David Kramer's hugely successful musical Orpheus in Africa is being repeated at the Artscape Theatre and David has reworked it to be produced with Cape Town Opera. It's now called Orpheus McAdoo and stars Brittany Smith and Conroy Scott with the Cape Town Opera Chorus and opens on 18 October. A personal career highlight was sharing the stage with the late great Dr Oliver Mtukudzi at Artscape Theatre.It was Gemma's love of Zim-Dancehall, that inspired a rendition of ‘Musarova Bigman', a track by her favourite artist – Winky D also a Godfather of the scene. Gemma's version showcased her distinctive vocals accompanied by the piano, singing in both English and Shona. Thanks to social media, her version gained notoriety across Zimbabwe, catapulting her into the dancehall space as an artist as well as putting her directly in front of the man himself…and in 2019, her life changed forever. By 2020, Gemma independently released her debut EP ‘Pamwe' via The Orchard. The second instalment, ‘A Girl From Harare', was released in February 2022 alongside a mini documentary of the same name.Gemma's joint first love with travel is playing live and this has seen her take her brand across the continent and beyond. 2022 unveiled a nationwide tour of 11 shows across Zimbabwe, with an artist community of friends such as Nutty O, DJ Tamuka, rapper Holy Ten and DJ King Her. She also toured Dubai and Australia alongside Sungura legend, Alick Macheso.Whilst Gemma is regarded a national treasure to many, she continues to carve out an international trajectory with music – carrying her beloved home country with her. She says, “I owe so much of my journey to Zimbabwean music culture and to Zim dancehall. Siphokazi Jonas is a writer, poet, performer, and producer with a strong national footprint and growing international presence. She holds an MA in English Literature and a BA in Drama and English from the University of Cape Town. Her background in the theatre is what makes her a truly captivating performer whose work leaves a lasting impression on audiences across the world. Siphokazi has written and performed in numerous productions including #WeAreDyingHere (2020) at Artscape and Joburg Theatre, and Around the Fire (2018) at Artscape Theatre. She is a co-producer, co-writer and performer on the short film adaptation of the #WeAreDyingHere film. In 2016 she was the first African ever to perform at Rhetoric, the biggest poetry event in the world, in Los Angeles, California. In 2015 she was crowned the Cape Town Ultimate Slam Champion. This week Tarryn chats to South African Singer and Actress Lucy Tops. After leaving the Waterfront Theatre School Lucy began her performing career at a Hilton Hotel in China. Thereafter she came home to work for The Barnyard Theatre in tribute shows such as Dancing Queen, Hollywood Rocks and Glory Days. She has also worked with the Mike McCully Band and still performs regularly with them in the group Mike & the Harmonix. Lucy joined forces with FollowSpot Productions where she co-wrote and starred in her one woman show Absolucy directed by Alex Tops which successfully debuted at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. She has also performed in a variety of FollowSpot's popular shows such as Big Girls, Face The Music and Another Day. Lucy performed in Soul Classics' Black Ties & Friends at the Baxter Theatre, the Fugard Theatre's The Rocky Horror Show, a tribute show Stealing The Show: Bette Midler, Ganarama's Back To School Boogie at the Artscape Theatre and the musical romance Bar None, as well as Bon Soir . For the role of Betty in Bar None, she was nominated for a Fleur du Cap Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Music Theatre Show. Highlights include performing in the Fugard Theatre's Funny Girl where Lucy was the alternate lead, Fanny Brice, a role made famous by Barbara Streisand. She then played the role of Nurse in the play Shakespeare In Love, as well as Laura in Significant Other. The last musical Lucy performed in before the pandemic hit was the award winning ‘Kinky Boots' and a duo cabaret style show with Cat Simoni, Cat and Lucy : When Divas Collide. Penny Lorimer reviews two unusual thrillers, one by a seasoned British writer and the other by a novice American writer. Joe Country by Mick Herron and Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips “Haunting, poetic and page turning”, is how Vanessa Levenstein describes the much hyped Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, set in a small town in North Carolina in the 1960s. Philip Todres chatted with Getaway Magazine editor Justin Fox about The 30-Year Safari - A celebration of Getaway Photography, published by Jacana. He called it “A very handsome coffee-table book with an impressive range of stunning photographs selected from the past decade of travel images featured in Getaway.” Beverley Roos-Muller read Cari Mora, for which she suggests a strong stomach is required. It is written by Thomas Harris, best remembered for his "Hannibal the Cannibal" books. John Hanks believes Stuarts' Field Guide to the Tracks & Signs of Southern, Central and East African Wildlife is a must-have for every wildlife enthusiast and anyone involved with environmental education. Beryl Eichenberger reviewed The Wall by Max Annas, set in an upmarket suburb where the homeowners feel safe and secure. When someone comes in to find help he doesn't feel the same. Melvyn Minnaar indulged in two wonderful hardcover books of American origin which are miles apart content-wise: A Lucky Man by Jamel Brinkley and Dreyer's English by Benjamin Dreyer. Peter Soal takes us into a tumultuous White House in Siege: Trump Under Fire by veteran journalist and media commentator Michael Wolff. Fine Music Radio — A brand new, large scale musical has been running at the Artscape Theatre this month. It’s called “Calling Us Home’ and has been written by ALICE GILHAM and directed by Magdalene Minnaar. It touches on international and local issues regarding the refugee crisis and displaced people and boasts a large, all South African cast. In People of Note this week, Rodney Trudgeon will be talking to Alice Gilham about her new musical.
The annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture has been moved from the University of the Western Cape to the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town due to concerns relating to ongoing student protests. Pakistani human rights advocate Hina Jilani will deliver the lecture tonight to celebrate Tutu's 85th birthday. The Tibetan spritual leader the Dalai Lama launched the lecture in 2011. Executive Director of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation, the Reverend Mpho Tutu, says they hope to back at the UWC next year. From our side though, here is our tribute to uTat'Tutu...
