As Chartered Accountants Ireland surpasses 40,000 members, it has today published a new position paper on the future of AI and accountancy. The largest professional body on the island of Ireland is calling on Government to invest in AI-ready infrastructure, strengthen supports for SME adoption and embed AI skills and literacy across the education system. The position paper was launched alongside Deputy Malcolm Byrne T.D., Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence. Accountants as trusted advisors The paper argues that in an AI-driven economy, accountants will play an increasingly important role as trusted business leaders providing governance, ethical oversight and assurance. While the paper acknowledges that AI will bring change to how the profession operates, it reinforces – rather than diminishes – the role accountants play in supporting robust, accountable decision-making. The Institute also challenges the narrative that accountants are at risk of being replaced by AI, highlighting instead how the profession is evolving alongside the technology. It emphasises that accountants must take a leading role in implementing AI within finance functions, ensuring systems are deployed responsibly, controls are robust, and outputs can be trusted. Rosemary Keogh, CEO, Chartered Accountants Ireland said "There is a common belief that AI will replace accountants, but the evidence simply doesn't support that. It reflects a misunderstanding of what modern accountants actually do. AI is automating routine, rules-based work and most accountants welcome that. It frees them up to focus on higher-value roles like strategy, risk and decision making. "The AI economy will run on trust. While AI can process extraordinary volumes of data, automate complex tasks, and generate insights at unprecedented speed, trust in those outputs depends on human oversight, ethical judgement and professional accountability. As AI systems become more widely used, the need for trusted financial information will only grow – and this is where accountants add real value." Accountants are already using AI across audit, reporting and advisory services, with recent research by Chartered Accountants Worldwide pointing to strong enthusiasm across the profession. 85% of respondents indicated a willingness to use AI tools in their work, with the younger generation overwhelmingly open to using these tools at 91%. The new position paper aims to provide leadership and clarity on how accountants can use the technology responsibly and effectively. Government policy needed to support AI adoption Chartered Accountants Ireland is calling for Government to support responsible AI adoption in several ways, noting that AI matters not just for accountants, but for Ireland. The paper sets out several recommendations, including: SMEs need to be supported on their AI journey – Supports from Enterprise Ireland, Local Enterprise Offices, and others need to be more accessible, and SMEs and their workforces given the opportunity to become AI literate cost-effectively. Investment in AI-ready infrastructure – For AI to work effectively, Ireland requires an underlying infrastructure that is strong, sustainable, and resilient. From data centres to electricity generation and investments in the national grid, the rightfoundations are needed to optimise the use of AI. Leading on EU simplification and AI regulation – During its upcoming EU Presidency, Ireland has a unique opportunity to lead on the EU's digital simplification package. Ireland should focus on ensuring regulations are proportionate for businesses and promoting the development of guidance and tools that enable businesses to apply AI productively and responsibly. Embedding AI literacy in education – courses in secondary schools and in further and higher education need to be adapted so that all young people are AI literate and aware of the technology's benefits, opportunities, and dangers. Meanwhile, as thousands of small private lands quit the buy-to-let property, private equity firms and hedge funds continue to invest billions of pounds into the housing market. Watch full video: https://youtu.be/m5Aoqr4hquU New Tax Rise For Landlords In another blow long suffering UK landlords, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced a new higher rate of tax surcharge on rental income profits in her budget, which will see the tax burden rise to record levels. Buy-to-let landlords will pay a tax rate two percentage points higher than the basic and higher rates of tax from April 2027. Frozen threshold bands until 2030 means most of us will pay more tax due to ‘fiscal drag'. This is in addition to the hike in the stamp duty surcharge on second property purchases to 5%, which is having a detrimental effect on property development and flipping. Watch full video here - https://youtu.be/O38dvXPp22k Although successive governments seem to be doing their best to encourage the big corporate landlords and drive small landlords out of business (Section 24, licensing, increased red tape etc), they still need the estimated 2.8 million private buy-to-let property landlords. Most farming families see their accountant once a year — usually in a panic around the 30th of June. The families who are genuinely building something that lasts across generations? They're doing something fundamentally different. And it has very little to do with tax minimisation. In this episode of the AgriCoach Wealth & Wisdom Podcast, Ben Law sits down with Sarah Becker — Director of Becker & Co QLD, Chartered Accountant, Trusted Rural Business Advisor, and Central Queensland beef producer — for a conversation that cuts through the noise around what it actually takes to build a rural family business that goes the distance.Sarah is one of those rare professionals who lives both sides of the fence. She runs a multi-generational accounting practice her family founded 40 years ago, and alongside her husband Rob, she's raising the next generation on 16,000 acres in the Dawson Valley. When she talks about intergenerational wealth, succession, and the role of a trusted advisor, she's not speaking theoretically. What separates the families who thrive over decades from those who stall? Sarah has a clear answer — and it's not what most people expect. She and Ben pull apart the difference between having a dream and having a plan, why the most important financial conversations rural families need to have are rarely happening, and what it really means for your advisor team to be "on the bus."They also tackle some of the harder questions that come with building wealth on the land: what's the actual cost of leaving the next generation out of the conversation? Why do so many high-performing producers treat strategic planning like it's optional? And what does a healthy, productive rhythm with your accountant actually look like throughout the year — not just when June rolls around?Sarah shares a framework for thinking about profit allocation that goes well beyond reinvesting back into the business, andIf this podcast has ever added value to your farming business, we'd love for you to leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.https://pod.link/1598835360  The High Performing Families Roadmap Workshop — 26th & 27th August 2026, Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast. UK markets faced a sharp deterioration in sentiment in the final week of the tax year, as escalating tensions around the Iran conflict weighed heavily on business confidence. The Institute of Directors (“IoD”) index fell to a record low, reinforced by survey evidence from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (“ICAEW”), highlighting a rapid deterioration in corporate outlook. Inflation risks intensified, driven by surging energy prices, with analysts expecting the energy price cap to rise by 18% in July. Food inflation is also projected to accelerate to 9% by year-end from 3.3%, adding further pressure on households. Markets responded by pricing in renewed rate hikes, although Bank of England (“BoE”) Governor Andrew Bailey pushed back, cautioning that markets may be overreacting and signalling that policymakers remain focused on supporting growth through an energy-driven shock.Stocks featured:3i Group, Babcock International Group and Berkeley Group HoldingsTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. In this episode, Chris Volpe returned to the podcast to discuss balancing his role as CEO of a 40-person cabinetry business with deep inner and spiritual work begun at retreats since 2019. He described how the work restored his ability to feel, increased joy and presence, improved how he leads at work, and helped him process recurring layers of lessons through practices like inner child work and chakra-based meditation. At a Bali retreat in June 2024, a guided chakra meditation led him into a vivid Egypt vision involving entering a pyramid sarcophagus, "dying," and being "reborn," which continued and completed in a second meditation. He later traveled through Italy with past-life experiences, then went to Egypt and privately entered the Great Pyramid, where a sarcophagus ceremony mirrored his Bali experience. After returning, he reported losing 10 kilos, shifting priorities, and developing deeper trust and peace through surrender. About Chris: Chris Volpe is a motivated accountant and entrepreneur with experience in business administration, operational systems, business restructuring and insolvency, leadership, and strategy. The long-debated Renters' Rights Bill has finally become law in the UK, marking one of the most significant shake-ups in the private rental sector for decades. The new Renters Rights Act 2025, which received the Royal Assent on 27 October 2025, gives tenants stronger protections, abolishes Section 21 ‘no-fault' evictions, and introduces stricter rules on property standards and rent increases.  Local authorities will have new powers to demand documentary evidence of compliance and enter a landlords rented residential accommodation (without a warrant in some cases) within two months of the new Act say the NRLA.  Watch full video - https://youtu.be/L6j4EXV1_Cs Other new rules coming in because of the Act include:  Introduction of 15 new offences that can see landlords issued with civil penalties.  Increase in the maximum civil penalty fine that can be imposed of up to £40,000.  Six new offences that can result in landlords facing a rent repayment order.  Increase in the maximum claim period for such orders, with tenants now able to claim back up to two years of rent payments for breaches.  Key Implementation Dates: Investigatory rights for local authorities  From 27th December 2025  Part 1 – changes include, end of fixed terms and Section 21, new possession grounds From 1st May 2026 PRS Database and Ombudsman Late 2026 estimated Decent Homes Standard Date to be confirmed Here are 5 things landlords can do to survive the Renters Rights Act: Review Your Tenant Agreements – Ensure all tenancy contracts comply with the new legal framework. Outdated clauses could make you non-compliant and exposed to penalties. Focus on Quality Tenants – With longer tenancies likely, good tenant relationships are vital. Screen tenants carefully and maintain communication. Incorporate Your Property Business – Many landlords are now using limited companies for tax efficiency, expense flexibility, and better mortgage options. Diversify Your Portfolio – Consider shifting into HMOs, serviced accommodation, leasing to a company or local authority or commercial units for stronger returns and lower regulatory impact. Seek Professional Advice – For instance by joining the NRLA. Stay informed. Property tax planning and compliance advice can save thousands each year under the new regime. Is the buy-to-let rental property sector dead? Wounded by successive ‘landlord bashing' governments, but NOT dead! The Renters Rights Act may be challenging, but proactive, informed landlords can still prosper by adjusting early and managing smarter. Although successive governments seem to be doing their best to encourage the big corporate landlords and drive small landlords out of business (Section 24, licensing, increased red tape etc), they still need the estimated 2.8 million private buy-to-let property landlords.  See interview with Chartered Accountant and Tax Specialist - https://youtu.be/aMuGs_ek17s See also: Brace Yourself: 5 Tax Hikes Coming in the UK Budget 2025 These tax changes could reshape property investing, retirement planning, and asset strategies. The Supreme Court is set to take up a plea challenging the constitutional validity of the Securities Transaction Tax (STT). This is a direct tax levied on all transactions that happen through a stock exchange. The STT was brought in under the Finance Act, 2004. It has since become a significant source of revenue for the government, netting an estimated ₹55,000 crore in FY 2025. But this petition argues that the STT is deeply flawed, and violates constitutional guarantees of equality, freedom of trade and proportionality. How valid are these arguments? Should the STT be scrapped, or retained with modifications? Guest: Deepak Joshi, advocate-on-record at the Supreme Court, and a Chartered Accountant. Have you ever dreamed about about launching a new venture with a business bestie, only to wonder if you could actually pull it off without losing your friendship (or your mind)? This week's episode of She's The Business Podcast is all about what really happened when two friends decided step up and create a big, bold business event in public - sharing the process with their community - mishaps and all. Today, I'm joined by Mia Fileman and Fi Johnston - the creative powerhouses behind Ripple Family Festival, Australia's fresh new “non-conferency” business event. These two are doing things very differently: they're breaking away from the same old conference model, focusing on community, creativity, and human connection, while bootstrapping it all from their own pockets… and making every part of the process public. I just had to bring them on and get the inside scoop on what it takes to launch something so ambitious, while still juggling their own businesses and keeping their friendship strong. Here's a peek at what we covered: Why did Mia and Fi feel small business owners needs something beyond the typical conference - and how did they land on throwing a festival? What's really involved in planning a major event from scratch, especially when you're funding it all yourselves? How do you pick speakers who truly add value (spoiler: it's not about big names or generic pitches)? What's the real story behind building “in public” - the wins, the awkward lessons, and why they believe it's a game-changer for honest connection? How do you make the business partnership work when your co-founder is also your friend and both of you are clear on serving your audience first? If you've ever dreamt of launching something that leaves a lasting impact - or just want a refreshingly honest look behind the scenes of a gutsy business adventure - this episode is for you. Don't miss it! About Our Guests: Fi Johnston is a small business expert with 24 years of experience advising, coaching, and consulting small brands on money and business strategy. Another mixed bag of questions this week, including pension tax free cash, salary sacrifice for electric cars, de-risking a pension and buying gilts! Join us as we answer your most pressing questions! Shownotes: https://meaningfulmoney.tv/QA15  01:05  Question 1 Love the show, and whilst not all relevant to my own circumstances, find it all very interesting and enjoyable. Question :-You regularly discuss taking the 25% tax free and what to do with the rest (annuity or drawdown) but need advice as I have 4 different pension pots, 3 frozen and 1 existing employer. I am looking to take the 25% from one of the frozen ones to pay off mortgage but not clear on the below: - Can I keep the remaining 75% in the pension scheme and not take either drawdown or annuity until a later date (when I take early retirement)? - More importantly, I am sure I have read that once you start to take your pension, the amount you can contribute is capped.  How does this work if it is a frozen pension I am taking the 25% out of and would this impact on my current employer pension contributions? Thanks as always Paul 05:19  Question 2 Hi Pete and Roger, Absolutely love the show, after listening to yourself for a number of years, I'm 30 and would even go to say I'm financially savvy as a result of everything I've learned over the years I'm wondering if you could help me with a question? My retired dad was looking for an electric car and as I've got a salary sacrifice scheme with work it seemed the best way to get an electric car for him. My father said that he would give me the equivalent of the total rental amount in cash as I pay for the car via Salary sacrifice on a monthly basis. I'm obviously the policy holder, with the responsibility for it but my father would be named as a driver (unsure if this is relevant). This amount is around £35k, and I'm wondering if the worst was to happen (father kicking the bucket under 7 years) how would this be treated for tax purposes? As the money is in effect to pay for a good or service, would drawing up a contract or something of the like allow it to not be treated as a gift and exempt from the estate upon death, the same as if you send a family member money for a holiday or other purchases? Thanks so much for your help! Ruben 10:37  Question 3 Hi guys, love the podcast! I have a workplace pension that's currently invested in a fairly basic fund, and I'm looking to take more control over it by choosing my own investments. I'm 38, so I still have time before I need to think about de-risking. My plan is to allocate 80% to a global equity fund, 10% to the S&P 500, and 10% to global bonds. I don't have a huge amount invested, but it's enough to make me consider whether I should be a bit tactical with my approach. With global index funds near all-time highs, should I wait for a slight market dip before making these changes, or just go ahead and make the move now? Steve. 13:59  Question 4 Hi Pete, Great idea to pause the “new material” and focus on questions. I was thinking that there are only so many ways to skin a cat/re-frame a concept! I would very much like to hear a little more around the concept of a bond or gilt ladders as one approaches/reaches retirement. Despite being a Chartered Accountant and working in financial services, I'm embarrassed to admit that I become flummoxed when thinking about how to set such up. I understand gilts can be purchased individually and held to maturity (as opposed to gilt or bond funds), but where and how do we buy them if our retirement savings are tied up in our employer's pension scheme - and they certainly don't offer such! I dare say that the demographic of your listeners/viewers are “of a certain age” where this sort of subject would be of interest. Thanks and all the best Avid listener Peter Coleman 22:22  Question 5 Love your podcast, it's been really helpful since setting up our business. Got a question for you, my wife and I set up the business 3 years ago and it's gone incredibly well so far. After pension contributions at £60k each and paying ourselves a salary/dividend equal to £100k each per year, the business continues to accumulate money. We currently have £750k spread across multiple business savings accounts. However, is there a better way to manage this money? We have considered setting up a housing rental company but we have not looked into this in detail. We have a financial advisor who seems to focus heavily on pensions rather than what we can do with the surplus money. Thanks, Mark C 28:25  Question 6 Hi there, I've invested in vanguard index funds for over a decade and have recently begun to actually think what goes on behind the scenes? When we invest in passive funds, like S&P 500, does that money blindly go into the businesses that make up that fund - ie just giving money to them, not knowing how good they are as companies, just because they happen to be part of an index, they get the investor's cash? I read somewhere, for example, there's billions of dollars invested in Amazon from index funds yet all that money was given by people like me who have no idea about these businesses?  I feel like I've totally misunderstood how it works so interested to hear. Thanks, Marc
