip to China, one of his team members called him out during a retrospective for not providing enough central coordination. Instead of reacting defensively, Hiten saw this as a success—a reflection of the psychological safety he'd created within the team. This openness allowed the team to improve and ultimately succeed. To develop this superpower, Hiten suggests creating a culture where feedback is welcomed and encouraged, even when it's directed at leadership. He also advises reducing complexity for teams by narrowing focus and cutting scope on projects, enabling them to move forward effectively.By following Hiten's example and advice, you can make building high-performing teams a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileHiten Sonpal (he/him):CEO, RISE® RoboticsAbout RISE® Robotics: RISE Robotics is enabling the electification and automation of heavy machinery using Beltdraulics, it's propreitary fluid-free low-maintenance alternative to hydraulics that is 3x faster, 3x more efficient and 100% digital. Laurel Ridge Community College: Jeff Sinclair's Path from Army to Pharmacy

As the Shenandoah Valley turns golden with autumn, The Valley Today host Janet Michael, joins Laurel Ridge Community College's Director of PR and Special Events, Brandy Hawkins Boies, and Jeff Sinclair, an Army veteran whose educational journey has inspired many. Their conversation—timed perfectly for Veterans Week—offers a heartfelt look at how one man's post-military path leads from uncertainty to academic success and a future in pharmacy. From Service to Self-Discovery After leaving the Army, Jeff Sinclair admits he needed time to decompress. "The military was all I ever thought about," he shares. With no clear direction, he decides to enroll at Laurel Ridge Community College, initially majoring in cybersecurity because it seemed practical. But reality hit when he realizes his younger classmates had grown up immersed in technology while he struggled to catch up. "I was in deep water," he says. "Math made more sense—it was logical." That realization led him to switch majors, earning an Associate of Science with a specialization in engineering. He wanted a foundation that could "translate into a career" and make the best use of his military benefits. Finding Mentorship and Meaning Jeff credits Dr. Sam Dillender, his chemistry professor at Laurel Ridge, for sparking his passion for science. "He broke down complex material in a way that made it stick," Jeff recalls. "He did a reverse classroom—so we came in with questions ready. It changed everything." That mentorship shaped Jeff's path. After completing his associate degree, he transferred to Shenandoah University, earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in biology, and he is now pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy at Shenandoah's Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy. The Power of Support: Veterans Services at Laurel Ridge Transitioning from the military to civilian life can be daunting. For Jeff, that transition was eased by Sharon Painter, the college's veterans coordinator. "She was phenomenal—one-stop shopping," he says. "She handled everything from class schedules to GI Bill benefits. I thought every school would be like that!" Brandy notes that the Veteran Services Center, led by Painter and Jeanmarie Corrado, plays a vital role for students like Jeff. "They're there to support veterans and their families," she explains. "College can be intimidating, and the paperwork for benefits can be overwhelming. Having experts who can guide you through it is essential." Learning Flexibility in a Changing World Jeff's college career straddled the pandemic, forcing him into online learning—a challenge that turned into an advantage. "COVID prepared me for distance education," he says. "Later, when I was at the University of North Dakota, I was able to attend virtually, review recorded lectures, and manage my studies independently. Laurel Ridge gave me that foundation." Brandy adds that such flexibility is now a hallmark of the community college. "Students can start at Laurel Ridge and transfer anywhere," she says. "Our agreements with universities across Virginia make education accessible without leaving the Valley." "Future Jeff's Problem": Taking Life One Step at a Time When asked where he hopes to be in a few years, Jeff smiles. "That's future Jeff's problem," he laughs. Still, he envisions working as a pharmacist—perhaps near his children in Boise, Idaho. His easy humor and humility reflect a grounded perspective: "One step at a time," he says. "Each degree led to the next." His story underscores the value of community colleges as launchpads for veterans. "Starting at Laurel Ridge was less intimidating," he explains. "Professors were personable, approachable, and patient. It took the stress out of learning." Advice for Fellow Veterans For veterans considering higher education, Jeff's message is simple: "Do it." He acknowledges that going back to school in his late 30s was intimidating at first. "But you take it one bite at a time—like eating an elephant," he says. "Start small. An associate degree gives you something to show for your work and the motivation to keep going." Brandy agrees. "You don't have to have it all figured out," she says. "Just take that first step. We'll help you chart your path." Honoring Veterans at Laurel Ridge During Veterans Appreciation Week, Laurel Ridge celebrates service members through thank-you card stations, memorabilia displays, a luncheon, and even a military-themed trivia game. These events help connect veterans to the campus community, easing that "first day of school" anxiety. "Events like these make walking in the door easier," Jeff reflects. "You meet people who've been through it and can share what they learned." From Cybersecurity to Chemistry: The Full Circle Jeff's winding academic journey—from cybersecurity to engineering to chemistry and finally pharmacy—demonstrates that success rarely follows a straight line. As Brandy sums up: "You're the perfect example of taking it one step at a time. You didn't know where you'd end up—but you kept moving forward." Jeff's humility shines through at the end of the interview. "I just hope I don't let anybody down," he said with a grin. Janet closes with a hopeful smile: "I can't wait to walk into a pharmacy one day and say, 'Hey—I know you!'" Sidebar: Resources for Veterans Laurel Ridge Community College Veteran Services

Che Guevara – the man whose name became a global symbol of rebellion and justice. Born in Argentina, Ernesto “Che” Guevara transformed from a curious medical student into a fearless revolutionary who challenged empires. His deep compassion for the poor and oppressed pushed him to fight alongside Fidel Castro in Cuba's liberation, where his courage, strategy, and leadership changed history. From the jungles of Cuba to the mountains of Congo and Bolivia, Che's relentless spirit inspired millions to dream of freedom. He was not just a guerilla commander but also a thinker, writer, and a voice for the voiceless. Even after his death, his words and image ignite revolutions of thought across continents. Che's life is a story of ideals, sacrifice, and the belief that one determined soul can change the fate of nations. KiranPrabha narrates the interesting life journey of Che Guevara in this 16 part series. This is Part -14. I was thrilled when I learned that past podcast guest Jessica Frew wrote an entire book on decision-making.  Decision fatigue is real and so very exhausting.  It holds us back from taking action, best leveraging our time and energy, and truly trusting ourselves.  Jessica is a firecracker and I know this conversation will give you some great AHA's about becoming a more decisive person.   Jessica Frew is an author, speaker, coach, wife, ex-wife, mom, stepmom, and BOLD action taker.  She believes that you find true peace, connection and confidence by making your next best decision.  Jessica helps you make clear, confident, and concise decisions to lead a BOLD life that is in alignment with who you were created to be while leaving behind overthinking, people pleasing, and the need to justify your decisions through her proven Be.Be.Be Decision Making Formula.  Her new book, Shove Your Shoulds: Become a Decision-Making Badass & Live the Life You Deserve is all about unlearning the decision-making patterns we were taught (especially as women, mothers, and leaders) and embracing choices that actually feel aligned. Listen in to hear Jessica share: The power in giving yourself permission to evolve yourself and your work over time How your “shoulds” quietly hijack your decision-making and breed negative self-judgment How her narrative around being a stepmom held her back and how she unpacked this old narrative to write a new, better one How to unravel long-term narratives that keep us stuck and how writing your own narratives elevates you as a leader Why women hold so much fear around decisiveness The connection between indecision and fear and how to reclaim your power by embracing decisiveness The actual (simple) steps you can take in releasing an old narrative that is no longer serving you or possibly even harming you Links Mentioned: Get Jessica's Book, Shove Your Shoulds: https://shoveyourshoulds.com/ Follow Jessica on IG: https://www.instagram.com/heyjessicafrew/ [NOVEMBER 20th] Join my 90-minute Leadership Roundtable, Thriving in Leadership in Uncertain Times: saradean.com/roundtable [OPEN ENROLLMENT] Join Sara's Aligned Leadership Incubator: saradean.com/aligned [LISTENER SURVEY] Let me know what Programs & Events you want me to host in 2026: saradean.com/survey Hire me to speak: saradean.com/speaking Coach with me: https://saradean.com/executive-coaching-services Connect with me on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/saradeanspeaks Watch Shameless Leadership episodes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@saradeanspeaks Learn more about your ad choices.
