The Ndebele chief said the Rudd concession document did not reflect his verbal agreements. His induna's who'd negotiated the concession disputed the terms as well, along with missionary Charles Helms who'd translated for Lobengula. Nevertheless, chief negotiator Charles Rudd had returned to Kimberley clutching the concession, a single page document which purported to give Rhodes' British South Africa company sole rights to mining gold throughout Matabeleland and Mashonaland, and other adjacent territories, in exchange for one thousand Martini Henry Rifles, 100 000 rounds of ammunition, one hundred pounds, and a gunboat on the Zambezi River. Lobengula said he'd only agreed to the rights for ten men to dig for gold at one spot rather than the general rights throughout the region to the north of the Limpopo river. Once they discovered what Rhodes was claiming, some Ndebele induna's threatened to revolt. At least one, Gambo, approached the Boers of the Transvaal. To the East, there was also much trouble brewing in Manicaland. That lay between Delagoa Bay and the highlands of eastern Mashonaland, where the Portuguese lay claim. In a nutshell, like the headwaters of the Nile and the importance of the Suez Canal, the vast territories north of the Limpopo became the means through which southern Africa and the Cape could be controlled by the British Empire. The discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand gave the Transvaal the cash to expand northwards and towards the coast and the Boers could rival the existing British dominance in the region north of the Cape. The Portuguese had ancient claims to Mozambique, stretching back almost 500 years and they posed a threat to the sea route between England and India. Then in 1887 Portugal laid claim to the a swath of land stretching coast to coast from Mozambique to Angola through the region north of the Limpopo. In the British colonial office, Lord Salisbury of the conservative party was trying to stymie the Portuguese, and supported Cecil John Rhodes at least nominally, but only north of the Limpopo. The more grandiose all red-route touted by Rhodes of the Cape to Cairo was a pipedream, thought Salisbury. He brushed aside the Portuguese protests based on their pre-existing treaties signed by Mashonaland chiefs stretching back to 1629, but then was warned that a Portuguese expedition had set off from the coast led by Colonel Joaquim Carlos Pavia d'Andrada heading towards Mashonaland. Backed by the newly created Companhia de Mozambique he was joined by Manuel Antonio de Sousa - half Portuguese, half African, mixed race soldier feared by the British because he had mobilised 7000 black irregulars — local warriors. Before they arrived in upper Manicaland, Lobengula's two emissaries would arrive in London. Babayane and Mshete were joined by Edward Maund, Rhodes' adversary in the concession-making business, and Natal translator, John Colenbrander. As you heard last episode, the emissaries carried two bits of information. Robinson was relieved. Perhaps all the waylaying was going to work out and he wondered, were Babayane and Mshete on a doomed mission?

The Ndebele chief said the Rudd concession document did not reflect his verbal agreements. His induna's who'd negotiated the concession disputed the terms as well, along with missionary Charles Helms who'd translated for Lobengula. Nevertheless, chief negotiator Charles Rudd had returned to Kimberley clutching the concession, a single page document which purported to give Rhodes' British South Africa company sole rights to mining gold throughout Matabeleland and Mashonaland, and other adjacent territories, in exchange for one thousand Martini Henry Rifles, 100 000 rounds of ammunition, one hundred pounds, and a gunboat on the Zambezi River. Lobengula said he'd only agreed to the rights for ten men to dig for gold at one spot rather than the general rights throughout the region to the north of the Limpopo river. Once they discovered what Rhodes was claiming, some Ndebele induna's threatened to revolt. At least one, Gambo, approached the Boers of the Transvaal. To the East, there was also much trouble brewing in Manicaland. That lay between Delagoa Bay and the highlands of eastern Mashonaland, where the Portuguese lay claim. In a nutshell, like the headwaters of the Nile and the importance of the Suez Canal, the vast territories north of the Limpopo became the means through which southern Africa and the Cape could be controlled by the British Empire. The discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand gave the Transvaal the cash to expand northwards and towards the coast and the Boers could rival the existing British dominance in the region north of the Cape. The Portuguese had ancient claims to Mozambique, stretching back almost 500 years and they posed a threat to the sea route between England and India. Then in 1887 Portugal laid claim to the a swath of land stretching coast to coast from Mozambique to Angola through the region north of the Limpopo. In the British colonial office, Lord Salisbury of the conservative party was trying to stymie the Portuguese, and supported Cecil John Rhodes at least nominally, but only north of the Limpopo. The more grandiose all red-route touted by Rhodes of the Cape to Cairo was a pipedream, thought Salisbury. He brushed aside the Portuguese protests based on their pre-existing treaties signed by Mashonaland chiefs stretching back to 1629, but then was warned that a Portuguese expedition had set off from the coast led by Colonel Joaquim Carlos Pavia d'Andrada heading towards Mashonaland. Backed by the newly created Companhia de Mozambique he was joined by Manuel Antonio de Sousa - half Portuguese, half African, mixed race soldier feared by the British because he had mobilised 7000 black irregulars — local warriors. Before they arrived in upper Manicaland, Lobengula's two emissaries would arrive in London. Babayane and Mshete were joined by Edward Maund, Rhodes' adversary in the concession-making business, and Natal translator, John Colenbrander. But what if protecting nature didn't have to mean displacing the people who call it home? That's the question that brings us to Culatra, a small fishing island off Portugal's southern coast, and one of the country's seven natural wonders.For decades, the Portuguese government saw only one way to save the fragile lagoon surrounding Culatra: kick out the residents. Confira no Morning Show desta segunda-feira (24): Um vídeo gravado por um jovem mostra um “cemitério” de celulares roubados em Guaianazes, São Paulo. Cerca de 400 celulares são roubados por dia na cidade. Segundo especialistas, o descarte desses celulares impede o rastreio dos aparelhos. O repórter de política Bruno Pinheiro fala sobre possível interferência nas eleições, conta os detalhes do debate eleitoral deste domingo (23) e comenta as performances de Caiado (PSD), Renan Santos (Missão) e Augusto Cury (Avante). A Polícia Civil de São Paulo deflagrou a Operação Ouro Reverso 2 nesta segunda-feira (24) para desarticular uma rede criminosa envolvida em roubo, receptação e lavagem de dinheiro com joias e alianças de ouro. A Justiça determinou o bloqueio de R$ 34,6 milhões em contas dos investigados e o sequestro de bens. O Estado do Rio de Janeiro já registrou mais de 1600 casos de pessoas que tentam fazer justiça com as próprias mãos. O número vem à tona após um grupo assassinar à pauladas um ciclista suspeito de roubar uma bicicleta. A “justiça com as próprias mãos” é crime e pode fazer vítimas fatais como Cláudio Rafael Landeiro. Em entrevista para a TV Record durante o debate eleitoral para a Presidência da República, o presidente Lula (PT) afirmou não interfirir nas investigações da PF contra seu filho, o Lulinha, e que "não é juiz". O senador e candidato à Presidência da República Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) publicou em suas redes sociais um vídeo afirmando que apesar de não ir no debate eleitoral, ele “quer debater” com o presidente Lula (PT). Flávio ainda disse que Lula está “destruindo o Brasil” e que o presidente acabou com o poder de compra dos brasileiros. O presidente da Colômbia, Abelardo de La Espriella, anunciou que irá encerrar os programas jornalísticos de emissoras públicas as “Emissoras da Paz”, criadas para levar informações à lugares remotos do país durante o período de negociações de pacificação com as Forças Armadas Revolucionárias da Colômbia (FARC) em 2016. A Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (Anvisa) aprovou o registro do segundo medicamento genérico de semaglutida no Brasil. A semaglutida é o princípio ativo de medicamentos como Ozempic e Wegovy, da Novo Nordisk, usados no tratamento do diabetes tipo 2 e da obesidade. Mila Siedl esposa do influenciador Lito Sousa, lançou uma campanha para incluir seu marido, diagnosticado com a doença degenerativa de Creutzfeldt-Jakob, em pesquisas experimentais para a cura da enfermidade. I recently found (its easy to loose things when you move a lot) this recording of the Sousa tunes which features Mary Levine, a staff pianist with ?The American Ballet Theatre, New York..Her Husband, Joe was the conductor for many years.

Throughout the Western history of conservation, protecting nature has often meant removing people. It's what happened during the creation of many of America's national parks. But what if protecting nature didn't have to mean displacing the people who call it home? That's the question that brings us to Culatra, a small fishing island off Portugal's southern coast, and one of the country's seven natural wonders. For decades, the Portuguese government saw only one way to save the fragile lagoon surrounding Culatra: kick out the residents. Over the next few episodes, we're getting to know all four families of the orchestra — strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
