AJ Spieringshoek took the opportunity of being called up as an assistant coach for the National team in 2019, including mentoring the Emerging South Africa side during the SPAR Indoor Series in Durban. He continues to take every opportunity to learn. At the 2020 Indoor IPT he led Western Province to their first Indoor IPT final in many years. During the tournament I caught up with AJ to chat all things hockey as well as ultra distance running, the Unogwaja Challenge and the travel industry.

Kim Hubach has done it all for South African Hockey. Having played more than 100 times for the national team, including at two FIH Hockey World Cups, the Northern Blues faithful continues to live for the game with the Hubach Hockey Academy now in full swing. At the 2019 Senior IPT Kim was honoured by her province for playing in her 20th consecutive IPT tournament that was crowned with victory in the final against their Southern Gauteng neighbours. Kim joined Derek and Jabu to chat all things hockey, the highs, the lows and what it means to have played 20 IPT tournaments.
In 2019 Nic Spooner become a household name in South African Hockey. He scored the match-winning goal against the USA in the FIH Series Finals, a game that essentially qualified South Africa for the Tokyo Olympics. He did it with just 23 seconds left on the clock. A few months later he bagged a hat-trick in the African Hockey Road to Tokyo final game against Egypt to cement that Olympic Spot. Having played in the Hockey India League and in the German top league for a number of years it was a thrilling opportunity for the Hockey 24 Seven duo to sit down and chat all things hockey with Spoons.
It's been almost a year since Garreth "Springs" Ewing was appointed as the SA National Hockey Men's coach and what a year it was. South Africa qualified for the Tokyo Olympic games through making the final of the FIH Hockey Series Final as well as winning the African Hockey Road to Tokyo Event in Stellenbosch. Ayden Shrives became the first man in international hockey to have played, and umpired at the Indoor Hockey World Cup. Tyson Dlungwana is just 22 years of age but can already include a Commonwealth Games, African Cup and Hockey World Cup on his impressive hockey CV. Ahead of the 2019 African Hockey Road to Tokyo Qualifying Event Derek and Jabu sat and chatted all things hockey (and a little bit of football) with the South African star. Unfortunately due to a foot injury Tyson was ruled out of the Stellenbosch event, which South Africa won and secured a place at the Olympic Games in Tokyo for 2020. Dlungwana will now be looking to make that squad and help his hockey CV shine even more.

Recently the Hockey 24 Seven team, in collaboration with Rayder Media, were invited to the SPAR Indoor Series at Danville Girls School in Durban North. While watching SPAR South Africa take on Zimbabwe and Botswana, we were fortunate enough to also see the next batch of superstars take to the court for SPAR Emerging South Africa. The FIH Hockey Series Finals in Valencia is upon us, and Supergroup South Africa kick-start their campaign against Wales. Supergroup hosted a farewell function for the team ahead of the tournament at Bryanston Country Club and Jabu and Derek were lucky enough to join the festivities. Of course the night wasn't just about the vibe, as the guys got to chat to a host of players, because thats how Hockey 24 Seven rolls! Allistar Fredericks became a hero for many when he became the first player of colour to represent the South African men's hockey team, who went on to score 57 goals in just 59 matches. He also participated at the 1996 Olympic Games, and delivered South Africa's team speech to then-President Nelson Mandela at his Pretoria home before the squad departed for Atlanta. Despite retiring in 1998, hockey is still part of Fredericks' life, and Derek and Jabu caught up with the family man to discuss the sport and his many, many highlights.
